Freaks, geeks and class on TV (Compares Freaks and Geeks, Veronica Mars)

June 27, 2008

I'VE REALLY enjoyed the recent series of articles and letters
challenging the predominant portrayal (or non-portrayal) of working-
class people on television ("Television's buffoons and bigots", "Was
Archie Bunker a middle-class fantasy?", "Where are Black workers'
lives on TV?").

I wanted to let SW's readers know about two more modern shows that
explored class and class conflicts in interesting ways. Both are off
the air, but available on DVD and well worth renting.

Freaks and Geeks, which aired for a single season in 1999-2000,
follows siblings Lindsay and Sam Weir at their Michigan high school
in 1980. Made by the people now responsible for Knocked Up and
related movies, it is in my opinion a far more hilarious, and
certainly more human, comedy-drama than their films.

Many of the scenes are ad-libbed by now-famous young comic actors
like Seth Rogen and Jason Segel (and the under-famous Martin Starr),
generating much more natural dialogue than the scripted slickness of
most shows. Refreshingly unglamorous characters, an awesome period
soundtrack and frequent allusions to the classic My So-Called Life
round out the mood.

A central storyline is Lindsay's decision to drop out of the
"Mathletes" and start hanging out with the school's "freaks and
burnouts." The consternation of her teachers and middle-class parents
and her gradual acceptance by her new friends is a standard
storyline, elevated by the way each character's humanity is slowly
revealed over the course of the series.

The class differences between Lindsay and her new crowd are
emphasized from the very first episode, when antagonist Kim taunts
Lindsay, "Hey Brain, I shoplift in your daddy's store. Kim concludes,
"You're just some rich kid who's trying to piss off her parents."

Again and again, Lindsay's boundless belief that you can do anything
you set your mind to runs up against the reality of her new friends'
lives. The show portrays, but does not celebrate, the kids' problems
and their sometimes poor strategies for addressing them.

Above all, Freaks and Geeks is a celebration of friendship, as the
often-contentious but very genuine relationships among the school's
various social groups help them deal with such predicaments as
failing grades, flawed parents, threats to be shipped off to the Army
and some very unfortunate wardrobe choices.

Very different in tone is the stylized teenage mystery show Veronica
Mars, whose first season centers on the title character's quest to
learn who killed her best friend. The setting is the fictional
Neptune, California, a dot-com industry "town without a middle class"
where "your parents are either millionaires, or they work for
millionaires."

The clash between these two groups, and Veronica's bitterness as an
outcast former member of the in crowd, are the backdrop to a tightly
plotted storyline. Veronica scores small victories against the
authority of her vice-principal and the petty local sheriff, but it's
never clear whether she can really win.

At the same time, the show sets up another season-long mystery: who
drugged and raped Veronica at a party shortly after her friend's
death? Its willingness to explore such a storyline for its main
character--not just her friends--sets Veronica Mars apart from other
shows about young women, even very good ones. (The WB network, for
example, refused to allow a comparable storyline in the fourth season
of Felicity, calling it "too dark.")

All these themes remain central to the show, as the class and racial
tensions become even more explosive in the second season, and date
rape re-emerges as a major storyline in the third season. To my mind,
Veronica Mars steadily declines over the course of its three seasons,
but all are fun and season one is among the best of recent television.

Heroes Adds a New Villain (Francis Capra)
Today 11:57 AM PDT by KRISTIN DOS SANTOS

Yep, it's true. Sources confirm that Francis Capra has been cast on
Heroes. We've also exclusively learned that Veronica and Weeviler,
Elle and Jesse, do share at least one scene. Former Veronica Mars
costars Capra and Kristen Bell together again? Hallelujah!
Sources tell us Francis is doing a three-episode guest arc as villain
Jesse Murphy, a thug who runs with a gang of two-bit criminals.
However, Jesse is more than just a meathead. He does have a power.
When and where will it be deployed? You'll have to watch to see.
Check out the Watch With Kristin TV column for the scoop!

"HEROES" STAR BREA GRANTS NEED FOR SPEED

by Remy Minnick, Guest Contributor
For every light there is a dark, for every Spider-Man a Green Goblin,
for every Superman a Lex Luthor, and for Hiro Nakamura there is
Daphne. Played by actress Brea Grant, the latest character will be
gifted with the ability of super speed, one of the last remaining
super hero archetypes that hadnt been touched on by Tim Krings hit
series, Heroes. Returning September 22, the show enters its third
season entitled Villains, and CBR News tries to catch one of the
villains herself to find out more about her fleet footed character.
Every good hero has an origin, and Bea Grants starts with her
father, a playwright in Texas. As a child, she began acting in one of
her fathers own works and continued on in community theatre, but it
wasnt till later in life that she answered her calling as an actor.
I kind of took a break from acting until I was in graduate school in
Texas when I started taking acting classes again just as a hobby,
Grant told CBR News. I had forgotten how much I liked acting and I
wasn't very happy in graduate school so I moved to Los Angeles to be
an actress. While she did get her Masters degree, Grant just
couldnt say no to an acting career and her hobby became something
more. I think grad school is incredibly difficult so you really have
to be passionate about being an academic to stick with it - just like
you have to be really passionate to be an actor to stick with it. It
turns out I was more passionate about acting than I was about
school.Last seen on Friday Night Lights, Brea Grant has zipped
over to a genre a little bit closer to her heart, that of comic book
superheroes. I've been reading comics for about six years or so
now, Grant explained. I started reading The Invisibles because my
brother recommended it and got hooked. I just caught up on Fables,
read Batman: The Long Halloween, and [I] am re-reading The
Sandman for a comic book club I'm in. I find that comics are the
best thing to read on set because a lot times you have 10 minutes to
kill and it's not enough time to read a chapter of a book, but it's
plenty of time to get decently far in a trade paperback.

The first step to becoming Daphne on Heroes was that of the
audition. They brought me in because one of the producers had seen
me on Friday Night Lights, Grant said And I basically rehearsed
my audition every single day from the moment I found out about it
until I went in - which was actually quite a while.

Since getting the part, Grant has started researching on her own and
who better to turn to then the fastest man alive, The Flash. I
started doing research on characters with speed as their power - so I
read a lot of old and new Flash (I particularly liked the Geoff Johns
stuff) and now I'm reading Supreme Power, she said. Supreme
Power I think really deals with a lot of the stuff Heroes deals
with like what would actually happen in the real world if people
suddenly had special powers. I don't necessarily think a person's
first instinct would be to put on a cape and start fighting crime
(unless you're Hiro Nakamura - except for the cape thing). I like the
way Supreme Power deals with the government's attempt to control
people with powers by employing them or just brain-washing them.
Heroes explores the same issue with the cataloging of people with
powers and the constant attempt to gain control over them.

Grant did admit that her favorite part of Supreme Power, so far,
dealt with its own speedster, Stanley Stewart, the Atlanta Blur. The
government can't find him, but some ad execs can and they have all
these ideas about marketing and product placement. I read that and
was like, Yep. That's exactly what would happen."

Fans wont have a hard time finding Daphne as she makes her presence
known in the first episode of Heroes third season, crossing paths
with Hiro. Daphne is stealing something that Hiro has just found,
she said, something very important to the Nakamura family.

On Heroes, many of the abilities the characters have are just a
natural extension of their personality, whether it's Hiro wanting to
somehow get away from the daily grind of his job or Peter's natural
empathy for other people. Grant guesses that it may be the exact
opposite with the character of Daphne. In many ways, Daphne's power
has made her who she is, she said. She doesn't need anyone else and
she relies on herself - maybe because there hasn't been anyone else
who could keep up with her.

So who is Daphne and what kind of person have her powers made her?
Grant sums it up quite simply. Daphne's the kind of girl who owns
any room she's in. She demands attention but doesn't necessarily need
it. She's a loner - for better or worse - and isn't afraid of much.
To be honest, why would she be? Nothing can touch her.

While Heroes typically delves into the shades of grey that exist in
the every day world, where no one character is completely evil or
completely good, Daphne has been immediately branded as Hiros
Joker. Daphne definitely has some evil leanings but I think she's
more of Hiro's nemesis because they are such a good match of skills,
Grant explained. They basically negate each other's powers. Daphne
can move even when Hiro freezes time, but she can't move at super
speed. Compared to Hiro, who exemplifies a good guy, Daphne is more
of a bad guy. She's using her powers for evil.

But as the next season is entitled Villains, viewers would have to
expect that the darker side of the characters would be taking the
spotlight. Grant gave CBR some insight on what she thinks fans can
expect from the coming season and where her character stands in the
grand scheme of things. I think they'll really deal with who is a
villain or who could be a villain or if villains even exist in pure
form. There's lots of grey and I think Daphne is somewhere in the
middle of it -- just like most of us in real life - constantly trying
to figure out where we stand.

After a hugely popular first season, a lot of eyes and a lot of
pressure were on the cast and crew to catch lightning in a bottle a
second time. With many fans wondering if Heroes would recover from
what most commentators agree was a sophomore slump in season two,
Grant hasnt noticed any tension among the cast and crew. There has
been some pressure from fans, the actress admitted. I had to stop
reading the message boards because so many people were already so
down on Daphne since she was a new character. Worrying about ruining
the show just made me nervous, but it's definitely made me work twice
as hard to do something interesting. Overall, though, everyone has
been very cool and very excited for what my character is adding to
the current storylines.

Heroes always has a big presence at Comic-Con International in San
Diego, and if you keep your eyes peeled you might catch Grant on the
con floor -- not as a pro but as a fan. I don't think I'll be on a
panel, she explained, but you'll probably see me in the crowds. I
had plans to go last year but couldn't make it because I was filming.
This year, a bunch of friends of mine and I are all driving there
together.

The third season of Heroes premieres on NBC September 22 with a two-
hour premiere. Till then, fans can keep up with all things Brea Grant
at her official site.

Kristen Bell reveals her first crush

So, Veronica Mars/ Kristen Bell fans, wanna know about her first love…

Oops!!! That gorgeous is in love?? No, not now I am talking about her
first love.. So don’t worry…

Actually, Kristen recently confessed that her first crush was on
Detroit Red Wings player Chris Osgood. Here is the hunk….

Here, I’d like to appraise her for her bravery to let everyone know
who was in her mind. But now, she has grown out of her crush and is
dating Dax Shepard, her co-star in the upcoming movie (here you need
to worry about). Look what she says about her love and attraction
towards Chris “There was actually a day in high school when I wrote
on a name tag ‘Mrs. Osgood’ and wore it the whole day. I really
thought we were perfect for each other. I’d love to meet him - and
probably apologize that things never worked out”.

So, who’s made for her? Dax or Chris. Both are okay, but I think Dax
would be feeling secure as he’s the present whereas Chris is her
past. I am pretty sure that if things don’t work with Dax, then
Chris would never mind to meet her once. What says? Chris……

I hope, your crush is not on Veronica…. Sadly! Mine was LOL

New CBS summer series Flashpoint
Mike May 23rd, 2008 Television

On July 11th, CBS will premiere a summer show called Flashpoint,
which has me somewhat excited for two little reasons:

Amy Jo Johnson and Enrico Colantoni.

You may not exactly know those names too well, so Ill splain.
Johnson played Julie on the original J.J. Abrams series Felicity back
in the day, although she only lasted a few seasons. I always loved
her character on the show and was bummed when she left for awhile.

Colantoni was on Veronica Mars most recently, but might be known
mostly for his role on Just Shoot Me.

I love both of these actors and theyre starring in Flashpoint, a CBS
series from Canada about a big city elite police force:

Flashpoint is an emotional journey into the tough, risk-filled
lives of a group of cops in the SRU (inspired by Torontos Emergency
Task Force). Its a unique unit that rescues hostages, busts gangs,
defuses bombs, climbs the sides of buildings and talks down suicidal
teens. Members of a highly-skilled tactical team, theyre also
trained in negotiating, profiling and getting inside the suspects
head to diffuse the situation to try and save lives.

It sounds pretty exciting and could be a fun series over the summer.
And the fact that Johnson and Colantoni will be in it makes it that
much sweeter.

Its filmed on location in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is a
production of Canadian CTV.

Jennie Garth joins '90210' spinoff

Kelly Taylor is returning to the old neighborhood

By Nellie Andreeva

Jennie Garth is returning to the old 90210 neighborhood.

