That is what is claimed. Talking to TV Guide Magazine last year after Season 3,
Russell T. Davies said "The recession has hit British television, but fingers
crossed, it (the next season) will be a go. We expect things to start to move in
January. We've got great ideas for the show. I think there's a further lease on
life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season]." He also has
said that he has the next series planned out, stating, "I know exactly how to
pick it up. I've got a shape in mind, and I've got stories. I know where you'd
find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you'd go forward
with a new form of Torchwood." While a guest on Steve Wright in the Afternoon on
BBC Radio 2, John Barrowman stated Series 4 was on for 13 episodes.

Variety is the spice of life for Barrowman

* John Barrowman will be hosting another season
of Tonight's The Night in Glasgow, as well as
being the star in panto Aladdin, which he launched recently

21 May 2010

John Barrowman is stroking my leg.

But that is nothing, I mean, he has already shown
me his pants (white boxers from US store Banana
Republic) even though we met only 10 minutes ago.

It is fair to say the Glasgow-born singer, actor
and presenter is living up to his cheeky reputation.

The examination of my shins came when I asked him
what it was like playing a woman in his last
theatre role, camp musical La Cage Aux Folles in London last year.

"It was liberating. But I hated shaving my legs," he confessed.

"Do you shave your legs? Let me feel!" he says, rolling up my leggings.

Fun-loving Barrowman was born in Mount Vernon,
but moved with his family to America when he was nine.

Now 43, he has forged a career that started on
the stages of London and Broadway and later took
him to the Dr Who Tardis as the doctor's pal
Captain Jack, who became so popular he got his own spin-off show, Torchwood.

He has also just filmed a guest spot as murderer
Patrick Logan in American TV network show
Desperate Housewives, which will soon be shown on Channel 4.

But now he is ready to spend much of the rest of this year back in Glasgow.

In the summer he will film a second series of his
Saturday night hit show, Tonight's The Night, at
the BBC studios at Pacific Quay.

And then there's panto …

He is lined up for the starring role in what is
claimed to be the UK's biggest festive pantomime,
Aladdin, at the Clyde Auditorium this Christmas.

It will offer a special twist on the usual "It's
behind you" gags of panto with 3D sections.
Producers also promise Barrowman will fly without wires.

He might have built a career out of being rather
loud and brash, but Barrowman also has a caring side.

When he was a child at Mount Vernon Primary he
used to organise Opportunity Knocks contests in
the playground. When he returned there for a
visit recently he took the time to track down a
pupil he had teased on an earlier trip to make sure the child was not offended.

He also asked the teacher to send him a list of
all the children's names so could send them all a
signed picture (whether they want one or not, it seems).

John's already had talks about a part in
all-singing, all-dancing smash hit TV show Glee.
He is also reported to be working on a show with
his parents. They have been married 56 years and
Barrowman says they are the people he most looks up to in his life.

But what about Doctor Who?

Will Captain Jack meet the new Doctor, Matt Smith?

"Haven't been asked," he says, "but if I am I'll go at the drop of a hat."

But it really does not matter to him what he does
– just as long as he is in it.

"People say, 'Do you watch yourself on
television?' Yes. I love it because it is
something I have dreamed of doing from when I was a little boy.

"Scott (Gill, his partner) says, 'What are we
watching? and I reply: 'We're watching Desperate
Housewives because I'm on it'. He says, 'Do we have to?'"

One show Barrowman did not do this year was
Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest talent search Over
The Rainbow … because the BBC asked him "too late".

But would he have auditioned as a kid? He shrieks
excitedly: "Who wouldn't want to be Dorothy! I
could have been Nancy! As long as eeeeeeee
neeeeeds meeeeee!" he warbles, before crashing back on the sofa in hysterics.

"No. I would have put myself up for those roles.
The boys' roles …" he says breaking into a wicked giggle.

Of course John. And with his manager hovering it is time to finish our chat.

Now, in case you have not guessed I am a bit of a
fan – a 'Johnette' as we're known.

And I have one question on my list I have not
asked. But he has grabbed my crumpled piece of
paper. He reads: "What is it like being chased by
women when we sadly have no chance?"

He squeals. Wrestles me on to the sofa. And makes
kissing noises from behind a cushion.

