'Supernatural,' 'X-Files' Director-Producer Kim Manners Dies
The four-time Emmy nominee had been battling lung cancer
Kim Manners, a producer and director of The CW's "Supernatural" and
"The X-Files," died Sunday, Jan. 25 in Los Angeles following a battle
with cancer.
"Everyone at 'Supernatural' is walking around in a daze, shocked and
absolutely devastated," says "Supernatural creator-executive producer
Eric Kripke in a statement. "Kim was a brilliant director; more than
that, he was a mentor and friend. He was one of the patriarchs of the
family, and we miss him desperately. He gave so much to
'Supernatural,' and everything we do on the show, now and forever, is
in memory of him."
News of the beloved director's death had filtered onto the Internet
via the MySpace and Facebook pages belonging to actor Jim Beaver, who
plays the trucker hat-wearing Bobby Singer. His Facebook status reads:
"Jim Beaver is in mourning for one of the best friends and best
directors he's ever known -- Kim Manners, who died Sunday night from
lung cancer."
Former "X-Files" writer Frank Spotnitz adds, "Kim had a blazing
intensity that inspired everyone -- writers, producers, actors and
crew. 'Kick it in the a**!' he'd say to us. And 'I love you,' really
meaning it. As long as he'd been a director, he never lost his passion
for his work.... Kim was an incredible force of life. It is hard for
me to believe or accept that he is gone."
Kim Manners was born in 1950 into a showbiz family. Not only did his
father, Sam Manners work on "The Wild Wild West" and "Route 66," but
Kim himself did some childhood acting and was inspired by family
friend William Beaudine, director of "Rin Tin Tin," to become a
director also.
Manners first began directing television with "Charlie's Angels." His
other notable directing credits include "21 Jump Street," "Mission:
Impossible," "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "The Adventures of
Brisco County, Jr." and "The X-Files," on which he was nominated four
times with his co-producers for an Emmy.
He received the ultimate honor on the episode "Jose Chung's From Outer
Space" when a police detective was named after him.
Manners came on board "Supernatural" in 2005 and has directed many
pivotal episodes including all of the season finales. The last episode
he helmed for the show was "Metamorphosis."

Oooh, thanks!
Jude
It was originally titled "Butterfly on a Wheel" - not sure why they
changed it, especially if there was a past film of the same name.

David Duchovny Gets His Hands On 'X-Files' Sequel Script
LOS ANGELES, Calif. (August 21, 2007) — David Duchovny is back on TV in
Showtime’s “Californication,” but it may not be long before he hits the
big screen for another go-round of “The X-Files!”
David sat down with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, and he revealed that
not only is there a script for the “X-Files” sequel - he’s actually
read it!
“I have,” said David, when Billy asked if he’d read it. “But I’m sworn
to secrecy legally, actually. If I were to tell you anything about it I
would — I would be sued.”
Duchovny, who played the truth-seeking Agent Fox Mulder on the hit FOX
series (and in the feature film), indicated last month during the
Television Critics Association press tour that the long-delayed sequel
may finally be coming to fruition — with co-star Gillian Anderson “on
board” to reprise her role as skeptic-turned “believer,” Agent Dana
Scully.
He added that “X-Files” creator Chris Carter and series executive
producer Frank Spotnitz wrote the screenplay, which he had expected to
see within the week.
Well, apparently he’s seen it — and while he legally can’t discuss the
details...he wouldn’t want to anyway!
“We’re gonna try to keep it under wraps and try to keep it a surprise,”
he told Billy. “You know, unfortunately, I think with so much media
attention on show business, it’s hard to — it’s almost impossible to
think of, like, a ‘Sixth Sense’ coming out now.”
Duchovny is of course referring to the surprise twist ending of M.
Night Shyamalan’s 1999 film, which probably wouldn’t be able to stay a
“surprise” in this world of online spoilers.
In an interview with Sci-Fi.com last year, Spotnitz revealed that the
sequel’s story would not rely on the oft-confusing “alien conspiracy”
plotlines that permeated the show’s nine seasons.
“One of the things that was exciting about doing it is to not make it a
mythology story, and it’s like one of the stand-alone episodes,” he
said, adding, “it’s a bit scary.”
And while it remains to be seen if Spotnitz’s description still
applies, Duchovny is not about to spill the beans!
“I hope that we’re able to kind of keep this inside a bubble and
surprise people,” were his last words on the matter.

