The CBS Sunday movie also got off to a strong
start, helping to cap a first-place night for the
network, according to preliminary Nielsens (16.3 million
viewers, 5.2/13 in adults 18-49) that are subject to
revisions Tuesday due to the football overrun. <br><br>The
Valerie Bertinelli made-for-TV movie ``Personally Yours''
topped last season's movie premiere by 16% in adults
18-49 (5.0 vs. 4.3), finishing a competitive 3 shares
behind demo leader ABC. <br><br>ABC network finished
second on the night in viewers (14.1 million) and third
in adults 18-49 (4.9), close behind CBS (5.2) and
NBC (5.0). <br><br>Its ``Wonderful World of Disney''
picture ``Mighty Joe Young'' (9.94 million, 3.6/9 in
adults 18-49) was up 9% in the demo vs. last year's
opener, while ``Millionaire'' (a preliminary 20.2
million, 6.2/14 in adults 18-49) delivered sizable gains
over the time slot's ill-fated ``Snoops'' a year ago
-- up 53% in viewers and 32% in adults 18-49.
<br><br>At 10, though, ``The Practice'' (a preliminary 16.3
million, 6.2/15) was down vs. last season's premiere by 8%
in viewers and by 9% in the demo. (Last year's
premiere came just two weeks after the show was named best
drama at the Emmys.) <br><br>Reliable preliminary
nationals weren't available for Fox's baseball coverage
Sunday night, but the deciding fifth game in the
Yankees-Athletics series (8.2/13 in overnight ratings from the top
marketss) should rank as the top-rated postseason baseball
telecast of the week. <br><br>The WB's ``Hype'' (4.2/6 in
overnights) and ``Nikki'' (4.7/7) built solidly on their
lead-ins from the 8 p.m. hour: ``Steve Harvey'' (3.9/6)
and ``The PJs'' (3.6/5). The newcomers' 4.5 average
should translate into national scores that are roughly
double what the network averaged in the May sweeps with
``Movie Stars'' and ``Zoe.'' <br><br>Nielsen will issue
Sunday nationals Tuesday morning. <br><br>Each household
rating point represents an estimated 994,000 homes, or
1% of the country's TV households. Each adults 18-49
rating point represents 1.239 million viewers, 1% of the
U.S. total. A share is the same sort of percentage,
except it's measured against only the homes or viewers
watching TV during the time slot involved.
<br><br>Reuters/Variety REUTERS
Tuesday October 10 1:02 AM ET From:
www.yahoo.com<br>''Ed'' bowls audiences over in Sunday premiere
<br><br>By Rick Kissell <br><br>HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - NBC's
``Ed'' rolled a ratings strike in its first frame
Sunday, posting winning scores in one of the network's
toughest time slots. The series could be in for a rougher
time in upcoming weeks, though, when its formidable
regular competition returns. <br><br>In its first time
out, the critically heralded drama from NBC Studios,
David Letterman's Worldwide Pants and Viacom attracted
15.7 million viewers and delivered a strong 6.5
rating, 16 share in the prized adults 18-49 demographic,
according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen. It's the
network's best demo score in the Sunday 8 p.m. hour in more
than three years. <br><br>``Ed'' was the top series of
the night in adults 18-49, 18-34 (5.5/15) and 25-54
(8.0/17), topping both ABC's ``Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire'' and ``The Practice.'' <br><br>The only other new
series of the night -- the WB's ``Hype'' and ``Nikki''
-- also looked good, boding well for the network's
chances with a six-sitcom Sunday. <br><br>As for ``Ed,''
the drama about a big-city lawyer who returns to his
small hometown and buys the local bowling alley
improved by 9% in viewers and by 12% in adults 18-49
compared with the series premiere last season of ``Third
Watch.'' It will finish the week as the No. 3 drama in
adults 18-49. <br><br>Like ``Third Watch,'' though,
which eventually landed on Mondays, ``Ed'' figures to
have a tough time approaching these first-week levels
in future weeks. <br><br>In its first outing, ``Ed''
faced neither CBS' ``Touched by an Angel'' nor Fox
comedies' ``The Simpsons'' and ``Malcolm in the Middle.''
The CBS drama's premiere was pushed back a week on
Sunday due to a nearly one-hour NFL overrun in the East
(``Ed'' faced ``60 Minutes'' in the East and a repeat
``Angel'' in the West), while Fox is holding back its
top-ranked comedies until after the World Series. <br><br>A
year ago, the ``Third Watch'' premiere faced both
``Angel'' and ``Simpsons.'' <br><br>Still, the debut
numbers are promising for NBC, which has struggled in the
early hours of Sunday evening in recent years, making
it more difficult for its Sunday movie to compete
from 9-11. <br><br>On this night, for example, the
strong ``Ed'' showing enabled NBC's movie (theatrical
``Kiss the Girls'') to top the network's fourth-quarter
movie average of a year ago by 10% in adults 18-49 (5.5
vs. 5.0).
hehehe, I'm working on finding pics of the
cutie!, Liz, but unfortunately no luck! But don't worry!
