Barrowman takes the top spot in The Stage 100 readers' choice

Published Thursday 4 February 2010 at 13:05 by Alistair Smith

Torchwood and La Cage aux Folles star John Barrowman has topped our
online survey asking readers who they believe should have topped The
Stage 100 this year.
John Barrowman, placed top in the Stage 100 readers' poll

John Barrowman, placed top in the Stage 100 readers' poll

Each year, The Stage publishes a list of who we believe are the 100
most influential people in UK theatre. Following the release of The
Stage 100 at the end of last year, we asked readers to vote online at
www.thestage.co.uk to tell us who they would have placed at number
one. We received more than 1,800 votes. Multiple submissions from the
same person were discounted and the clear winner - with more than
twice as many votes as second place - was Barrowman.

The Stage's number one - Ambassador Theatre Group joint chief
executives Howard Panter and Rosemary Squire - narrowly missed out on
the reader top 20, reaching number 22 in the voting. Only six of the
reader top 20 features in The Stage's own top 20.

Popular suggestions for industry figures who readers believe we
should have included in the full 100 included actors Simon Burke and
Kerry Ellis, as well as writer Mark Ravenhill, directors Jamie Lloyd
and Gregory Doran, lighting designer Paule Constable and New Wolsey
Ipswich chief executive Sarah Holmes.

BBC America is airing the episode of 'The Jonathan Ross Show' with
John as one of the guests (singing Copacabana) this coming Friday
12-February 2010 at 10pm eastern - unfortunately they don't list all
the guest for that evening but it does list all the others that were
on with John - including Shahrukh Khan; Lorraine Kelly; Marina & The Diamonds.

sigh

stupid people putting together the listing - do they HONESTLY think
that people here in the states are more interested in Shahrukh Khan;
Lorraine Kelly; Marina & The Diamonds - than John???? of the three
I'd only ever heard of Lorraine Kelly before and I certainly didn't
finagle a way to see the show across the pond for her!

good thing we were watching DW Sunday night and they had one of those
bottom of the screen blurbs about the show on Friday and actually
LISTED John....

Shahrukh Khan is a Bollywood movie star. I only know this because the current
episode of Tracy Ullman's State of the Union has a skit where the Bollywood
pharmacist does a production number to explain who Shahrukh Khan is to an
American. The Bollywood pharmacist is my favorite character on State of the
Union. While State of the Union is brilliant, the current episode is one of the
weakest ones in the entire series. The Khan sketch was really the only one I
enjoyed in the show.

Congratulations to Gareth David Lloyd for winning SFX cult hero award!

From SFX SCI-FI AWARDS 2010 WINNERS: SFX CHOICE

"Even the grave couldn't stop Torchwood's Ianto Jones, Gareth David-Lloyd,
guaranteeing his place in the SFX cult hero hall of fame. Graduating from a
glorified tea lady in season one to fully fledged action-hero sidekick by
"Children Of Earth" wasn't half as surprising as the outcry which met his
untimely death at the hands of The 456. We're still receiving emails about
it to this day and folk even left flowers in Cardiff Bay to mourn his
passing. If that isn't the sign of a cult hero we don't know what is."

Plaques presented at Torchwood's Ianto Jones 'shrine'

Feb 17 2010 by Simon Gaskell, South Wales Echo

DIEHARD fans of a fictional Torchwood character
have presented two plaques at a shrine dedicated to him.

Fans were so saddened when Ianto Jones, played by
Welsh actor Gareth David-Lloyd, was killed off
that they set up a real-life memorial in July
outside the Torchwood tourist office in Mermiad Quay, Cardiff Bay.

Now they have handed over plaques to thank
Mermaid Quay staff for keeping the tribute in
such good condition during the recent harsh weather.

The presentation was part of a programme of
events organised by the Save Ianto Jones campaign
– a group dedicated to getting the character back onto our screens.

Campaign members met Peter Black AM yesterday
morning after he voiced his support for them,
before going on to the shrine, where they placed hundreds of new items.

The BBC suffered a furious backlash from fans
when they decided to kill off the character and
the campaign has organised a range of events to
lobby for his return, starting with the pilgrimage to Mermaid Quay.

Lee Simmonds, Mermaid Quay centre manger, said:
"We support anything to do with local talent and
production and we will do our best to keep the shrine undisturbed.

"We pride ourselves on keeping Mermaid Quay neat
and tidy and enjoyable for everybody. We get
international visitors, there are mementos and
things left there from all around the world and
it is good for Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay and Cardiff."

John Barrowman: star of QVC. Really

John Barrowman was born to host QVC - and this afternoon he showed
the channel's viewers why. You should have tuned in

[]

John Barrowman hosting QVC.

