 Yes Portia,
What a superb comment on the essential role of the sidekick. I see things in a
different light now.
I've just got to decide if my dog is my sidekick or if I am hers !!

Hi Everyone,

Today, Ed McMahon died and the LA Times did a story about him and how he was the
quintessential sidekick--getting no glory next to Johnny Carson for so many
years.? Here is a bit (that reminds me so much of Gabrielle) from the article
that can be found at:
http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-et-ed-mcmahon24-2009jun24,0,2998712.st\
ory

"It's easy to underestimate his accomplishment -- or even to wonder whether it
should be called an accomplishment at all. We live in a nation of aspiring
quarterbacks, pitchers, lead singers and presidents, where we are told to dream
big and have it all. (The vice presidency of the United States is regarded as a
rarefied form of failure.) But in a world where everyone is innately a star,
what does it mean to settle for life as a mere moon?

And yet, just as the moon plays upon the Earth, animating its tides and its
werewolves, the sidekick is not without power of his (or her) own. His very
presence is the proof that his presence is required. He may come as a straight
man, a stooge, a teacher, an apprentice, a servant or pal, but he completes the
star-hero in some way to their mutual advantage -- as a counterweight, an
anchor, a witness, a frame for the picture, a setting for the stone. Like Jiminy
Cricket, a conscience."

Hi Portia,

Haven't seen the new Trek yet, but have read the reviews and such, and
remembered Orci and Kurtzman had written some XWP episodes, and knew about
Karl Urban playing "Bones". I was wondering if any of you guys had noticed
the "Xena connection" when your post popped up on my screen. Wouldn't it be
nice if they signed up LL for the sequel, she'd make a great Romulan or
Klingon commander wouldn't she?

BSG is actually one of my favourite series too. I have all the DVDs, and I am
waiting for season 4.5 and to see the end.
I love this series because it was very well done in every sense. The acing is
superb, and the subjects treated in it are very actual and true, even if it is a
Scifi series.
Lucy is been great as D'Anna. I love her charachter.
I also like Roslin, Starbuck, Number six and Sharon Valerii.

Thanks very much for your response Bill!

The poem of yours we're both referring to, was such a delight, it's one of the
very few posts I've actually saved for "all time".

The BSG miniseries is actually something that would be very hard to omit at this
time, since by rights it's part of, or at least mentioned with, every available
dvd set I've seen, but since it's such an organic <g> part of the series, I felt
I should remind you of it anyhow.

You'll be fine I'm sure, sticking with coffee; unfortunately, I too find age
starting to make its presence known. It's just that I do like a good beer when
watching a good film or TV episode, meaning something other than an ice cool
lager!

Cheers,

- George -

(I've been sticking to the old Yahoo mail but since my last post came out quite
jumbled - at least to me it did - I have now switched to the
not-so-new-one-anymore.)

George and CR,

Good to hear from both of you. Wasn't that long ago CR, that you assisted as
"tour guide" for Warren and I on our NZ trip, and without you we would
still be trying to find that waterfalls. And George, the advice of a man
with such obvious good taste in poetry is always to be valued.

Do appreciate the heads up on the mini series, that might have slipped under
my radar, and I'd have been busting Jeannine's fishsticks when I couldn't
make head or tail out of what was going on in season 1. I looked at prices
on Amazon, and found season 1, complete with mini series for about $23.00,
which is pretty reasonable. After that you have to be a little careful, as
the seasons are split into 2 parts, so they are about twice as expensive.
There's no big rush here, as we are still in season 1 of "Deadwood", and
have a multitude of four letter words to look forward to before concluding
that series.

And by the way George, think we will stick with coffee over beer, a
concession to old age, need something to keep us awake you know.

Bill

BSG series actually seem to be quite reasonably priced (at least here in NZ,
and I'm assuming our price trends reflect US ones). And early series
should be quite cheap by now, seeing as they're 4 years old.

