Kristen Bell of 'Astro Boy' isn't your typical actress

The star says she's a homebody, not a Maxim model.

Here are the rules for interviewing Kristen Bell: No hugging or kissing.
I always assumed that those rules were in effect when interviewing
any young blond actress in Hollywood. But, it turns out that the
reason the rules had to be announced this time was that the actress
was sick.
"She just got off a plane from Australia, and she's feeling
terrible," a studio publicist explained. "But Kristen's a trouper,
and she didn't want to cancel the interview. Just don't hug or kiss
her."
I hadn't planned to hug or kiss her, but I felt like it after walking
into her Los Angeles hotel suite. She greeted me wearing a bathrobe
and carrying a tissue box. A trouper, indeed.
Interestingly, she looked better than most healthy people, and her
distinctive voice was strong and recognizable (she is the voice of
the narrator and title character in the TV series "Gossip Girl"). She
lends that same voice to the animated film "Astro Boy," which opens
Friday.
And her voice and body are in "Couples Retreat," the hit comedy that
is currently in theaters.
The Michigan native, after a brief Broadway run, was introduced to
television audiences in 2004 when she played the lead in the series
"Veronica Mars." After three seasons as the fearless private
detective, she played the mysterious Elle Bishop for 12 episodes on
the series "Heroes." She also had a memorable but short-lived role on
the HBO series "Deadwood," in which she was beaten to a bloody pulp
in a chilling scene that has been revisited countless times on YouTube.
On the big screen, she played the source of Jason Segel's pain and
suffering in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and in January, will be
elevated to full-fledged movie star status in the Disney romantic
comedy "When in Rome."
Between sniffles, the actress talked about her career, and what she
has had to do for that career. In particular, she explains why she
initially fought against posing for a national men's magazine, but
then relented under pressure from agents and network executives.
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Are you by nature an indecisive person?
KRISTEN BELL: Definitely. (laughs). I probably should have taken more
time to answer that. But I normally am very indecisive.
Q. The reason I ask is that it seems as if you can't decide whether
you want to be a TV star or a movie star?
A. Oh, wow. I don't want to be either. But I do want to be a working
actress.
Q. And you seem to work a lot. Are you a workaholic?
A. Yes, I am somewhat of a workaholic, and I get that from my father.
But I'm getting better at recognizing how important balance is in
your life.
Q. What does that mean?
A. A better balance between work and rest. Unless I feel whole as a
human being, I'm useless as an actor. I'm grateful to be working so
much, but I've learned to make sure I have a personal life.
Q. Describe your personal life.
A. I'm not anybody. I'm totally happy to be a homebody, and cook for
my friends. I don't enjoy going out and living the life of an actress
when I'm not acting.
Q. How are you able to do that? The temptations for an actress must
be overwhelming.
A. I'm never really tempted. I don't drink by choice. I think I'm
allergic to alcohol. I get a really bad headache if I have more than
three sips of wine. That's my body telling me it's not for me.
Q. What else don't you do?
A. I rarely stay up late. Sometimes, when I have movie-night with my
friends, I'll stay up a little later. I like the simpler things, like
hiking or walking to brunch on the weekends or riding my bike in
Burbank.
Q. You're a very boring movie star.
A.(laughs) I'm kind of a boring person.
Q. Why do you think you've been able to work so much in recent years?
A. I'd like to believe hard work had a lot to do with it, although I
have so many friends who are very talented and work very hard, but
are still waiters because they can't get a break. I may have been in
the right place at the right time. This whole business is a crap shoot.
Q. Do you have a sense that your career is about to break wide open
with the starring role in the Disney film?
A. I am aware of it to a degree, but I try not to keep it in my
immediate perspective because I don't want it to alter who I am. I
don't want it to affect how I act or how I live my life. It doesn't
matter how many sexiest vixen lists I'm on; it doesn't change who I am.
Q. Speaking of sexiest vixen lists, I saw your sexy Maxim cover shoot
from a few years ago. I guess you had to do that for your career?
A. I had to do that at the time, but it wasn't something I wanted to do.
Q. You don't seem like the type of actress who would pose for Maxim.
A. I'm not; and I fought it at the time. You have no idea how much I
fought it. It boiled down to choosing the lesser of two evils.
Q. Please explain?
A. This is a business, and I'm not stupid. I'm a smart young woman
and I had to make a choice.
Q. What was the other evil you had to choose from?
A. Angering some people I shouldn't anger. I could have risked my
career. So I did the magazine shoot. It's not the route I would
choose to go, but I had to do it and I tried to do it as tastefully
as possible. I don't want to be that type of actress.
Q. I apologize but I had to ask.
A. No, it's OK. You're the first person to ever ask me about it. Most
people assume it's a rite of passage for actresses in Hollywood. But
it's not. It's a choice, but at the time, it was a business decision.
It's not that I desired to be scantily clad on the cover of a magazine.
Q. You seemed to have survived the bimbo trap.
A. Yes, I have. Thank you.
Q. How did "Couples Retreat" fit into the master plan?
A. I accepted it before I even read the script because I couldn't
turn down the chance to work with Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. The
quality of the people involved, and the location of the shoot in Bora
Bora, made it an easy choice. It was a five-week vacation and then
they paid us for it when we got home. I feel spoiled even talking
about it.
Q. And were you a fan of "Astro Boy"? I can't picture you reading
Japanese comic books.
A. I had never read the comic books, obviously, but I also never
watched the various TV series based on the comic books. But I love
animation. I'm fascinated by it.
Q. So, you figured that you weren't doing anything that day so you'd
do the voice of Cora in "Astro Boy"? Is that part of the plan as well?
A. I don't have a plan. I fly by the seat of my pants. I do things
that are fun for me. When I stop having fun acting, I'll stop acting.
Q. With this movie and the series "Gossip Girl," you do a lot of
voice-over work. Why are you doing this kind of work when you're
supposed to be on a movie path?
A. I don't separate the work. It's all work for an actor. There is no
stigma about working on television. As for "Gossip Girl," I only have
to do it every couple of weeks and I do several episodes at once so
it's easy. I don't have to work as hard as the kids who are actually
on the show. It's fun, and that's the whole point.
Q. But I would imagine it's not very challenging for you as an
actress. What role has really challenged you?
A."Deadwood" was very challenging.
Q. That was pretty heavy.
A. I know. My parents haven't even seen that final scene because it
was so brutal. I'm so glad they haven't seen it.
Q. You realize that they can see it on YouTube?
A. Really?
Q. I'm afraid so.
A. That's not good.

