HERE'S WHAT'S WORKING FOR ME ...


1. "Grey Gardens." Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange are delightful in this HBO
movie, airing 7 p.m. CT Saturday, that reimagines the classic documentary as a
period piece, when Jackie Kennedy's most notorious relatives were young and full
of song.

2. Uniontown, Kansas. A history project at the rural school 10 years ago brought
Holocaust rescuer Irena Sendler to light. Now, her story is a "Hallmark Hall of
Fame" airing 8 p.m. CT Sunday.

3. KCTV-5. Three regional Edward R. Murrow awards, including best newscast and
investigation, put the CBS affiliate in rare company.

... AND WHAT'S NOT

1. Oprah Winfrey. Her show is predictable, her vacations plentiful, and her
future as queen of daytime TV questionable. The fact that KCTV's 4 p.m. newscast
is catching up to "Oprah" in the ratings says it all.

2. Katie Couric gets Walter Cronkite award for Palin interview. It was a turning
point in the CBS anchor's quest for respectability. But it wasn't award-worthy.

3. NBC leaves Ernie Kovacs off its "Tonight Show" website. He only hosted for
four months in the interregnum between Steve Allen and Jack Paar. But Kovacs had
just as much influence on late-night comedy.
