Title:   46th Anniversary of "Dr Who"

Date:   Monday November 23, 2009
Time:   All Day
Repeats:   This event repeats every year.
Location:   Great Britain, The Universe
Notes:   On this date in 1963, "Dr. Who", the eccentric Time Lord from the planet Galifrey and his Tardis (a British Police Box "time machine"), protecting his favourite planet Earth against the Daleks and other diabolical aliens, made his debut on Britain's BBC television. The show was developed as "something different for the family viewing hour" to fill a programming gap on Sunday evenings. The latest re-incarnation of the good Doctor is David Tennant.

Right now on eBay, I've got a great 16mm print of Hanna Barbera's TOP CAT
cartoon. This quality 1961 non-hit cartoon series is a re-telling of the Phil
Silvers Sgt. Bilko show...Bilko castmember Doberman is even the voice of one of
Top Cat's gang! And the great Arnold Stang voices Top Cat himself. Too many
other famous HB voices to name...the usual crew.

TC is finally getting the credit he deserves! It's a well-made show, coming
fresh off the heels of The Flintstones' success. But it never caught on, then
along came The Jetsons. Why wasn't TC a big hit? My theory...first, no
significant female characters. Second, too much gambling, stealing, conning,
lying, womanizing going on! Bad example for the kids of 1961.

Channels like Boomerang and places like Kings Island really brought Top Cat some
new fans, like me. I was born in '61 and didn't see a TC cartoon till I was
about 40. I'm still a TC fan, and the only reason I'm selling the film is
because I'm trying to travel light, and I've seen it 20 times any way...time for
somebody else to enjoy it for awhile.

I've noticed there are lots of TC 8mm and Super 8 films out there, silent with
subtitles. This tells us that HB had high hopes for TC. I'm sorry to say every
8mm and Super 8 of TC I've owned is poorly transferred and plays poorly. You can
run 'em through a viewer and they play OK. TC is on the back of many many film
boxes, along with pics from other films. As a kid, I'd look at the box and
wonder who Top Cat was...never saw him on TV, and nobody I knew had TC 8mm
films.

If you do an eBay search on the phrase "16mm Top Cat," my film should come right
up. It's the episode called "The Unscratchables." I'd give the color quality a
7, but I've got a big picture from the film posted and you can judge for
yourself.

Carl Ballantine dies at 92

Comic actor known for his role in 'McHale's Navy'

By Mike Barnes

Nov 4, 2009, 06:01 PM ET

Carl Ballantine, who performed feats of bumbling comic magic on Vaudeville and on television, the movies and in Las Vegas, died Tuesday of natural causes at his Hollywood home. He was 92.

Perhaps Ballantine's most famous role was as confident con artist and torpedoman Lester Gruber on 1962-66 ABC comedy "McHale's Navy."

Ballantine, born Meyer Kessler on Chicago's South Side, learned magic tricks at age 9 from his barber. By 13, he was performing and supporting his family.

One night, a trick went haywire and he threw out some funny lines to cover things. The audience loved it, the club owner told him to "keep it up" -- and the Amazing Ballantine was born.

Ballantine caught the end of Vaudeville and the early days of television. He played the Palace in New York City, the Hippodrome in Baltimore and many other huge venues of the day.

On TV, he did magic on the shows of Gary Moore, Steve Allen, Milton Berle, Dinah Shore, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Ed Sullivan and David Copperfield. He played a magician on such series as "Fantasy Island," "The Cosby Show" and "Night Court" and appeared in scores of other shows.

Ballantine also did many commercials, including one for the California Raisins in which he supplied the voice for a character that looked very much like him.

Ballantine was the first magician to play Las Vegas when he was put on the bill in 1956 with Harry James, Betty Grable and Sammy Davis Jr. To promote the act, he rode the Strip on a horse.

His film credits include "The Shakiest Gun in the West" (1968), "The World's Greatest Lover" (1977), "Mr. Saturday Night" (1992) and "Speedway" (1968).

In 1971, he starred on Broadway in the 1971 revival of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" with Phil Silvers.

Ballantine is survived by his sister, Esther Robinson; his daughter Saratoga, an actress; and his daughter, Molly, an advertising executive.

DENVER, Pa. – Dan Morphy Auctions ventures into the fantasy fringe of Deep Space 9 on Nov. 13-14, with an extraordinary sale of robots, space toys, and Japanese superheroes, die-casts and vinyls at the company’s gallery in Denver, Pa., on the Adamstown antiques strip. The comprehensive sci-fi toy collection of nearly 1,500 lots was consigned by Mark Solondz, a New Jersey-based collector who “flew under the radar for years and made very smart buying choices,” according to Dan Morphy Auctions’ owner and CEO Dan Morphy.

