Features

Thor (Mark's take)

Thor, discovers Mark, is a comic-book film that gives us a different sort of superhero, the Norse god banished from Asgard and exiled to Earth and struggling to retrieve/earn his hammer of power. If I were to picture the gods in Asgard, what we see of them in this film is not what they would look like in my mind. Some veteran actors like Anthony Hopkins seem overqualified to play opposite Chris Hemsworth in the title role.

Hanna (Mark's take)

Hanna has been raised and trained by her father to be a perfect assassin, preparing for the battle he will have with his former employer, the CIA. Director Joe Wright takes a somewhat simple story and makes it complex in the editing and camera work. The action, says Mark, is strong and well filmed, but there really is not much in new ideas or ideas at all. Complex puzzle pieces fit together to make an overly simple and familiar picture. It only seems complex because Wright does not play fairly with the viewer.

Believing is seeing

I was directed to look at a website recently that had some digital mock-ups made of particular space vehicles from various SF TV and films as tourist attractions. Not real. Well, except maybe the Spindrift from 'Land Of The Giants' which the story of it being taken from the studio lot prior to it being destroyed has an element of realism about it.

Private Enough

A very short story about absolute super-duper-injunctions, although don't ask how Uncle Geoff got all the people of the world into prison.

Feel the anarchy... Anarchy Books

My name's Andy Remic, author of various SFF/thriller novels, and SF Crowsnest has kindly allowed me to hijack the site to bring you news of my new publishing venture, Anarchy Books. Anarchy Books is a radical new publishing company aiming to publish books, albums, films and video games, many of which share the same concept or story. Most books will be published in electronic formats, but there will be limited edition paperback runs as well.

How to win a girl when you're a mutant? Be super smart. Work for the CIA. Show off. Easy. Now, if only I was a mutant. Yes, it's a new clip for the X-men First Class movie.

We are the Night

Didn't you always know that IT girls were vampires? Well, here comes the movie to prove it.

Tintin's tickler

What do you get when Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson get together to work on a major comic-book property like Herge's Tintin? Well, here's the first tickler trailer for the boy with the quiff that just won't be put down.

Ve come in peace

There's a new trailer for the science fiction film Iron Sky, and the Nazis who fled to the dark side of the moon are coming back to Earth for peace… a little piece of Poland, a little piece of America (apologies to Mel Brooks).

Forbidden Planet: Artifacts from the Krell

One of the first science fiction films set entirely in space, "Forbidden Planet"
employed a variety of special effects techniques, which garnered the film an
Academy Award nomination for A. Arnold Gillespie (special effects supervisor),
Irving G. Ries (special effects cinematographer) and Wesley C. Miller (recording
supervisor). The team, along with Joshua Meador (an animator borrowed from Walt
Disney Productions) and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's special effects artists, used
animation effects, matte paintings and miniatures to create the forbidden world
of the Krell.

The display will illustrate the complexity of the film's production methods and
will include the "id monster" concept art, miniatures used in the movie
including the United Planets Cruiser C-57D flying saucer and Krell ventilator
shaft miniature, a hand blaster, and one of the film's most memorable
characters: Robby the Robot. The exhibit will also include the original
recording equipment used by Louis and Bebe Barron in creating the film's
all-electronic musical score.

Admission is free. Public viewing hours are Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 6
p.m., and whenever Academy public programs are hosted at the Linwood Dunn
Theater.

For more information, visit oscars.org or call (310) 247-3600.

Special guests Craig Barron and Ben Burtt will give a free Gallery Talk on
Sunday, July 17, at 2 p.m. Meet in the lobby of the Pickford Center. No
reservations required.

Mysteries of the Krell:
Making the Sci-Fi Epic "Forbidden Planet" (1956)
Presented by the Academy's Science and Technology Council

Forbidden Planet
Hosted by Craig Barron and Ben Burtt
A celebration of the technology behind "Forbidden Planet" featuring a screening
and a three-week display highlighting the production methods used to create the
sci-fi classic.

