THIS WEEK AT THE TV BARN

HERE'S WHAT'S WORKING FOR ME ...
1. Flag-draped coffins. Since the president lifted the longtime ban, most
families are letting photographers take pictures of their war dead. They want
loved ones remembered. So do we.
2. KKFI reaches pledge goal. I’m writing a piece about Kansas City’s
community radio station for later this month. One thing I can report now is that
KKFI raised the $70,000 it needed during its spring drive that ended Sunday.
3. Hulu vanquishing YouTube. Thanks to an awesome interface and clever
marketing, Hulu is now the place to be; ABC just agreed to start streaming
there.
... AND WHAT’S NOT
1. Viewership off 30 percent for last Obama press conference. That either means
people trust the guy and will let him sweat the details, or this whole democracy
thing bores them.
2. Leno “not a talkshow.” NBC chief Marc Graboff said “The Jay Leno
Show” will be a “comedy program,” perhaps to avoid scaring advertisers, or
to avoid damaging the “Tonight Show” brand. But won’t an hour of bits like
“Headlines” and “Jaywalking” do damage to the Leno brand?
3. Bea Arthur, RIP. Would that episode where Maude gets an abortion — back
when it was illegal, mind you — stand a chance of airing today?
*** What's on TVB right now ***
I visited Greensburg, Kansas, the town decimated two years ago this week by an
EF-5 tornado, to see how successful they were at rebuilding as a green,
sustainable community:

...I also reviewed the second season of the show "Greensburg," which premiered
Sunday:

I broke the news that Adult Swim had acquired the rights to the UK version of
"The Office" with Ricky Gervais. That came during an interview with Adult Swim's
Mike Lazzo, which in turn came during a visit to the Williams Street studios
where all the fun takes place, which I documented in word and video but not
song:

Topeka's PBS station is launching MHz Networks today. In unrelated news, MHz
last week announced it's partnering with Al Jazeera English to give it wider
distribution in the U.S., starting with Washington, D.C., where it will be
available on digital cable:
