a writing seminar/ talk on Friday at 4, and my spotlight is at 4 on
Saturday. More things may be added along the way but those are the
key events.
Information about WONDERCON can be found on the Convention Calendar
below.
DISCUSSION TOPIC:
Remakes of classics seem to be the rage. Do you think taking classics
like "The Day The Earth Stood Still", "The Birds", "War of the
Worlds", etc. and updating them is good? Do any of the remakes stand
up to the originals?
Send in your thoughts and comments to sgbruckner@.... I will post
them on the Discussion Page for everyone to share and enjoy. There
are some good ones so far. Add yours! If you see an old topic you
want to respond to, go right ahead. We enjoy hearing from you.
KEEPING UP WITH CAST AND CREW
Ranger Anne sent along this update on a number of cast members:
ROBIN ATKIN DOWNES:
I understand that Robin Atkin Downes is the narrator of the current
comedy film "Meet the Spartans," a spoof of "300." The cast includes
Sean Maguire (Leonidas), Kevin Sorbo (the Captain), Carmen Electra
(Queen Margo) and lots of celebrity lookalikes.
BRUCE BOXLEITNER/WALTER KOENIG
Bruce Boxleitner & Walter Koenig are appearing in the SciFi Channel's
upcoming TV movie "The Bone Eater," set to air next Saturday (2/9) at
9pm ET. The network's webpage for it doesn't seem to have a lot of
info about the plot. The page is: http://www.scifi.com/boneeater
It would be Bruce's third SciFi original telefilm, after "Snakehead
Terror" & "They Are Among Us."
DYLAN NEAL
Dylan Neal was in last night's episode of Stargate
Atlantis, "Outcast." He plays John Sheppard's brother David.

NEWS AROUND THE WORLD OF SCIENCE FICTION:
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
For all of you non-football fans, you may want to take in the Star
Trek Enterprise marathon today on SciFi. It starts early in the
morning and runs throughout the day. I have posted the 8-10:00pm
schedule in the TV section to give you an idea of where they are in
airing the series.
WRITER'S STRIKE
There are reports hitting the various wire services that the writer's
strike (WGA) may be coming to a close. While there are no official
reports, it looks like there has been some sort of breakthrough in
contract talks that could lead to a tentative deal as early as next
week. This is music to everyone's ears. I certainly hope that a fair
agreement can be reached so that writers can get back to work --
bringing along all of the production elements with them.
HUMBOLDT PARK
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the ensemble cast for the upcoming
family comedy HUMBOLDT PARK has just gotten bigger. Alfred Molina,
Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz, Luis Guzman, Vanessa Ferlito and
Mercedes Ruehl have all joined the cast. Alfredo de Villa is
directing from a script by Rick Najera, Alison Swan and Ted Perkins-
Lopez that revolves around a family reunion during the holidays in
the Chicago neighborhood of Humboldt Park. John Leguizamo and Freddy
Rodriguez have already signed on as two brothers in the famliy.
Molina will play the family patriarch who owns a bodega, Hernandez
will play a family friend who works at the bodega, Diaz is a former
lover of Hernandez's character, Ferlito plays the daughter and friend
to Diaz's character and Ruehl will play the mother. Principal
photography is set to commence on February 13 in Chicago.
BILLIONAIRE'S VINEGAR
According to Variety, Escape Artists and Overbrook Entertainment have
optioned the screen rights to Benjamin Wallace's novel, THE
BILLIONAIRE'S VINEGAR: THE MYSTERY OF THE WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE
BOTTLE OF WINE. I AM LEGEND actor Will Smith will produce the film
alongside Todd Black, James Lassiter, Jason Blumenthal and Steve
Tisch. THE BILLIONAIRE'S VINEGAR is a story about the scandal that
ensued when an auctioned cache of wine bottles purported to have been
owned by Thomas Jefferson were called fakes. Escape Artists and
Overbrook have announced first-look deals with Columbia. No word when
production for The Billionaire's Vinegar will start.