Garth has joined the cast of the CW's "Beverly Hills, 90210" spinoff
as a recurring, reprising her role as Kelly Taylor from the original
series.

In the spinoff, Kelly is a guiding counselor at her alma mater, West
Beverly Hills High.

Garth raised speculation about a possible stint on the new "90210"
after she departed the CBS comedy pilot "My Best Friend's Girl" last
month.

While she is not a regular on the new "90210," her casting still
brings the new show closer to the traditional formula of a spinoff,
which features a character from the original series.

The "90210" spinoff is considered a lock for a series pickup at the
CW and is expected to be the central piece of the network's upfront
presentation next week.

Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah rewrote the pilot script and are exec
producing the pilot. The two also are in talks to stay on as
showrunners.

Garth, who also starred on WB Network's "What I Like About You" and
on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," is repped by Endeavor and James/
Levy Management.

Why we need a Veronica Mars movie

Posted May 7th 2008 11:05AM by Debra McDuffee
Filed under: OpEd, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free

Yes, I still mourn Veronica Mars. We all know season three wasn't up
to par, but that is all the more reason to mourn what once was.

Jane's recent post, listing six reasons why we need a Las Vegas
movie, inspired me to think about, and now write about, why we really
need a Veronica Mars movie.

In some ways, the finale was a shout out to the Veronica Mars of old
-- Logan was a downright jerk again, left only to his aggression and
baser instincts; Veronica was stable and a goody-goody girlfriend
(remember the Duncan days?) and Weevil got some balls and was up to
his old tricks again. We liked all of that.

But still I want for more. No, not a lame FBI series six years in the
future, but what life was like in the months following the finale.
The finale, which was written only as a season, not a series, finale,
left some unanswered questions. Some may argue they are better left
unanswered, and if the questions were answered in the spirit of
season three, then they'd be right.

But imagine, if you will, the top-notch writing of season one -- the
mystery, the suspense, the characters, the layers of suspicion. I
want it, I crave it, we need it, for all of these reasons:

1. What becomes of Vinnie Van Lowe? We love him, sometimes we hate
him, but we always want screen time with him. Could this slick-
talking P.I. really be mayor? Don't we want him to be, even just a
little? Maybe so Keith can one-up him yet again ...

2. Is Keith mayor sheriff or not? Does he find everlasting love? We
all want a happy ending for Keith, in his career and his love life.
But do we want him to be sheriff, or should his P.I. biz take off and
catapult him into fame? Is there another book in the works for Keith?
So many unanswered questions ...

3. What of the LoVe? Do Veronica and Piz ever do the nasty? I have to
say, I am on the fence about this one. I couldn't stand Logan as a
LoVestruck fool; he was such a jealous pussy. I much prefer the angry-
at-the-world Logan, but then Piz is all pussy, all the time. Is
Veronica capable of a relationship with a non-pussy? There's an
unanswered question.

4. Did Wallace just fade into the basketball scene at college? Poor
Wallace, forgotten sidekick for the great and powerful Veronica. Was
he destined for basketball stardom? Would he ever return from Africa?
Would he ever have a pivotal role in a plot (subplot, microplot ...
anything!) again?

5. What layers of intrigue lie beneath the handsome facade of Jake
Kane? The fact that they brought Duncan's dad back into the story was
one of the only ingenious things to happen in season three. OK, it
was a little lame that he was basically in an adult fraternity, but
there were hints that there was a lot of dirty stuff that he was
into, just waiting to be exposed.

6. Have we seen the last of Duncan? Could he be "the one" for
Veronica? Yes, he was the first in a long line of pussies for
Veronica (see #3). But we got a sense that Duncan had a darker side.
He called for a hit on Aaron Echolls, which shows that he has more
balls than when he sent Meg the super-gay secret admirer gifts. Maybe
he is finally ready to come back as a more mature and deserving man
and claim Veronica's heart.

I guess since I probably won't be getting my Veronica Mars fantasy
comeback movie anytime soon that the only way to get my VM fix is my
cherished DVDs and maybe a cruise ... not!

Exclusive Interview : Kristen Bell

Best known as the feisty, young detective-in-training, ''Veronica Mars'', on
the critically acclaimed but now cancelled series of the same name, actress
Kristen Bell was a bona fide triple threat - gifted at comedy, drama, and
musical theatre.

Born Kristen Anne Bell on July 18, 1980 in Detroit, Michigan, Bell fell in
love with performing at a very early age, and went on her first audition at
age 11. The tryout (for a local production of "Raggedy Ann and Andy") was a
success, and Bell began pursuing an acting career with a doggedness that
belied her age. At 13, she had already secured an agent, and was appearing
in print advertising for Detroit retailers, eventually working her way up to
local television commercials as well. Theatre continued to be a passion for
her. While at Shrine Catholic High School in the Detroit suburb of Royal
Oak, she landed the lead role of Dorothy in a 1997 production of "The Wizard
of Oz." The following year, she made an uncredited appearance in the
comedy/drama, "Polish Wedding" (1998), which was filmed in Detroit.

After graduation, Bell studied musical theatre at New York University's
Tisch School for the Arts, and while still a student, made her Broadway
debut as Becky Thatcher in a short-lived musical version of "The Adventures
of Tom Sawyer" in 2001. She also landed the role of Mary Lane in the
off-Broadway comedy, "Reefer Madness: The Musical," which unfortunately
found more success in its Los Angeles incarnation than in New York. Bell
also made an appearance that year in the forgettable comedy "Pootie Tang"
(2001), but her role was mercifully cut from the theatrical release.

The following year, Bell was cast in the revival of Arthur Miller's "The
Crucible," with Laura Linney and Liam Neeson. After graduating from college,
Bell relocated to Los Angeles and almost immediately booked a guest shot on
"The Shield", though the part was far removed from her theatre roots - she
played the girlfriend of a gang member who is raped and branded by a rival
gang lord. Appearances on "American Dreams and "Everwood" soon followed, as
did meatier roles in two TV-movies, "The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay"
(2003), in which she showed off her singing talent, and "Gracie's Choice"
(2004) where she received top billing as the daughter of a drug addict (Anne
Heche) who must raise her siblings. Bell was also cast as the kidnapped
daughter of the President in David Mamet's largely unseen thriller "Spartan"
(2004), as well as a conniving grifter who meets an unpleasant end in a pair
of "Deadwood" episodes. But 2004 would be best remembered as Bell's breakout
year - thanks to a quirky family drama (of sorts) called "Veronica Mars."