'Kyle XY' Returns with a New Girl and a New Mission
The Highly Anticipated Second Season Premieres Monday
No one, probably least of all ABC Family, anticipated that a little
old teen-oriented sci-fi show called Kyle XY would take off the way
it did last summer. Exceeding every expectation, the intriguing plot
about a bellybutton-less amnesiac with incredible intelligence gave
the basic-cable network its best ratings ever for an original series
and simultaneously locked in a second season of thirteen episodes,
three more than in the first year. Well, the wait for Season Two is
now finally almost over because Kyle XY returns to the tube Monday
night at 8pm EST, complete with a female bellybutton-deprived
counterpart for our beloved hero Kyle (Matt Dallas)—Jessi XX, played
by series newcomer Jaimie Alexander (Rest Stop)—and a new story line
that revolves around the purpose of Jessi's introduction.
When we last left the series, Kyle departed the supportive Trager
family after a bogus couple stepped forward claiming that he was
their son. Kyle was aware that the people were not really related to
him, but he complied with their scheme in order to protect the
Tragers from harm and, presumably, learn more about his past from the
vantage point of an insider.
Season Two unveils Jessi XX, a teenage girl whose origins and
existence are equally mysterious as Kyle's, with the added kicker
that she is just as malevolent as he is benign. Moreover, whereas
Kyle had the good fortune to end up with the relatively normal and
eventually welcoming Trager family after he woke up alone in the
woods, Jessi doesn't fare so well when she emerges from nowhere in
the heat of an explosion. Instead, she is captured by people who are
up to no good and then tasked with infiltrating Kyle's world. Posing
as a patient of Trager matriarch and compassionate psychologist
Nicole (Marguerite MacIntyre), she then proceeds to carry out her
mission with a determination as relentless as Kyle's.
While everyone else gets excited about this new character Jessi, who
will most definitely prove a fascinating foil and maybe even future
ally of the original teen from nowhere,
************************************************************
I'm reserving all of my happiness for the return of Tom Foss, played
by X-Files veteran Nicholas Lea. Lea was superb as duplicitous Alex
Krycek in the earlier groundbreaking show, and he's done no less a
fantastic job with the Foss character in Kyle XY. In fact, it was
largely because I knew he would appear in the series that I became
hooked earlier than most fans. I'm currently psyched beyond words
that he's back for the second go-round, which makes me confident that
good times will begin in earnest on TV this summer when the second
season of Kyle XY premieres next Monday.
********************************************************************
As an added bonus to help fans catch up with the series and to allow
the uninitiated to learn what all the fuss is about, ABC Family is
airing a marathon of the entire ten-episode first season on Sunday,
June 10, from 1pm to 11pm EST.
From the official ABC Family press release regarding Season Two of
Kyle XY:
More questions arise and the risk of danger escalates in the second
season of the hit ABC Family original series "Kyle XY." Kyle begins
to learn the truth about his past, but under the strict training of
Tom Foss, he must also learn the full scope of his abilities. And all
of this must be kept secret -- even from the Tragers, who just want
to help him return to the life of a normal teenager. Kyle must learn
to live with his double life and the unknown dangers that lurk
outside the family's walls. The peril only increases when the girl in
the pod is set free and is on the hunt for Kyle. But can Kyle keep
the threats away or will they come straight through the Trager's
front door? "Kyle XY" stars Matt Dallas, Marguerite MacIntyre, Bruce
Thomas, April Matson, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Chris Olivero, Kirsten Prout
and Jaimie Alexander.

Hank's issues complicate his relationships with his 13-year-old daughter

It's Showtime for Duchovny's TV return
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- David Duchovny is eyeing his first
regular TV role since "The X-Files" went off the air, with a new
dramatic series on the U.S. cable network, Showtime.
The 46-year-old actor is reportedly in talks to serve as both the lead
and executive producer on a new unnamed pilot, which could become
Duchovny's first major TV role since 2000, said Daily Variety.
The drama is said to focus on a single father trying to raise his
child while battling an addiction to both drugs and sex.
The actor, who played FBI agent Fox Mulder on "The X-Files," is also
set to rejoin forces with director Bart Freundlich for the new Showtime
comedy series, "Yoga Man."
Duchovny will write the pilot for the comedy along with Freundlich,
who had previously directed the actor in the film "Trust the Man."
Daily Variety said Duchovny recently finished work on the film "Things
We Lost in the Fire," in which he shared screen time with Benicio Del
Toro and Halle Berry.