“Although both Mark and his collection later became very well known, he formed the core of his fantastic collection quietly, and made many trips to Japan to purchase superhero toys that were not available to buy in the United States,” said Morphy. “We believe it is the largest single-owner robot, space toy and superhero collection of its type ever to come to auction. It stands apart from any collection we at Morphy’s have ever seen before because it contains so many of the great die-cast pieces made by Bandai offshoot “Popy,” in boxes with Japanese writing that are so desirable to collectors.”

The collection consists of five basic categories: robots (tin and some plastic), space vehicles, Japanese superhero toys, die-cast toys by Popy and other Japanese manufacturers (e.g., Bullmark, Takatoku, Ark, Grip, Marusan), and Japanese vinyls (both vintage and contemporary). A bumper selection of very nice-quality comic character toys is a compatible bonus.

Robot highlights include an X-27 Explorer, Telephone Robot and Mighty 8 – all of which are boxed. Also in the group are a Change Man Robot with lizard head that opens to reveal a man’s head, and a Mr. Atomic. The collection includes Masudaya’s Gang of Four robots: Lavender, Giant Sonic (Train), Radicon and Target.

Top lots among the space vehicles include a Space Patrol Car, boxed VW R-10, a boxed Super Cycle Space Patrol and a rare, smaller (9-inch) version of the Space Patrol Car, a toy that has sold at auction for as much as $10,000 in the past.

Tommy Sage Jr., Morphy’s chief operating officer and an expert in postwar Japanese toys, said he believes the superhero category will put in a very strong performance at auction. “It runs the gamut and is about 80 percent boxed,” said Sage. “To list just a few examples, there’s a Golden Bat, Astro Boy, Masked Rider, Barragan, Moonlight Man and Super Kun, plus quite a few Godzillas and Batman toys. There’s also a giant Mirror Man – the mask comes off and there’s a head inside – and a scarce, hand-painted Jetter Car. There are lots of really unusual vehicles in the collection, including airplanes, submarines, speedboats and motorcycles.”

The November auction at Morphy’s will mark a milestone, since it will be the first time a Japanese die-cast and vinyl collection has come to auction. Most of the Japanese die-cast pieces are boxed, and the vinyls are in their original plastic packaging.

“This represents a unique opportunity for collectors, especially those who do not live in Japan. These toys just don’t turn up for sale in the United States,” said Sage. “They have to be bought there and brought back, which is what Mark Solondz did.”

Die-cast toys made by Popy during the company’s golden era (1970s to 2000) are especially desirable to today’s collectors, since Popy was considered the premier brand of its genre. Popy was a trailblazer and even coined the now-mainstream terms “Chogokin,” which means “super alloy metal”; and Popinica, which merges the name “Popy” and the Japanese word meaning “mini-car.”

ToyboxDX.com founder Alen Yen, one of the specialists who cataloged the die-cast and vinyl toys for Morphy’s, said the Nov. 13-14 sale of the Solondz collection is especially significant because it is “the first time anyone has formally cataloged and priced these types of toys, which finally legitimizes what has been going on for 20 years. There have been private sales in the past, with collectors selling to dealers, or collectors selling to other collectors, including through eBay, but there has never been an entire collection offered at auction.”

Yen noted that Solondz’s massive collection of toys from Popy’s 1970s Chogokin and Popinica series includes several items of extreme rarity – a gold-leg version of Mazinger, a black Reideen, complete series of Ninja Captor and Robocon, and Godaikin deluxe sets, including Combattra, Voltes and Chokinzoku Tetsujin 28. Another prized catch for any collector is a very seldom seen intact example of Takemi Sandaio. Whenever an example of this toy is offered for sale – which is not very often – it almost always exhibits some form of damage.

“There are over a dozen Jumbomachinders, too, for those seeking the 2-foot-tall masterpieces,” Yen said, observing the auction lineup. “These include Getta 2, Dol, Pegas and all of the Shogun Warriors.” Productions from the 1980s are found in the collection, as well, and include Takatoku Valkyries in their pristine original boxes. A headliner within this niche category is a very rare Elintseeker.

There are many highlights among the grouping of vintage vinyls. Some of the top lots include a King Bockle. Karly-seijin, Pegila, Kendorus and Wakuranba, as well as a rare orange and red version of Supersol Kanegon.

The bonus selection of comic character toys to be offered in Morphy’s Nov. 13-14 auction exhibits excellent condition throughout. “Mark’s buying choices were excellent,” said Tommy Sage. “The collection includes a lot of Popeye, Frankenstein and Batman character toys, and all of it is really nice. Collectors will be pleased.”

The buzz in robot and superhero circles is that collectors from Japan and Europe are already lining up to buy airline tickets so they can fly to the United States to attend the auction and other auxiliary events planned by Morphy Auctions. In association with ToyboxDX.com, Morphy’s will host a reception for the visiting robot community on Friday evening, Nov. 13, at The Black Horse tavern and hotel in Adamstown. As an added attraction to their impromptu robot summit, many collectors will be paying a call to The Toy Robot Museum, which is less than a five-minute drive from Morphy’s gallery.