One thing is for sure, with Barrowman back in the
city, Glasgow is in for a treat.

Except that John Barrowman was born about 45 minutes south of me in Joliet IL
this is an interesting article.

BBC Press Release:

BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US premium entertainment network Starz
Entertainment have today announced a three-way co-production partnership
that will develop a new series of the hit BBC sci-fi drama Torchwood. BBC
Worldwide will also distribute the series to broadcasters globally.

The 10-episode instalment will be written by a team led by Torchwood creator
Russell T Davies and produced by BBC Worldwide productions.
Davies and BBC Worldwide Productions' SVP Scripted, Julie Gardner, return as
executive producers with BBC Worldwide Productions EVP Jane Tranter. The
series has been commissioned by Controller BBC One, Jay Hunt, Controller BBC
Drama, Ben Stephenson and Starz President and CEO, Chris Albrecht.

While previous series were based on location in Cardiff, Wales, this new
instalment will see storylines widen to include locations in the US and
around the world.

John Barrowman and Eve Myles will return in their roles as Captain Jack and
Gwen respectively, along with new faces.

Announcing the commission, Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama
Commissioning, said: "We have a long history of working with many US
networks, but it is incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the
first time, as well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell,
Jane and Julie.

"Torchwood will burst back onto the screen with a shocking and moving story
with global stakes and locations that will make it feel bigger and bolder
than ever."

Jane Tranter, EVP, BBC Worldwide Productions, added: "Torchwood has
attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both the UK and US, and in
this new partnership with Starz, the next chapter will not only reward our
current fans, but also introduce new viewers to the most impressive
instalment yet.
"We're committed to programming exceptional television that is entertaining,
imaginative and provides a premium TV experience, and by any measure the new
concept for Torchwood fits that mandate."

Starz, LLC, President and CEO Chris Albrecht, said: "I've been part of
successful partnerships with Jane Tranter and the BBC previously, and I'm
very much looking forward to working with them again."

Torchwood is a drama that puts extraterrestrial threats into a very real
world, and asks how humanity deals with the danger – while fighting
mankind's darkest instincts. The series was originally commissioned and
produced in 2006 by BBC Cymru Wales, with the latest high octane series
capturing UK audiences of more than 6million.

BBC Worldwide has distributed previous Torchwood series around the world to
territories such as Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain, Israel, Russia and across
Latin America.

'Torchwood' Enters World Stage, Fourth Season Ordered
Production will now become a global partnership of BBC Cymru Wales,
BBC Worldwide and Starz Entertainment
By MICHAEL HINMAN Jun-7-2010
Source: Airlock Alpha
tochwoodside06072010.jpg

"Torchwood" was never dead. It was just ... well, sleeping for a bit.

But no more. The "Doctor Who" spinoff is coming back not only to
British and American audiences, but viewers worldwide with a fourth
season order that will include 10 episodes, and feature the return of
both John Barrowman as Capt. Jack Harkness and Eve Myles as Gwen.

Following the short-lived plans at the American Fox network that
ended earlier this year, BBC Worldwide shopped the series around and
developed a production partnership that will include BBC Cymru Wales
and American premium cable channel Starz Entertainment.

"'Torchwood' has attracted remarkable attention and loyalty in both
the U.K. and the U.S., and in this new partnership with Starz, the
next chapter will not only reward our current fans, but also
introduce new viewers to the most impressive installment yet," said
Jane Tranter, executive vice president of BBC Worldwide Productions,
in a release.

Following the highly successful "Children of Earth" miniseries that
aired last year, fans thought a renewal of "Torchwood" was a given.
However, at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, both executive producers
Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner were non-committal. Last fall,
when Fox announced it would develop an American version of the show
with Davies and Gardner, fans shared mixed feelings about how the
show may lose its soul if transferred from its Welsh home to the United States.

When Fox decided to not pursue the series any longer, fans were even
more concerned that the run of
"Torchwood" had ended. Instead, BBC is looking to making the show
into a worldwide phenomenon.

Unlike the first three seasons, "Torchwood" will no longer be based
in Cardiff, Wales, where it's filmed. Instead, production will be
on-location in various places throughout the world, including
locations in the United States.

