1) Featured Article

Mr. Tapert, I've cut off the blood flow to your brain...
by E.J. Rain

(Oh, excuse me, your libido/ego has already done that... You have
thirty seconds before you self-destruct.)

The Strange Case of The Friend in Need... Been there, done that. We
didn't need to go back again, but forward. To something more
uplifting for a finale for this show we loved. And more original.
Something fresh. I found this finale a big disappointment,
pretentious, overdone, and surprisingly dull. But it just looked all
so familiar. Too familiar. "The Debt" Lite, "The Debt" jr.

And bringing yet another young woman (and another bard!) into Xena's
(past) life at this point was just a bit insulting to Gab. It's like
some weird and thoroughly extraneous retro reflection of the Gab-to-
be in her future life. A nutty backwards kind of reverse (and
perverse) foreshadow. We know Xena has a thing for young women (and
they for her). Let's see, there was M'lila who taught her The Pinch,
the very young concubine that Alti gave her, the young northern
amazon that she took up with after Gab's "death," we could stretch it
to include the wannabes Tara and the amazon who applied for Gab's job
in "Kindred Spirits" (and hinted she'd be only too happy to warm
Xena's bed too) and now this...yet another (oriental) woman in her
past that she never told Gab about! Soulmates smalltalk scene: the
girls sunning in their bikinis! with a parasol yet! 'Uh, Gab, there's
something else I never told you...' Gab steels herself. 'Another one,
Xena?!' I never got the impression that Xena was in love with Akemi,
using her, for the ransom, attracted to her, yeah, falling into the
role of her protector. Some didn't know that that was the full hara
kiri ritual...with beheading...to top it all off. (Thank heavens, at
least Gab wasn't required to carry out that horror on her partner in
like manner.) I remember when famed author Yukio Mishima did the deed
(and I believe his male lover beheaded him) in public in Japan back
in the 70s I think? Anyway, I digress. Xena was never able to love
anyone. Not then. She had that untamed sheltered bitter heart. Gab
has been the only person she's ever been able to say I love you to.
Which is only fitting. Her one true soulmate.

Seeing Gab take the lead and do something heroic and clever and pull
it off for a change was very nice...but was Xena allowing that out of
some presentiment of passing on the torch, grooming a successor,
building up the heir apparent? It was blatant foreshadowing and I
tried to dismiss it. But then there was that one supreme, brilliant,
beautiful, transcendent moment at the end of part one... gorgeously
lit (in full unflinching sunlight), beautifully played, they make
each other cry so easily, no pretenses between them at all, raw human
emotion, genuine, exquisite. Wish it could all be like that... Sigh.
Anyway, that's the scene I'll take with me. It was almost subtext on
the subtext. Out in the light. Hauntingly scored. Made me cry too, I
admit it. This has to be the most romantic thing Xena has ever
said. '"Feel the surge of blood under the skin...I want you to know
what I know--please. Gabrielle, if I had only 30 seconds to live,
this is how I'd want to live them--looking into your eyes. Always
remember I love you." Wow. More Freudian symbolism when she gasps in
the midst of the throes of something akin to 'the little death' as if
she's having an orgasm. I couldn't even cry at the end, I was far too
numb by that time, but I did choke up at this scene in the first part
the week before which is how it was shown here when Xena, placing
Gab's hands just where she wants them, a tear running down her face,
confesses her feelings (is this the scene Lucy referred to on Conan
when she said Rob had finally fully "outted" her?) and foreshadows
her death (but I refused to believe it...afterall Rob promised he
wouldn't do that!) And, since confession is good for the soul, I also
cried during "When Fates Collide" which, for many of us, is the true
apex of the season with the following charm of "Many Happy Returns" a
much more pleasant way to remember our girls. And both maintext eps
at last.

And then that lingering regretful sorrowful look at the very end
(tbc) of part one that we've seen too many times before, when Xena
left Gab with Najara, when she tried to leave her in PF, when she
told her to 'stay strong' in the Ring saga as she went to meet her
fate with Grendl, etc. Here we go again. The girls have already
sacrificed their lives for each other and for the greater good and
they always come out alive with each other's help and love. I
expected no different outcome this time. It's always been a matter
of 'where you go, I go' in the fanfic parlance of the great female
friendship paradigm of true epic biblical proportions...'whither thou
goest...' that X&G have supplanted as the ultimate exemplar. I wish
they'd have stated it in that paraphrase out loud for once. Xena came
awfully close near the end. They say it always in their actions. Like
when Gab jumped into the water after her partner. If Xena goes down
(so to speak) fighting, then Gab will be right there by her side. How
can either of them at this point hope to keep their partner apart
from them in extremis. Ain't gonna happen. Forget about it. Or so I
thought...

