HERE'S WHAT'S WORKING FOR ME ...
Dollhouse renewed! The TV industry responded with shock to the news that Fox
decided not to cancel the low-rated series starring Eliza Dushku. The insiders
wouldnt have been so stunned if theyd stopped to consider what saved the show:
DVR fandom. Producer Joss Whedons willingness to restructure the shows finances
to make it work with a small but devoted audience. And the respect of critics
and fans for a program that creatively seemed to be a cut above. Really, its the
same combination that saved Friday Night Lights -- another show the industry had
given up for dead. (And word came in Monday morning that NBC is ending the
suspense over Chuck by signing it up for 13 more episodes. Once again,
recorders, restructuring and respect add up to renewal.)

*** What's on TVB right now ***

So, you've got the day off. Well, I hope it doesn't take up a big chunk of
your day, but if you're someone who cares about locally-grown, community radio
wherever you live, I'd appreciate your taking in this good long read I spent
most of the last month reporting and writing.

It's the story of KKFI, a community radio station in Kansas City that is
privileged to operate at 100,000 watts but for years has been the lowest-rated
station in the market and faces declining revenues and (uh oh) an aging
transmitter. Most people don't even know it exists. Why this is so, and how
KKFI could pull out of its death spiral, is something I talked to a lot of
people about.

http://tr.im/mh72

Also, for reasons relating to personal interest, I seem to be doing more
reporting about sustainability, specifically the social experiment that is going
on with the greening of Greensburg, Kansas. I've written several pieces of late
and encourage you to check them out at

In other news:

Craig Ferguson edged Jimmy Fallon in the weekly late-night ratings for the
first but certainly not last time ...
http://tr.im/llzh

What you can expect in the second season of "Dollhouse" -- this was a Q-and-A
I did before Fox unexpectedly picked up the show ...
http://tr.im/lcwK

What's getting pumped, what got dumped: My lowdown on the upfronts, which
unveiled the networks' fall schedules ...
http://tr.im/mlw1

Summertime is chock full of more new shows. What's a weary DVR to do?