“This is turning into quite a destination event,” said Morphy. “We love it when collectors use our auctions as a hub for their gatherings and conventions, and that’s what this is turning out to be – an international convention.”

Dan Morphy Auctions’ sale of the Mark Solondz collection will take place Nov. 13 and 14. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the Internet – see Morphy Web site for details. For additional information, call 717-335-3435 or visit www.morphyauctions.com.

It’s a cookbook, or something: 14 types of Twilight Zone endings

The Twilight Zone

Inventory

1. There’s a perfectly logical explanation for all this.
In October 1959—50 years ago this month—renowned TV writer Rod Serling introduced his new fantasy anthology series The Twilight Zone with the episode “Where Is Everybody?”, starring Earl Holliman as a man who wanders through a recently abandoned town until he flips out, driven mad by loneliness. What weird juju caused the population of the Earth to vanish? Actually, no juju at all. It turns out that Holliman is an astronaut-trainee who hallucinated the empty town while in an isolation booth for a training exercise. For his first Twilight Zone, Serling started with the bizarre, then ended with the plausible—a trick he pulled a few more times over the course of the series’ five-year run. For example, in “Nick Of Time” (written by Richard Matheson), William Shatner plays a newlywed who becomes convinced that a roadside diner’s table-top fortune-telling machine is guiding his destiny, until his wife persuades him—rightly—that the machine is only guiding him because he believes it is. And in Serling’s “The Shelter,” a group of once-friendly neighbors reveal their true colors when a false warning of imminent nuclear attack leads them to storm the bomb shelter of a man they’d been honoring earlier that evening. The Twilight Zone never shied away from stories of the supernatural, but the most unnerving episodes suggested that the human capacity for superstition and paranoia could be more powerful than any magic spell or alien invasion.

2. Time is a closed loop.
In the season-one standout “Walking Distance,” Gig Young plays a man transported back to his own past, and given the opportunity to talk to himself as a boy. Instead, he frightens his younger self, and inadvertently causes an accident that leaves the boy with a limp… the same limp Young has to this day! Again and again on The Twilight Zone, characters traveled through time, only to instigate a change that would turn out to be no change at all. This happens most memorably in season five’s “The 7th Is Made Up Of Phantoms,” in which a tank driver leads his men back through time to the battle of Little Big Horn, while in the present day, their CO discovers that the names of his missing men have been engraved on the Custer Battlefield National Monument. What we do is what we have always done, even if we don’t know we’ve done it.

3. Lay down your burdens.
Serling could be cruel to his characters, even when they didn’t deserve it, but he also enjoyed giving stressed-out folks a moment of well-earned peace. In “Mr. Denton On Doomsday,” Serling tells the story of two Old West gunslingers who wound each other’s hands so that neither will ever have to take up arms again. In Matheson’s “A World Of Difference,” a movie character is lost in the reality of the actor who plays him, though he’s able to scramble back to the set before his existence is snuffed out for good. And in Serling’s sweet “The Changing Of The Guard,” a professor played by Donald Pleasence is surrounded by the ghosts of his former students, who convince him that he did enough good in his career to retire contentedly.

4. Karma is a killer.
Of course, just as good things happen to good people on The Twilight Zone, so bad things afflict the bad. Two of the best examples of this are season one’s “Judgment Night,” in which a former German U-boat captain relives his sinking of a freighter from the victims’ side for all eternity, and season three’s “The Little People,” in which an astronaut intends to toy with a miniature civilization he finds, until he’s crushed by astronauts even bigger than he is. Karma also undoes the title character of “The Self-Improvement Of Salvadore Ross,” a mean bastard who acquires the power to trade abstract goods, and uses it to steal the compassion from the father of the woman he loves—only to then get shot by that father, who no longer has a heart. And in “The Mirror”—one of the weirdest “karma is a killer” episodes in Twilight Zone’s run, and one of Serling’s occasional forays into Commie-bashing social commentary—Peter Falk plays a Castro-like dictator who inherits a mirror that lets him see his enemies, including his greatest enemy, himself!

5. When it’s time to die, it’s time to die.
No matter what crazy machinations Twilight Zone characters go through to avoid the man Serling often dubbed “Mr. Death,” the reaper always gets his due in the end. In Matheson’s “The Last Flight,” a World War I deserter travels through time to escape getting shot down, but when he realizes that the man he left behind is destined to be a great leader, he flies back to meet his own fate. In Serling’s “Execution” (from a story by George Clayton Johnson), two murderers from different time periods switch places and end up facing the deadly end meant for their opposite numbers. Whether Mr. Death comes as a creepy drifter (as in “The Hitch-Hiker”) or as Robert Redford (as in “Nothing In The Dark”), he always leaves satisfied.

6. Whoops, irony!
Ask people to recall a Twilight Zone episode, and odds are they’ll all cough up “Time Enough At Last,” adapted by Serling from Lynn Venable’s short story about a henpecked bookworm who survives an apocalypse and would have all the time to read he wants… if only he hadn’t broken his glasses. Serling would later repeat that sad-trombone ending in “A Kind Of A Stopwatch,” from a Michael D. Rosenthal story about a man who acquires a device that freezes time and lets him steal anything he wants, but then he breaks the device and has no one to impress with his wealth. The irreversible mistake is a Twilight Zone staple because it delivers such a good closing punch. A man slashes his vocal cords to win a bet that he’ll keep silent for a year… then finds out the other guy is broke. Survivors of an apocalypse freak out when they realize they’ve been taking the advice of a computer… so they stop following its advice, and die. Time-travelers kill each other over their cache of gold… not realizing that in the future, gold is no longer valuable. Whoops, irony!

7. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.
Yes, those aliens really do want to eat you—hence the name of their cookbook, To Serve Man. Yes, there really is a gremlin on the wing of the airplane in “Nightmare At 20,000 Feet.” Yes, the Martians in “People Are Alike All Over” are every bit as callous as human beings, which is why they stick us in zoos. Yes, our doppelgängers from a mirror universe can take over our lives, as they do in “Mirror Image.” The Twilight Zone was so committed to suggesting that the crazies might be right that Serling even snuck that message into an episode often cited for its condemnation of foolish human prejudice. “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street” is about how neighbors turn against neighbors when a power outage leads them to suspect an alien invasion. Yet at the end of episode, after showing how average Americans can become rioting fiends based on little more than conjecture, Serling reveals that the frenzy was, in fact, orchestrated by space aliens. Hmmmm.

8. It was Earth all along. (Or “Oh, I get it, they’re astronauts!”)
Serling was so jazzed by the idea of depicting Earth as an alien planet that The Twilight Zone actually aired back-to-back episodes in season one with that very twist. In “Third From The Sun” (adapted by Serling from a Matheson story), scientists flee a doomed planet that viewers are led to believe is Earth, when in fact the scientists are headed to Earth. Then, in “I Shot An Arrow Into The Air” (adapted by Serling from a Madelon Champion story), three astronauts believe themselves to be stranded on a desert planet and subsequently panic and kill each other, not realizing they’ve actually crash-landed just outside Las Vegas. Serling returned to this gag in season five’s “Probe 7, Over And Out,” in which a lost astronaut meets a primitive woman on a primitive planet and introduces himself as “Adam.” She, naturally, is “Eve,” and he decides to call their new home “Earth.” Matheson, meanwhile, flipped the script brilliantly in “The Invaders,” in which Agnes Moorehead plays a mute woman who fights off a tiny flying saucer… an American flying saucer.

9. Be careful what you wish for.
The Twilight Zone never aired an official adaptation of “The Monkey’s Paw,” but a couple times per season, Serling and his writers came up with an episode that illustrated how wishes can contain curses. In “A Nice Place To Visit,” a dead criminal discovers that living in a place where he can have anything he wants turns out to be his version of hell, not heaven. In “Mr. Bevis,” an iconoclast’s guardian angel shows him that he can only become a success if he loses his quirks—which the iconoclast refuses to do. In “The Man In The Bottle,” a man wishes for power and wakes up as Hitler. In “The Mind And The Matter,” a misanthrope creates a world filled with versions of himself, then realizes he hates himself. And on and on.

10. With great power come a lot of hassles.
As a corollary to the “be careful what you wish for” plot, The Twilight Zone frequently trafficked in episodes where people were gifted with powers beyond their capacity to control. Sometimes the results were comic, as in “A Penny For Your Thoughts,” a George Clayton Johnson-written episode about a man who gains telepathic powers, but has trouble interpreting what he “hears.” And sometimes the results were more horrific, as in the infamous “It’s A Good Life” (written by Rod Serling from a Jerome Bixby story), about a 6-year-old boy who can make his every awful, capricious wish come true. But, um… it’s good that he can do that. Very, very good.

11. Down is up.
For a classic example of how The Twilight Zone threw reversals at its audience, consider “Eye Of The Beholder,” in which an “ugly” young woman awaits the results of plastic surgery designed to make her look “normal.” At the end of the episode, after the truth has been carefully hidden from us for nearly 20 minutes, we discover that “normal” faces in this world resemble cubist swine masks. Yikes! An even better “down is up” episode is the relatively unsung Charles Beaumont-penned episode “Person Or Persons Unknown,” in which Richard Long dreams that he’s in a world where no one recognizes him, then wakes up in a world where he doesn’t recognize anyone. Serling didn’t go to the “down is up” well too often, because it’s a tough gimmick to pull off. But it’s great when it works.