Today in History -- Thursday, July 23 (Charisma Carpenter, Daniel
Radcliffe)

The Associated Press

Today is Thursday, July 23, the 204th day of 2009. There are 161 days
left in the year.
Today's Highlight in History:
On July 23, 1914, Austria-Hungary issued an ultimatum containing a
list of demands to Serbia following the killing of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand by a Serb assassin; the dispute led to World War I.
On this date:
In 1885, Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th president of the United States,
died in Mount McGregor, N.Y., at age 63.
In 1892, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia was born.
In 1945, French Marshal Henri Petain, who had headed the Vichy
government during World War II, went on trial, charged with treason.
(He was condemned to death, but the sentence was commuted; Petain
died in prison on this date in 1951.)
In 1952, Egyptian military officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser
launched a successful coup against King Farouk I.
In 1958, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II named the first of four women
to peerage in the House of Lords.

opening of the American National Exhibition aimed at promoting U.S.
life and culture.
In 1967, a week of deadly race-related rioting that claimed 43 lives
erupted in Detroit.

charges stemming from the hostage siege at three buildings the
previous March.

title, after nude photographs of her taken in 1982 were published in
Penthouse magazine.
In 1986, Britain's Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson at
Westminster Abbey in London. (The couple divorced in 1996.)
Ten years ago: Members of the Kennedy family gathered in New York
City for a private memorial Mass a week after John F. Kennedy Jr.,
his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, died in a plane
crash off Martha's Vineyard. Space shuttle Columbia blasted off with
the world's most powerful X-ray telescope and Eileen Collins, the
first woman to command a U.S. space flight. Morocco's King Hassan II
died at age 70. Woodstock '99 opened in Rome, N.Y.
Five years ago: Militants in Iraq took hostage an Egyptian diplomat
Mohammed Mamdouh Helmi Qutb, demanding his country abandon any plans
it had to send security experts to Iraq. (He was freed after three
days of diplomatic efforts.) The Pentagon released newly discovered

Alabama National Guard, though the records shed no new light on the
future president's activities during that summer. Joe Cahill, a

Northern Ireland, at age 84.

