Just an illusion...
6:02pm Monday 8th December 2008

By Hilary Porter

EVER had an offer you can't refuse? I have – it
was a recent invitation from world-famous illusionists, The Twins.

"We'd like to put you on The Table of Death," was
the somewhat macabre yet intriguing message on my answer-machine.

Now Wareham- based identical twins Paul and Gary
Hardy-Brown are very charming, gentle-natured individuals.

But with the table booked – for a date that had
nothing to do with dinner! – I wondered if this
spine-tingling encounter with them was set to be one meeting too many.

Our rendezvous was at an aircraft hangar at
Bournemouth Airport where, cloaked in secrecy,
they had been designing and making their
trademark large-scale magical illusions for the nation's major pantomimes.

As I arrived they were tinkering with some
"magical" devices to try out on Christopher
Biggins in Southampton Mayflower's musical
pantomime Cinderella (which opens this weekend and runs until January 17).

I raise my hat to Biggins, who, on his way to
winning last year's I'm a Celebrity … endured
being swamped with rotten eggs, maggots, decaying
fish and cockroaches, and managed to eat – after
15 minutes of chewing – a kangaroo penis and a
dish of vomit-tasting witchetty grubs.

But had the twins managed to come up with a form
or torture worse than any of the infamous
Bushtucker Trials – all in the name of entertainment?

I was sworn to secrecy over their plans for
Biggins and his Mayflower co-stars Matthew Kelly,
Craig McLachlan and Stefanie Powers.

And they never did tell me what they have in
store for Billy Pearce in Cinderella at the Bradford Alhambra.

But The Twins were able to give me a taste of the
horrors that await John Barrowman, star of Doctor
Who and Torchwood, as he headlines in Birmingham
Hippodrome's production of Robin Hood.

Of course, Barrowman's TV character, Captain Jack
Harkness, cannot be killed – only banished to another galaxy.

But, as I agreed to try out the illusion The
Twins have lined up for him, I was all too aware of my own mortality.

Inside the bowels of the hangar, I came face to
face with the monster Barrowman is set to meet –
a huge solid air construction with 26 2ft spikes
like menacing jaws ready to impale anyone who dares get too close.

Almost as soon as I arrived, Gary released a rope
that set the 200-kilo vice crashing down.

"Would you like to try it out?" asked Paul.

Realising that these spikes are for real, and
don't magically recede or disappear, I almost refused.

But the photographer was ready and waiting – and
hadn't I promised to lie on their Table of Death?

It certainly felt like the point of no return as
they shackled me with chains and padlocked cuffs,
bolted my feet under an iron bar, chained my arms
above my head and lay me down on the cold, hard table.

Escape was impossible. I was instantly reminded
me of those medieval torture racks.

"I'm not Houdini, you know … you do know what
you're doing … have Health and Safety looked at this?" I rambled.

Was it the coldness of the hangar or was I really
shaking with fear as they proceeded to lower the
spikes so they were almost touching my body?

I was terrified and pleaded with them not to let
it go wrong. It would have been an instant,
painful and bloody death had that slim rope slipped from their hands!

The Twins revealed that Titan – an 8ft steel
robot that is conjured back from the future to
aid the Sheriff of Nottingham's quest to defeat
Robin Hood – would set fire to the rope each
night that sends the spikes crashing down as John
Barrowman lies chained on the table behind a curtain.

Apparently he has just seconds to escape to reappear in the audience.

It's a phenomenal piece of magic.

Subject: Sarah Jane Season Finale - Spoilers and Review
dean_l_kaufm...

Hi everybody:

Two more weeks until a new Doctor Who.

Now on to more pressing matters. When I reviewed the last two
episodes shown of "The Sarah Jane Adventures", I neglected to mention
something that really, really bothered me.

I realize attitudes have changed a great deal over the years as to how
people treat each other. While I know that there are racist jabs all
over the world about people and ethnicities, there was what I believe
to be a racial slur made against the character of Rani Chandra. This
happened in Part 2 of "The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith. I don't
know if this passes for an ethnic slur in the UK or once did, but
hearing it made me cringe. It felt racist. Having grown up through
the American civil rights movement, it took my attention away from the
enjoyment of the story hearing how Rani must be from the Punjab. I
don't know it is a slur or not, but it felt really out of place.

Monday night, Part 2 aired of "Enemy of the Bane", which has nothing
to do with the strongman who broke Batman's back. The following
contains reviews and spoilers for Monday's episode:

With that out of the way, first some corrections to what I said last
time. The alien Wormwood and the Sontaran are trying to resurrect is
called Horath not Horvath. The scroll from the Black Archive, not the
Dark Archive, is the key to finding the body of Horath. As close as
as UNIT came to apprehending, the Brigadier, Sarah and Rani, they did
get away, but UNIT is on their trail.

Essentially, this episode had a lot of running around. Everybody
hides for a little bit in the flower shop. Sontaran shows up.
Wormwood threatens to kill everybody. Luke goes with her to save
everybody. They go to stone circle like Stonehenge where scroll fits
neatly into slot. Only Luke can put scroll in slot because he is
human. Vortex opens. Wormwood betrays Sontaran who gets pissed off
at her. Clyde gives him weapon. Sontaran charges at Wormwood and
they both fall into vortex which leads to Horath, who we never get to
see or meet. Horath may be some sort of computer entity. We might
yet see Horath if the demand is there. I would not count Wormwood and
Sontaran out of the running. I believe they will be back. I just
hope it is a much stronger story. Everybody lives happily ever
after. The UNIT Major is revealed to be a Bane in disguise who is
killed by a secret gun the Brigadier has in his cane. With the bad
major dead, the Brigadier can go back to his wife and freedom.
Everybody lives happily ever after. Huzzah!

The strongest story this season had to be "Secrets of the Stars" as it
dealt with a conflicted villain. Runner-up had to be "The Temptation
of Sarah Jane Smith" although the Trickster was gotten rid of way too
easy for my liking.

This was a piecemeal story that did not deserve to be green lit. I
would imagine we will see more of Wormwood and that Sontaran. What I
would like to see in the future for the show are Zygons, more K9 and
even Sarah meeting other past companions of the Doctor. Having a few
people pop in from Torchwood would be nice also.

Thanks for reading.

Kiss to Carr ... Jimmy Carr pulls a bemused face as John Barrowman kisses him
By KEELEY BOLGER

Published: 12 Dec 2008

JIMMY Carr got a shock smacker on the chops from John Barrowman last night.

The erudite comedian, who has been touring the
UK, was at the London Palladium for the Royal
Variety Performance which was filmed last night.

Jimmy was in the arena chatting to the Torchwood
actor when cheeky John put a protective arm
around him and planted a kiss on his face.

Maybe he spotted some mistletoe ...

Lucy Morgan: Making classical cool

Dec 12 2008 by Tim Lewis, Western Mail

She's worked with stars from Shirely Bassey to
David Essex, but viola player Lucy Morgan told
Tim Lewis all she really wants this Christmas is
to spend time with friends (even if they are Steve Balsamo and Catrin Finch)

IT'S almost easier to list some of the musicians
Lucy Morgan hasn't worked with, rather than the ones she has.

When the 31-year-old decided to launch her first
Christmas concert last year she had already
worked with Shirley Bassey, Keane and the Manic
Street Preachers, to name but a few.

After another year of jetting all over the world,
the viola player can now add the likes of David
Essex, Echo and the Bunnymen, John Barrowman and
the Last Shadow Puppets (the critically acclaimed
side project of Arctic Monkeys' frontman Alex Turner) to her impressive list.

"It's been quite a year," Lucy admits.

"I've been all over the world and worked with
some of the best people. Working with the Last
Shadow Puppets was really cool. Both Alex and
Miles (Kane, who's also lead singer of The Rascals) were really down to earth.

"I played on stage with them at the Leeds
Festival and then literally travelled through the

Barrowman to battle with giant robot at Hippodrome

John Barrowman and Titan at the Birmingham Hippodrome. (s)

Andrew Powell
11 December 2008

FOLLOWING his record-breaking season in last
year's pantomime, stage and TV star John
Barrowman returns to the Birmingham Hippodrome in
the Christmas spectacular Robin Hood - The
Pantomime Adventure from next Friday (December 19).

Appearing alongside him is comedian Paul Zerdin
as Will Scarlet, together with his friend 'Sam',
while returning to Birmingham is veteran
entertainer Don Maclean in the role of Friar Tuck.

Also making a special appearance is the the
impressive Titan, a huge eight-foot steel giant
of a robot that is conjured back from the future
to aide the Sheriff of Nottingham's quest to defeat Robin Hood (Barrowman).

John Barrowman said: "I am thrilled to be
returning to the Birmingham Hippodrome this
Christmas in a production full of surprises and
packed with entertainment for all ages.

"I am particularly looking forward to taking on
Titan - with my experience of battling futuristic
baddies, I don't think it'll prove too much of a problem!"

Robin Hood - The Pantomime Adventure is staged by
Qdos Pantomimes, the largest pantomime producer
in the world and is presented by the same team
that was behind the 2007/08 production of Aladdin.
It is a brand new production especially written
for Birmingham Hippodrome and performances run until Sunday, February 1, 2009.

Tickets are on sale priced £13-£30, available
online at www.birminghamhippodrome.com or by telephone on 0844 338 5000.