12. Be the doll (or fear the doll).
The Twilight Zone had a serious jones for automatons of all shapes and sizes, be they robots or playthings. In “The Lateness Of The Hour,” a young woman resents her family’s android servants, unaware that she’s an android. In “Five Characters In Search Of An Exit,” the five characters in question are stuck in a featureless tub… because they’re dolls. In the touching “Miniature,” Robert Duvall plays a misfit who becomes so obsessed with a doll he watches at a museum that he becomes a doll himself, so neither of them will have to be lonely. Then of course there’s the well-known “Living Doll,” in which a young girl’s talking toy torments her father until he dies. Dolls, man. They’re freaky and tragic.

13. The inheritance blues.
Want that money that your nasty old relative has been teasing with you for your whole miserable life? Well, it ain’t gonna be easy. Your Uncle Simon might stick you with a robot version of himself when he dies. Or your elderly husband might drink too much from a fountain of youth and get turned into a baby that you’ll have to raise. Or if you’re a bit of a jerk yourself, your rich father might force you to wear a hideous mask that will permanently deform your face. There’s no money for nothing in The Twilight Zone.

14. We have to go back!
Serling revealed a sentimental streak to rival Walt Disney’s in several Twilight Zone episodes, most notably in the season-one classic “A Stop At Willoughby,” in which James Daly plays a wrung-out New York ad-man who pines for the classic small-town Americana of Willoughby, a place he often dreams about while commuting home by train. Finally, he moves to Willoughby for good, in mind and body: His mind wanders off to the idyll, while his body leaps to its death and gets loaded into a hearse owned by Willoughby & Son Funeral Home. Leave it to the more puckish Matheson, though, to take Serling’s romanticizing of the past and twist it into a bitter mockery. In the Matheson-penned season-three episode “Young Man’s Fancy,” a mama’s boy visits the house of his late mother, and reverts to childhood right in front of his new wife’s eyes. Welcome to Creepyville.

Burke passed away Sunday at his home in Palm Springs following a battle with leukemia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

Burke enjoyed a TV career spanning 40 years, but made his name in the gritty crime show Naked City.

Burke was nominated for two Emmy awards. He also had recurring roles in Dynasty and 12 O'Clock High.

Burke's film career began with a small role in the movie Golden Girl. Early in his career, Burke guest starred in the syndicated series, Highway Patrol and Men of Annapolis. In the 1957-1958 season, Burke appeared as Jeff Kittridge in five episodes of Barry Sullivan's adventure/drama series, Harbourmaster, which aired first on CBS.

Burke also appeared on Tightrope, Jack Webb's Dragnet, The Adventures of Superman, and in the NBC science fiction series The Man and the Challenge. In 1956, Burke was cast in the lead role of the television series Noah's Ark, a Jack Webb-produced weekly program about a pair of dedicated veterinarians. Burke was cast in the lead role of the police show Naked City, in which he appeared as the dedicated NYPD detective Adam Flint from 1960 to 1963.

The 12 O'Clock High role was Burke's last lead television role. He appeared in supporting roles in a number of television series, including recurring roles in Dynasty and Magnum, P.I. as Admiral Hawkes and in films such as The Thomas Crown Affair.

Burke retired from acting in the early 1990s.

Funeral services are pending. (Source: Wikipedia)

This has recently come into my possession and I do not need it so it is just sitting around gathering dust. I've done some research on the item, it is a tin toy made by the Japanese Osaka Tin Age company. Taken from http://www.ozziesrobots.com/id28.htm

5th item down
1990's Japan Osaka Co's Reproduction Battery Version Astro Boy with Original Box- Very Tough to find This mostly tin Astro Boy that was produced in the mid 90's & sold out quickly. Robot advances forward with lighted head & then chest door opens to reveal an awesome classic tin litho panel. excellent C-9.5+ condition with C-9.5+ Original Box , all paperwork & operates fine. Nice & easy to display.

It is of the highest quality in MINT condition. Includes everything it came with. Original box, paperwork, authenticity card with limited production number, etc.
Same Item is going on ebay for $500+ shipped, and another going for $1400. The value on these collectibles are just going up, and with the new astroboy movie coming out in the near future it should also rise!

Reply to: sale-92jqf-1366578195@... [Errors when replying to ads?]

Avid collector must part with treasures; paying for wife's GPS for her birthday. I have 5 officially licensed pieces from United Cutlery in original boxes. All of them display beautifully:

LOTR Hadhafang Sword of Arwen - UC1298

Before Arwen's birth Elrond wielded Hadhafang at the end of the second age of Middle-Earth, during the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in the great battle against Sauron. Later his daughter Arwen used Hadhafang when she aided Frodo in his escape from the Ringwraiths. The sword has an overall length of 38-1/8". The blade length is 30" with a thickness of ¼". It has a sharpened 420 J2 stainless steel blade. Wood handgrip with Elven vine design, solid metal pommel, rat-tail tang construction.  Includes display plaque that is 15-1/8" x 4-3/8" x 3-1/4" wood with silk-screened Elven design. Includes certificate of authenticity.