If you're an easily persuaded housewife/husband with an expendable
income and a working telephone line, you may have just had the
greatest afternoon of your entire life. Earlier today, John Barrowman
- star of Torchwood, Desperate Housewives and that weird one-off
special where he sang a bunch of showtunes in a field - was a guest
on QVC. And he was magnificent.

Without exaggeration, hosting QVC was the job John Barrowman was born
to do. He has his own QVC membership card. He owns everything that
QVC sells. He even turned up at the studio dressed in QVC clothes. It
was a monumental hour - whether he was demonstrating the best way to
use the Glass Master cleaning accessories, or raving about the high
threadcount in the Northern Lights duvet sets, or sealing his CDs in
a Lock & Lock tub and then submerging them in water like some kind of
Tupperware-based David Blaine, John Barrowman was on fire.

However, as joyous a moment as it undoubtedly was, it raised a huge
problem for QVC. How will they ever be able to top it? American
home-shopping channels might play host to all sorts of stars such as
Marie Osmond, Paula Abdul and P Diddy , but we're still light years
behind all of that in Britain. Until Barrowman, the biggest home
shopping star we had was Peter Simon from Run the Risk, for crying out loud.

But the presence of Barrowman has raised QVC's bar exponentially. So
which other celebrities should follow in his footsteps? Fortunately
I've drawn up a wishlist...

Dappy from N-Dubz

Dappy has everything QVC could ever want from a celebrity guest. He's
got youth appeal by the bucketload, the potential to turn his hats
into the must-have accessory of the day and, crucially, a proven
track record with audience interaction. Buy now and the first 100
orders will also receive their very own personalised death-threat
text message completely free!

Stephen Fry

If the likes of QVC are guilty of anything, it's talking down to
their viewers. How amazing would it be if a channel were to wheel in
Stephen Fry for an hour of high-level discourse, mostly spoken in
words so long and obscure that nobody could possibly understand what
he was talking about? Having given this some thought, it seems
obvious that Fry would be best utilised in something like the
Milkhouse Creamery Candle hour with Pipa Vanderburg.

Tracy Morgan

There are purely selfish reasons for Morgan's inclusion. The 30 Rock
star is infamous for whipping his shirt off and threatening every
female in his immediate vicinity with pregnancy on live TV. If you
ask me, this is precisely the sort of behaviour that would improve,
say, the OPI Professional Nailcare show.

Shane Richie

Remember that Shane Richie used to co-present Run the Risk with Peter
Simon, and both were presenters of Win, Lose or Draw in their time.
Why not bring the two of them back together for an hour of fun,
nostalgia and - in Peter Simon's case - icy, vocal resentment at the
fact that Shane Richie ended up on EastEnders and he didn't?

And now it's over to you. Since it's a well-established fact that all
Guardian readers are huge fans of home shopping channels, who would
you like to see make a guest appearance? Your ideas, please.

How We Met: John Barrowman & Jodie Prenger

'John constantly gave me good advice, but it was
fur that really brought us together'

Interviews by Adam Jacques

JEAN GOLDSMITH

Consider yourself one of the family: Barrowman
gave Prenger an 'in' with his manager Gavin Barker and his circle of friends

John Barrowman, 42, is best known for his role as
Captain Jack in the 'Doctor Who' spin-off
'Torchwood'. He is also a singer and stage actor,
appearing in 'La Cage aux Folles' and as a judge
on the BBC talent show 'I'd Do Anything' in 2008.
He lives in London with his partner, Scott.

The thing I love most about Jodie is that she
makes me laugh. It goes back to the first day I
met her: she walked into the audition for I'd Do
Anything, saying, "Ooh, my feet are killing me,
can I take my shoes off, please?" I said, "Are
they really hurting your feet?" And she said,
"Yeah, they only cost me 10 quid." I just lost it
and laughed through her whole audition. Very
rarely do you meet someone in this business who's
willing to show who they really are, but with
Jodie what you see is what you get, which is the same with me.

The only time we could talk to the contestants
was in the BBC bar after the Saturday-night TV
performance. I would talk to each of them but it
was Jodie who was always coming to me for advice.
And, as the competition progressed, we weren't
talking about advice, but about home, family and dogs.

When she won, I was ecstatic that a genuine
person had come through it. We stayed in touch
and started going out to dinners and I'd have her
over to my house. I introduced her to my manager,
Gavin, who agreed to sign her. We've done all
sorts together since, including a recording for
my album. I could have had performers who were
more prominent in the pop scene, but I wanted
Jodie; for me it's about being loyal.