There was a sweet and tender moment between the girls in the dialogue
and the situation at the beginning. Rather nostalgic. Some partner
pillow talk under the stars. Before all hell breaks loose. Reminding
us once again of "The Debt." Wouldn't WFC or even the loopy giddy fun
of "Many Happy Returns" or the Ring Trilogy have been more fitting
finales? Still, I kept my fingers crossed. And was holding onto that
one exquisite scene. Only to be cruelly deceived, disgusted and
disappointed. I appreciated major xenaverse luminaries such as
Lunacy, Missy Good, LJ Maas, and Mary D saying much the same in their
disappointment at the outcome, however Maas' statement was the most
succinct, eloquent, and point by point dead on that I've read yet and
Sheryl-Lee Kerr's brilliantly scathing review
http://ausxip.com/epguide/season6/fin1.html is definitive. (It's
truly amazing just how much the writer-producers stole from other
films for their "vision.") The fanfic will live on, the uber is the
best thing we (and newly discovered superb writers such as Missy and
Maas, especially as a new career or second career) got out of the
deal, I think. But, I am cynical enough to believe that ol' Robbo did
it very calculatedly, callously, coldly, and deliberately in order to
instill in the fandom, in all its aspects, the wrath of the Trekkie
to get us to lobby (and unmercifully pester) the studio to bring her
back to life in a film or tv movie since this unacceptable outcome
was pretty much anathema to all. Perhaps he thought this was the only
way to accomplish that goal. Instead of worrying about pleasing
everybody he sought to please no one instead. And to really piss us
off in the process. I could have accepted the full-circle journey of
the hero(s) and Xena's 'actual' (after so many deaths and
resurrections for both of them the number of which I've lost count)
demise (a bold move for any show to kill off its hero and title
character) without the depiction of the hideous nature of the death
itself being shoved in our faces...to what effect?! Makes Rob look
like a total sicko. Treating one's wife and the character you both
created as a piece of meat. Wonder if anyone booed when they screened
it in Hollyweird at the TV museum. I cannot get that ugly image out
of my head and it almost negated the truly erotic beauty of 'the
kiss' (still not the fully participatory, romantic one we'd all
waited six years to see...but I'll take it!) and a few other fine
moments and, for the moment only, I hope, everything that went
before... Alas. Leaving a very bittersweet taste indeed in this fan's
mouth.

Renee was truly exceptional in the last hour, it became Gabrielle's
show. And, yes, as I always marvel, I've rarely (if ever) seen any
actor or their character grow and transform as she did these past six
years. But, who could've known she would change to that extent?! It
would've seemed laughable to suggest it looking at the little girl
with the winning smile who chattered her way out of being eaten by a
cyclops. And LL could not have been more generous as a co-star.
That's also rare. Xena's redemption, Gabrielle's metamorphosis... And
is that what they would've done if they'd not been 'cancelled?' LL
would've taken a reduced work load like Sorbo and done a film or two
and popped in for occasional ghostly cameos like Obi Wan Kenobi?!
With Gab as a wandering gun (or chakram) for hire. And if Renee's
pregnancy had been incorporated into the show...would she have
magically given rebirth to...Xena?! Yikes. Let's not even go there.
That takes the maternal aspect way too far.

I completely agree with LJ Maas that the first three seasons were
mostly flawless. They had full control of their narrative. The
mythos. They knew what story they were telling and LL and ROC knew
precisely what they were doing with the characters. Season Four had
some very powerful stuff, and some silly bad comedies. I would throw
out (as they themselves threw out the subtext, for whatever reason, I
still don't understand, LL's pregnancy didn't help) most of Season
Five, pretty much everything after Steve Sears left and Liz Friedman
was 'reassigned.' And I'd only keep less than half of this season's
episodes as well. Yep, I'd rather have seen them both go the Butch
and Sundance route, ride into Valhalla, together. And, since we'd
just seen Gab destroy an entire universe to bring back Xena and the
way things should be, I would've expected her to say, to hell with
the greater good, I want you back. As Xena did in "Legacy." Didn't
they make reciprocal reparation enough by saving the village from
burning? Hasn't Xena been sacrificed, redeemed and resurrected enough
already? She redeemed the seemingly irredeemably mad Callisto out of
hell itself. And of course, it was Gabrielle who made all the
difference. We know that. I, too, thought where the hell is Ares...or
Aphrodite? But I guess one's godhood is only culture appropriate and
their jurisdiction leaves off at the border! Of course...they'll have
fun thinking of just how they can bring her back this
time...something to do with Egypt...if Rob was
copycatting "Crouching/Hidden" (among his other acts of plaigerism)
he might want to point to the popularity of "The Mummy" (not to
mention "Tomb Raider") in order to pitch her back to life. How long
will it take, however? Actresses are considered over the hill these
days when they reach thirty, unfortunately. Ripley was resurrected
for another Alien film after sacrificing herself for the greater
good. Conan Doyle was forced by popular demand to restore Sherlock
Holmes to life. An entire rotten season of "Dallas" was written off
as a bad dream...which is exactly what I thought I was having on that
Friday night when I watched the second half of AFIN. My soulmate (who
I found through the online xenaverse and through the fanfic) was able
to cheer me somewhat the next day after a miserable sleepless night
by sending me into fits of uncontrollable laughter when I entered her
bedroom and found her X&G action figures engaged in flagrante delicto
in the middle of the bed.

