THE ZOCALO TODAY – June 24, 2006

WHAT'S NEW
There's a lot of information here. A juicy update from JMS will have
us keeping an eye out for news.

I had the pleasure of doing a podcast which aired last week. More
information on that is below.

JMS UPDATE
For the local B5 folks in and around Charlotte...I'll be there for the
Heroes Convention the weekend of June 30th, doing a lot of signing,
some panels, my usual one-person song and dance (minus the singing and
dancing, natch).

Also, being up to my tuchis in deadlines and general nonsense, I
forgot to put out a note that volume 8 of the B5 scripts went up
yesterday, which has the last few scripts from season three, including
obviously our season finale "Z'ha'dum," and the first batch of scripts
for season four. What's really cool is that, in addition to the new
intro -- which reveals for the first time how we literally nearly lost
the show because of an accounting error, among other cool stuff --
features a bunch of full pages of Peter Ledger's original concept art
for B5, including the first drawings of our characters at that time,
as well as the world of B5 itself. Most of it has not been seen
before, certainly not in anything more than postage size images on a
PTEN flyer.

There may also be some interesting announcements coming soon on the
film/tv front. Whether or not I will be able to talk about them by
Heroes Con, I don't know, but if not, certainly by San Diego (by which
time a lot of it will have been announced in the trades anyway). No
fair guessing, because trust me, most of this is stuff that can't be
guessed.

JMS STAR TREK PROPOSAL
Here is a link posted at Bryce Zabel's blog, where he recently posted
the 14 page treatment that he and JMS put together near the end of
Star Trek: Enterprise last year
http://bztv.typepad.com/newsviews/2006/06/spaced_out_star.html

BABYLON 5 SCRIPTS - VOLUME EIGHT IS NOW AVAILABLE
CONTAINS THESE 7 SCRIPTS:
* Shadow Dancing
* Z'ha'dum
* The Hour of the Wolf
* Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?
* The Summoning
* Falling Toward Apotheosis
* The Long Night

IN THIS VOLUME...the cliffhanger ending to Season Three, and the big
season opening episodes for Season Four, considered the two most
popular seasons in B5's history!

An original introduction and commentary written just for this volume
detailing the dangers posed by the death of the PTEN network, and
behind-the-scenes stories never told before, including how an
accounting error came within an inch of utterly ending the Babylon 5
story after year three.

There's also a couple of memos, but most important of all, something
new: in going through the B5 archives, jms discovered ALL OF THE
ORIGINAL CONCEPT ART created by artist Peter Ledger used in selling
B5. This was the VERY FIRST TIME that the Babylon 5 universe had been
visualized, and many of the elements in that early concept art were
carried across into the series.

Some of that artwork was used (in postage-stamp size) on a flyer from
PTEN, but most of it has NEVER been seen, and the rest has never been
seen properly, full-size. This volume includes FIFTEEN BLACK AND WHITE
FULL PAGES of that original artwork, PLUS a color illustration on the
back cover (subsequent volumes will also feature other full-color B5
concept art).

See parts of the B5 universe you've never seen before! Read scripts
you've never read before! Learn things you never knew before about the
colorful history and dangerous past of Babylon 5! All of this in
Volume 8 of THE BABYLON 5 SCRIPTS OF J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI!

$10 off through Tuesday, June 27 at 10pm PST

Babylon Podcast: Show #21
by Summer —
Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Welcome to Show #21!

No guest interview this week, and no Jeffrey either, so Tim and Summer
decide to run wild with B5 geeking.

First up, episode discussion about "By Any Means Necessary". Tim and
Summer revel in how well the A and B stories tie in together, and
delve into whether or not the B story could have been the better
choice for the A story. They also discuss what the intended political
repercussions for Sinclair might have been had he stayed around, or
whether we've already seen what was going to happen.