MOVIE CLIPS
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN
Over at IESB.net, you can see a number of Super Bowl clips made
available by studios. This year, Walt Disney Pictures and Universal
Studios are giving fans an early online peek at the Super Bowl spots
for two of their highly-anticipated films.
First up is Disney's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, which
hits theaters on May 16 and is again directed by Andrew Adamson.
WANTED
Universal Pictures has also brought online the Super Bowl spot for
graphic novel adaptation WANTED, with James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie
and Morgan Freeman.
You can already see this clip over at IESB.net.
VANTAGE POINT
Also at IESB.net, you will be able to view six new film clips and two
TV spots from VANTAGE POINT starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox,
Sigourney Weaver, Forest Whitaker and William Hurt. In Columbia
Pictures' action-packed thriller "Vantage Point," eight strangers
with eight different points of view try to unlock the one truth
behind an assassination attempt on the president of the United
States. Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) and Kent Taylor (Mathew Fox) are
two Secret Service agents assigned to protect President Ashton
(William Hurt) at a landmark summit on the global war on terror. When
President Ashton is shot moments after his arrival in Spain, chaos
ensues and disparate lives collide in the hunt for the assassin. In
the crowd is Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker), an American tourist who
thinks hes captured the shooter on his camcorder while videotaping
the event for his kids back home. Also there, relaying the historic
event to millions of TV viewers across the globe, is American TV news
producer Rex Brooks (Sigourney Weaver). As they and others reveal
their stories, the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place and
it will become apparent that shocking motivations lurk just beneath
the surface.
RANGER'S APPRENTICE
According to the Hollywood Reporter, two-time Oscar winner Paul
Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash) has just signed a nonexclusive
deal with United Artists, which will give him an opportunity to
produce, write and direct at least two features a year through his
new production company Hwy61. United Artists took on the rights to
the RANGER'S APPRENTICE fantasy series and this latest deal with
Haggis has him writing the screenplay alongside his daughter and
possibly directing. The team will also get to work adapting the
Joseph Weisberg novel AN ORDINARY SPY, though the trade doesn't say
whether he will do anything but produce it through his Hwy61 shingle.
RANGER PLOT CONCEPT:
Australian author John Flanagan's first book in the "Ranger" fantasy
series, "The Ruins of Gorlan," was released in Australia in November
2004 and seven months later in the United States. It follows the
adventures of an orphan named Will who becomes an apprentice ranger
and fights to keep the mythical kingdom of Araluen safe from
invaders, traitors and other dangers with the help of his master
Halt. Seven books have been released to date.
GREATEST AMERICAN HERO
Back in the 80s, one of my favorite shows was THE GREATEST AMERICAN
HERO. William Katt portrayed a hapless school teacher who is given
a "power suit" by aliens. When he has the suit on, he has super
powers -- but he lost the instruction book. So he goes about trying
to figure out how to use his powers to fight injustice.
Well according to Moviehole.com, a casting call has already gone out
around Hollywood alerting would-be tights-wearers that they're
looking for a new Ralph Hinkley. Already locked into the project is
Stephen Herek, probably best known for directing Bill & Ted's
Excellent Adventure, The Mighty Ducks, and Mr. Holland's Opus .
They're looking for a major name for the project, someone between
ages 29 and 39, which leaves the door pretty wide open. I sure hope
it gets off the ground. The old series was a lot of fun.
SANCTUARY
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the SCI FI Channel has
greenlighted a TV series based on the Web series SANCTUARY. The show
will be the first to use live-action actors against virtual sets in
the style of the features 300 and SIN CITY. SCI FI has ordered a full
13-episode season of the new scripted drama series, which originated
online as the first high-definition SF Web series. SANCTUARY is a
side project from the STARGATE SG-1 trio of star Amanda Tapping,
writer-producer Damian Kindler and producer-director Martin Wood.
They are executive producing the series with Sam Egan. Kindler
created Sanctuary, Wood directed the webisodes starring Tapping.
