TORCHWOOD THIS WEEK

TV4 in Sweden is premiering Torchwood on the 24th of June with 2
episodes. Start time not yet verified.

BBC America http://www.bbcamerica.com ran trailers in their Doctor
Who marathon Monday showing that Torchwood will premiere Saturday
September 8 at 8PM Eastern. BBC America has no West Coast feed, so
people on the US West Coast - the Torchwood premiere is 5PM Pacific.
BBC America's recent schedule overhaul means that they run primetime
twice - 8 to 11PM Eastern and 8PM to 11PM Pacific (11PM to 2AM
Eastern). There has been no evidence so far that BBC America's move
to run primetime earlier will result in any change of content -
Torchwood will probably appear pretty close to the UK version, minus
a particular profanity and edits for time.

CBC has announced that Torchwood is part of their fall lineup. Some
newspapers are saying it will air Fridays at 9PM. Premiere date TBA.

Australian Network Ten http://www.ten.com.au has a Torchwood website
now and is running ads for the premiere. A press embargo will end on
Monday, so Australian media will probably announce a premiere date
then. The South Australian Doctor Who Fan Group
http://www.sfsa.org.au and Outpost Gallifrey
http://www.gallifreyone.com should have the most accurate information
when it becomes available.

Doctor Who schedule information is in This Week In Doctor Who

Time travel star's bumpy ride to city

Jun 6 2007

By Diane Parkes, Birmingham Mail

din.jpg>
[]

HE may be a time traveller in Dr Who, but jet
travel didn't suit John Barrowman as he headed
for Birmingham Hippodrome to launch this year's Christmas pantomime.

John, who is best know as the time-travelling
conman Capt Jack Harkness in both Dr Who and
Torchwood series, joined forces with other cast
members including Banzai's Masashi Fujimoto and The Grumbleweeds yesterday.

But John, who will take the lead role of Aladdin
in the panto, held up the launch by an hour
because he was feeling poorly after a supersonic flight.

"I am so sorry to be late," he said. "I was
flying in a Hawker fighter jet to launch the RAF
Tattoo and we were doing 360¼ turns and loop the loop.

"With the G-force it really hit me. When I got
into the car afterwards I felt so sick I just collapsed flat."

And John confessed the event, flying from
Boscombe Down in Wiltshire to RAF Fairford in
Gloucestershire and taking in most of the UK en
route had also seen a reunion with Connie Fisher,
winner of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? which John helped judge.

"She told them she didn't want to be sick so her
plane was just flat," he said. "We kept looping
round her to wave at her. But it was a great
experience and I think I have seen the whole of England, upside down."

Also taking roles in the panto are Birmingham's
Don Maclean as Widow Twankey, Lily McConigley as
Princess Yasmin, Peter Gallagher as Abanazar and the Daleks from Doctor Who.

Tickets for the event went on sale before
Christmas and sales figures are already well
ahead of last year without the cast even being announced.

Theatre chief executive Stuart Griffiths said
signing up Barrowman, who is currently filming a
second series of the Dr Who spin-off Torchwood
and judging television's hunt for Joseph in Any Dream Will Do, was a real coup.

"We are delighted that John, one of today's
biggest stars from stage and television, will be
heading the cast in what will be the theatre's
50th year of pantomime," he said.

Aladdin plays Birmingham Hippodrome from December
19-January 27, contact 0870 730 1234 or see

Connie launches air show

Jun 6 2007

by Gareth Morgan, Western Mail

SHE’S more used to a nun’s habit and him a more
old-fashioned military overcoat when appearing for their fans.

But yesterday Welsh musical star Connie Fisher
and Torchwood actor John Barrowman donned the green jumpsuits of RAF aircrew.

They appeared at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire
to launch this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo.

The pair enjoyed a low-level flight in two RAF
Hawk jets from Boscombe Down in Wiltshire before
landing at the US Air Force Base.

The Royal International Air Tattoo is the world’s
largest military air show and is held in support
of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.

Captain Jack flies in

Connie Fisher and Jon Barrowman at the air tattoo launch

HE helped Doctor Who battle Earth-destroying aliens.

But John Barrowman, aka Captain Jack from Torchwood, had to battle nerves
and a churning stomach as he flew low-level in the back of an RAF jet
before kicking off the countdown to this year's Royal International Air Tattoo.

Jumping down from the back seat of the Hawk trainer at RAF Fairford
yesterday, he adopted a sunglasses-clad, Top Gun-like pose and said: "I
have helped to fly the Tardis, but this was much more exciting."

Barrowman was helping to launch the show because of his dual British and
American nationality, which will be one of the key themes of the air tattoo
when it celebrates the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force.

"Americans have got a lot of flak in recent years," he said.

"But we shouldn't forget that men and women from both countries are working
hard to ensure that we enjoy the freedoms that we have, and that is one of
the great things about the tattoo."

His wingman, or woman in the second Hawk, was Sound of Music star Connie
Fisher who won the BBC talent contest How Do You Solve A Problem Like
Maria? Yet although her voice won over the audiences on the TV show, she
was unable to drown out the tones of Typhoon jet fighters sat nearby.

"This was an amazing experience," said the 23-year-old.

"I never watched the flight safety video the night I was supposed to.

"I never realised what a Hawk looked like. I think I was expecting an
easyJet or something."

With just five weeks before the first aircraft arrive at Fairford for the
show on July 14 and 15, air tattoo teams are getting ready to start
building the show infrastructure, and show director Tim Prince admits he's
excited.

He said: "Like last year, the show is smaller than those in the 1990s but
we are concentrating on quality rather than quantity.

"This year, so many countries want to contribute to the flying that we are
over-subscribed, and it's a challenge to keep everyone happy, but that's
why volunteers and visitors come back year after year.

"There are so many things happening this year, but it's the Thunderbirds
which will prove to be one of the main attractions, as their act has a
certain razzamatazz that everyone will appreciate."

And that was a view shared by the American base commander, Col Paul
Wuebold, who no doubt faces his fair share of stress in next few weeks, as
his base becomes the focus for Europe's only airshow to celebrate the US
Air Force anniversary.

"This will be my third and last air tattoo, and for me to be helping to
celebrate such an important anniversary is a real privilege," he said.

BARROWMAN PANTOMINES ALADDIN

Unless you're English, that headline probably makes no sense, but basically
it means Torchwood's John Barrowman is the busiest man in England. And, as
this picture attests, the most colorfully dressed since Elton John.

Turns out John is not only starring in Torchwood, dropping in on Doctor
Who, crushing dreams judging on Andrew Lloyd Webber's Any Dream Will Do
(which concludes on Saturday night), but he's also signed on as the star of
Aladdin in something called a Christmas pantomime. This is a colorful,
theatrical event that is a holiday tradition for many families with kids.
Think of it as the U.K.'s version of The Nutcracker only with an openly gay
man in the lead role.

As if this wasn't already enough for one man, Barrowman is also appearing
at the Eridge Summer Fair on Sunday June 24th, then on Saturday June 30th
he'll take the stage at Trafalgar Square for London Pride.

JOHN BARROWMAN TO STAR IN PANTOMIME, ALADDIN At the exciting pantomime
launch yesterday, it was revealed that star of TV's Dr Who, Torchwood and
Any Dream Will Do, John Barrowman will star in the 2007/8 pantomime at
Birmingham Hippodrome, Aladdin. He will star in the lead role next to
Birmingham's own Don Maclean as Widow Twankey, Maashi Fujimoto from Banzai
as the emperor and the beautiful Lila McConigley as Princess Yasmin. The
panto also sees the Grumbleweeds making a Midlands comeback as the Chinese
Policeman!

like Torchwood is airing on any of the other affiliates that run

TEN is airing Torchwood in a 70 minute timeslot. While this means
more commercials, it also means the episodes should not be shortened
for time! Torchwood episodes range from 46 minutes, 45 seconds to 52

While not Torchwood, UK readers will want to pay attention to Doctor

Personally, I loved it.

Now, since I've only ever seen the Master in the Paul McGann movie, I really
couldn't have cared
less about his return, but I liked the way it was done and I loved John Simm's
portrayal of the
Master as a sort of brattier, more manic version of the Doctor. Particualrly
loved the "Say my
name," and "End of the Universe! Have fun! Bye-bye!"

That was great.

But of course what really excited me was The Return of Jack and I loved it all.
The edgy
relationship between him and the Doctor - the way the Doctor wouldn't look at
him or walk beside
him at first - and the culmination of it all in the radiation scene.

Loved the way Jack flirted with just about everyone he could find. Was he doing
it just to annoy
the Doctor? If so, it worked!

And in the "Shame on you" line I thought I saw a role reversal from "The Doctor
Dances", where
Jack had done something foolish, and the Doctor set him straight with a kind of
understanding and
wisdom and forgiveness. And here Jack can return the facour.

Loved all the dialogue between Jack and Martha, especially the parts about Rose.
It was nice to
see Jack learn the truth about Rose, too.

I listed the things I liked best:

1. The Doctor: "They're not my responsibility." Jack: "And I am? That's a
change."

2. Each time Jack flirts with someone and each time the Doctor objects.

3. The Doctor's flinch when he first sees Jack and says, "I'm sorry."

4. Jack taking the Doctor's coat and holding it the same way Ianto takes his
coat.

5. The scene where Jack grabs the Doctor to stop him from falling into the shaft
and says, "How'd
you cope without me?"

6. Martha: "Oh, she was blonde!"

7. Derek Jacobi's acting.

8. Chantho. What a great character, and what a great look.

9. The watch ... revisited.

10. Hermits.

11. "The final act of the Time War was life."

12. "Shame on you."

namaste,
Elizabeth

I agree with all of your comments. The only thing I didn't like was the
lack of continuity between this episode and the final episode of Torchwood.
In Torchwood the viewer is clearly given the impression that the TARDIS
has materializing inside The Hub.
Apparently this is not the case.

