No go with 4.2.2 btw ?
My 7100S has an English manual although with all the firmware updates
some of the menus have changed slightly to what is in the book.
ITV HD is also working now! I have to switch from another HD channel
before it will display a picture though.

Still no ITV using the manual tune on the box. I have to try and get
the box connected up to the PC this weekend and give the Vantage
Channel Editor software a go.

Great I guess my dragon CAM will do the same when I evetually get an
8000...but have you got ITV HD ?!
Just to let anyone know who is interested in trying out the below
that it works like a dream. I now have access to Channel 4 HD, Five,
Five US, Sky Three etc. Now I want a motorised dish so as to take
full advantage of the T-Rex Supermodule CAM.
You will need a Sky Digibox to activate the Sky freesat card and
every 4 - 6 weeks you will have to leave the freesat card in the
digibox overnight to make sure the card recieves it's keep alive
signal.
It's a real shame that a good proportion of the country have HD
Ready or Full HD Tv's but only a handful of FTA HD channels. And
only BBC HD is truly freely available without any hassles.

I have been experimenting with playback of various files on my 7100S.
I can open MP3, JPG files but have not had much success with DivX
files which I was under the impression would play through the Vantage
media player.
Maybe I picked up wrong in a review somewhere that this was possible.
Anyone tried and had any success with DivX would be glad to hear from
you!
New firmware available to download from the Vantage website:
http://www.vantage-digital.com/
Here are the release notes:
Release note for software 02.20
English
- Polish translation fix
- 4 channel unicable problem fixrd
- Tuner B can be handled in first installation guide ( HD 8000 )
Nothing major to write home about and the HD8000 features do not
apply to me. Don't see much point in flashing my 7100S until
something I really need turns up.
HD8000's are obviously out in the wild though now!
thanks for the considered reply
Hopefully that copy function is just for that reason

A: The timed recordings should work fine with the latest firmware.
The biggest fly in the ointment I find is that like most FTA
receivers the EPG can only show now and next for Astra 2 and Eurobird
1 (Sky & Freesat EPG's). This means you will have to enter reserve
times manually for whatever it is you want to record.

A: All large hard drives can be formatted as either FAT32 or NTFS.
Formatting a large capacity drive as FAT32 is not as simple as
formatting it as NTFS however. Windows 2000,XP and Vista will try to
force you to format it as NTFS which has a better files structure but
is not readable by most Non-Windows based PC's or devices. When you
get a new hard drive you will first have to partition it. If you have
never done this before you will find plenty of tutorials on the
internet. Onced partitioned you will have to download a FAT32
formatter. fat32format.exe is a small program that you can download
and run from a command prompt window to format your new drive as
FAT32. If you google about any of the above information you can read
step by step guides on how to do all of this.

A: The 8000 that I am aware has an internal SATA connection and 2
external USB connections. The 7100 has 1 external eSATA and USB
connection. I use the eSATA external interface on my 7100 with no
problems recording HD. Theoretically USB 2 should be fast enough for
HD recording. But I have as yet not tested it.

A: The option to copy files appears in the menus on my 7100 but I
have not used it. It probably has been added to the latest firmware
due to the imminent release of the 8000. Without a copy option it
would be very hard to get the data off the internal HDD without
removing it and sticking it inside an external HDD enclosure or PC.

This would be about the 7100 as the 8000 is not yet available, hoping
myself for a big improvement

Satellitesupersore sell the 7100 with 500GB and 750GB HDD's so this
eems big enough for me !

I would use a sata drive internally as the 8000 allows this unlike
the 7100

If it did'nt what would be the point of recording on to an external
drive !

I think you can but not 100% certain

I'm looking for a HD PVR to record the Olympics overnight.
I have some questions on the Vantage series 8000 which I am considering
for this.
1. Would you consider the software stable enough to do timed recordings
from BBC HD? I've read about lots of bugs
2. I read somewhere there is a limitation on the kind of hard drive
that you attach. Something to do with Fat32 format. Can someone explain
this?
3. Is the unit esata compatible? If not, is usb fast enough to record
HD?
4. Once its recorded tv to an external hard drive, does the Vantage
index and let you play back the recordings on the external drive?
5. If you're made a recording on the internal drive, can you backup it
up externally to free up space
thanks

You've probably still got to manually edit the values for the channel
via the vanatge channel editor on the pc ? Not sure though just
guessing, perhaps other ownders can get this sorted...
Another thing to try with a Dragon cam and sky card is Ch4 HD...
You are the second person that I have had heard to complain of dead pixels in TVs sold by Curry's. A question arises here as to "are they buying seconds" from somewhere to sell off cheap.
With Curry's always be aware of managers bargains, these are units that have been sold and returned as defective.
Funny story here, a friend brought a video recorder that was a managers special at Curry's, he sold it on. Shortly after he had a vist from police looking for other stolen goods! The first owner had written his name and postcode inside the cover of the VCR, it had been stolen by arrangement with a Curry's employee, and returned to Curry's when it had a problem. Thankfully the employee was busted and friend proved innocent.
By the way Dave of Satellite Superstore has told me that he is withdrawing from selling Vantage receivers.
Yours..........Roy.