This is helpful group of people so I have decided to ask you all. Does anyone
know how/where to find the easter eggs on the Buffy complete series that comes
in a tin? Any suggestions would be helpful, off list of course, no point in
boring everyone else.

                                                        Thanks

"Torchwood: Children of Earth" details emerge
[]

by Brian Juergens

DigitalSpy snagged producer Peter Bennett and squeezed him until some
details about Torchwood Season 3 popped out, as well as a little
damage control about rumors that John Barrowman will be packing up
his Tardis and going home after this run.

Perhaps of more immediate interest to us, Torchwood Magazine sat down
with series director Euros Lyn (who directed all five eps of the arc)
and confirmed that the relationship between Jack (Barrowman) and
Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) won't be cut due to the shortened season
or backburnered because of the show's move to a higher-profile
timeslot and channel:

"Also, the love story between Captain Jack and Ianto continues to
unfold, as does the story of married life for Gwen and Rhys"

Speaking of Gareth David-Lloyd, the local fave also spoke with BBC
reporters recently about the new season, revealing that as a
full-fledged member of the TW team this go-round he gets to do a lot
more running and jumping. Action Ianto! My favorite kind.

We know we've got some serious Torchwoodies and Barrowmaniacs here,
as evidenced by the rankings in this year's Visibility Awards.

Sad to say I'm going to disagree with you on this one. But it was my least
favorite of the specials. It was way too predictable (I was able to figure out
every plot point MILES before The Doctor figured things out). I think I've just
watched too many RTD written scripts - I knew exactly where he was going to go
with everything. I was sorely disappointed.

I agree with you. While it was not like last year's, the Cyberman King
giant thingee was cool. Real sad about his ruminating on companions I
thought.

TORCHWOOD THIS WEEK
December 27, 2008 - Vol 2, No 51
The weekly guide to Torchwood transmissions.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho

Coming in 2009, the 5 episode 3rd series of Torchwood. Premiering
across one week on BBC One. A week that has not been decided on yet.

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho .

There will be major changes to This Week In Doctor Who starting with
the January 3, 2009 edition. I am still considering various tweaks,
but here is the tentative plan to make everything easier to use in
2009. I am trying a bit of branding and breaking down information to
simplify efforts to find what you want. Should be particularly useful
if you like to clip a bit to forward somewhere else (which does
happen). Take a look:

Column 1 - TWIDW: This Week In Doctor Who - the classic column. No
more Sarah Jane listings. Listings for North and South America
(essentially the Western Hemisphere) removed. Listings for stations
with rights to Doctor Who that aren't airing the show right now -
removed.

Column 2 - TWIDW: Western Hemisphere (title may change) - everything
Doctor Who from North and South America, inclduing almost all the PBS
listings. Listings for PBS stations that aren't airing the show right
now - removed.

Column 3 - TWIDW: The Sarah Jane Schedules (premiere) - The Sarah
Jane Adventures schedules all together and easy to read. Also - all
the podcasts. Also - the listings for Doctor Who stations not
currently airing the show that still have rights (all over the world,
including PBS). If the K9 series ever gets finished and reaches the
airwaves, it will be here. Essentially the catch-all column that can
morph into a proper Sarah Jane column as the show's influence spreads
around the globe.

Column 4 - TWIDW: Torchwood This Week - apart from adding the TWIDW
branding, this column stays the same.

Barrowman let slip a hint about the upcoming season.

"The next series is about Torchwood fighting the government rather than
just aliens and is a lot darker. Jack has to make a decision no parent -
that's a big hint - should have to make."

Ok, people, speculation time! Is he or isn't he?? And if he is, who is
it???

From what I gather, Russ T. is off so they are doing 4 longish episodes fro 2009
rather than a full season. This is I would guess to allow the new producer to
jump on board. This may, however only be for Dr. Who and Torchwood will have a
regular season - I am not sure as the BC site is unfortunately, pretty
innaccessible to non-UK viewers.
We should know for sure pretty soon though as I am certain, Sci Fi channel will
pick up and edit the (bleep) out of them for our American consumption when they
are available

Dr Who gets four specials... And a shortened season of Torchwood is being
shown five consecutive nights on BBC1 (possibly mid 2009 according to a tv
interview JB did).
Then 2010, both shows are supposed to be back to full runs.

5 hour long eps sometime this spring. In UK, sometime between Feb and June.

Hopefully here in the US sometime soon after. Wonder if they will show them 5
days straight or one day for five weeks?

Also, according to John Barrowman in a recent interview, they worked on keeping
it cleaner so American stations would be more willing to show it.

The current plan is 5 episodes over a weeks time to air sometime in the Spring.
Since BBC America is airing the show, they will be the ones editing the (bleep)
out of them.