She's very supportive to me, too, coming to see
my shows, and when I had a tough time with the
Radio 1 thing [Barrowman exposed himself during a
broadcast 14 months ago], Jodie knew what I was
going through and was the first to get in contact.

She's met all my friends, who love her – in fact
one of them, Shirley, came to watch Jodie's every
appearance during the show. And she's great fun
on a night out. Our last extravaganza at my place
lasted till 6am; the champagne flowed, we had a
sing-along with my piano and we played truth or dare.

I've met Jodie's parents a few times, and
whenever they come to visit her from Blackpool,
her father always pulls me aside and says, "Thank
you, you do a lot more for her than you think you
do," so I know she's appreciative of everything.
But despite how we first met, I'm no longer her
teacher and she's not the student – that's not how we see each other now.

Jodie Prenger, 30, is an actor and singer who won
the BBC talent show 'I'd Do Anything' in 2008,
netting her the role of Nancy in the West End
revival of the musical 'Oliver!'. She lives in London

I first encountered John during the second round
of auditions for I'd Do Anything. He was one of
the judges, and I was petrified, like a deer in
front of headlights, but it was his laughter that
put me at ease. I was nervously trying to kick
off my shoes on stage, which still had their £5
sticker on the sole, and John spotted it, and he
just started giggling; John's always laughing.

I was going through these massive life-changing
reality experiences, and John constantly gave me
great advice for being on stage such as, "Just
act like you're the only one in the pub." But it
was fur that really brought us together. During
the filming of one of the episodes of the series,
his partner Scott called him to say his dog had
passed away; it was such a sad thing. I'm just
dead soft with dogs, so suddenly it was all I
could think about, so I just said to him, "Don't
even bother about us, we'll be fine, just go," as
if it was me running the show! After that we
talked about dogs all the time: I've got two
Yorkshire terriers; John now has a Jack Russell and a mixed.

Over the course of the rest of the show we
started finding out just how similar we were. A
lot of people say that I am a gay man trapped in
a woman's body. I've done a few radio-show
stand-ins for Paul O'Grady, and when I talk about
favourite songs, I have a gay man's song choices;
one of my favourites, "I Am What I Am", John sang
when I went to go watch him recently in Le Cage
aux Folles and I remember thinking, "Oh my God,
that's the perfect role for me."

When I first moved to London from Blackpool, the
thing that really scared me was being on my own.
But after I won the show, John took me under his
wing; he introduced me to his manager Gavin
Barker and I became part of this circle we call
the Barker Family. When you are a good person,
you surround yourself with good people, as John
has. As a group we've all been out drinking and
survived; a few of us went to The Ivy last year
for his birthday. He's a very handsome man, so if
we're out people always look at him, and when
they realise it's John, they go in for an autograph.

We've worked together a lot since the
competition. I've performed at some of his
concert tours, and when he rang me up in
September last year to ask me to do a duet track
with him ["So Close", from the film Enchanted], I
jumped at the chance – it meant a lot that I was
the first one he thought of. My parents and
John's parents all met up recently to listen to
the final version over a cup of tea and it was
fabulous seeing both sets of parents beaming with
pride. It's been great knowing someone who's in
the same industry, and he's been a fantastic
mentor, but most importantly his friendship has
given me something else: a home away from home.

John Barrowman's self-titled album is out on Sony

Is there someone on this list, in the UK, that would be willing to do me a
favor? the Royal Mint is issuing medals for Dr. Who but "due to licensing

as a fan would also like to have these. If someone is interested in helping me

John Barrowman - Track By Track : Video Exclusive

John Barrowman, Britain's most successful - and
comfortably Britain's best - all-round
entertainer releases his third solo album, the
self-titled John Barrowman on March 1st on
Arista, and we have an exclusive video of him
talking us through the album track by track, just for you.

Easily one of the most familiar faces on British
television and the West End stage, John Barrowman
is best known for playing Captain Jack Harkness
in the BBC series' Torchwood and Doctor Who, but
he has also been a judge on the award-winning
BBC1 entertainment shows How Do You Solve A
Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do and I'd Do Anything.

With the new release being quite possibly his
most personal album to date, it is a masterful,
evocative and uplifting journey into perhaps the
man's first love, musical theatre, comprising his
favourite moments from Cats, Mamma Mia, Jersey
Boys and Mack and Mabel to name a few.

The album is filled with instantly familiar
classics - Memory, The Winner Takes It All, My
Eyes Adored You - to the less immediately
familiar, such as So Close, a spine-tingling duet
with Jodie Prenger lifted from the recent Disney
movie Enchanted and chosen for his niece Clare.
Also included is a beautiful version of You'll
Never Walk Alone from Carousel, a song which his
mother sang to him as a child. Every track holds
an emotional relevance for John.