Ever since David Duchovny left The X-Files, there has been a little
empty place in my heart. Fear not, Duchovny fans, for he returns again
to the small screen! This time, however, he’ll be working with Showtime
on two projects, according to a report from Variety. One series in the
works would have Duchovny starring as a writer addicted to sex and
drugs—who is trying to raise a child on his own. The pilot does not
have a title attached yet. He will also executive produce the series.
But wait—there’s more! He’s also writing a comedy pilot with Bart
Freundlich, called Yoga Man, which is said to be similar to the movie
Shampoo (with Warren Beatty), only set in a yoga studio. Hmm. Ahh, just
when I’d gotten the last of Duchovny out of my system, he’s back again.
Welcome back to the small screen, David.

David Duchovny is returning to primetime television, teaming with
Showtime on a pair of series projects, according to Variety.
The actor is finalizing a deal to topline and executive produce the
cable channel's untitled drama pilot about a novelist trying to raise a
kid on his own while battling an addiction to sex and drugs.
If the project is picked up to series, it will be Duchovny's first
regular TV role since The X-Files wrapped in 2000.
Duchovny also has set up the comedy series Yoga Man, described as
Shampoo in a yoga studio, at Showtime. He'll write the pilot script
with Bart Freundlich, who directed Duchovny in the feature Trust the
Man, and Scott Burns (Wonderland).
In the untitled drama, Duchovny will star as Hank Moody, a charming but
self-destructive writer and father of one, whose obsession with women
and honesty both enriches and harms his life and work.
Tom Kapinos (Dawson's Creek) created the show. He'll exec produce with
Duchovny and helmer Stephen Hopkins (24). Latter also is attached to
direct the pilot.

Not the probe again
Charles Purcell
October 20, 2006
Former X Files star David Duchovny has a theory on why aliens use
probes on humans.
"My theory," he says, "is that, much like the ship of fools - the
phenomenon where a ship would be stuffed with insane people and set
adrift on the high seas - alien civilisations also do that with
spaceships. They put all their sex offenders and dentists on spaceships
and send them out to the farthest reaches of the galaxy.
"So, when we get abducted and get probed, that's what we're dealing
with. That's why we get probed and get our teeth drilled at the same
time."
Duchovny is on the phone at the intersection of Montana and 11th Street
at Santa Monica in Los Angeles - "I've just given you these
co-ordinates in case you want to send a missile" - purportedly to talk
about his new romantic comedy, Trust the Man, but things aren't always
what they seem.
In Trust the Man, Duchovny plays Tom, a New Yorker and stay-at-home
husband married to high-profile actor Rebecca (Julianne Moore). They're
friends with layabout Tobey (Billy Crudup) and wannabe novelist Elaine
(Maggie Gyllenhaal). Both couples have problems exacerbated by their
failure to communicate. Tom and Rebecca have mismatched sex drives,
which leads Tom to consider straying; Elaine wants to be married and
have kids, but Tobey is happy with the status quo.
Trust the Man is no Woody Allen film, but it's a semi-decent chick
flick and Duchovny is likeable in his role. It reminded me a little of
the book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, in that its men and
women don't understand each other.
Duchovny says director Bart Freundlich wanted the tag line on the
poster to read, "Women are from Mars, men have a penis", but "[film
distributor] Fox wouldn't go for it".
This is the second movie, after 2001's Evolution, in which Duchovny has
co-starred with Moore. Does the former Agent Mulder have a thing for
redheads, after starring with Gillian Anderson in The X Files?
"If I could speak honestly with you, I don't have a redhead fetish. I'm
not sure if I ever dated a redhead. I just seem to act with them all
the time."
What was it like acting with Maggie Gyllenhaal? Did I pronounce her
surname wrong?
"Yeah, you pronounced it 'gynaecological'. I would've loved to do more
with her. She was terrific."
At the start of the movie, Duchovny and Moore are in a therapist's
office to discuss their relationship - in particular, Duchovny's
proclivity towards "doggy-style" sex and Moore's lack of sex drive.
Does Duchovny think aliens stole his wife's libido? He laughs.
"I don't know where they would take it from. I don't know where the
libido exists. Maybe it's like Austin Powers's mojo or something."
How far up does the conspiracy go? Was the X-Files' Cigarette Smoking
Man involved?
"I don't think so. I think he's retired. Or he's employed by the
Bush-Cheney administration. He may have been running the country for
the last six years."
Why didn't he ask the Lone Gunmen for help? Is it because they don't
know anything about women?
"Why didn't I ask the Lone Gunmen for help on this movie?"
Yes, on the case of his wife's missing libido. There is a stunned
silence as Duchovny realises he's dealing with an X Files nutter. Or an
alien.
"Ah ... I don't know. I can't answer that."
I should quit with the alien questions while I'm ahead. But the truth
is out there. I must know: does he believe in aliens? Are we not alone?
"I don't believe we're in contact with aliens or someone is hiding that
contact. But it seems odd to me that this planet has all the life on it
in all the universes. I would bet on there being life elsewhere."