"We have a long history of working with many U.S. networks, but it is
incredibly exciting to be working with Starz for the first time, as
well as to be reunited with the best of British in Russell, Jane and
Julie," said Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC Drama Commissioning,
in a release. "'Torchwood' will burst back onto the screen with a
shocking and moving story with global stakes and locations that will
make it feel bigger and bolder than ever."

Davies will return to showrun his creation, being joined by Gardner
and Tranter as executive producers.

It's likely the American run of "Torchwood" will first be aired on
Starz or sister channel Encore, which would make "Torchwood" a
premium cable series, much less accessible than its previous home of
BBC America in the United States. The release did not state where
"Torchwood" would air, but it's highly unlikely Starz would be
involved unless they were getting broadcast rights.

The cable channel Starz was launched in 1994 while Encore is a little
older, coming in 1991.

Like its competitors HBO and Showtime, Starz has been pushing itself
into high-end original series, beginning with "Crash" and continuing
with shows such as "Gravity," "Party Down" and "Spartacus: Blood and
Sand." It will premiere "The Pillars of the Earth" later this year.

Unbelievable. I don't have this channel nor can I afford to get it. Unless
they allow us to sign up for 3 months then dump it. This is assuming the
episodes are any good. The pedigree sounds reliable. And that it's on pay
cable means they can go as far as they like, say anything, do anything.

Starz shows are also available via Netflix's Watch Instantly, which is included
with the cheapest Netflix subscription of $8.99 a month. New eps of Starz
originals like Spartacus are available on Netflix WI the same day they air on
Starz.

You could also wait until Torchwood is done airing and then get a free Netflix
two-week trial, watch the show and then cancel.

Netflix Watch Instantly works both any computer (as long as it can stream video
and has high speed internet, e.g., isn't more than a couple of years old). It's
also on certain Internet connected settop devices like Bluray players and TiVo.

Thank you for the great information! I'd have to wait till after the show
airs because I need closed-captioning, and not cos of the accents.

I think it's probably worth remembering that, by the sounds of the press
release, this is a BBC production that Starz have paid to co-produce -- i.e. the
fact it's for BBC One is more likely to dictate the content than the fact it's
on Starz.

Over the last several months, I took it upon myself to start watching the new
Starz series "Spartacus Blood and Sand". I have found the 13 episodes of its
first season to be exceptional and never boring.

To give you an idea of What happens on Spartacus as it might relate to how
things are handled with Torchwood. I have not watched any other original
programming on Starz such as "Crash".

Andy Whitfield plays a Thracian of unknown name who is happily married. They
are facing hazards from marauding invaders and throw in with a local Roman
legion to stop the attackers. When it becomes obvious that the Romans have
other grander plans, Whitfield's character takes matters into his own hands.
The Romans don't like that and imprison him and his wife. She is sold to some
Syrian and he becomes a slave in gladiator training in the city of Capua and
owned by Battiatus (John Hannah) and his wife played by Lucy Lawless. He is
given the name of Spartacus and battles one man after another in the arena
hoping that Battiatus will reunite him with his wife. Battiatus does get his
wife back but has his thug mortally wound her to dash the hopes of Spartacus.
Once Spartacus does find out what Battiatus did, there is hell to pay. The
first season finale was called "Kill Them All". It was appropriately named.

This show has:

Extensive profanity
Dismemberments, beheadings and extensive flowing and splashing of blood
Full frontal male and female nudity (including Lucy Lawless)
Characters having sex (even male to male sex)

If you do have the occasion to see these 13 episodes, you might have the idea of
the scope and creative freedom Starz allows the producers to do what they came
up with.

If Starz allows Davies to do what they allowed the Spartacus producers,
Torchwood will transcend itself into a truly great series with legs on it for
years to come.

Yeah - if they go the route of Spartacus, the sex level will be going
waaaaaaaay up. I almost hope they don't...I can't watch Spartacus when my
17 year old is around because it's just not something I'm comfortable with,
and we've always watched Torchwood together. It's funny, the violence is
mostly surreal so that doesn't bother me (notable exception is the
punishment that happened to the new Gladiator in training when he tried to
kill a certain person -that was pretty graphic) but the group sex, yeah that
would be awkward.