As another poster said, do start with the mini-series. (You could call it
Season 0, I guess).

BillHi Bill,It's been a long while since you posted a Xmas poem re XWP! It was
in 2002 I think :)If you're going to view Battlestar Galactica - and doing so
with a friend is a very good idea -  you will get immediately lost, starting
from season one :) Because there's this miniseries that really got the thing off
the ground, and if you do mean what you say, i.e. just reading about the series,
you wouldn't have a
clue.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(TV_miniseries)

You're quite right regarding the complexity and intensity. BSG has all of that,
and I feel you might like to grab a beer or two, instead of the coffee. But
that's merely me.

Still, without having seen the miniseries, you'd probably drop the thing and I
assure you, that would be a shame!

Cheers

Hi Bill,

Never got on any lists for BSG, I actually have a life after Xena which is
hard to believe. :-)

BSG from start to finish was the best scifi on TV for my dollar, and it will
be a long time before something of this quality of production and writing
comes around this way again.

I thought the ending was great, it tied everything up into a perpetual
mythical loop so you can enjoy it over and over again. It made me think for
hours
afterwards about how it ended. Much like The Shield did, if you watch that
series to it's end.

I was most happy to find that Starbuck really did die in season 3, and was
an angle this whole last season (though she didn't know it till the end). It
makes her choice of a tattoo all that more meaningful in season 2.

I never thought I would say this after Xena, but I might actually buy this
whole show and keep it for future viewing.

How about you? Did you like BSG?

Lucy was on the HBO show, "Flight of the Conchords" episode "New Zealand
Town", but it was shown on its first run last Sunday-it is rerunning this
afternoon in some markets though. It is also available On Demand at HBO.

The show is about two Kiwi boys trying to make it in the music industry in
New York. They have a manager, Murray, whose day job is being New
Zealand's Cultural Attache at the New Zealand Consulate. And they have one
fan, a woman named Mel.

I LOVE this show. But I seldom get to see it since I don't have cable. It
is SO quirky. And so dead pan. And so funny. It's an enormous hit for
HBO-I pant with lust waiting for it to be released on DVD so I can see all
the eps.

I didn’t get to see it again last Sunday but I did see the clips from it
on Mary D’s excellent site.

And I'm putting in Spoiler space

The full meaning of the title, “New Zealand Town” didn't strike me until I
saw those clips and realized that they were trying to set up a new New
York neighborhood-like Chinatown, Germantown and Little Italy. THAT'S a
hilarious concept to me. It's not like we've got masses of En Zedders
immigrating into NY and living in little self-imposed ghettos of like
lineaged individuals.

Lucy's character is a Kiwi who is now working for the New Zealand Prime
Minister, or she could just be working at the consulate-could be either,
not clear from the clips.

I really enjoyed Lucy’s take on the character-she played a chipper,
earnest, kind of down home girl made good but still retaining her small
town outlook. Her voice, expressions and gestures had a home-spun
cheeriness and optimism about them. This is probably one of the least
sophisticated characters Lucy’s ever created.

I also liked the way she played a woman who growing up wasn't all that
interested in the boy next door who was obviously very interested in
her-and now he's the Prime Minister of her country and she's working for
him. Deft fending off of his sorrowful/resentful reminders of their
checkered past while still maintaining that sunny New Zealand girl next
door charm. I LIKE this character-I'd like to see her become a recurring
character in this hilarious comedy. (But then, when DON'T I want Lucy to
become a recurring character?)

I love how this show always "takes the mickey" out of themselves. One of
the best laughs for me in the clips was the sheep wandering down the
streets of New York at the end. Talk about cashing in on a stereotype!

I find Murray hilarious-he’s my favorite character. Or let us say now, WAS
my favorite character before Luce signed on. In some persnickety ways, he
is the most straight arrowed person on there-while being in my opinion,
the most fully rounded character on the show. He’s the character who
displays a weird mix of pathos and bathos-and the actor does it
brilliantly.