Set in present day Minneapolis, "A.M.P.E.D." centers on a group of

Department for being fearless and level-headed. Tony Curran portrays
Detective Mark Jacocks, a tough cop who imparts his own special brand
of survival philosophy onto rookies and whose method clashes with
Spicer.
Lee Tergesen is best known for his portrayal of Tobias Beecher on HBO's

Housewives," "Law and Order," "CSI" and "Homicide: Life on the Street."
Tergesen is also starring in the upcoming theatrical release "Texas

longtime showrunner/executive producers on "The X-Files" and Steven
Mitchell and Craig Van Sickle co-created and produced "The Pretender."
In Canada, Brightlight Pictures will produce. For Spike TV, Bill
McGoldrick of Spike TV is executive in charge of production.
Fox 21, the boutique from Twentieth Century Fox Television, aims to
deliver innovative programming to all the networks while controlling
the escalating costs of TV production. Led by Jane Francis, Fox 21 has
already produced three series spanning comedy, drama and reality in
"Free Ride," "Saved" and "Beauty and the Geek," and has multiple
projects in various stages of development for both network and cable
television.

The online poll said of Diana: "She was unmissable in that amazing
leather jumpsuit."

Duchovny files his TV past
By ian caddell
Publish Date: 24-Aug-2006
----------
NEW YORK—One wonders if an agent calling up an actor has ever said,
“The good news is that you have a job on a TV series and the network
expects it to run for years. The bad news is that after it’s over you
will probably never work again.” David Duchovny is still working, but
in a hotel room in New York he admits that at the end of The X-Files in
2002 he began to think about making funny movies so he could move as
far as possible from his character in that series, Fox Mulder.
“I wanted to do comedies only because comedy seemed to be antithetical
to The X-Files. First I thought, ‘I will make people forget that,’ but
then I thought, ‘How could they forget that? It was a decade. You don’t
forget a decade.’ I can’t think of anything bigger in terms of
television. People talk about Star Trek, but it was only on for three
years and then created as nostalgia on reruns. At some point I realized
that it is what it is, and it is probably unlikely that I will ever do
anything as big as that, because I don’t think that there can be
anything as culturally pervasive as the show or that character.
Certainly not a movie character, because this was part of the culture.
There is nothing that I can think of that would approach that kind of
magnitude. So at some point I started choosing things because I liked
them or they challenged me.”
Duchovny’s latest choice, Trust the Man, is a romantic comedy about two
couples who are struggling through their relationships. (It opens in
Vancouver on Friday [September 1].) He plays a director of commercials
who is taking time off to be with his children. Julianne Moore is his
actor wife, Billy Crudup plays her brother and his best friend, and
Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Crudup’s girlfriend. The movie is directed by
Bart Freund?lich, who happens to be married to Moore. Crudup and
Duchovny are his best friends. Duchovny says that although it sounds
like a great way to make a movie, having pals on a set can have its
drawbacks.
“I had a lot of friends on this set, but one thing about doing The
X-Files for so many years is that they become friends. So I guess I was
used to that experience as well. When you do a movie with your friends,
you don’t want to disappoint them, because disappointing them has
repercussions. If you are working with people you don’t know that well
and it doesn’t work out, you can think ‘Well, maybe I won’t see them so
often and when I do I will say, “I am sorry that I fucked up your
movie.”?’ But you can’t do that with friends. On the one hand, you
think it would be much more casual and relaxed, but on the other hand,
you are constantly thinking, ‘I don’t want to screw up this movie.’?”

Duchovny ready to play Mulder again
NEW YORK, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- Actor David Duchovny said in New York he
would like to star in another film based on his Fox TV sci-fi/mystery
TV series, "The X-Files."
Created by Chris Carter and co-starring Duchovny and Gillian Anderson,
the show originally ran from 1993 through 2002 and spawned a 1998 film
version, called "The X-Files."
Asked if a sequel is in the works, Duchovny said, "It's always on the
horizon."
"I'm still very much in touch with Chris Carter, Gillian. Both Gillian
and I are positive about it. It's not like we're running from it," he
said. "There are some legal things that need to be resolved over at
Fox."
Although no script has been written yet for a sequel, "There is an
idea," Duchovny said.
The star of the new big-screen comedy, "Trust the Man," denied,
however, reports he is planning to take over the role of Bruce Banner
from actor Eric Bana in an upcoming sequel to the 2003 film, "Hulk."
"No," Duchovny said. "I don't know where that came from."