I understand exactly where you are coming from Roy. A bad experience with a company can put you off their products for life.
I bought a Sony 32" Widescreen Trinitron about 10 years ago from Curry's. It cost £1200.00 which was a considerable amount of money for me at the time. The first set I got had an area around 1" across with half a dozen dead pixles. I was not best pleased and complained until I got a brand new replacement. This second set worked fine for around 6 months until I started to notice lines jittering across the picture. It took me over 6 months and three returns to Curry's service centre to get the problem solved.
Now I know a lot of people who would consider Sony one of the premium manufacturers of AV equipment in the world. But my experience of Sony AV products was not such a love affair and has in effect put me off Sony products for life.
The Vantage experience has
thus far not been so bad for me. Again being a late adopter of the product has helped in that more stable firmware was available. But I agree entirely with you that no product should be sold with firmware that essentially leaves it unfit for purpose.

Has anyone had any experience with the T-Rex Supermodule 4.6 CAM. I am
currently watching one on ebay that is already programmed and comes
with a loader card for updates. I realise a programmer is something
else that I would have to buy at a later date if I want to keep the
CAM updated.
Just wondering what channels this CAM would open up to me on Astra 2
and Eurobird 1. I realise there are a lot of adult channels but I am
more interested in children's, documentaries and film channels. I have
started to think about a motorised dish or even just adding a motor to
my existing Zone 2 dish if possible to open up my satellite options.
My other idea is to use a legitimate Sky Freesat Card with a T-Rex to
view Channel 4, Channel 4 HD, Five etc. I know the Sky Freesat card
needs to be put in a Sky Digibox to bring it to life as such. I have
an old Digibox I never bothered with after my last house move. My idea
is to use it to activate a Sky Freesat Card which only costs £20.00
and then use the T-Rex to get me the free channels that are currently
Sky freesat exclusives on my 7100S.
I don't know how this would work in practise. Any research I have done
on it normally just links to forums with people trying to use I assume
full access Sky Cards to get all the Sky premium channels on their
STB's.
Anyone have any input on any of my ideas and whether they would work
in theory?

Hi, thanks for joining my group and for the review. I had a quick look
on google just this second and it seems you are able to get ITV HD
working with this receiver :-

I think my negativity with Vantage has been borne out again with this receiver. It has taken so many firmware upgrades to get the thing to a reasonable operating level. The receiver, as with all Vantage receivers so far, they are placed in the market place in such a state that it is considered "not fit for purpose". The trouble is Vantage appear not to Beta test at all, nor do they listen to fair criticism.
I would not touch another receiver from Vantage with a barge pole.

I have only had this new receiver for about a week. It was an upgrade from a Pace DS810XE which was a very good box for picture quality but was very restricted with regards to manual searches for new satellite channels and poor CAM support. I thought I would give my first impressions of the Vantage 7100S as I know it has been out quite a few months now and the buggy firmware that has been reported on many forums seems to finally be getting stable.
First the good news. Build quality is very impressive and the touch sensitive front panel looks beautiful when fully illuminated. The Vantage matches my Pace for HD picture quality and it far excels it at upscaling most of the SD transmissions that I watch. The menu system is well laid out and looks extremely impressive. A friend who owns a Humax HDCI-2000 was most impressed by the look and layout of the menu system and said he much preferred it to the
menus on his Humax.
I am quite new to all the channel searching options that these dedicated satellite boxes allow. But the options available on the 7100S would appear to be very comprehensive. With the ability to enter additional transponder settings, VPID, Audio and PCR settings can also be set when searching. I can see no way NID, TID and PMT values can be changed and I am unsure as to what importance these values can have.
As of yet I have been unable to get ITV HD using settings other 7100S owners have had success with. Although this could be down to a lack of content being broadcast by ITV HD at the moment. If anyone has any recommendations regarding this I would be very interested to hear from you.
I found the boxes PVR functionality was flakey at the start and would sometimes not recognise my external eSATA HDD. But on updating to the latest firmware from the Vantage website (via
USB memory stick which was very handy)everything would seem to be working fine.
I have had one occaision where I had wanted to record the final hour of a film on Film 4. When I pressed the record button it asked whether I wanted the recording to stop at the end of the programme. Even though I said yes the box continued to record until I got up next morning which was about 8 hours of unwanted recording. Still it would have been worse if it had not recorded at all.
I have downloaded the latest channel editing software from the Vantage website, but cannot give any comment on it's usefullness as I have as yet not connected my 7100S to my PC. I have read that the channel editing software from Vantage is not as good as it could be but since the Pace I had before this had no sofware editing of channels at all, anything is better than nothing.
On the whole I have been very impressed with my
7100S. My friend who owns a Humax HDCI-2000 was green with envy regarding the PVR function and nice menu system so that was nice considering how well regarded the HDCI-2000 is in the satellite enthusiast circles.
I notice one of the posts in this group has been very negative regarding Vantage as a company. I suppose langauge can be a big barrier when dealing with companies in Europe. My German is terrible and it would be unfair of me to expect everyone to be able to speak fluent English. I have as of yet had no need to contact Vantage for technical support. But if I do and feel that it is unsatisfactory, I will let my thoughts be known about it on this group.

A manufacturer that does not answer e-mails and ignores dealer e-mails as well
A manufacturer who is not interested in talking to dealers to try to sort out problems
In short, a total waste of space
Will not be on our site much longer - any customer ordering is phoned in person and put in the picture - most opt for alternatives"

This is a message from a good friend of mine on the present 7000 version. He actually went to Germany to talk to them.
Most people know my observations on the Vantage receivers already. From my report.....
" The software writers set a low standard and failed to achieve it."
As far as Dr Dish is concerned I have through his reporting of the Vantage, have lost all confidence in him and his reporting. Commercial gain is now so obviously his business.