Remember, no one ever dies in sf and fantasy...there's always a way
to come back. How long did Superman stay dead? They created as much
publicity over that as when Coke fiendishly changed their formula. We
may've shed a tear for the death of Spock in the second Trek film,
but he was back in the very next chapter. This is no different than
the death of Gab at the end of Season Three or the death of both at
the end of Season Four...Xena shall ride again. The petitions are
already circulating.
http://www.petitionpetition.com/cgi/petition.cgi?id=1952
http://www.petitiononline.com/xena/
The only way it would not happen would be for Lucy to say no...and,
in that case, we'd have to wait several years for the big screen
treatment, recast, just as there was buzz that she herself would play
Wonder Woman.

As much as I loved that beautifully played scene in part one, as I
thought about it, maybe by the next day...hey, wait a damn
minute...Xena showed Gabby the pinch at the beginning of the season!
(Maybe that's a way out, a straw to grasp at to say...hmm, this was
all just a bad dream...Gabby got into the nutbread again.) No one
remembered?! Or they thought WE wouldn't remember? Don't know us very
well, do they? And ROC and LL themselves (let alone R.J. and R.T.)
couldn't (or didn't want to) remember (bad ep) the pinch having been
taught earlier this season?! How convenient.

I really did want Rob's bloody head on a pike on that infamous Friday
night...I was in full Xena Conqueror mode. It's not even so much that
he killed her, or the gory, disgusting way he did it...but that he
LIED about it. I could not come up with enough colorful epithets to
hurl his way. Weasel. This is the same man who did the gorgeous
episodes of "Destiny" and "Paradise Found" for which I will always
thank him who did this largely pretentious, convoluted, inconsistent
mess of a finale. Look at Star Trek: The Next Generation if you want
to know about going out with style and flair. Our girls deserved that
happy ending and so did we! They earned it.

The aggravating subplot of the old young girlfriend reminded me of
the excellent uber "Surfacing," written years ago, where the youthful
Xena uber is in love with a young Japanese woman who 'breaks her
heart'... and whom she thinks is dead by her hand, but from the very
first ('Oh, btw, Gab, I have something else to tell you that I never
told you before...') I felt insulted on Gab's behalf by this weird,
unnecessary sort of retro foreshadowing that there would be a bard in
her life some day. It did detract from Gab's unique place in her
life...and Gab is not young enough to be a reincarnation of Akemi.
And, besides, we've got a sticky problem with this souls business
in 'the present'...we have Alti's clones of X&G extant alongside
their reincarnated souls in very similar bodies in Annie and Mattie.
(So, Xena isn't 'dead'...tho, I sure as hell don't want to see them
crime fighting in L.A.!) And, once again I stress, I never got the
impression that Xena was in love with Akemi in return, however, as
this was before she could ever allow herself to love anyone, though,
perhaps, before she renounced love as a valkyrie (god, I LOVED that
trilogy, especially as an opera fan). I don't think she ever really
loved anyone between the time she lost her beloved brother...until
she met Gabrielle. Gab is the only soulmate for eternity, all time
past, present and to come, but our little erstwhile bard turned
warrior was not at all a happy camper when she saw Xena shacked up in
the (if it's not an afterlife, what is it?) ghost teahouse with her
old galpal. This whole ep smacked of "The Debt" to me. Now, if they
only could've gotten the glorious Jackie Kim back as the ghost in
question...then the story would've had that full satisfying
circularity that the fans were looking for...and it would've also
brilliantly played into Gab's own journey and she would've had the
opportunity to face her former life-altering jealousy in person. That
might've been a finale worthy of them, worthy of the film quality
work and the passion of "The Debt" and the series in its former glory.

2) Xena Quotes

"My love for you is endless."