I’m so glad Lucy has added this show to her resume.

It is a pretty penny to go to the show today. I would say this isn't a
film you have to see on the big screen-renting the DVD would be fine I
think. It's not like Jackson's King Kong (or indeed, the original one)
which are so WAY better on a big screen. Not being into blockbusters,
there's not many films today I feel I have to see in a theater. But as I
said, I made an exception for Lucy. I didn't go back again however, unlike
Momma Mia which I paid to see three times, with various girlfriends and
once with my honey also in tow.

KT,

Happy 50tth from Upstate New York, where it seldom hits 50 below, but we are
closing in on 80" of snowfall for the season already, and the occasional
Moose wanders free. We can't see Russia from our front porch, but we can see
New Jersey, which is almost as good.

Totally OT but just wanted to share. . .

Here in the Alaskan Interior, it's below 50 below today-but I'm not sure
how much below-our thermometer only goes to 50 below and its stuck right
at that mark. According to NOAA, it's 51 below at the airport, about 4
miles away.

And what a choice temperature for us today, the 50th anniversary of Alaska
being admitted to the union! (Of course, it's only in the Interior of the
state that it's this cold-Anchorage is a mere 15 below and Juneau is 19
above. Weinies.)

Fairbanks was going to have outdoor fireworks on the university campus but
my honey and I forgot about it and didn't go. They MAY have canceled
it-but they didn't cancel the New Year's Eve outdoor fireworks and it was
high 40 something below that night too. So I wouldn't be too surprised to
hear that it went on as planned.

Anyway, happy anniversary to us, fireworks or not! Yahooooo!

Well you know, I didn't feel like I wasted my money. And that was a
possibility. If Lucy's part was WAY short or if she hadn't been so
"outstanding in her field of acting even when she's 2 inches tall and way
in the background among the rest of the crowd" I would be suggesting that
folks wait to rent the DVD. But for me at least, it was worth $7.50 to
finally see Luce on the big screen.

I remember when it was first announced that Lucy was going to be in an

Adam Sandler movie and some of us had reactions ranging from mild dismay

to horrified screaming high angst. Good news: it wasn't near as bad as I

thought it might be.

I haven't seen any reviews on it here, so I thought I'd hop in with one.

No real spoilers but a few details about some things so read at your own

risk.

We trundled off to the movie theater the day after Christmas. I went

with quite a bit of trepidation-as I've said before, I was horribly

traumatized by an Adam Sandler movie years ago. I was visiting my sister's

house and my young barely teen at the time nephew was totally in love with

"Happy Gilmore" and watched it night and day, as it endlessly regurgitated

on HBO. It was absolutely horrifying and I was indelibly warped forever,

dead set in total Sandleravoidance mode.

BUT Lucy's in it and I have never seen her on the big screen, and my

friend Cheryl advocated for it, so I gritted my teeth and went.

And was very glad I did. I laughed out loud at some of that movie-THAT

was totally unexpected. It's very funny at times.

Of course, for most of us fans, Lucy wasn't used enough. But she did a

fine job in her role-as she said, she looked on her character as a Disney

villainess and she was pitch perfect in catching their typical

unending malevolence and sheer joy in being mean to anything that

crawls into their view. She didn't have a lot of lines, but she never

stopped acting, no matter how far from the camera she was. And she has

such an expressive face that you know just what she's thinking as she

glares at people or when she receives satisfaction when they get in

trouble. Very nice job.