Tapping plays the enigmatic Dr. Helen Magnus, who is on a quest with
her young protege, Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), to track down, aid
and protect strange creatures that walk the earth. Tapping, Kindler
and Wood discussed Sanctuary with the network even before it launched
as a Web series. Talks shifted into high gear when the trio came back
with a DVD containing two one-hour blocks of webisodes. "We were
blown away by the level of quality they have been able to achieve on
a Web budget," SCI FI executive vice president of original
programming Mark Stern said. "We loved the world they'd created, and
we particularly loved their approach, since we had been looking for a
way to apply the virtual-set CGI environment from films like 300 and
Sin City to a television series." SANCTUARY, which features 90
percent CGI sets, will be retooled for its transition to television.
A new two-hour premiere episode will be produced for the network,
with expanded roles for some of the characters, although the cast
will remain intact. Much of the CGI footage from the Web series will
be enhanced incorporated into the show. SANCTUARY will be produced by
Stage 3 Media in association with SCI FI Channel. Filming is slated
to begin in March.
FRINGE
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Australian actress Anna Torv has
been tapped to play the lead role in FRINGE, Fox's upcoming SF drama
from J.J. Abrams and fellow Alias producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto
Orci. Veteran TV and stage actress Blair Brown and Jasika Nicole have
also joined the cast. Torv has been cast as Olivia Warren, a young,
tough FBI agent who is forced to confront the spread of unexplained
phenomena and work with Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), an
institutionalized scientist whose work might be at the center of a
coming storm. Brown will play the brilliant Nina Cord, a 16-year
veteran at Prometheus Corp., a cutting-edge research facility. Nicole
will play the recurring role of Astrid, a stunning federal assistant.
Lance Reddick and Kirk Acevedo also star. The two-hour pilot is being
directed by Alex Graves. In her native Australia, Torv has co-starred
on such TV series as The Secret Life of Us and Young Lions. Tony
winner Brown is probably best known for her Emmy-nominated role on
The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd. Nicole co-starred last year on
NBC's pilot THE MASTERSONS OF MANHATTAN.
IRON MAN AND SHOWEST
IRON MAN star Robert Downey Jr. will be honored as male star of the
year at ShoWest 2008. Downey will be feted at a March 13 awards gala
set to close the exhibition confab. ShoWest begins March 10 at the
Paris and Bally's hotels in Las Vegas. "For almost four decades,
Robert Downey Jr. has been entertaining moviegoers with a resume of
films that is as diverse and impressive as anyone could imagine,"
ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said. IRON MAN bows May
2 from Paramount, in cooperation with Marvel Entertainment. Downey
next appears in DreamWorks' "Tropic Thunder," an action comedy
unspooling Feb. 22. He also will appear in DreamWorks' "The Soloist."
STAR TREK NEWS
As production continues on the new J.J. Abrams STAR TREK film, news
is coming out about more new cast members. Jimmy Bennett has been
cast to play a younger version of Chris Pine's James T. Kirk in the
film. Coming Soon reports the young actor, who turns 12 on Feb. 9,
has already established a respectable filmography, including Hostage,
The Amityville Horror, Firewall, Poseidon and Evan Almighty.
According to TrekMovie.com, 15-year-old Spencer Daniels (The Curious
Case of Benjamin Button) has been cast in the role of Kirk's older
brother, George Jr. The site reported that the boys will have a scene
together, but not with their parents (played by Chris Hemsworth and
Jennifer Morrison). The character of George Kirk Jr. was referenced
in the original Star Trek series in the episodes "What are Little
Girls Made Of?" and "Operation: Annihilate!" STAR TREK is set for
release on Christmas Day.