My Current Actor Obsession

Posted by Kelly

Tina Majorino.

Tina first came into my consciousness as the cute little girl in
1994's Corrina, Corrina.

Since then, she graduated high school at the age of 15, became a
trained opera singer, earned her black belt in martial arts and went
on to star in one of the biggest cult films of the decade (Napoleon
Dynamite).

But it wasn't until her turn as blue-haired Mac (Cindy "Mac"
Mackenzie aka Veronica Mars' Q) that Tina Majorino became a My TV
favourite.

Now, as I finally watch season 3 of Big Love, she remains at the top
of the "unsung supporting actress" list. Throughout the series,
Tina's role as Heather, a conservative Mormon struggling to look past
her own beliefs to be friends with the daughter of polygamists, Sarah
(played by the incomparable Amanda Seyfried, another Veronica Mars
alum), was a key part of what made Big Love such a multi-faceted
show. Heather's conflict with Sarah coming to a head in season 3 only
served to showcase Tina Majorino's underrated skill all the more
unmistakably.

A child star who turned out sane, complete with a host of hidden
talents, a good head on her shoulders and impeccable taste in TV
roles, Tina Majorino is one in a million.

Simply put, the girl is really cool.

Michael Muhney Replaces Chris Engen on Young and the Restless

Atlanta, GA 5/22/2009 09:50 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)

Former Veronica Mars star Michael Muhney will replace Chris Engen as
Adam on Young and the Restless. Engen allegedly walked off set after
refusing to go through with a gay kissing scene with costar Yano
Gellman.

According to reports, Engen quit before his contact was up because he
didnt like the dark direction his character was going in on recent
episodes.

Engen has already been replaced with Muhney, who loves the new role.
the new job is the likes of which i have never doneand i get to
indulge in some interesting, perverse, warped scenarios, he wrote on
his Twitter page.

The first episode Muhney will appear in airs June 25th.

EXCLUSIVE! Liam Neeson's co-star Amanda Seyfried talks

PopGoesTheNews.com >> Just days after the tragic death of Natasha
Richardson, her husband Liam Neeson's co-star is speaking to
PopGoesTheNews.com exclusively.

"Oh God, I feel really terrible," Amanda Seyfried said this afternoon
while returning from lunch at MB Co. in Yorkville. "I hope that...
it's unbelievable. I don't even know if I can talk about it."

The 23-year-old Mamma Mia! star, who plays an escort hired to seduce
Neeson's character in Atom Egoyan's Chloe, said she hopes he will be
able to finish the film. "Yeah, if he wants to. I don't even know
what it's like [for him]," she said.

Neeson left the set of the drama, which has been shooting in Toronto
for several weeks, after learning that his wife had suffered a fall
while skiing at Mont Tremblant. Chloe, also starring Julianne Moore,
resumes production this weekend.

[INTERVIEW] PORTUGESE CINEMA MAGAZINE TAKE

New Interview in the Portugese Cinema Magazine TAKE. The full magazin
(in portugese) can be downloaded by going to the website and clicking
on the smaller image on the right.

In case your portugese has been suffering a little in the last couple
of days, here's the translation:

His character was hated. But it was a hate that used to give us
pleasure to hate. Snobbish and almost always without answers for
Veronica, Sheriff Don Lamb was a fundamental part of the series that
brought energy to the main cast during 3 seasons. He accepted the
invitation from Take-Cinema Magazine to give us an interview, which
required a lot from us, since his answers were shorter than we
expected. Until he broke the ice with his famous TV-Series sentence.

Did you always want do be actor?
- Not always. Only after the second season.

What do you usually do for fun in your free time?
- I very much like to go out for a walk, read and play with my kids.

How would you describe Sheriff Don Lamb?
- a walking catastrophe.

Your last words in the Series were just as brilliant as unexpected.
Is there any curious fact behind this dialog?
- Yes. The producers were big fans of another series called M.A.S.H.
I think it was a time when the character says It smells like bread
roll when he was dying and that had a special meaning to them. They
wanted then to recreate the scene and I was chosen to be the lucky one.

When did you find out what would happen to your character? What was
your reaction?
- I stopped for a moment and I thought about all my friends and
memories that I made in those 3 years. It was really hard for me.

Are you still in contact with your co-workers?
-Yes, with some. As well as with some people from the production. The
work was temporary, but some of the friends I made there, are
definitely for the rest of my life.