The title role - the daughter of a former small town sheriff who takes on
her own cases - was originally intended for Christina Ricci, but Bell made
it her own, thanks to her combination of ebullience, hipness, and charm.
Clever writing and direction and a terrific cast helped earn "Veronica" a
substantial cult following (though not quite enough to make the show a
breakout hit), and Bell herself won numerous nominations for her
performance, including a TV Critics Association Award nomination in 2005.

In 2005, Bell made appearances in a handful of productions, including an
as-yet-unreleased thriller called "Deepwater" and a film version of "Reefer
Madness" that aired on Showtime, for which she won a Satellite Award for her
return performance as Mary Lane. Bell starred next in two theatrical
features, including the comedy "Fifty Pills" and the little seen "Pulse," an
American remake of the Asian horror film "Kairo". Since the cancellation of
Veronica Mars, Bell has been busy, both on the small screen in Heroes and
the bigger screen in the soon-to-be filmed When in Rome and her latest
movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall in which she plays the title role of a
successful TV actress who dumps her couch potato boyfriend. Regrettably the
two inadvertently end up in the same Hawaiian hotel.

In this exclusive interview with Paul Fischer, the beautiful blonde actress
talks Heroes, Veronica and comedy.

Was the chance of doing something that was a cross between being human and
being outrageous irresistible to you when you agreed to do ''Forgetting
Sarah Marshall''?

BELL: Absolutely. Being outrageous is irresistible to me. And the fact that
Jason had layered in so many real aspects with her, it was just a dreamy
part to play. To play into those stereotypes of an actress was a lot of fun.

Did you draw on your own experiences? I mean even though there were these
unintentional references to your career? [LAUGHTER]

BELL: Yes. Definitely unintentional references to my career. I absolutely
did. I mean I think I just looked into the depths of the most hard-to-admit
or vulnerable or bad characteristics of my own personality and what an
actress can become if given that kind of self indulgence or that amount of
vanity. That I think anybody could really become. But actors and actresses
especially, because that's their career, to be sort of self-obsessed. And
there's a lot of comedy in that.

How much does geography play in getting a character right? Because you shoot
on location in Hawaii, does that enhance your performance?

BELL: I think so, because you're a little secluded and you don't have the
fast-paced distractions of your lifestyle to interfere. You're really able
to concentrate a little bit more, I think.

So you've only been here for six years?

BELL: Barely. Five and a half.

Are your dreams more realized than they were when you started out?

BELL: I think so. I mean what I want to do changes on a daily basis. It
changes with what I read. I don't know if I want to do another comedy or
another drama. I want to do something that's good and that gets my fire
going. And I don't really know it until I read it. I think that I'm
definitely in a place now that I don't know that I ever thought I'd be in.
Because I didn't think about it much. But I don't know that I didn't not
think I'd be here! I don't know if that makes any sense, that double
negative. I feel like I've always been sort of guided on a path that has
just led me here. And I'm grateful for every single experience. I'm also
trying to make the best of this window I have, of having these unbelievable
opportunities and capitalize on it. I mean I'm a businesswoman as well, and
I know that there are a thousand girls waiting in line to take my job that
are just as good, if not better.

So how ambitious are you?

BELL: Very. Very. I mean I really did-- when Veronica Mars was canceled, I
called up the head of the CW a week later and asked if I could do the Gossip
Girl job.

Why?

BELL: Because I didn't have a job in the fall. But I did have a mortgage. I
guess I'm not stupid and I think my father taught me a lot of good business
techniques. And I just called her up and said, "Hey, remember last week when
you canceled Veronica Mars? Can I have that job on Gossip Girl?

How did you know about that job? Your agent told you that it was coming up?

BELL: Yeah, because I knew the pilots that the CW was looking at and what
they were planning on making for that pilot season.

Do you look through any of those things and like, "You know, our show is
much better than half the shit that they're gonna--"

BELL: You know, Veronica Mars was much better than almost every television
program out there, in my opinion. I think it's difficult to get that much
quality in one room.

The CW has this very kind of weird demographic.

BELL: I think, you know, the CW has tried for a long time to identify their
demographic. And it's hard, you know? It's hard to be the sort of number
five main network. I wouldn't dare spit out an opinion about how I think it
could be done better, because I just don't know. I just know they've always
struggled, and we were a part of that struggle to find a demographic. And,
you know, lucky for us, the people who caught the pilot were the same three
million people that were watching in the third year. And it was a little
difficult of a show to sell, because the sell was a teenage private eye, and
it sounds Nancy Drew. And yet you hear the storyline, "Oh, her best friend
was murdered, she was raped, she got Chlamydia," so it sounds really dark.
And it also sounds teenybopper. Neither of which it was. So it was in the
wrong place at the wrong time. But despite both of those, it had a very good
life and you know--

Established you as a very serious actress, too. Because there's a lot in
that show that was very smartly written. And you had to deliver some very
smart dialogue.

BELL: That's the best writing I've ever experienced. It definitely pushed
me. And in the beginning, wasn't as funny, because it was a serious show.
And then the writer sort of found this voice that I was able to hone in on
real quick. And then they started writing for my tone, which was awesome.
Because it inevitably came across amusing to people. And it was just funny.
The jokes landed. When I was reading the scripts, I was laughing out loud. I
mean, I miss that a lot.

There's a rumor, and you know, these Internet rumors floating around. My
wife reads everything on line, and I always get in trouble if I don't know
everything that's going on. But she told me that she'd heard that there was
a possibility of a Veronica Mars movie. Can you talk about what the reality
is there?

BELL: I'll find out more tonight when I grill Rob. I've heard the same
thing. I know that Rob Thomas holds Veronica Mars so dear to his heart. He
did for five or six years, ten years almost, before he even wrote it as a
pilot. I mean he created that character and she was in his mind and in his
dreams. And I know all of us would be involved, but the inception has to
come from-- A, Rob has to have the free time, and he doesn't. He's a very
desirable show runner and writer in Hollywood right now. I think he's
working on a couple of different pilots and he has his hands in a lot of
pots because he's really good at what he does. I mean he was the captain of
that ship and he's just really, really good. So, he would have to make the
decision to start that. But one thing I do know is I'm not ashamed or
embarrassed to talk about it.