In the 1950s, when science fiction films were usually cheaply produced B-movies,
one production was light-years ahead: "Forbidden Planet." The 1956 release,
MGM's first major venture into science fiction, was a big-budget production
directed by Fred M. Wilcox that conjured another world, with crowd-pleasing
flourishes that included the now-iconic Robby the Robot.

Set in the 23rd century, "Forbidden Planet" tells the story of a United Planets
mission to the mysterious planet Altair-4. The crew soon discovers that the
planet's only inhabitants, Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira, are the lone
survivors of an earlier expedition, and they have uncovered the secrets of the
planet's vanished race, the godlike Krells.

Prior to the screening, Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Craig Barron and
Oscar-winning sound designer Ben Burtt will investigate some of the secrets
behind the making of the film. Barron will examine the film's breakthrough
effects sequences that used miniatures and matte paintings, as well as explore
how Joshua Meador created his animated "id monster" effect and combined it with
live-action photography. Burtt will explain how the electronic score was
created, using newly discovered source tapes from the film's composers, Louis
and Bebe Barron (no relation to Craig). The program also promises a special
guest.

New pictures uploaded from The Making of Forbidden Planet 1956

I had the experience of attending a presentation at the Motion Picture Academy
Theater in Hollywood Saturday with a long time friend and producer Mike Clark.
The small 200 seat theater was filled with the likes of John Landis and other
celebs and major studio production people. The presentation was about the making
of the 1956 scifi movie Forbidden Planet, the 'hero' robot from the movie
survives today in the private collection of movie producer Bill Malone and was
there along with props and miniatures used in the production of the movie. Greg
Jein (prop maker from Star Trek) Bob Burns and many other majordomo movie
production crew and collectors were there along with members of the motion
picture academy. I felt like I vastly out of my league but enjoyed the
experience none the less quite a memory to save and cherish.

Subject: Wondercon moves to Anaheim in 2012, C2E2 and Wizard World move shows
memfiss99
Send Email Send Email

Well it's official: after a bunch of rumors, at least ONE show run by Comic-Con
International is moving to Anaheim…and it isn't San Diego. PR below:
WonderCon, part of Comic-Con International's (CCI) family of conventions, today
announced that the 2012 show will be held March 16-18, and Anaheim, California,
will play host to the long-running comics and popular arts convention. San
Francisco's Moscone Center, WonderCon's traditional venue, will undergo
renovations in early 2012, leaving the 25-year-old show in the unenviable
position of either being canceled or finding a new venue.

In a move to help alleviate an overcrowded calendar, ReedPop's C2E2,
which has been waiting to announce dates for its own show in March 2012, will
now seek alternative dates while Wizard World has announced that it will
postpone its April 2012 Anaheim show.

"It certainly was not our wish to move," commented David Glanzer,
director of marketing and public relations for the nonprofit event. "However,
when faced with the prospect of canceling the show for a year or moving
locations, after careful consideration we decided to keep WonderCon on the 2012
calendar at a venue that could accommodate our needs."

"We fully understand the challenges of trying to secure dates at any
venue, let alone one undergoing renovation," said Lance Fensterman, Group Vice
President of ReedPop. "In an effort to minimize the impact on exhibitors and
attendees we are currently looking to shift C2E2 from our traditional March
dates."

Gareb Shamus, CEO of Wizard World offered a unique solution to
offset any potential conflict for fans and exhibitors: "All of us who produce
conventions know securing dates can often be a frustrating experience especially
when you find yourself having to move to a new city." Shamus continued, "Because
of their long history, Wizard World has decided to accommodate WonderCon and
postpone our April 2012 Anaheim show."

"We appreciate the efforts of Lance and Gareb for going above and
beyond in making the WonderCon transition more manageable," said Glanzer.

We sure would love to know what the Moscone Center is thinking now. And what
happy dances they are doing at the Anaheim convention center, as they sere a
suitor up until the last mintue for San DIego.
WonderCon has developed into the smaller, funner looser little San Diego and now
it could get even bigger with a venue that is behind it, and close proximity to
Hollywood stars.
HIGHLY notable in this press release is the appearance of the other two big show
runners, Reed's Lance Fensterman and Wizard's Gareb Shamus. This is, to our
knowledge, the first time ANY kind of joint statement has been made, and it's
nice to see. The con wars have ended. But it does explain why C2E2 in its third
year had yet to announce final dates.

