TORCHWOOD THIS WEEK
October 4, 2008 - Vol 2, No 39
The weekly guide to Torchwood transmissions.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho .

New Zealand - TVNZ's TV2 http://www.tvnz.co.nz is going straight into
Torchwood series 2 this Wednesday, having finished Series 1 last
Wednesday. Torchwood is still on in New Zealand.

Canada - SPACE http://www.spacecast.com is airing Torchwood in 65
minute timeslots. So make sure your recording device is scheduled to
record Torchwood for 1 hour, 5 minutes instead of 1 hour. If you are
in the Central and Mountain Time Zones and also plan to watch Doctor
Who Series 4 on the CBC, check your cable/satellite provider's
channel lineup to make sure you have other regions of CBC. In those 2
time zones the 65 minute Torchwood broadcast on SPACE will overlap
Doctor Who on CBC (9PM all time zones), and neither show has a repeat
slot. Satellite customers should be fine and it is believed that most
digital cable subscribers have multiple CBCs too, but the time to
check your lineup is now, as opposed to the 19th of September. The
conflict ends on 24 October when the series 2 finale airs.

SCANDANAVIA - the BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice
announced Wednesday that Scandanavia will see the launch of a new set
of BBC channels in December. BBC Entertainment Scandanavia will
replace BBC Prime in the country and will likely air Doctor Who and
Torchwood. BBC HD will also launch in Scandanavia and could also air
Torchwood. The BBC will launch the new suite of channels and retire
BBC Prime in all of the Nordic countries - it is not clear if this
will happen simultaneously or if it will be just one Nordic country
at a time. Each country is supposed to get their own version of these
channels. BBC Prime continues for now in other countries, though the
eventual plan is to replace it altogether will lots of localized BBC
channels.

The point of this Grouply thing is so the person or persons at the other end
can infect the PCs of every Yahoo member on this lists of the person who's

This Grouply is supposed to be really bad. It looks like a cool new
networking site, and may well be. However it asks people who join for their
Yahoo
password and then all sorts of bad things can happen. Plus, it does harvest
emails and send invites out.

I've seen warnings about it for months on at least a dozen lists now.

Can I tell readers about an online dog show that is being held by
Friends of the Animals, an independant rescue run by volunteers?

The competition runs until tomorrow and will be judged by Shauna
Lowry and Dr Who and Torchwood star John Barrowman.

Categories include names such as Soggy Doggy, Bottoms Up, Most
Handsome, Best Action and Best Rescue.

All money raised will go towards an operation for Buster the
Labrador, who was handed in at 10 months old with OCD, a painful,
hereditary condition.

Entry costs pounds1 and there are prizes and rosettes. For details on
how to enter your dog, visit

COME October, it's going to prove almost impossible to walk around
Cheltenham without bumping into a literary luminary, sporting hero,
star of the screen (both big and small) or even a roving minstrel or two.

From Friday, October 10, to Sunday, October 19, the town will play
host to more than 450 writers more than 350 events at the annual
Cheltenham Literature Festival. There will be appearances from
Hollywood legends Roger Moore and Tony Curtis; household names such
as Richard Attenborough, Dawn French and Jilly Cooper; Booker
Prize-winning authors including John Banville, Graham Swift and
Penelope Lively; and even a visit from two of the Time Lord's
cohorts, writer Russell T. Davies and actor John Barrowman, who will
both be stopping by to share tales from their Doctor Who adventures.

This year's guest directors, Kate Adie and crime writer Ian Rankin,
have each been given a series of talks to co-ordinate on the themes
of censorship and political correctness. But the general topic this
year will be the family in all its many shapes and guises. From
dynasties that shaped the world (including David Starkey on Henry
VIII and Helen Rappaport on the Romanovs), to Richard Madeley
debating the roles of fathers, and novelists such as Fay Weldon and
Linda Grant exploring the myriad ways that families are portrayed in novels.

Meanwhile, Cheltenham is also an ideal destination for even the
youngest of bookworms. Book It! is a festival within the festival,
with more than 100 events aimed at families and young readers. Here,
you'll be able to meet Jacqueline Wilson, Eoin Colfer, Darcey Bussell
and Shirley Hughes, while comedian Harry Hill will be showcasing some
of his favourite jokes.

TO BOOK, call the box office on 0844 576 7979. BBC Radio 4 will be
recording and broadcasting a range of events over the ten days..

Usually I don't post but something happened today that I thought I'd
mention since there are fans of both TORCHWOOD and WHO and the spin-off
series. Season 1 of THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES was released today and
like anybody who wants to acquire them, I checked both Fry's
and...gag...Best Buy to see which had the better price (Best Buy has it
available for $29.99, bythe way). At both stores, I discovered that
while the sets were sealed, wrapped, etc., the front two discs were
rattling around loose. Fry's had 8 sets...all of them with loose
discs...three of the sets were opened to check...the loose discs were
scratched or scuffed pretty bad. Best Buy supposedly had 8 but only two
were aorund...they also had the same problem. The set I was going to by
I had them open when I heard rattling...the condition of the 4th disc,
which was off of the "post" (my term for it) was really messed up.

Both stores are sending their stock back to the distributor and getting
replacements. I am wondering if this is the same at other places
carrying the first season of the show. And if so, what is with Warners?