I have a very hard time believing that's anyone's intent. Just because
Spartacus does one thing, it doesn't mean Torchwood will. Spartacus is nothing
like Crash, Party Down, or other Starz originals.

This is still a co-production, and the show still has to be broadcast on BBC
One. Even post-watershed, I have a hard time believing that we'll be seeing
anything even vaguely similar to Spartacus. I think the adult content will
remain fairly consistent with what we've seen so far -- adult themes, some
kissing, not much actual sex, little if any nudity and no extreme violence.

I think (hope) what Dean was getting at is that Starz gives its producers
creative freedom in general, which is a good thing.

I don't think I'm wilfully misinterpreting this post to say it suggests
Torchwood is a Good series, but to become Great is needs more "extensive
profanity; dismemberments, beheadings and extensive flowing and splashing of
blood; full frontal male and female nudity; and characters having sex"...?

I seem to recall, back before series one, the Torchwood producers specifically
said they were setting out to make a series that was adult, as opposed to Adult
-- i.e. something aimed at teenagers with gratuitous titillation. Some might
well argue they failed at this in season one, but Children of Earth certainly
hit the balance dead on. Fingers crossed Starz means "creative freedom" and
"creative freedom" means "make the show like it was but bigger", rather than
actually meaning they force it down some unnatural path.

Yay Spartacus! Filmed in New Zealand with lots of NZ extras (they stripped
every strip club and brothel in Auckland of their staff for the extras).

Absolutely gratuitous sex and violence - but done in a way that never seemed
to take it seriously. Very much like a Heavy Metal magazine comic.

ief-chris-albrecht-creator-russell-t-davies-.html

THR: What's the new "Torchwood" like?

Davies: It's very much the next step. It's not a new version, it's not a reboot.
We're simply moving countries. The show was previously a format show -- monster
of the week. The breakthrough was "Children of Earth" and that it became one
long story. It's not going to be 'Lost' and take 20 years to find out what's
going on. It's going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes.

THR: This was set up at Fox, what happened there?

Davies: We had a brilliant relationship with them. Thanks to them we were
allowed to develop it and take it to Starz -- some networks don't allow you to
do that, you know. They were very gracious. They have their new Steven Spielberg
series ("Terra Nova"). Starz was waiting for us with open arms.

THR: Being on Starz would also allow you to have more grown-up content.

Davies: We're simply going to tell a good story. I wrote the pilot 7 months ago
irregardless of network. BBC1 is a prime-time channel, but a brave channel. I
don't worry about content.

THR: In "Torchwood" people know aliens exist. I take it that will be true in the
United States as well?

Davies: Yes, in the "Torchwood" universe, you're in a place where aliens long
ago went public. It's like with terrorists. We all know terrorists exist, but if
you found yourself in a room with one, you'd be in for a profound shock. You're
never in a position where you take it for granted. I absolutely guarantee that
you can leap in as a new viewer and be able to find everything.

Torchwood This Week
June 12, 2010 - Volume 4, Number 18
by Benjamin F. Elliott

Torchwood is coming back for a 4th series - a year from now! US Premium Cable
outlet Starz http://www.starz.com is partnering with the BBC on 10 new episodes,
due to premiere in the US and UK in the Summer of 2011. John Barrowman and Eve
Myles are returning.

Starz is a premium suite of movie channels similar to HBO and Showtime. Starz
has been producing TV shows since 2008, again to be like HBO and Showtime.
Starz' shows include Crash, Party Down, and Spartacus: Blood And Sand. Starz has
a reputation for not interfering with TV shows, allowing as much nudity,
profanity, violence, and sexual content as the makers of the shows desire. Any
content restrictions and limits on the shows for time will likely come from the
BBC and their standards for whatever primetime slot on BBC One Torchwood will
air on in the UK.

With previous Starz' dramas, US subscribers to the online version of Netflix
were able to watch the episodes on that service starting the day after the Starz
premiere for no additional cost. We have no way to know if the deal with
Torchwood will be the same yet.

Starz has the exclusive US rights to the premiere of the 4th series. We do not
know if the shows will later become available to BBC America or other networks.