Why should you be?

BELL: Well, no, in case it never happens. As long as he knows we'd all be
game, I hope one day he does do it, before we get too old.

It's nice to know that. Because I know that a lot of people would never be
in favor of returning to that. But where do you hope the character could go
in a feature film?

BELL: You know what? I don't know and I wouldn't even try, because our
writers are so good. I mean I about fell over out of my chair when they gave
her Chlamydia. They gave her Chlamydia. I got Chlamydia on that show. I was
raped three times. And somehow, it's completely believable within the scope
of the show. I mean it is bizarre the way their minds work. And I would
never map it out like they did. I have no idea where they'd ever go. The FBI
show that we shot-- we shot five minutes of an FBI pilot where Veronica
graduates into the FBI and she becomes an agent. And it wasn't picked up by
the CW but it was hysterical. It was the same tone, the same writing, just
different circumstances about her at the FBI academy. And it was great.
That, I think, is probably, if I had to guess, where they'd go with the
movie. And hopefully they'll do it before I get too old.

You play older than the character. I mean you are older than the character
when she started out.

BELL: Substantially. (LAUGHTER)

Right. I didn't wanna say that. You don't look it.

BELL: I appreciate that.

And you're young and beautiful. In fact, you were telling me the last time
we spoke, that at the time you were dating a guy who was I guess 30 years
old or something?

Uh-huh [AFFIRM].

I don't know if you're still dating the same person, but you were dating him
at the time. And people used to think that you were not necessarily his
girlfriend because you looked so much younger.

Yeah, I still get-- I haven't gotten it recently, thankfully, and maybe
that's because my face is becoming more familiar, or maybe I'm just finally
getting older. But I used to get crayons in the restaurant, I can order off
the kids' menu.

That's hysterical.

I know. It's pretty ridiculous. But I think that my-- I have petite genes,
my Mom still has a baby face and I have a-- the voice of a grasshopper.

Are there disadvantages of that? I mean if you're looking for chunky sort of
adult roles. You know, meaty adult roles.

BELL: Absolutely. Absolutely. It puts me out of the running for a lot of
things. Because someone who, for instance, who would be an iconic example?
Okay, like Gwyneth Paltrow, when she was 28, she was playing opposite Ethan
Hawke or Michael Douglas. You know, she was doing these amazing, amazing
roles. And I could not do that. I just couldn't. That being said, though,
there are specific roles that I would be able to conquer really easily. And
it's definitely somewhat of a disadvantage, though, and advantage in other
ways. And I'm willing to take what I can get. I'm glad I don't fit in with
every other, you know, beautiful, long-legged Hollywood icon.

You have your own icon.

BELL: I have something a little different working for me and I'm happy with
it. [LAUGHTER]

You just completed Serious Moonlight, Adrienne Shelley's last script. Is the
script tonally very similar to Waitress?

BELL: It's a little different. I think that the quirky comedy of it is the
same. It's just the kind of thing that makes you smile. This is a little
darker, I think. It's very simple in the way-- we were able to shoot it in
15 days because it's really simple. There was one location.

Whereabouts?

BELL: We shot about 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles. We shot two scenes
outside, two scenes in the living room, everything else was in the bathroom.
And to be trapped inside a bathroom with Meg Ryan and Tim Hutton and Justin
Long was absolutely surreal.

How did you keep a straight face?

BELL: I didn't a lot of the time. No, you know what? I'm not even gonna say
that. That was my instinct to tell you, because in Sarah Marshall I did not
keep a straight face. There's tons of film where you're seeing the back of
my head and I'm absolutely breaking out into a smile. I have the giggles
very easily. In Serious Moonlight, I 100 percent was really professional and
my character was a maniac. She just was whiny and she was manic and I was
right up in Tim's face a lot of the time. I got in a fistfight with Meg that
she initiated. It was awesome. I was like, "This is surreal." Like, this is
on camera, it's so much fun, Meg and I laughed after every take. But there
were a couple of different takes where Meg and Tim were cracking up.

And secretly, 49 percent of me was going, "You guys, please don't ruin my
coverage," and 51 percent of me was going, "You are getting the ultimate
compliment of your life right now because Meg Ryan and Timothy Hutton are
laughing at your jokes." It was really cool.

And how is Cheryl Hines as a director? Different than what you expected?

BELL: Dreamy. I respected her immensely as a female comedian. And
truthfully, was not surprised when she stepped into the role of a director,
completely calm, collected, knowing exactly what she wanted, yet ultimately
collaborative. And just very put together. I am so impressed by her as an
individual and I respect her so much. She really is one of my favorite
female comedians. I had gotten to know her personally a little bit prior to
that over the last couple of years, which was just great. Because I admire
her so much. So, to get to work with her was very flattering. Because she
called me directly for the part. And I'm so impressed by her. I admire her a
lot.

The character you played in Heroes, how much fun was it to play? I mean we
really don't know what her motivation was. And she has some rather
unpleasant things to do throughout the show. Was it fun to explore your dark
side.

BELL: Absolutely. When it was pitched to me, they pitched her problems and
where she was going and what was gonna happen to her. And it was really
interesting. I think that they exposed her as a cautionary tale of what
could happen to the heroes if they are completely engulfed by their power
and lose their humanity and are raised by the company. But I also think that
they are starting to, and will more, show her broken side, which is why she
acts as tough as she does. Because she's really just seeking approval from
her father. She's had virtually no human contact her entire life. She is
socially inappropriate at almost every social instance she has. She's
obsessed with her power. It's kind of autoerotic.

She doesn't know how to relate to other people. She's never had a
relationship. She's really broken. And it's what makes her so mean and this
is a lot of stuff that was pitched that I thought was really interesting
that someone-- especially on a television show, not that they don't do it as
well, but when they're trying to produce such a massive product in such a
short amount of time, you don't necessarily go to the lengths that, I think,
Tim Kring and the writers do, to write these in-depth characters. Because
they gave me a lot of material to work with. And they slowly but surely sort
of exposed this Daddy issue she had and, you know, like I said, we shot two
episodes that are in the can now and aren't gonna be aired for a while.

