According to toonhound.com, the first episode was broadcast
on 12th December 1952, and weekly thereafter (though it had
appeared on radio the previous year).

It's quite likely that the original films no longer exist;
the BBC went through a spate of discarding a lot of material
in the 1970s and 80s, which they are now regretting.