Columbus Day and The Portal: Can you talk a bit about your characters
in both of those upcoming films?
- I am a detective that pursuits the character of Val Kilmer in
Columbus Day and in The Portal I am a scientific investigator that
chases a mysterious virus.

And then what happens ?
- Hopefully a new project! I am just about to start shooting my own
project and I hope that this time someone buys it . Not like the last
one I made.

Which directors are you fan of? Please mention one that you consider
above all others, with whom you would like to work with.
- Many. Scorsese, Spielberg, Soderbergh, Whedon. Many fantastic
directors that I could name right here and now. I would love to work
with all of them.

Which movie did you see most often in your life and who was your
first love in the movies?
- the movie was Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and my first
movie love was Elizabeth Perkins in BIG with Tom Hanks. I was 10
years old that time.

Which DVD from you collection , shames you?

Have you been to Portugal ?
- No. just not YET.

Three things that come to your mind immediately, when you think about
Portugal?
- Beautiful women, fantastic food and a phenomenal culture

Would you like to leave a message for our readers ?
- I wish all (including myself) a very prosper 2009 .

*I would like to thank my Brazilian Temp for the translation (for
which I will not vouch). I am sure my boss would agree, that I've
found an excellent use of temp resources :D.

Hillary, began a quick visit to Mexico to encourage its struggle
against narcotics and government corruption, and grow its markets for
U.S. products. John D. Ehrlichman, President Nixon's domestic affairs
adviser who was disgraced and imprisoned for his role in the
Watergate cover-up, died in Atlanta at age 73.

Five years ago: Guerrillas overwhelmed a police station west of
Baghdad, killing 23 people and freeing dozens of prisoners.

Twenty-eight people were killed when the glass-and-concrete roof of
an indoor water park in Moscow collapsed.

IDOL CONTESTANT NO AMATEUR

You're supposed to be a non-professional to try out for American
Idol, but it looks like someone didn't do their homework. Actress/
singer Jackie Tohn, who made it to the Hollywood rounds on the 8
season of American Idol, is no amateur performer.

Tohn has been professionally acting since she was 9, and appeared in
a number of films and TV shows.

Her first major role was on The Nanny. She was also in series such as
Strangers with Candy, Angel, Veronica Mars, It's Always Sunny In
Philadelphia, and most notably an episode of The Sopranos as Heather
Dante.

In film, she appeared alongside Denis Leary in Bad Boys, among others.

No wonder she had some extra dazzle for the American Idol judges.

Veronica Mars Creator Finds His Partygoers

      * Dec 18, 2008 09:27 PM ET
      * by Anna Dimond

While Veronica Mars reunion rumors continue to surface every now
again, Rob Thomas has been quietly putting together his latest
production, Party Down and he just assembled his guest list.

The Mars creator's new show will focus on six aspiring stars who work
together at an L.A. catering company, where the weekly events and
antics chart the course of the wannabes' fading dreams.

To serve up the food (and the laughs), Thomas has drawn from the Mars
pool and beyond, creating a roster that includes Ken Marino (aka
Mars' Vinnie Van Lowe), Adam Scott (Tell Me You Love Me), Jane Lynch
(Role Models, The L Word), Martin Starr (Knocked Up), Ryan Hansen
(Veronica Mars' Dick Casablancas) and Lizzy Caplan (True Blood's
vampire-napper).

Party Down is set to launch on Starz in March. Will you be joining
the festivities?

CBS Renews ‘Flashpoint’

Second season of 13 episodes will premiere in 2009

By Daniel Fienberg

September 19, 2008

Enrico Colantoni on ‘Flashpoint’

More than three weeks after it was renewed in Canada, the summer hit
drama “Flashpoint” has received a vote of confidence from CBS.

CBS announced on Friday (Sept. 19) that it has ordered a 13 episode
second season for “Flashpoint.”
Mostly, CBS’s announcement was a confirmation that the network would
be airing the 13 episodes, since Canada’s CTV ordered the episodes
last month for airing North of the Border, with CBS Paramount still
on board as a co-producer.
“Flashpoint,” which focuses on a specialized emergency rescue unit
out of Toronto, has aired on both CBS and CTV this summer. CBS began
by airing the drama, originally ordered in the spring as insurance
against a prolonged writers strike, on Fridays and shifted it
Thursdays early in its run.
For its season, “Flashpoint” is averaging more than 7.7 million
viewers on CBS, but Thursday night’s episode hit series highs in
total viewers (9.66 million) and adults 18-49, with a preliminary 2.6
rating in the key demo.
The second season of “Flashpoint,” which features Enrico
Colantoni, Hugh Dillon and Amy Jo Johnson among its stars, will begin
production in early 2009 in Toronto.
Neither CTV nor CBS has settled on a specific 2009 premiere date.