Those two episodes don't reveal the closing arc of this character, though,
do they?

BELL: No.

So, you expect that that will occur hopefully when this season--

BELL: There are seven more that I am slated to do.

Which you hope to do if you haven't negotiated fully, to do yet, is that
right?

BELL: Right. They-- well, I've been asked to do them and have said I want
wholeheartedly to participate. But I did already take this movie. Is there
anything I can do to make it up to you or to come back? Which is why we're
exploring the option of me coming back a month late, which is looks like
they're going to do. And I'm optimistic, because they've been nothing but
kind to me in the past. And bent over backwards, as I would for them. And,
it's just a really great relationship. They're a great group of people to
work with. And so I definitely wanna go back.

Are you comfortable doing romantic comedy. Because When in Rome is another
romantic comedy.

BELL: I'm getting comfortable. I think one thing that I'm truthfully and
embarrassingly enough to admit, not comfortable with -- Sarah was different,
Sarah Marshall. Because she was a little bit more of a comment on herself as
a girl, as a female. Playing a true female is what makes me a little
nervous.

Why?

BELL: Because I'm very used to playing the tomboy or the sarcastic cynic.
That's my go-to. Playing the vulnerable of a real girl that's in real
womanlike situations, where it's, like, romanticized, I'm a little nervous
about it. I mean I think I'll be able to do it, but it's definitely
something that makes me uncomfortable. Like, I don't consider myself a very
sexy person in a way.

Really?

BELL: Oh my God, are you kidding? I grew up as a tomboy and I named all my
dolls boys' names. I tried to change my name to Matthew when I was four. I
definitely have more male friends than I do female. And that's not to say
that I don't love being a girl. I mean I love shoes, I love getting my nails
done. You know what I mean, but at the same thing, like I also play on an
ultimate Frisbee league and I do a lot of things that are less girly. And I
don't disagree with indulging in clothes or anything, but as far as my
personality goes, I don't know. It makes me nervous to try to be
super-feminine. It's not something I'm super-comfortable with.

So you don't like getting dressed up for the awards shows and being the girl
in those situations?

BELL: It's fun for a while, but I can get over it real quick. Once I've hit
my breaking point, I mean, come on. Come on now.

Yeah, yeah.

BELL: Once you're over it, you're over it. You know what I mean? [LAUGHTER]

So, you're a homebody?

BELL: Yeah, oh for sure.

What do you have to do after the Rome movie. Do you know? Report to Heroes I
guess.

BELL: Yeah, I mean hopefully I'll be able to go back to Heroes.

You strike me as being somebody who eventually would like to take some
action behind the camera. Are you interested in producing, directing,
writing?

BELL: I think in the future I would. I don't know that I have the
perspective. Like, I'm not up at night going, "Man, I'd really like to make
that film," or, "I know what I'd do here." I'm still sort of at the sponge
stage. Where I'm trying to absorb everything. Though I think there is some
part of me in the future that might wanna go that route.

Why did you decide to live in the San Fernando Valley?

BELL: Because I lived right off Melrose and moving from New York, I thought
wouldn't that be great? I'll still hear horns, it'll put me to sleep at
night. And I didn't like it at all.
It's awful. And I moved into Studio City and I love it. I love how quiet it
is.

: What about your music? Don't you miss singing?

BELL: Very much.

So are you thinking of being in a musical movie?

BELL: Yeah. You never really know when things come up and it's definitely a
priority to go back. I just sang in a benefit that we did for Alzheimers a
couple weeks ago that Jason Alexander directed so keeping it on the
forefront of my life is very important, though when opportunities like When
In Rome come up, it's something that you gotta to take pause there.

What did you sing at the benefit?

BELL: We did all the selections from Bye Bye Birdie so I sang A Lot of
Livin' to Do which was really fun.

Bobby Cannavale

Bobby Cannavale

A day after finding a director for its remake of
<http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/cupid-1998/EP00275440> "Cupid," ABC has
landed a leading man for the pilot.

Bobby Cannavale, a veteran of
<http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/will-and-grace/EP00270430> "Will & Grace,"
<http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/third-watch/EP00317016> "Third Watch" and
several other series, will play the title role in the show, according to The
Hollywood Reporter. He steps into the shoes of Jeremy Piven, who starred in
the 1998-99 series.

In the show, which series creator Rob Thomas ("Veronica Mars") is writing
and Bharat Nalluri ("Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day") will direct, Cannavale
plays Trevor Hale, a recently released mental patient who believes he's the
Roman god of love. The show's other key character is a female psychologist
(played by Paula Marshall in the earlier series) assigned to monitor Trevor;
that role has yet to be cast.

Cannavale won an Emmy in 2005 for his recurring role as Will's (Eric
McCormack) boyfriend Vince on "Will & Grace." His other TV credits include a
regular role on "Third Watch" and guest appearances on shows ranging from
"Six Feet Under" to "Lipstick Jungle" to "Oz." He also starred in NBC's
pilot "M.O.N.Y." last year.

On the big screen, he's appeared in "The Station Agent" and "Snakes on a
Plane" and will be seen in several films due for release later this year,
among them "Diminished Capacity," "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" and
"100 Feet."

Roush on Veronica Mars

Question: Given the problems facing networks with pilot season in
doubt, is there any chance that the Veronica Mars FBI concept could
be resurrected for Fall 2008? In general, would pilots that weren't
picked up be considered for slots as new shows next fall? I know that
sounds strange, but I assume that the same people who made errors in
picking up shows that bombed are equally capable of having made the
error of passing on shows that could have worked. Or perhaps a pilot
was just a year or two ahead of its time in concept or style. Grant T.

Matt Roush: Wow, you guys don't let any show go easily, do you? It's
an interesting idea, networks being so desperate they'd paw through
their discard pile of rejected pilot pitches to cobble together a new
season. Won't happen. The CW has decided, rightly or wrongly, that
Veronica Mars is history, and it's a bit late in the game to
resurrect it now. Especially with Kristen Bell, Enrico Colontoni and
others associated with the franchise having moved on. If the CW is
going to veer in any direction in the wake of the disrupted pilot
season, it's probably going to be with reality, don't you think?