Next, Tim, Summer dive into "Signs and Portents", technically the
first of the WHAM episodes. The mysterious Mr Morden arrives with a
mission in mind, and much speculation abounds concerning his selection
criteria, and what exactly happened in that hallway with Kosh.
Listener Feedback: Tim and Summer dive into emails and comments:

Walter from LA agrees with commentary on B5 being the battering ram
that opened the door for other scifi shows with arcs and
characterization; Arioch asks about cast photos for the voices of The
Babylon Podcast;

This week's voicemail is a message from Greg from Galvin Australia
comments on the comic that tells the story of how Sinclair and
Garibaldi first met on Mars, and the use of Ivanova wallpapers. Summer
would also like to know where in the world B5 is still airing.

Babylon Podcast: Show #20
by Summer —
Wednesday, June 14, 2006

Welcome to Show #20!
Guest: Sandra Bruckner, ISN News

Tim and Summer find themselves flying without Jeffrey, and Sandra
Bruckner joins them for a chat.

Sandra runs the indepth and informative online resource ISN News: The
Zocalo Today, currently keeping Babylon 5 fans updated on where their
favorite B5 cast and crew members can be found in current projects.
She tells us all about how she became involved with B5, starting from
the hard copy fan letters through the news updates on the website
today. Sandra also relates her times spent on the B5 sets over the
years, covering B5 cast appearances at conventions, keeping track of
the B5 fan club sales, being an extra in "Objects at Rest", and much,
much more.

Next, Tim, Summer and Sandra engage in a roundtable discussion about
where they feel Babylon 5 ranks all-time in SF television, past and
present, and discuss how much B5 may have influenced current
television projects.

Listener Feedback: Tim and Summer dive into emails: Susan puts forth a
theory on how Marcus may have been a 30-year-old virgin; Chris tells
us about the DVD for the Biggs/Carter Experience that used to be
available from Pipetap Productions, the proceeds of which benefit
Richard Biggs' children.

This week's voicemails include messages from Alejandro comments on "A
Late Delivery from Avalon", and wants to know why Delenn was portrayed
as the Lady of the Lake; Alan in Dublin sends in an almost
unintelligible message thanking us for producing the show; Ed from NJ
sends his appreciation for the production values of the show, and
wants a comment on Jerry Doyle's pay-per-play podcast of his radio show.

INSIDE SCI-FI THIS WEEK:

AARON SPELLING PASSES AWAY
Aaron Spelling, creator of such shows as Charlie's Angels, Dynasty,
Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place, died Friday. He was 83.
Spelling passed away at his mansion in Los Angeles after suffering a
stroke on June 18. Spelling's list of hit shows included Love Boat,
Fantasy Island, Burke's Law, The Mod Squad, Starsky and Hutch, T.J.
Hooker, Matt Houston, Hart to Hart and Hotel. He kept his hand in
21st-century TV with series including 7th Heaven, Charmed and
Summerland. He also produced more than 140 television movies. You may
not have watched -- or even enjoyed -- his programs, but you have to
admire his ability to get programs on the air. At one point, he
accounted for one third of ABC's schedule.

IRON MAN
As we all know, timing is everything. Marvel and Paramount announced
that IRON MAN will be released on May 2, 2008. According to The
Hollywood Reporter, director Jon Favreau alluded to the date in a
posting on his Iron Man MySpace.com site as well. The Paramount
Pictures and Marvel Entertainment film will be an adaptation of the
Marvel Comics armored superhero. The project marks the first motion
picture to be produced by Marvel under its alliance with the studio.
IRON MAN is the first feature film to be produced independently by
Marvel Entertainment and also marks the first production under former
Marvel Studios chief executive officer Avi Arad's newly launched
production company, Avi Arad Productions. The film is expected to be
financed through Marvel's $525 million revolving film-financing
facility. Marvel President, Ken Feige said, "We're thrilled to be
launching the summer 2008 movie season with Iron Man. Marvel has had
great success with the first Friday in May -- Spider-Man broke records
on that first Friday and X2 debuted at the top of the box office
charts as well. We're looking forward to extending that track record
with Iron Man and are extremely pleased with the progress of the
script, the production team we are forming and the initial production
designs."
Here's how the film is described:
"Based upon Marvel's iconic Super Hero, the film will follow
billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark, who confronts the sins
of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. Equipped
with a high-tech suit of armor, he becomes Iron Man to combat evil on
a global scale."