Heroes Season Preview: Meet the Villains, Part I

Posted on September 17th, 2008 12:03 PM by A. Hiro

The Heroes season three premiere is less than a week away. With that
in mind, USA Today recently previewed the chapter called "Villains."
"We built this volume around the idea of hitting the ground with a
tremendous amount of pace and adrenaline," Heroes creator Tim Kring
told the newspaper.

Kring went on to explain that this Monday's first episode sets the
tone for the season: "We wanted to let the audience know this is
going to be a roller-coaster ride," he added.

Sendhil Ramamurthy, who plays Mohinder on the show, echoes that
excitement.
"The villains bring a little bit darker feel to the show. Everyone's
stakes are so much higher," the actor said. "There's so much
happening this season."
Well, let's meet these villains in that case! Follow this article's
jump now to get to know the new characters on Heroes...
Character: Jesse Murphy
Played by: Francis Capra
Traits: Shares a connection with Peter
"There's really no limit to the amount of energy he can put out as
long as he's able to scream loud enough," Capra says of Murphy.

Character: Benjamin "Knox" Washington
Played by: Jamie Hector
Traits: L.A. gang member that leads a group of Level 5 escapees in
the premiere.
"He gets stronger when others are afraid, so he senses fear," Hector
says of Knox.

What We Do is Secret

By Timi August 5, 2008

R,1hr 32min
Genre:Drama
Releases: August 8, 2008
Director:Rodger Grossman
Distributor:Vision Films
Starring:Shane West, Ashton Holmes, Tina Majorino

Trailer:Synopsis: The true-life story of Darby Crash, who became a
Los Angeles punk icon before taking his own life in 1980, provides
the background for this gritty musical biopic. Not long after getting
kicked out of an experimental high school in Los Angeles, charismatic
misfit and major David Bowie fan Jan Paul Beahm (Shane West)
announces that he wants to form a rock band. With his best friend
Georg Ruthenberg (Rick Gonzalez), Beahm creates a group called the
Germs, mainly because their first choice, Sophistifk and the Revlon
Spam Queens costs too much to put on a T-shirt. Beahm appoints
himself lead singer, Ruthenberg becomes guitarist even though he has
no command of the instrument, and Beahm creates new stage names for
them George becomes Pat Smear, and Jan is now Bobby Pyn. After a
few less-than-impressive attempts to putting Beahms five-year plan
into action, the Germs begin to click with the addition of sweet but
musically inexperienced Lorna Doom (Bijou Phillips) on bass and
Arizona transplant Don Bolles (Noah Segan) on drums. Bobby Pyn gives
himself another new name, Darby Crash, and the Germs become the talk
of the Los Angeles punk scene with their reckless but literate songs
and Darbys aggressive performance style. The Germs become big fish
in the small pond of L.A. punk, but when hard drugs enter into the
picture, Darby begins alienating those closest to him, and after the
Germs collapse, hes at a loss for how to bring his grand scheme to
the next level. The real Pat Smear served as a music producer for
What We Do Is Secret, recreating the sound of the Germs and other
seminal L.A. punk groups for the soundtrack, while the surviving
members of the Germs played a series of reunion dates following the
production of the movie, with Shane West standing in as lead singer.

Today in History -- Friday, July 18 (Kristen Bell)

By The Associated Press

Today is Friday, July 18, the 200th day of 2008. There are 166 days
left in the year.

Today's Highlight in History:

Kristen Bell Confirmed For HEROES Season 3

The villainous electrical beauty Elle Bishop will menace our Heroes
again this season, and Kristen Bell is ec-static.

People magazine's CYNTHIA WANG reports that Kristen Bell (Fanboys)
definitely will reprise her role as the super-charged Elle Bishop on
Season Three of NBC’s Heroes.

Elle, who uses her electrical power in the service of her father
(Stephen Tobolowsky), the head of "The Company," was last seen saving
several "good guys" from an attack by series arch-villain Sylar (Star
Trek's Zachary Quinto). She'll be part of a new multi-episode arc in
Volume Three, appropriately entitled "Villains."