'Eli Stone' Recap: Atonement Ain't Easy (VM reference because of
Julie Gonzalo being on the show)

The episode begins with a standard "previously on Eli Stone" recap as
opposed to the creative, Eli-narrated openings from weeks prior. Too
bad, those were pretty much the only interesting component of the
show. So anyway, after the generic recap, things start off with Eli
(Jonny Lee Miller) and Maggie (Julie Gonzalo) in Hawaii. It doesn't
appear to be a very pleasant trip as it takes less than a minute for
Maggie to start being obnoxiously annoying. It's going to be a long
hour.

After a brief opening scene, the clever writers insert a little time
jump, and we go back three days. Eli discovers that a case he had
worked five years ago has been reopened. He is reassigned to the
case, yet feels conflicted. It was a case argued by the 'Old Eli' and
'New Eli' doesn't particularly approve. Unfortunately, he has no
choice but to accept it. But hey, at least he doesn't have to do it
alone. Maggie tags along for no particular reason.

Eli vs. Eli

The case concerns a man who was paralyzed after his SUV flipped over.
Old Eli successfully defended the car manufacturer five years before,
but the case has been reopened for a reason that was not made
entirely clear. Eli obviously has misgivings about representing the
car company, and Maggie disapproves, but he still goes forward with
the case.

So are there any visions this week? You bet. Eli starts seeing
surfers and beaches wherever he goes. The surfers lead him into the
men's room on two separate occasions. Wait, Eli is led into a public
bathroom by half naked men? Seems like George Michael is behind the
visions after all. Eli then seeks council with Chen (James Saito),
who offers nothing more than a few fortune cookie words of
encouragement. Thirty seconds well spent. It's official - James Saito
has the easiest job on network TV.

The tension between Old Eli and New Eli continues to build throughout
most of the episode, and for a time it looks like Old Eli will win.
But that is before the elaborate dance number of the week, this time
featuring sassy assistant Patti (Loretta Devine). The spirited
performance of George Michael's "One More Try" leads Eli to deduce
that Patti knows the whereabouts of a missing witness, who the SUV
manufacturer paid to disappear five years before. He departs at once
for Hawaii (hmm, guess that's what the visions were trying to tell
him). Once again, Maggie tags along. Joy.

Nice reference

In Hawaii, Eli and Maggie locate the witness and record their
conversation with him. He admits that the car company covered up
reports regarding safety concerns about the SUVs and then bribed him
to disappear. The scene in Hawaii also manages to provide the best
moment in the episode. After Maggie boasts about her sleuthing
abilities, Eli sarcastically refers to her as "Veronica Mars." It was
a well deserved shout-out to the dearly beloved series, made all the
more relevant because Gonzalo was a regular on "Veronica Mars" last
season.

In the end, Eli and Maggie force their client to settle. Case closed.
But all is not joyous for New Eli. He is summoned into Jordan's
(Victor Garber) office at the end of the episode and informed that
the car manufacturer has filed a grievance against him (he sort of
had a vision in the courtroom). The client is claiming incompetence.
That charge, compiled with documentation of Eli's other recently
strange behavior, means that disbarment proceedings are on going to
soon follow.

Another subplot!

In keeping with the precedent set in the previous episode, viewers
are treated to another minimally entertaining subplot. This time, it
involves Dowd (Sam Jaeger) taking a case involving parental rights in
a dissolved lesbian relationship. It's amazing that Dowd is actually
getting more than two lines in an episode. Wait, who is Dowd again?
It doesn't really matter. It's admirable that the writers of "Eli
Stone" are finally trying to legitimize the supporting cast, but at
this point there just don't seem to be enough viewers left who
actually care.

This was probably the best episode yet, despite the lack of both
George Michael and Tom Cavanagh. The writers are actually attempting
to give most of the cast something to do (except for James Saito of
course) and both cases were slightly less straightforward this time
around. Still, the series is far from polished (or even good for that
matter) and the sheer number of overwhelmingly positive reviews that
it has received is astounding. Aside from a few talented actors (who
are wasted), "Eli Stone" still seems to have very little to offer.

Anyone out there still watching "Eli Stone?" If so, what do you think?

Today in History -- Thursday, Feb. 14 (Enrico Colantoni aka Keith
Mars on VM)

By The Associated Press

Today is Thursday, Feb. 14, the 45th day of 2008. There are 321 days
left in the year. This is Valentine's Day.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Feb. 14, 1929, the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" took place in a
Chicago garage as seven rivals of Al Capone's gang were gunned down.

On this date:

In 1778, the American ship Ranger carried the recently adopted Star
and Stripes to a foreign port for the first time as it arrived in
France.

In 1859, Oregon was admitted to the Union as the 33rd state.

In 1894, comedian Jack Benny was born Benjamin Kubelsky in Waukegan,
Ill.

In 1895, Oscar Wilde's final play, "The Importance of Being Earnest,"
opened at the St. James' Theatre in London.

In 1903, the Department of Commerce and Labor was established. (It
was divided into separate departments of Commerce and Labor in 1913.)

In 1912, Arizona became the 48th state of the Union.

In 1920, the League of Women Voters was founded in Chicago; its first
president was Maud Wood Park.

In 1962, First lady Jacqueline Kennedy conducted a televised tour of
the White House.

In 1979, Adolph Dubs, the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, was
kidnapped in Kabul by Muslim extremists and killed in a shootout
between his abductors and police.

In 1988, Broadway composer Frederick Loewe, who wrote the scores for
"My Fair Lady" and "Camelot," died in Palm Springs, Calif., at age 86.

Ten years ago: Authorities officially declared Eric Rudolph a suspect
in the bombing of a Birmingham, Ala., abortion clinic and offered a
$100,000 reward. Russia's Ilya Kulik won the men's figure skating
gold medal at the Nagano Olympics.

Five years ago: In a dramatic showdown, major powers rebuffed the
United States in the U.N. Security Council and insisted on more time
for weapons inspections in Iraq. Earlier, chief U.N. weapons
inspector Hans Blix told the Council his teams had not found any
weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. "Dolly" the cloned sheep was put
down after premature aging and disease marred her short existence and
raised questions about the practicality of copying life.