Notes:   Today marks the birthday of the man behind (or more exactly, inside) everybody's favourite Robot B9 from Irwin Allen's TV series "Lost In Space" (1965-68) - Bob May. Born in 1939, Bob joined his theatrical family on the stage at age 2. His acting career continued after serving with the US forces in World War II, and he began to appear on TV shows such as "The Red Skelton Show" and "McHale's Navy". In 1966, he was cast in his most famous (and at the time, uncredited) role of the Robinson B9 environmental robot in Irwin Allen's "Lost In Space". This year Bob May would have been 70 years of age - Bob sadly passed away on January 20, 2009.

Around the Cincinnati area last night, Lost in Space and Batman were on MeTV, a
TV Land style channel. Digital broadcast channel 5-2.

Always great to see Batman, since it's not on DVD and never came to video
either, except for the pilot show/movie.

Good to see LIS being shown, too. The pilot, The Reluctant Stowaway, was on last
night. Some of us have all or most of the episodes anyway, but it's STILL a good
feeling to see it on the air! However...there were some SERIOUS audio issues.

I can't blow your mind with numbers and stats...let's just say the highs were
super-scratchy. Similar to the audio issues heard in the strangely-numbered late
90's Fox LIS VHS videos. Sometimes it went beyond scratchy, and became pure
static. I give the audio an F+ . I give the picture an A+ .

I don't think it was a local issue. Batman sounded fine and so did other
programs. There were other audio issues, too. The phrase "meteor swarm" was
contracted into "meaty swarm." I kept expecting to see slabs of beef flying by,
or maybe a Hungry Man dinner. When Smith was telling Will he had a virus, "Mom
and Dad" was contracted into "Momdad."

Finally, the audio degenerated into mostly static during the scene when they
discuss the parajets. That's where I bailed out in disgust. I plan on writing a
friendly but firm letter to MeTV about the audio issues. There's no need for LIS
to sound like that! If they need a better audio track, they can borrow my copy
of the pilot taped off SFC. It sounds like a million bucks. The Columbia House
tapes have excellent sound quality, too.

While I'm on my soapbox...I'm ALSO not too happy with words being put in the
Robot's mouth during MeTV promos. The voice is weak and thin and unworthy. It's
not even an imitation of the original. I'm SURE that Dick Tuefeld would be VERY
happy to help MeTV with their LIS promos, and provide the original voice. Other
than that...they do a really FUN job promoting LIS and I'm happy to add these
little gems onto my LIS miscellaneous tape!

Normally...I don't MIND poor audio. I'm able to rise above it and enjoy a story.
But in THIS case, it's extra-irritating because I KNOW how GOOD it SHOULD sound.

Maybe they used the same source as the ill-fated ratty-sounding Fox Videos.
Maybe they used a poor master copy, taped off the remastered video used for USA
Network, SFC, CH and the DVD's?

Did anybody else notice the same audio issues? Like I said, the other shows
sounded normal, but LIS was off-the-charts BAD.

Even with the horrible audio...I'm SURE a lot of NEW LIS fans were won over last
night!

And if I may sneak in a Bat-Word...MeTV showed two Batman one-parters last
night...I'm sorry to say that although I'm a HUGE fan, since the premiere, I
didn't remember that there were any half-hour one-part episodes! Definitely a
different experience. I knew about the three-part ones already. And as usual,
LIS props were scattered everywhere!

Right now on eBay, I've got a classic Hearst Screen News 16mm film, Focus on
1958. Sound. 14 minutes long and is a compilation of shots from events of 1958,
like tailfin cars, the space race, lots of old military techno gear, Elvis,
Nixon, Eisenhower, the cold war, weird fashions, Sputnik, tanks, Hula Hoops,
submarines and more. A fast-paced little film, done in the famous Screen News
style! Comes with authentic original case.

If you go to eBay and search the site for "1958 16mm Elvis Nixon" it should turn
right up and the description is more detailed. Has about a day left.