"I’m just happy to be electrocuting people again!" Bell told People
mag.

The Heroes season premiere is set for September 22.

Flashpoint debuts next Friday (stars Enrico Colantoni, Amy Jo Johnson)

By The Associated Press

Yes, there is life for scripted network television series in the
summer, or at least one filmed in Canada (and also airing there).

CBS' "Flashpoint" tracks strategic response unit officers in Toronto
whose typical workday might include rescuing hostages, busting up
gangs, defusing bombs and scaling tall buildings at a single bound
and rescuing suicidal teenagers.

They're master negotiators, to boot.

The show, starring Enrico Colantoni (Veronica Mars,Just Shoot Me) and
Amy Jo Johnson (Pink Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,
Felicity, Without Limits, Sweetwater: A True Rock Story), debuts 10
p.m. EDT Friday, July 11.

The movie represents a homecoming and more for Colantoni, who hails
from Toronto and whose brother retired from the city's real-life task
force as a sergeant detective after three decades.

Freaks, geeks and class on TV (Compares Freaks and Geeks, Veronica Mars)

June 27, 2008

I'VE REALLY enjoyed the recent series of articles and letters
challenging the predominant portrayal (or non-portrayal) of working-
class people on television ("Television's buffoons and bigots", "Was
Archie Bunker a middle-class fantasy?", "Where are Black workers'
lives on TV?").

I wanted to let SW's readers know about two more modern shows that
explored class and class conflicts in interesting ways. Both are off
the air, but available on DVD and well worth renting.

Freaks and Geeks, which aired for a single season in 1999-2000,
follows siblings Lindsay and Sam Weir at their Michigan high school
in 1980. Made by the people now responsible for Knocked Up and
related movies, it is in my opinion a far more hilarious, and
certainly more human, comedy-drama than their films.

Many of the scenes are ad-libbed by now-famous young comic actors
like Seth Rogen and Jason Segel (and the under-famous Martin Starr),
generating much more natural dialogue than the scripted slickness of
most shows. Refreshingly unglamorous characters, an awesome period
soundtrack and frequent allusions to the classic My So-Called Life
round out the mood.

A central storyline is Lindsay's decision to drop out of the
"Mathletes" and start hanging out with the school's "freaks and
burnouts." The consternation of her teachers and middle-class parents
and her gradual acceptance by her new friends is a standard
storyline, elevated by the way each character's humanity is slowly
revealed over the course of the series.

The class differences between Lindsay and her new crowd are
emphasized from the very first episode, when antagonist Kim taunts
Lindsay, "Hey Brain, I shoplift in your daddy's store. Kim concludes,
"You're just some rich kid who's trying to piss off her parents."

Again and again, Lindsay's boundless belief that you can do anything
you set your mind to runs up against the reality of her new friends'
lives. The show portrays, but does not celebrate, the kids' problems
and their sometimes poor strategies for addressing them.

Above all, Freaks and Geeks is a celebration of friendship, as the
often-contentious but very genuine relationships among the school's
various social groups help them deal with such predicaments as
failing grades, flawed parents, threats to be shipped off to the Army
and some very unfortunate wardrobe choices.

Very different in tone is the stylized teenage mystery show Veronica
Mars, whose first season centers on the title character's quest to
learn who killed her best friend. The setting is the fictional
Neptune, California, a dot-com industry "town without a middle class"
where "your parents are either millionaires, or they work for
millionaires."

The clash between these two groups, and Veronica's bitterness as an
outcast former member of the in crowd, are the backdrop to a tightly
plotted storyline. Veronica scores small victories against the
authority of her vice-principal and the petty local sheriff, but it's
never clear whether she can really win.

At the same time, the show sets up another season-long mystery: who
drugged and raped Veronica at a party shortly after her friend's
death? Its willingness to explore such a storyline for its main
character--not just her friends--sets Veronica Mars apart from other
shows about young women, even very good ones. (The WB network, for
example, refused to allow a comparable storyline in the fourth season
of Felicity, calling it "too dark.")

All these themes remain central to the show, as the class and racial
tensions become even more explosive in the second season, and date
rape re-emerges as a major storyline in the third season. To my mind,
Veronica Mars steadily declines over the course of its three seasons,
but all are fun and season one is among the best of recent television.