One year ago: Challenged on the accuracy of U.S. intelligence,
President Bush told a news conference there was no doubt the Iranian
government was providing armor-piercing weapons to kill American
soldiers in Iraq, and he said he would fight any attempt by the
Democratic-controlled Congress to cut off money for the war. ConAgra
recalled all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made at a
Georgia plant because of a salmonella outbreak.

Today's Birthdays: TV personality Hugh Downs is 87. Actress-singer
Florence Henderson is 74.

Country singer Razzy Bailey is 69. Jazz musician Maceo Parker is 65.
Movie director Alan Parker is 64. Journalist Carl Bernstein is 64.
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-New Hampshire) is 61. TV personality Pat O'Brien

Because You Can Never Get Enough ABBA. Ever. (VM's Amanda Seyfried
stars)

Posted on February 4th, 2008 by Liz N.
Mamma Mia! Here I go again! My my, how can I resist you? Mamma Mia,
does it show again? My my, just how much Ive missed you!

(EVERYBODY!)

YES, IVE BEEN BROKEN-HEARTED! BLUUUUE SINCE THE DAY WE PARTED!

Sorry. Sorry, folks. Id like to apologize for that. Like most, I
find it impossible to look at the phrase Mamma Mia without singing
along. ABBA may not be the band that revolutionized rock n roll,
but they sure are gosh darn catchy.

Some years ago, you may remember hearing radio commercials for - what
else? - a musical adaptation of ABBAs greatest hits. Naturally
enough, it was called Mamma Mia! and had nothing to do with the band
at all. Its the story of a young woman who has never known her
father, and, as her wedding day approaches, sends invitations to
three men from her mothers past. Hijinks ensue.

The musical was surprisingly popular, and so now, naturally enough,
we have a movie.

Wide-eyed Amanda Seyfried (Veronica Mars, Mean Girls) will play the
hopeful daughter, while Meryl Streep is her once-promiscuous mother.
The three fathers will be portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth,
and Stellan Skarsgrd. Naturally.

This is one of those upsettingly compelling films that may turn out
to be great, like Black Snake Moan. Given the chance to see Colin
Firth and Pierce Brosnan in the same movie, I dont think I can pass
this one up - even if it means listening to ABBA for two hours.

<http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/brothers-sisters/281242> & Sisters? And got
any scoop? - Karina

Ausiello: Good news. The Walkers' final two pre-strike outings air Feb. 10
and Feb. 17, and, man, do I have a little scoop for you. The latter episode
features a guest turn by none other than Veronica's pa, Enrico Colantoni!
And that's not the juiciest part, this is: He appears in what can only be
described as a highly suggestive scene with another - hold onto your hats,
Neptune Pirates - dude. And you'll recognize this dude since he's a series
regular on the show. By my calculations, you've got a 50/50 shot of
correctly guessing which dude I'm referring to, so head over to the Ask
Ausiello Discussion Thread

Jonathan Storm: There's a familiar ring to quirky lawyer show

By Jonathan Storm

Inquirer Columnist

The American Academy of Pediatrics called for the cancellation of tonight's
premiere of the goofy-Gus lawyer show Eli Stone on ABC at 10. "Perpetuates
the myth that vaccines cause autism," said the academy president. "Height of
reckless irresponsibility."

Boston Legal, TV's all-time primo psych ward for courthouse crazies (a
senior partner who shoots people, an associate with multiple personalities,
another who's a former madam, another who whoops and hops, and a long
laundry list of outrageous clients and causes), has never been damned by
doctors, nor, at least in recent memory, by any august organization.

That's because - despite its imaginary high jinks and impossible legal
system, where cases are tried in 20 minutes by loquacious speechifiers,
before outrageous judges who are incompetent in every respect except their
judgment, and Denny Crane, the craziest crazy man, has never lost a case -
Boston Legal takes facts and the law very seriously. Producer David E.
Kelley started his professional life as a lawyer.

That show would never have somebody win a lawsuit claiming that a vaccine
caused her son's autism, as Eli Stone does, when, as the Centers for Disease
Control says, "the weight of medical evidence indicates that vaccines are
not associated with autism."

That's not important in Eli Stone.

Under the tutelage of Greg Berlanti, no entertainment slouch with Everwood
and Brothers & Sisters, among others, under his belt, Eli Stone uses legal
matters simply to advance its overstuffed story of a San Franciscan with
hallucinations who turns his back on a high-powered law career to defend the
downtrodden.

So the show, which piles fantasy on filigree, has no solid center. Any cook
knows a cake can't be only icing, no matter how many swirly confections and
cute sugar buttons.

It's not the worst thing you've ever seen, innocuous entertainment (despite
the inoculation controversy) that, like Boston Legal, includes the
occasional entertaining musical number.

Everywhere you turn, in fact, it's like Boston Legal, even if the caring and
quirky secretary (Loretta Devine) was a caring and hysterical teacher on
another Kelley show, Boston Public. And if Legal is already one of your
favorite shows, which it should be, Eli Stone seems simply extraneous, even
with a few recognizable faces in the hash: Victor Garber from Alias, Tom
Amandes from Everwood. Julie Gonzalo, no longer long-haired and blond, as
she was as Parker Lee in Veronica Mars, arrives next week as a hapless
first-year associate.

The show opens with our hero, played by Jonny Lee Miller, in suit and tie,
setting off from base camp in the wild Himalayas, as his guides crack wise
(in subtitles), and then it proceeds to reveal how he got there.

After he's interrupted while romancing fiancee Natasha Henstridge in his
living room by visions of George Michael giving the full lounge-show
rendition of "Faith," Stone goes for acupuncture from Dr. Chen (James
Saito), direct from the Charlie Chan casting academy.

Chen turns out to be less of a cliche than you think, but he's still
convinced Eli is a prophet. The more scientifically inclined in the medical
establishment, including Eli's brother, think his visions come from a brain
aneurysm.

"So that's my story. It's got Sherpas and George Michael. It's got cable
cars and prophecies and mystical Chinese doctors."

What? No baby, bathwater or kitchen sink?

To placate the physicians, ABC agreed to direct viewers tonight to the CDC
autism Web site, and also run a disclaimer: "The following story is
fictional and does not portray any actual persons, companies, products or
events."

To that obviousness, they could have added, "and it's not really worth your
time."