Personally, I loved it.

Now, since I've only ever seen the Master in the Paul McGann movie, I really
couldn't have cared
less about his return, but I liked the way it was done and I loved John Simm
s portrayal of the
Master as a sort of brattier, more manic version of the Doctor. Particualrly
loved the "Say my
name," and "End of the Universe! Have fun! Bye-bye!"

That was great.

But of course what really excited me was The Return of Jack and I loved it
all. The edgy
relationship between him and the Doctor - the way the Doctor wouldn't look
at him or walk beside
him at first - and the culmination of it all in the radiation scene.

Loved the way Jack flirted with just about everyone he could find. Was he
doing it just to annoy
the Doctor? If so, it worked!

And in the "Shame on you" line I thought I saw a role reversal from "The
Doctor Dances", where
Jack had done something foolish, and the Doctor set him straight with a kind
of understanding and
wisdom and forgiveness. And here Jack can return the facour.

Loved all the dialogue between Jack and Martha, especially the parts about
Rose.

4. Jack taking the Doctor's coat and holding it the same way Ianto takes his
coat.

5. The scene where Jack grabs the Doctor to stop him from falling into the
shaft and says, "How'd
you cope without me?"

6. Martha: "Oh, she was blonde!"

7. Derek Jacobi's acting.

8. Chantho. What a great character, and what a great look.

9. The watch ... revisited.

10. Hermits.

11. "The final act of the Time War was life."

12. "Shame on you."

namaste,
Elizabeth

No, it wasn't. I didn't mind the misdirection, though - for one thing, it gave
me that wonderful,
wonderful mental image of the TARDIS planted among the screens and desks and
found in the Hub.
Even if I have to discard it as a fantasy in the end, the idea was fun while it
lasted.

It also gave me the misconception at the time that the Doctor had actually come
back for Jack,
which in fact nothing could be further from the truth. I can't say this was a
disappointment, but
it was a surprise. I really enjoyed the way there was tension between them, the
way Jack didn't
let the Doctor off the hook, and the way the Docter showed a painful mixture of
certainty,
distress and regret.

I loved the moment where Jack held the Doctor's coat, the way Ianto does for
him.

Elizabeth

Loved it!
Derek was incredible, especially the switch near the
end. So much in his changing of character just in the
eyes! It would have been nice to have him play the
Master into another episode before regenerating. Great
to have John back on DOCTOR WHO (and in the opening
titles). The explaination in the radiation room
satisfied the questions I had about why the Doctor was
so eager to leave Jack behind at the beginning of the
episode. They also answered some of the questions
raised on TORCHWOOD concerning how long Jack had been
waiting for the Doctor to return to Cardiff.

My only complaint was the use of the "watch", AGAIN.
It was a great idea and I loved how it was used with
the Doctor in 'Human Nature'/'Family of Blood', but to
use it again (and so soon) just felt to me like they
ran out of original ideas.

Louis

I wouldn't call it misdirection. Micky and Rose's mother could hear the
TARDIS engines from blocks away, Why not Jack?

I thought it was real good & can't wait to see the next 2 parts.
I found the anticipation of Jack's return worked well in many ways.
The Master's return I'm all for as he's a great character regardless.

As allways....

One thing that is very obvious is the difference in Jack's personality when
he's on Who as opposed to Torchwood. On Who Jack is very much the rogue
and free spirit. On Torchwood Jack becomes a serious non nonsense leader.

I noticed that to, but I tended to ignore it so as not let it dull my enjoyment

But I do like the way Jack is on Torchwood better.

I like him in both shows. Yes, he's different, but I think it's enough explained
by context and
theme in the show. In Torchwood he has reason to be more serious.

Yes, and wasn't the TARDIS right on top of the Hub? The Doctor parked where he
always does,
didn't he - on top of the invisible lift? So Jack was right underneath, but had
to run out
through the door on the other side of the plaza because the lift was blocked by
the TARDIS.

Jack must have gone through a never-shown/seen third door. One they
just never bothered to try to open in the two episodes they are locked
in the Hub

Immediately? Well, maybe.

In any case, there are other entrances to the Hub that we haven't seen. (They
are mentioned more
explicitly in the books.)

Presumably those doors locked too, or the passageways to them did.

Agreed, howevr what I would like to see is AT LEAST something akin to what
they did with Sarah Jane Smith/K9. What I mean is AT LEAST let it slip some hint

Well from watching the Confidential episodes the production team appear to
consider the Who movie part of the offcial cannon. I know mnay fans
dismiss the film but, since it does have Sylvester McCoy's Doctor in it,
it's kind of hard to dismiss it. With that said, at the end of the film
The Master was again reduced to that of a non physical being. I too would
like to know what happened to him between the end of the classic series up
to now. RTD has brought the character this far so it would be ashame to
leave plot gaps about the character now.

I haven't read the books, and don't consider books canon (but that's
neither here nor there) but it just seems silly that they struggle and
fret over getting the main door to open when there is apparently other
exits they could have tried.