If I could find Jen and Brad Wedding Pics first for
my other club, then I can do it for our Justin!
(Think I'm allowed to call him that?) hehe :P<br>And
sis, you are getting too popular at this club! hehe,
j/k of course!!! ;) <br>And Nell!!!!!!!! you actually
posted! Thanks ;) and Fran??? I know you joined, so post
a hello to us! hehe :) Please...<br>Love forever
and always,<br>Laurie
LOL Marian!!! :) (Do men blossom? If not, what do
they do? Hmmm..) hehe, I have to think about that one
myself... :0)<br>I agree though! I hope the writers give
him a lot more cuz he deserves it!!! He is like a
young Ed, come to think of it!<br>Hey Mandy!, maybe we
should've started a Justin Long fanclub...hehehe
:P<br>Laurie
He is really cute. Do you keep in touch with him?
So lucky!!! So, how old is he now? i think I read
that he graduated college and i was like whoa...he's
that old???<br>~liz<br>PS--If anybody has any pics of
him, could you post them in a album???
Aww, wow! :) What do I say to that??? Thanks???
Hehe ;) This happened over the summer...:) I really
think he IS gonna get famous, cuz he's got everything!
He's cute and SUCH a great actor!!! Here's hoping,
right? :)<br>Love always,<br>Mandy
Wow! That is so awesome! Your really lucky! He is
so cute! My gosh, don't you think? He reminds me of
a kid from school. When did this "encounter" occur?
Wow, yeah, you are really, really lucky! Watch him get
all famous and you can be like "Oh yeah, I've meant
him." I'm so jealous! Wow! all I can say is
'wow'!<br>~Liz
Thanks Marian, it's good to meet you!!! :) And
yes, Justin Long was Warren, the kid with the jello
mold :) Hehe...<br>Yeah, we also love the show "Ed"!!!
It's one of my favorites...and I've only seen one
episode!!! I agree, it IS pretty rare that I love a show
after one episode :)<br>Anyway, it's great to meet you,
hope to talk to you again soon!!! :)<br>Love
always,<br>Mandy
On Justin Long... I'm assuming he's the crush boy
with the Jello mold? (Oh, I know, I should read all
the posts before talking, but I have absolutely noooo
energy today.) I think he's supposed to be a little like
Ed was in high school, the same sweet and
wholehearted demeanor, but hasn't blossomed yet. (Do men
blossom? If not, what do they do? Hmmm..)<br><br>Anyway, I
utterly love this show, and it's rare that I fall in love
with a show first sight. <br><br>Marian
OMG Mandy! I thought you only wrote Justin
Long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe Sorry! :P <br>That is SUCH a sweet story!!!
I hope we'll get to see him more often in Ed cuz
he's such a talented cutie!!! ;) <br>ttyl,<br>Laurie
JUSTIN
LONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm only his BIGGEST FAN!!!!!! :)
:) I love that guy...he's the sweetest man on the
planet...and one increadibly talented actor, too!<br>Okay,
here's the 411...his mother is a teacher at my school,
and his brother went to school with my brother. Now I
ALWAYS bug Mrs. Long about Justin..."what's he doing
now?" or "any new movies?"...and so this summer I was
working at a theater camp that she runs (as a volunteer
junior counselor). She pulled me to the lobby and there
was this guy standing at the water fountain. He
turned around and she's, like, "Amanda...I want you to
meet my son, Justin." I nearly fainted!!! He was so
increadibly sweet...we spent the entire afternoon together,
and then another afternoon and a morning together!!!
I got his autograph and everything...and he wants
to stay in touch! Now I know he's not really famous
now...but he's almost finished filming a movie in Florida
(it's a Frances Ford Copolla movie called "Jeepers
Creepers" and he's the lead!!!) and I am just SOOOO
excited!!!<br>He played Brandon in Galaxy Quest, too!!! I watch
those scenes over and over again just to see him in
it!!! Call me obsessive...so what??? ;)<br>Love
always,<br>Mandy
Seems ver cool and welcoming here.<br>The show
was great last night and I plan to continue viewing
it. I have a little question about it...does anybody
know who played "warren" on last night's
episode?<br>~Liz
Let's see...<br>Well, there was poor Warren who
got inturrupted in his dramatic speech when Ed came
in Carol's room in armor!! :) I thought the jello
was cute! ;) <br>Then Phil was funny when he said,
"Used to be Philip, but I dropped the ip a long time
ago and never looked back!" hehe :0)<br>Laurie