Just thought I would mention this to our august group of merry marauders.

Thanks for the use of the hall.

Thanks so much for those. It could be a show about buttering toast and I'd still
watch it if Barrowman hosted.

What an odd phenomenon! I don't know how discs are put into cases, but I've
always
assumed they must be put in by hand and that, on the odd occasion this happens,
some
factory drone just didn't push hard enough :p Never seen every copy of a release
have the
same problem though. One duff worker's box supplied that store, maybe?

Anyway, from my experience, I expect the discs would actually play fine. I've
had a number
of DVDs arrive with the actual discs loose over the years, and I can't recall a
single
instance where this has left them so badly damaged that they have to be
returned. It's
sometimes hard to tell the difference between surface damage and genuine damage
(I've
had discs that look fine bar one minor scratch/blob/whatever but won't play at
all, while
others appear to be covered in marks but play faultlessly), but it can take some
effort (or
some sustained lack of care -- rental discs, I'm looking at you) to render a
disc completely
useless.

I had the same problem with Smallville a few years ago. My husband ordered
it from Walmart.com and when it came in the mail it rattled. I took it back
and got another off the shelf and when I got it home the same thing. I went
back yet again and we got all the ones on the shelf and I opened every
package until I had one set that was not scratched up. I think that usually
happens with those boxed sets. I have gotten other series (STTNG, DS9 and
original series) and have not had any trouble. I wonder if the problem
starts in the packing process or the packing material they use. When we got
Star Trek the original series the actual DVD holders were the same size as a
standard cd case it just had several "pages" for each dvd so not much room
to rattle around and be scratched.

TORCHWOOD THIS WEEK
October 11, 2008 - Vol 2, No 40
The weekly guide to Torchwood transmissions.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/torchwood
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho .

I can't believe no one from the group went to the TW convention! I've
been checking for feedback, but, since there doesn't seem to be any,
thought I'd better post something myself.
This was an incredible experience. It was my first convention ever and
I was bowled over by it, the way everyone behaved so wonderfully
(attendees and guests), all hanging out together, it was amazing!. I
came home a happy bunny, clutching my autographs and memorabilia, with
memories of 'encounters', though not of the 'intimate' variety that was
up for the highest bidders! (£500 plus to sit next to Gareth for a
Chinese meal?!--way out of my league.)
Among the many insights and discoveries the weekend gave me, I was
struck by what a wicked sense of humour Gareth has; now I know how
Ianto cracks his one-liners with such panache. Gareth's impression of
John (after JB had left!) was hysterical, offering his take on John:
loud, GAY and outrageously extrovert. Anyway, perhaps others might post
their experiences?
Best,
Carole

I did go, I had a great time. I'm not big on posting about cons. I feel that if
people wanted to know they should've gone. However, if people have specific
questions I do answer them. I went to 3 intimate encounters. One with Gareth (it
was 45 pounds) one with Naoko (it was 35 pounds) and one with Kai (it was 25
pounds). The private dinner went for 500- the intimate encounters never even
touched 100.

Oh man... I so wish I could have been there. I just watched the whole
thing on Youtube and I couldn't stop laughing.

Wow... John really has 'corrupted' his fellow actors.

They were all brilliant and even a couple of spoilers.

*grins* I wonder what it would take to get a convention happening in
Australia?

*hugs*

Some of us have a wee bit of a problem with paying for air fare just to go
to a con. :(

If I'd paid more attention, I should have gone to Dragon Con. That was
only a 10 hour drive. And the crowds. I wonder how con organizers feel
about people who show up in or with gas masks? (perfume allergies make
crowds really, really hard to deal with.) Movie theaters look at me really
stangely, but so far have let me in when carrying one. Haven't tried
wearing one in. Hmmm.

convention in your own country is an expensive business; going to one
in another country is outrageously expensive and I suspect there are
very few millionaires in fandom.

Someone who attended the event saw that they were filming and asked the
organizers if they were planning to release a DVD and they said that they would
if fans showed enough interest. The guy/girl started a petition and so far it's
been signed by 265 fans. Of course that is nowhere near enough, so anyone who

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion...I've always thought the best
thing about cons is meeting other fans and sharing stories afterward to
encourage other people to go and support the actors/shows.

Be well,

Here! Here! I agree whole-heartedly with Katie. I'm half way across
the world, but after watching (several times)I really enjoyed the
atmosphere as if I was in the room too.

Meeting the people who are like minded is more than half the fun and
after my adventures in Cardiff, I can totally identify.

Experiences like that create sharing and bonding, as well as
friendships that can last a lifetime.

intent wasn't to upset anyone.

*Sigh* Still asking? What would it take to get a convention in Aus?

Same as it would anywhere -- either 1) a professional convention running company
who thinks TW would be profitable for them or 2) an incredibly dedicated group
of fans willing to risk their life savings and work their asses off for 9-12
months.

We now know, judging from pics from the Hub Con posted on
AfterElton.com,that Gareth David-Lloyd wears boxer briefs and that Kai
Owen is a briefs man.

Did John Barrowman, given that he loves to show his bits on the TW set
whenever the need arises, even answer the question as openly as Gareth
(who truly has a beautiful bum)and Kai did by dropping trou?