List Price: $312.00 ebay $168.21, $164.95 eshops $189.99 $169.99 plus shipping

You take it for $140

LOTR Uruk Hai Scimitar - UC1309

This officially licensed reproduction sword from The Lord of the Rings is the scimitar wielded by Saruman's vicious Uruk Hai. Orcs were created by the dark lord Sauron, but the traitorous wizard Saruman developed a stronger, more brutal version, the Uruk Hai, to destroy the kingdom of Rohan. This sword features a 24 3/4" high carbon steel blade and leather wrapped wood handle over the full tang construction. This item offers the exact details from the original piece and includes a certificate of authenticity and display plaque. 24 3/4" blade. 31 15/16" overall.

List Price: $98.99 eshops $119.99 $94.99 plus shipping

You take it for $82

LOTR Gandalf the White Staff - UC1386WTNB

After Gandalf's transformational battle with the Balrog, he began weilding this staff as Gandalf the White, and used it against the Ringwraiths in the battle for Minas Tirith. This staff is a licensed collectible from the hit motion picture trilogy. Stretches 72" overall. Fabricated in cast resin with intricate details and a bone white finish. Includes stainless steel wall mount with embossed design and antique iron finish. Hardware and instructions included along with a parchment certificate of authenticity

List Price: $224.00 eshop $134.00 $119.99 $129.95 plus shipping.

You get it for $97

LOTR The Battle Axe Of Gimli - UC1397ABNB

Known primarily for their innate abilities to smith metal and stone, Dwarves are proud and strong-willed, ready for battle at a moment's notice. Like many dwarves, Gimli, son of Gloin, favors the axe as his primary weapon. The massive head of this Battle Axe could be swung in both directions, making it a good choice for rapid moving combat. This large axe is a licensed collectible from the hit motion picture trilogy. Overall Length: 37-3/4"; Axe Head Length: 11-1/2" each; Axe Head Thickness: 3/8"; Axe head Material: Forged tool steel, weathered and distressed finish, false edged; Handle Material: Solid wood, genuine leather-wrapped grip, cast metal parts with an antiqued brass plated finish. Display: 7-1/2" x 10-3/8" x 3/4" wooden plaque with a silkscreened design. A parchment certificate of authenticity from New Line Cinema is included.

List Price: $349.00 US eshops $89.99 plus shipping

You take it for $68

This last one is for serious collectors:

LOTR Staff of Saruman - UC1385BKNB

This item is a first release in blue box, very rare (per ebay) and no longer being made.

This authentically detailed staff is a reproduction of the one carried by Saruman and prominently featured in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy presented by New Line Cinema. United Cutlery Brands, industry leader in fine movie reproductions has meticulously recreated the actual prop staff using the finest grade materials and craftsmanship of the highest quality available. Close attention to detail is a top priority in every piece. This towering staff, with an overall length of 76-1/8", is constructed of solid metal and the crown cradles a leaded glass crystal ball with frosted etch pattern. Each staff is presented with an antique iron finished wall mount with embossed designs. This officially licensed replica of The Staff of Saruman comes with a certificate of authenticity from New Line Cinema.

List Price: $349.00 US ebay $369.00 eshops sold out (the later release goes for $115 to $120)

I'll sell for $155

Shoot me an email if you have an interest. I may be able to discount further if you take home more than one piece. Talk to you soon.

Date:   Friday September 4, 2009
Time:   All Day
Repeats:   This event repeats every year.
Notes:   Today marks the birthday of the man behind (or more exactly, inside) everybody's favourite Robot B9 from Irwin Allen's TV series "Lost In Space" (1965-68) - Bob May. Born in 1939, Bob joined his theatrical family on the stage at age 2. His acting career continued after serving with the US forces in World War II, and he began to appear on TV shows such as "The Red Skelton Show" and "McHale's Navy". In 1966, he was cast in his most famous (and at the time, uncredited) role of the Robinson B9 environmental robot in Irwin Allen's "Lost In Space". This year Bob May would have been 70 years of age - Bob sadly passed away on January 20, 2009.

LIST: Top Alien Invasion Movies

In honor of Peter Jackson's sure-to-be SciFi hit "District 9" -- opening in theaters Friday (check for midnight showings in your area Thursday the 13th), we've cobbled together a list of our favorite alien invasion movies. If they landed on earth to terrify, teach us some moral lesson, or just to be cute, we've got them listed here.
When aliens land on Earth in the movies, their intentions are not always clear--until its's too late. Which visitors meant no harm to our planet, and which wanted to incinerate us or devour us one by one? Here's a look at the good, the bad and the incredibly ugly...