THE WOLF MAN
Variety reports that Mark Romanek, who was set to direct Universal's
upcoming remake of the classic monster movie THE WOLF MAN, has left
the project. Romanek (One Hour Photo) took issue with the studio's
constraints on the film's schedule and budget, despite having $100
million to work with (the film will only cost $85 million due to tax
breaks for shooting in the U.K.). Variety also cited "other creative
issues" as further reason for his departure. The new version of WOLF
MAN, written by Andrew Kevin Walker (Sleepy Hollow), is tentatively
scheduled to begin production in March for release in 2009. Benicio
Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt are attached to star. The
Hollywood Reporter indicates that the studio is looking at several
helmer contenders and is intent on starting production in March. One
complication is that no changes can be made to the script because of
the writers strike. Any director coming on board will have to work
from the screenplay Romanek developed with Andrew Kevin Walker and
others and won't be able to put his or her stamp on it.
MINUTEMEN
The Disney Channel original two-hour movie MINUTEMEN drew an audience
of 6.5 million viewers on Jan. 25, enough to beat every other cable
network in total viewers for the night, Variety reported. The youth-
oriented time-travel adventure, about students who use a time machine
to prevent social mishaps, helped the Disney Channel earn the largest
audience in prime-time and for the total day. MINUTEMEN averaged 2.9
million among kids 6 to 11, triple digits higher than second-place
Nickelodeon, at 700,000. It also averaged 2.6 million in kids 9 to
14, also triple digits higher than Nickelodeon's 448,000. The movie
stars Jason Dolley, best known for playing Newt Livingston in the
Disney Channel's successful Cory in the House series. MINUTEMEN will
be rebroadcast on Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
For more information about the movie, go to
http://tv.disney.go.com/disneychannel/originalmovies/minutemen/.
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
According to Variety, Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad
Fuller and Andrew Form are set to relaunch the NIGHTMARE ON ELM
STREET franchise for New Line. The series, which began in 1984 with
Wes Craven's first NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET film, centers on the
iconic, striped-sweater clad killer known as Freddy Krueger, who
haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.
Originally played by Robert Englund, Freddy went on to appear in nine
films and two TV series in what was New Line's most lucrative
franchise until THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The project is not the first
horror series revival for the trio of producers, who are currently
preparing to begin shooting new Friday the 13th film in May. That
film, from a script by Freddy vs. Jason screenwriters Damian Shannon
and Mark Swift, will be directed by Marcus Nispel. Nispel previously
worked with Platinum Dunes on the recent remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW
MASSACRE. At Rogue Pictures, the Platinum Dunes team is prepping an
exorcism thriller to be directed by David Goyer and a Near Dark
remake to be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also
developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock's THE BIRDS, with
Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.
CRASH - A SERIES
CRASH, 2005's Oscar-winning best film, is being turned into a
thirteen-episode, one-hour original drama series for the Starz cable
network. Director/Writer Paul Haggis along with producers Bobby
Moresco, Bob Yari, Don Cheadle, Mark R. Harris and Tom Nunan who all
worked on the 2005 film are involved in the series co-produced by
Lionsgate and debuting exclusively on Starz in 2008. This marks only
the second time a Best Picture Oscar-winner has been turned into a
series, the first being "In the Heat of the Night". Production on the
drama is scheduled to begin in the Spring.
NEW E-MAIL NEWSLETTER
I have been toying with the idea of starting up a new Babylon 5
newsletter – one that would only go out via e-mail. It would not be
just a collection of items from the website, but also include some
fresh items written by readers and fans of Babylon 5. Items could be
book reviews, movie reviews, a discussion piece you want to submit to
others, etc.
If you are interested in contributing, send me a note and let's
talk. I know I don't have a lot of free time either, so a monthly
publication would be ambitious, but possible if enough people help
out. Drop me a note at sgbruckner@... if you are interested in
contributing.
I guess that wraps it up for now. I hope your team wins the Super
Bowl. If you aren't a fan, I hope you have a good book or set of
DVDs to occupy your time today. Be sure to drop over to the website when you
have a few minutes. There is a lot there I can't put into e-mail, including
movie clips from upcoming movies and DVD releases. But for now,
Take care.
