"The Monster of Peladon" (4). I note that file space is starting to
run out so I will shortly be deleting some of my older entries.

Corrected and revised versions of Episodes 1 & 2 of "Marco Polo".
These have been updated from the CD release and the DWM archive.
I've deleted my files for "Day of the Daleks" and "The Curse of
Peladon" to create space. Message for Ian Hammond: There are other
scripts I could delete but you haven't yet posted them to your site -
"The Myth Makers" and "The Ambassadors of Death".

"The Monster of Peladon" (6). "Planet of the Spiders" to follow soon
but the first episode will be a couple of weeks away. I've also got
some more revisions to "Marco Polo" but will hold these back in
light of the wonderful news of the telesnap recovery and make proper
revisions when these are published.

I know someone is doing the Curse Of Fenric, but does anyone want me
to do the script for the movie version and the original BBC episodes,
from the DVD? I have some time on my hands over Easter and can do
them. (Yes, Three Doctors Part 2 is coming soon. . . . but then, so
is the new tv series.)

If anyone wants to stop me, email before April 5th 2004.
If not, then I start then. Have checxked the databsase, and there is
nothing there (yes, someone is doing a novolisation, but not the
actual scripts)

Regards

Lonnie

I'd added updated transcripts of Episode 1 of "Marco Polo"
and "Mission to the Unknown" to the files section. As promised, the
transcript of "Polo" adds details gleaned from the telesnaps
which "Doctor Who Monthly" has just published for "Roof of the
World". These, to my pleasant surprise, have added little of to what
we knew already. Changed are the following (with some detail for
those overseas with no immediate acces to DWM):

1) A few extra costume details where the characters change in and
out of costume for different scenes.
2) Extra details of film sequences. I'd always assumed that the
first shots of "Roof of the World" replicated the end of "Brink of
Disaster" but the very first telesnap shows a dissolve from a model
sequence of the mountain range, in the corner of which is the very
first use of a model police box!
3) The placing within the transcript of the scene of the model of
Polo's caravan in the snow. In the previous transcript, I put this
before the first scene in the main tent (with Ping-Cho making soup).
The telesnap shows that this actually occured between the latter
scene and the scene in Susan and Ping-Cho's "room". To be accurate,
I did find that out a few weeks ago when I looked at the narration
script provided on the first CD of the audio release but as the
publication of the telesnaps were imminent, I held back on changing
it until now.
4) Various reaction shots - someone smiling, frowning etc.
5) Better detail on the "Marco Polo" journal sequence. The order I
previously put down was Quill in hand/map/bearers with wagon whereas
the telesnaps show conclusively it was map/quill/bearers as the
narration progresses. I have tried to indicate this in the
transcript. As an aside, I have taken out the reference to the map
being a "parchment" - it is nothing of the sort! It is a graphical
map such as you would see on a news broadcast (albeit in Black and
White) with the area of "Cathay" hightlighted and everything outside
its borders being black. The fonts used are as modern as those used
in the title credits and the places shown are those which the serial
would visit as the serial progressed (Pamirs, Kashgar, Yarkand, Lop,
Tunhuang, Su Chow, Kan Chow, Lan Chow, Sinju, Cheng Ting, Shang Tu
and Peking.) These are all places mentioned in Polo's narration as
the serial progresses and the second telesnap in scene 11 of the
transcript shows that the camera has closed in on the extreme
western section of the map showing the Pamirs, Kashgar, Yarkand and
Lop. At this stage I can only presume that subsequent episodes did
the same - there is no animated line of progress, no indication (so
far) of the oasis in the desert or the bamboo forest etc. The view
of the quill in Polo's hand writing the journal and the bearers
against a mountain backdrop (looking suspiciously like back
projection) are superimposed over the static view of the close-up of
the western extremity of the map.
6) Tegana, although silent, does feature in the sequences at the way
station at Lop. He quite obviously listens intently while Polo
explains what a bonus the "flying caravan" will be to the Khan and
Waris Hussein features a close-up of Derren Nesbitt's face in this
sequence. I've therefore added this.
7) Although not shown in this set of telesnaps, I understand that
overall they do show that the left alignment of the rolling credits
continued until at least Episode 3 of "Polo" and I have attempted to
show this in the attached file.

I've also attached a slighly amended version of the transcript
for "Mission to the Unknown". In the same issue of DWM in which the
telesnaps appear, Andrew Pixley has contibuted a brief but excellent
analysis of who exactly was who of the alien delegates involved with
the Daleks based upon the recent finding of "Day of Armageddon". He
has compared "Mission", "Day" and "The Abandoned Planet" with
scripts, photos, production documentation and the recovered episode
to try and conclusively name the aliens although, as he
says "without further visual evidence from "Mission to the Unknown",
it is not possible to make a watertight case." Nevertheless, I have
amended the start of scene 14 of this transcript to try and reflect
his findings.

I'm still working on "Planet of the Spiders" and hope to produce a
completed Part One soon.

highlights the changes between the VHS, DVD, and the novel.

Been waiting for the DVD release and now that it's here, it's time

With the final telesnaps for "Marco Polo" appearing yesterday
in "Doctor Who Monthly", I added episodes 3 to 7 of that story to
the files. These transcripts have been fully updated with the use of
the CD release from last year to accurately transcribe the complete
dialogue and lots of character and scene descrptions have been added
from the telesnaps. I've not forgotten "Planet of the Spiders" and
hope to have Part One finished next weekend.

I'm a deaf Dr Who fan and hence my access to the stories is VERY,
VERY limited - only three of the videotapes had closed captioning
(The Curse Of Peladon, The Green Death, and Horror of Fang Rock), but
fortunately the DVDs all have full captioning, thank random deities -
so even if it is at the rate of one story every 2 months, I'll get to
see them all eventually. (I also managed to see Planet of the Daleks,
along with Green and Pyramids, back when they were repeated on BBC2,
and remember watching Colin and Sylvester as a tiny kid with
subtitles, it's how I became a fan.)

So you're doing a FANTASTIC service here - I now know where to look
when I'm next invited to Dr Who video nights and the stories are sans
captioning, (or the other guests get moody about being expected to
view their Who with non-canon words along the bottom. ;))

So, keep it up - I'd love to help but I'm not sure whether captioning
actually shows the words exactly as said, or just almost exactly as
said.

Daniel,

Unfortunately the subtitles are not exact to the speech of the
actors. For obvious reasons, stumbled lines are not subtitled nor
are a lot of the start of sentences which begin "Well..." and that
happens an incredible amount in the programme. Also, lines which are
rapidly said are concatonated and lines which are repeated (alarm
tannoys, for example) are not subtitled in full.

For an example of most of the above, look at the subtitles
in "Spearhead" compared to the transcript.