Xena in a rare written communication to her soulmate, Gabrielle,
in "The Rheingold"

==========

The very last exchange, ever, between Xena (well...the ghost of Xena)
and Gabrielle for the series:

Spirit Xena: So, where to now?
Gabrielle: I think we should go south, to the land of the Pharaohs.
I hear they need a girl with a Chakram.
Spirit Xena: Where you go, I'm at your side.
Gabrielle: I knew you'd say that.

Zoom out to a forlorn shot of a very alone Gabrielle on the deck of
the ship sailing off into the sunset.

{Ed. note - Frankly, it would have made about as much sense as the
above to us if Gabrielle had pulled a Scarlett during the zoom out
and said, "Oh, I'll find Xena somehow, tomorrow is another day..."}

A Friend in Need of Therapy
by K. Simpson
http://www.ausxip.com/fanfic15/friend_in_need_of_therapy.htm

A delightful and hilarious little vignette written as a short scene
as Gab awakens from the nightmare of the FINale. Her reaction
reminded me of Lucy (the other one) whacking the heck (you couldn't
say hell back then) out of Ricky with a pillow after a bad dream in
which he did something to incur her wrath. Season Five is also
perfectly described.

Never saw a once beloved series self-destruct so completely as X:WP
in the all downhill from heaven Season Cinq (like a stone). We all
deserved that walk into the sunset. Rakes Rob (Evil Genius or
Denebian Slime Devil...?) and his "Vision" (from now on when I hear
someone has a Vision, I'm gonna reach for my blunderbuss) over the
coals in a sprightly and amusing manner. Looking forward to more
therapy. The author plans a sequel. We need to laugh about it at this
point. Now that the disbelief, anger, depression, and gnashing of
teeth has somewhat subsided. Thank heaven for the bards.

I give it ***** five stars!

"A Friend in Need: Part 3"
by T. Novan
http://ausxip.com/tnovan/fin3.html

A superb consideration of what happened next. Gab decides she is not
at all content to spend the rest of her life with Xena's ghost and
does something about it. Just about every deceased character puts in
a cameo appearance here plus a new uber duo with close connections to
a previous beloved uber couple. Manages to tie up some major loose
ends unlike TPTB who just created more instead. Will Xena ever get
Gab to relinquish that chakram, though?

I give it ***** five stars!

6) Xena: Warrior Princess Episode Guide
by Bacchae2

Episode Forty "For Him the Bell Tolls" and Episode Forty-one "The
Execution"

"For Him the Bell Tolls"
Another ep where Lucy takes off, Renee handles it. What would Xena
do? The Lone Sidekick. The first Cupid episode. Karl Urban
unrecognizable as a punk Eros. Love the funky wings. Joxer the
Mighty. Gab tries to play the opposite of matchmaker to great comedic
effect. And when he kisses Gab..."That was scary." Really.
Actually, this is one of Ted Raimi's best eps...even though it is
purely an "homage" to (or rip-off of) the delightful Danny Kaye
classic "The Court Jester."

Subtext Rating: Let me count the ways.
Gabby is perplexed. "Jealous love. Unrequited love. Tragic love."
All of the above. "Don't fight the heart, Gabrielle. It's a
powerful little muscle." Mmmhmm. "Love is soft and gentle, not
cruel." "You don't know much about love." She'll learn.

"The Execution"
Gab's old childhood hero, a braggadocio with feet of clay is about to
be hanged for murder and X&G seem to be on opposite sides of the law
concerning his fate. The expression on Xena's face when a determined
Gabrielle stands up to her brandishing her staff is revelatory. You'd
actually fight moi?! Gab's a great advocate to have on your side.
Tenacious. But she can be a fierce opponent. And stubborn. But she
turns out to be right in this instance. And Xena is the culprit.
Meleager didn't kill the guy. "Because I did." The killing happened
when Gab was in Athens. Gab is such a little hero worshipper. Xena
comes to respect the erstwhile hero and his paternal affection for
her bard. "People in our line of work never get to be that age." A
poignant thought even a-way back then, but a self-fulfilling prophecy
we thought would never actually come true.

Subtext Rating: Don't brandish that thing unless you're prepared to
use it.

Such palpable tension in the disagreement between X&G. Their first
real tiff. Was anything between these two ever less than passionate?
==============================================
7) The Buffy Zone

The adorable "Buffy" sidekick Willow the 'out' Wiccan, played by
Alyson Hannigan was photographed by Todd Oldham for the August cover
of OUT magazine. In the article, in speaking of her character's
blossoming relationship with Tara (Amber Benson) when it was still in
the subtext stage she says she knew something more was going on than
mere magic: "Obviously during a couple of the spells, they were so
fucking. I was like, 'This isn't a spell--this is just the sex you
can get away with on television!?'" Cool.
