I'm a deaf Dr Who fan and hence my access to the stories is VERY,
VERY limited - only three of the videotapes had closed captioning
(The Curse Of Peladon, The Green Death, and Horror of Fang Rock), but
fortunately the DVDs all have full captioning, thank random deities -
so even if it is at the rate of one story every 2 months, I'll get to
see them all eventually. (I also managed to see Planet of the Daleks,
along with Green and Pyramids, back when they were repeated on BBC2,
and remember watching Colin and Sylvester as a tiny kid with
subtitles, it's how I became a fan.)

So you're doing a FANTASTIC service here - I now know where to look
when I'm next invited to Dr Who video nights and the stories are sans
captioning, (or the other guests get moody about being expected to
view their Who with non-canon words along the bottom. ;))

So, keep it up - I'd love to help but I'm not sure whether captioning
actually shows the words exactly as said, or just almost exactly as
said.

Daniel,

Unfortunately the subtitles are not exact to the speech of the
actors. For obvious reasons, stumbled lines are not subtitled nor
are a lot of the start of sentences which begin "Well..." and that
happens an incredible amount in the programme. Also, lines which are
rapidly said are concatonated and lines which are repeated (alarm
tannoys, for example) are not subtitled in full.

For an example of most of the above, look at the subtitles
in "Spearhead" compared to the transcript.

Wow, haven't things changed! Turn your back for five minutes and we
have a shiny new series to watch. Doctor Who is back, and this time
it's here to stay...for a few years at least, all modern and well
made! Even this early in the first season there are big changes on
the horizon, which I thoroughly expect RTD to turn to his
advantage 'cause he the man. :)
However, I'm not the only person who has had concerns regarding
immediate transcriptions.

The general thought of those who have expressed opinions is that the
series is new, the BBC (obviously) wants to sell it and it would be
a nice of us to let her get on with it in peace for the time being.
In other words, no-one wants to start spoiling anyone's fun, but it
would be a really good idea if we were all united in considering new
Doctor Who off limits, at least for the moment.

After all; it's one thing to create a handy reference guide for a
series that is 40 odd years old, but a current BBC "flagship" series
is likely to attract a deal of unwanted attention.

Hello all,

I'm new to this list and I have a couple of questions. First of all,
is anyone working on transcripts for the Ninth Doctor shows? I'd be
interested in giving the first episode - 'Rose' - a go if no one else
is already working on it.

Secondly, is there a site or a guide out there for transcript
writing? I've never done it before and I would rather like to get it
right. Unless, you mind armatures giving it a go? I have a great
deal of knowledge about writing; both prose and poetry as well as
fiction and non-fiction. I'm an academic by vocation and a writer of
original fiction, fanfiction, and poetry in my spare time. So, I
spend a great deal of my life working with words. Transcript writing,
however, is new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cleo :-)

Hi Cleo,

Welcome to the club!!

I suspect no one has yet started ninth Doctor stories so I would
just start.

As regards how...the best way I've found is:

1) Tape record the soundtrack on cassette.
2) Use this to get down the dialogue without wearing out your video
copy. If you're a little bit uncertain who said a particular line,
just get it typed out anyway and put a note down to remember to
check the video later on. To save time, I put down character's name
prompts as 'D:' (for the Doctor, etc) and then use the Find/Replace
function in word later on to swap 'D:' for 'DOCTOR:'. Don't worry
about formatting in any way though at this point. At this stage, the
most difficult bits are unusual words (usually the scientific made-
up words) and when characters are shouting/speaking over one
another/music/sound effects etc. This is where having the soundtrack
taped helps but it is surprising how often you can correct your
interpretation once you watch the episode again. When there is a gap
in the dialogue, leave a gap on the page of a couple of lines and
this is where you will have to type in the action descriptions later
on.
3) If you are familiar enough with the episode, but in the lines to
indicate scene breaks and scene titles e.g. 1: INT. TARDIS. CONSOLE
ROOM. If not, they can always wait until later.
4) Start getting down your scene, action, setting text by watching
the video. This is where you fill in the gaps in your dialogue but
you might find it necessary to put action in where there is dialogue
e.g. a character carrying out a task where they are speaking. This
is where your personal style comes into play. Some transcribers use
colourful metaphors to describe something. I personally (and it is
just personal to me) avoid these, just as I always avoided
describing the colour of something for a black and white sixties
episode!
5) Be alert as to when you are transcribing a scene which takes
place on a set, or using a character that is seen for the first time
as this is where you will have to fully decribe the place, the
person or thing! After that, you don't need to worry.
6) Be consistent in describing your scene settings.
7) Use the web for sourcing of spellings e.g. are unusual names, not
in the cast lists, used with accuracy on sites like Outpost
Gallifrey or in DWM?
8) If you use scene numberings, make sure they are correct!
9) Format the transcript in the style you want.
10) Put a question (if it hasn't already been asked) on OG about the
font used in the title credits. A patient search of the web usually
results in a site where this can be downloaded for free. (Don't
forget to post it on this group!)
11) Final quick proof-read and post!
12) Finally, timings. Going full tilt and before the RSI kicks in,
it takes me 2.5 to 3 hours to get the dialogue down, the same for
description and about half an hour for formatting but this is for a
25 minute episode and is based on a strict average and the
possibility (which never happens) of doing it in one go. Episodes
with lots of action or scenes take a bit longer for obvious reasons.

Best of luck - the worst is usually the first you do, after that
it's a breeze!

Heya,

I'm happy to have a go at writing transcripts for the latest season as
well. Work is very quiet at the moment and I'm a 70wpm typist so we'll
see how it goes.

Have read the blurb you posted to the other person who wanted to write
transcripts.

I'll start at the end and work backwards to decrease the chance we'll
overlap.

Cheers

I am of the opinion that the more colourful and rich you make a
story, the better. Transcriptions can be as much about a person's
interpretation of the story as the actual mechanics of dialogue and
scenes. I just scribbled things for my own enjoyment; they may be
pants to read and probably contain numerous innaccuracies, but I had
tremendous fun with such as The Seeds of Death. It's a sad
confession, but there it is.

Excellent guide!

Transcribing is like pulling out into heavy traffic - signal and
go! ;)

Hope no one minds, I've created folders for respective Doctors, so all