District 9 (2009)
While District 9 is a unique take on the alien invasion film, it tops our list because we're excited by the buzz. It was a big deal at Comic-Con -- voted 2nd only to Iron Man 2 in fan interest. Opening early (Thursday the 13th) in select areas, the story goes like this...

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare - they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable - he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Alien vs. Predator (2004)
The satellite of a company owned by the millionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) locates in Antarctica an unidentified source of heat and a pyramid showing evidence that three different primitive cultures built it together. Located in Antarctica six hundred meters below a deactivated whaling station, Weyland organizes an expedition -- experts in their fields to explore it, including an archeologist and an electronic engineer. Lead by beautiful Alexa Woods (Sannaa Lathan), when the party reaches their target, they realize to late that the place is in fact the temple and stage grounds of an ancient war between two breeds, and humans are only bait in this game.

Starman (1984)
Jeff Bridges brings his acting talent and sheer likability to one of our favorites. An alien who has crash-landed in the United States takes on the the appearance of a woman's dead husband and enlists her help to escape from pursuing authorities and rendezvous with a spacecraft on the other side of the country. As he learns how to be more human the alien begins to take on more and more qualities of the woman's husband, drawing the woman closer.

Independence Day (1996)
In the beginning of July, a strange spaceship is heading towards Earth. Humans received a strange signal, and this has turned into a global phenomenon. It was aliens. smaller spaceships began to cover entire cities around the world. Suddenly, the wonder turns into horror as the spaceships destroy the cities. Then, when the world counterattacked, the alien ships are invincible to normal weapon systems, then The President of the United States, decides to head to area 51, to formulate a plan to defeat the aliens. Now, the fate of the world rests on a handful of surviving humans.

Predator (1987)
Dutch and a team of commandos have been sent into a Central American jungle to track down some missing airmen that were kidnapped by terrorists. By the time they get to the camp, the airmen have been butchered in a very violent fashion and the commandos retaliate on the terrorists' camp. After that's over, they wait for a helicopter to pick them up, but something strange begins to happen in the woods. It isn't long before the commandos start getting killed off and Dutch and a girl from the camp, Anna, are the only people left and fighting for their lives. But what they discover is too shocking for them to imagine. What's been killing them is the Predator, an alien that hunts rare species and make his trophies out of their skulls. And human beings are the new species he has discovered.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Another Speilberg scifi movie, planes reported missing in 1945 suddenly appear in the Mojave desert. A commercial flight is buzzed by a 'bright' object that the pilot 'wouldn't know how to describe'. Roy Neary, while working one night, has a Close Encounter... The US Government determine where the visitors plan to land and create an elaborate cover-up to keep people away. However, a group of people, including Neary, share a vision which draws them to the place and a meeting with new, and old, friends.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Not the piece of sh**t Keanu Reeves version, the original black and white classic. An alien (Klaatu) with his mighty robot (Gort) land their spacecraft on Cold War-era Earth just after the end of World War II. They bring an important message to the planet that Klaatu wishes to tell to representatives of all nations. However, communication turns out to be difficult, so, after learning something about the natives, Klaatu decides on an alternative approach.

Mars Attacks (1996)
The Martians decide to attack our planet and devastate everything. Why? Because it's fun!!! They enjoy killing people and destroy buildings; they even play bowling with the statues at Easter Isles and pose for photos in front of temples as they are blowing up. Will somebody find a way to stop them or will everyone die in the war with these short, big-brained aliens? This star-filled movie is full of dark comedy and sheer scifi fun.

Signs (2002)
After the death of his wife in a freak accident, Reverend Graham Hess questions his faith and even leaves the church. Six months later, he discovers a gigantic crop circle in his yard. Similar events happen all over the world. Graham's children think it's aliens, his brother thinks it's pranksters, and Graham doesn't know what to think. However, as more and more strange events occur, he realizes something big is coming, and it's probably not going to be friendly. Despite some unexplainable alien weaknesses--like not being able to open a door, or avoid being pummeled by a baseball bat, M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs" is a white knuckle story of alien invasion.

War of the Worlds (2005)
Ray Ferrier is a working class man living in New Jersey. He's estranged from his family, his life isn't in order, and he's too caught up with himself. But the unthinkable and, ultimately, the unexpected happens to him in an extraordinary sense. His small town life is shaken violently by the arrival of destructive intruders: Aliens which have come en masse to destroy Earth. As they plow through the country in a wave of mass destruction and violence, Ray must come to the defense of his children. As the world must fend for itself by a new and very advanced enemy not of this world, its inhabitants must save humanity from a far greater force that threatens to destroy it.

Men in Black (1997)
Based off the comic book, MiB follows the exploits of agents Kay and Jay, members of a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth. The two Men in Black find themselves in the middle of the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies. In order to prevent worlds from colliding, the MiB must track down the terrorist and prevent the destruction of Earth. It's just another typical day for the Men in Black.

ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
A group of cuddly aliens visit earth and one of them is accidentally left behind -- stranded. A 10 year old boy, Elliot, finds the little alien and soon the two begin to communicate. E.T learns about life on earth and Elliot learns the true meaning of friendship. E.T. wants to go home, but if Elliot helps him, he'll lose his new friend. Steven Spielberg's tear-jerker was one of the first to present a truly lovable alien invader.

Transformers (2007 & 2009)
We can't NOT mention our favorite toy/robots/aliens who made an appearance this year and back in 2007, and took lots of our money at the box office. While both movies had problems--as we heralded by CBM fans ad nauseum, you can't help but hope the series continues. Based on the toys and cartoon, the Transformers series has plenty of legs as the Autobots and Decepticons battle it out on Earth and hopefully... on Cybertron. Let's hope the story lines will focus more on the Cybertonians and less on Shia Labeouf. Of course, Megan Fox can still be in it for a little eye-candy, but it would help if she didn't say anything. Am I right?

Superman (1978)
Finally, this wouldn't be ComicBookMovie.com if we didn't add the ultimate alien invasion movie -- Superman! The planet Krypton is doomed. Only one man, Jor-El, knows it, and rockets his infant son to refuge on a distant world called Earth. As Jor-El's son grows to manhood, he learns he possesses super-powers he must hide from the ordinary mortals around him. And so, he disguishes himself as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter.

UPDATE: As always, our awesome CBM readers have reminded us of some forgotten gems that need to be on this list. So, here are the honorable mentions... so far...
-Invasion of the Body Snatchers
-The Thing
-They Live
-Dreamcatcher
-Slither
-The Faculty

Robotnut's passion sparked by Lost in Space

Collector has over 400 toy robots

Sharon Hill, The Windsor Star

Published: Friday, August 07, 2009

Danger Will Robinson. Robots everywhere.

One look at Darryl Dupuis' collection of toy robots makes you want to flail your arms like that Lost in Space robot and cry out a warning or two.

Dupuis, a.k.a. Robotnut as he's called on the Internet and a personalized licence plate, has about 400 toy robots. It's a passion that goes back to that Lost in Space robot. Who wouldn't want a robot as a best friend, Dupuis says.

"If you're a little boy at that time that was like the coolest thing on TV because wow he's got this robot that can like crush rocks and blast lasers and do all this stuff and he's at your control."

Even kids who are too young for the Lost in Space reference or who are puzzled by toys not linked to a movie or video game are amazed.

The Windsor Community Museum had record visits during March break of the Windsor man's 160 toy robots and spaceships from the 1950s and 1960s. The free museum plans to keep the collection on display until Jan. 9.

The display includes original blue and red Rock 'Em, Sock 'Em robots with a crowd of what else, robots, as spectators. Then there's the green-eyed Thunder Robot with a propellor on his head and Blink-a-gear with rotating gears in his chest. Some, like the Japanese Thunder Robot, start at $3,000.

Dupuis doesn't know how much his collection is worth. Just the robots in the museum are insured for $50,000.

Collectors will pay $15,000 to $75,000 for rare robots and Dupuis said collections have sold for more than $1 million.

This is all for metal toys that in the 1950s and 1960s sold for a few bucks, he said.

Sometimes the cardboard boxes are worth more today than the robots with boxes fetching between $5,000 to $40,000 each, he said.

Dupuis, 44, remembers being two or three years old when his mom took him to a department store and bought him his first robot. A little red windup robot. That toy's long gone but Dupuis recently got his hands on another Mr. Robot.

He didn't start seriously collecting until 15 years ago. He said at first, it's nostalgia. You want a toy you remember from childhood. Then you get the collecting bug, he says.

Even the self-proclaimed Robotnut, with his own Robotnut.com website, had to cut back on his collection that once reached about 800 toys.

His favourites are Japanese robots with lots of action and flashing lights.

"They will walk, they'll stop, the chest will open up, laser guns will come out and start flashing and shooting and then the whole robot will spin around, kind of like spraying the area down with laser beams."

Take Rotate-o-matic with red eyes and a chest full of robot action. "When I was a kid that was the robot that scared the heck out of you," he says with Rotate-o-matic stuck behind a glass case. "You'd turn it on and hide under the covers."

Some collectors think the first toy robot was Robot Lilliput from Japan made either in the late 1930s or mid-1940s, he said. Some argue it's Atomic Robot Man from the 1940s.

After the Second World War, many of the first robot toys were made in the United States but by 1955 battery-operated toys started coming in from Japan. In 1956 Robby the Robot, of the movie Forbidden Planet, came along and inspired lots of copies. The once cheap toys have become collector's items.

Dupuis, a Kelcom technical supervisor, said as a kid, he figured when he grew up everyone would have their work done by personal robots. He's got lots of robots, just not ones that can do his job.

"Back then we thought anything was possible. We could vacation on the moon."