So, have a watch of this exclusive video and let
us know what you think, we think he's the nicest
man on the entire planet… please can we be BFF's?

I've read most of the posts since Dec and cannot see where anyone has any idea
of the future of Torchwood either in the UK or the US. I, like most of you, am a
big fan but I don't know if this is all in vain?
Does anyone have any answers? What is happening? The suspense is a killer!!!!

Good grief, pfyre. I have a lot of respect for you and have enjoyed your posts
over the years, but this is a bit over the top.

Yes, I asked about the So close tie in. I was curious if JB had said anything
to Db about using the same song. I thought given they toured together, JB might
have been inspired or that they might have compared notes about how they decided
to perform the song - the versions are very different.

And DB gave a sweet and honest answer. That he was surprised, not hurt or
bothered. And that of course anyone can do the music (assumedly with permission
of the copyright owner).

It was an honest question and a nice answer. Really.

I am quite tickled he answered my question. And tickled that falliing for
Torchwood, then JB led me to listening to DB.

Kaki

ps. the exchange is much easier to read on Twitter.

There is no news about US or UK version. It's very quiet on all fronts.
Unfortunately.

Doctor Who starts Series 31 in a few weeks around Easter.

It will air shortly thereafter in Australia and on BBC America starting on April
17th.

The world is clamoring for Who and the demand is so high that the world wants
the new episodes as soon as possible.

The Sarah Jane Adventures starts production on its 4th Series late this month
and a 5th series hass already been greenlit.

K9, which is not legally allowed to be part of Doctor Who universe, will
probably start soon with its half hour episodes. Only the pilot episode has
been aired.

Russell T. Favies and Julie Gardner apparently met recently or will meet with
Fox network executives about an American version of Torchwood.

John Barrowman is currently in Hollywood filming four or five episodes of
"Desperate Housewives" where he will be a bad guy with the episodes being aired
starting in late April.

Torchwood is a cash cow. BBC bureaucrats have to get their thumbs out of their
nether regions and make a decision. Torchwood makes a collosal amount of money.
Barrowman told an audience at Book Soup in West Hollywood that if Children of
Earth did great in ratings on BBC One, that Torchwood would be brought back for
ten episodes. The worldwide ratings were fantastic.

If and when BBC executives start thinking "Hey, what about Torchwood?" will we
the fans know anything. When the BBC does reach a decision which will very
likely bring the show back, this group and many others will explode with
activity to a point you may be receiving several daily digests daily in your
e-mail.

When there is really any news about the show's future, you won't be able to
escape the news. It will literally be all over the place. Davies did say that
there would be news on Torchwood after beginning of year and we are only two
months into 2010 already. The news will come and whatever happens, it will
happen.

Be patient.

'My hair is completely white', reveals John Barrowman as he admits
dyeing it black

John Barrowman maintains his youthful appearance by using Botox and hair dye

He's already admitted using Botox to maintain his dashing looks.

And now Torchwood star John Barrowman has revealed he employs another
tactic to help hold back the years.

The 42-year-old says he regularly uses hair dye to cover up his 'white' locks.

He claims he tried to revert back to his natural hair colour but said
his partner, architect Scott Gill, persuaded him to continue dyeing it black.

'My hair's only still the same colour because of the bottle,' he said
told Attitude magazine.

'I'm completely white. Scott and I tested it out a couple of years
back. I shaved my head and let it grow and no one saw it.

'I let it come out grey to see if it was time to let my hair go back
to its natural colour. He looked at me and said: "I'm not so ready
for that yet". And he's older than me. he's 47 this year but looks
like he's 20.'

The actor and singer, who has just released a new album, admitted in
2008 that he used Botox to maintain his wrinkle-free complexion.

He said he had the toxin injected around his eyes to banish the creases.

He said: 'I don't swear by it, but I think it's quite good. The key
is to not do the forehead. Men need forehead lines and doing the
forehead makes you look like Nicole Kidman!

'If you're going to do anything, just do it round the eyes, that's
all men need.'

Barrowman also said that he and Scott had talked about adopting a child.

'I'm always bringing it up,' he said. 'I don't know if he is ready or
if he would do it. I don't know how I'm going to get around it, but
I'm going to have to do it at some point.

'I think it's important for gay men to adopt or to have their own
kids, because then we can instill our own values in those children.

'Gay couples have a lot to offer. I don't care what anybody else
says, any home that shows love and tenderness and care to a child is
a home that deserves to have children in it.'