One of the joys of the movie was watching for her in the story

sequences. She's in most if not all of them at some point. And she's

usually just barely human-in terms of this is a fantasy story where

the divisions between humans and animals get blurred, and non-human

body parts are part of the make-up. There was one moment early on in a

long shot where Sandler's talking and I suddenly realized that a

creature near him was probably Luce. The camera chose that moment to

cut, but when they swung back to the same shot, in the split

nano-second that she was on screen again, I was convinced it was

her-there was something in the way she was moving that confirmed this

for me. While it was pure Lucy, it was also appropriate for the

persona she was made up as-if such a human/animal mix existed,

they'd move exactly that way if they were pissed off. So I was sure it

was her and was talking silently to myself, mentally affirming, "That IS

Lucy!" just as my sister-in-law hissed out, "Is that Lucy as that (leaving

this last noun blank to not spoil anyone)?" And I laughed and whispered

back, "Yup".

But while I went to the movie for Lucy, I enjoyed some of the other

actors very much. I thought that the kids did a great job-they're

really portrayed as kids, not like the more common slimy, mean,

smart-mouthed brats that are all over TV and in some movies.

Kerie Russell was good. Courtney Cox was good. I enjoyed their time on

screen. And both of their characters had little emotional development

arcs that they handled very well. And of course, it's always a

pleasure to see so many female characters in a movie.

But one HUGE pleasure (and the source of most of my laugh out loud

moments) was Russell Brand. He was hilarious. He totally captured my

attention whenever he was onscreen. He found a real human being in the

character he played.

He was child-like and yet sometimes wise. And did some unexpected

things with kind of unusual reactions that were way funny. Whenever he

appeared onscreen, I looked forward to seeing what he'd do this time.

He read his comic lines with real wit and also did well with the

slapstick bits. I really, REALLY enjoyed him. And I noticed that he

got the lion's share of the laughs from the audience.

AND I think he's hot. Even his normal hairdo doesn't dampen that

reaction from me. Hoooo!

The only actor I wasn't terribly impressed with was Guy Pierce. I've

never seen him in anything before but he was-I'm not sure what. He was

way more one-dimensional in a not this is just a farce piece way than any

of the other characters. It was like he couldn't quite find anything

at all in the character that made him seem human-there was no

awareness or vulnerability there, he had no fears, no emotional

connection, no engagement with other people. And without that, it's

not a pleasure to watch a character. It's hard to care about what he's

up to. I guessssss, yeah, it was that he didn't go into the character

at all to me.

Oh and Sandler wasn't that bad at all. I do remember laughing once at

him, when we first saw the guinea pig-it appears on screen with him

and it was unexpected and not where you might think it might be and it

made me laugh.

And my greatest fear wasn't realized. The movie wasn't the usual

disgusting SNL alumni gross out. While there was a scene featuring

huge animated malevolent snot, nothing even approached the drinking sh*t

scene in one Mike Myers movie-the first movie I ever walked out of the

theater on. (It was SO not my idea to go see it in the first place.)

The theater was filled with little kids and their

folks/family/babysitters. The kids were pretty well behaved-there wasn't a

lot of yakking or running around the theater, so I'm thinking they liked

it. The oddest but kind of heart warming thing was that at the end of the

movie, some of the audience applauded. I haven't heard audiences applaud a

movie in years. Or course, that could have been coerced attendant adults

happy that it had come to the end-but I don't think so.

Happy New Year everybody.

KT

lot of yakking or running around the theater, so I'm thinking they liked
it. The oddest but kind of heart warming thing was that at the end of the
movie, some of the audience applauded. I haven't heard audiences applaud a
movie in years. Or course, that could have been coerced attendant adults
happy that it had come to the end-but I don't think so.

Happy New Year everybody.

Isn't Melissa Etheridge performing on the same show ? Wouldn't it be cool if
she and Lucy sang a duet ?
Hears to hoping.

Hi Everyone,

Happy Winter Solstice, etc.

Lucy is going to be on The Bonnie Hunt Show today.? Where I am on the Right
Coast, it comes on at Noon.? I guess she'll be talking about Bedtime
Stories--the Adam Sandler movie she's in that comes out this coming week and BSG
that starts its new season in two or three weeks, and her gig on The L Word that
premieres on January 18.

So much Lucy to look forward to.