SUPERMAN RETURNS
As the premiere date approaches, more and more trades are full of
interviews with cast and crew from SUPERMAN RETURNS. Early reviews are
very positive -- and I for one am anxiously awaiting the film.
Director Bryan Singer said in a recent interview that the movie is a
love story. "The whole thing about action and adventure [movies is] it
only really works if you care about the people that it's happening
to," Singer said. "And the great thing about science fiction and
fantasy is you can tell human stories from a completely unique
perspective." In SUPERMAN RETURNS, the Man of Steel (Brandon Routh)
returns from a mysterious five-year absence to discover that his
beloved Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) is engaged to another man (James
Marsden)—and appears to have a son as well. "The idea [was] I wanted
to make a love story," Singer said. "I've never made a chick flick. I
wanted to make something that my mother and father will tear up
watching. And yet I love science fiction and fantasy. I just love it.
So how do I merge these two things so that the teenager in me will
want to run out and see it, but at the same time, a grandparent can
take the grandkids to see it?" As for the complications in Superman's
love life, Singer said: "It's not simply that Lois Lane has moved on.
It's not simply that she's moved on with a guy who's not a bad
guy—he's a good guy—but there's a child. And that aspect is exciting
to me. And interesting. And it creates a deeper notion. It creates a
depth to his relationship with Lois Lane that had not existed before.
And I think that was necessary." Superman Returns opens June 28.

An exclusive sneak peek of SUPERMAN RETURNS in the form of a free
download of a two-and-a-half minute scene from the film on Apple's
iTunes Music Store. The file can can be viewed on a computer or iPod,
not to mention the film's original soundtrack, star Brandon Routh's
Celebrity Playlist and free podcasts featuring director Bryan Singer's
video journals as he chronicles the making of the movie.

WATCHMEN
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Zach Snyder has come aboard to
develop and direct WATCHMEN, a movie based on Alan Moore and Dave
Gibbons' seminal DC Comics graphic superhero novel. Warner Brothers is
financing the long-gestating movie, which Alex Tse is writing and
Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing. The project has been
associated with Fox, Universal and Paramount as well as such
filmmakers as Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass and
screenwriter David Hayter. Sources told the trade paper that Snyder
impressed Warner with 300, an adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic
novel, which he directed and co-wrote. Snyder shot the movie, a Greek
epic about the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C., on soundstages in
Montreal, using partial sets and green screens, similar in technique
to Robert Rodriguez's SIN CITY. Snyder also directed the 2004 hit Dawn
of the Dead. WATCHMEN is one of the most critically acclaimed series
in the genre and is a crime-conspiracy story that provided the first
realistic look at the behind-the- heroics lives of superhero archetypes.

SURFACE
Universal Studios Home Entertainment announced that it will release
SURFACE: THE COMPLETE SERIES on DVD on Aug. 15, with every episode of
the NBC SF show, at a suggested retail price of $49.98.

HARRY POTTER
Jason Isaacs is getting ready to shoot his role in the upcoming HARRY
POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Isaacs plays the villainous
Lucius Malfoy. He said in a recent interview with the LA Daily News,
"They started in February, but they go until the end of the year,
because they broke for some of the young actors to take their summer
exams. My bit is in September and October. It's a big blue-screen
battle for a lot of it, so that will be a laugh." Isaacs added: "We
always have to sign these incredible confidentiality clauses where we
offer up our children's eyeballs if we ever break them. I've never
quite understood, since they're the most popular books on the planet,
but anyway, I think I'm involved in the big battle." Isaacs admitted,
"I torture myself by always trying to be interesting and human on
screen, but every now and again it's great to be in Harry Potter and
just rip it up and be as singularly evil and unpleasant as possible."

MARVEL-QUESADA BLOG
Fans of Marvel Comics will enjoy reading through editor-in-chief Joe
Quesada's blog on Marvel.com, Cup of Blog, where he will post about
everything from what he eats for breakfast to what superhero he would
like to see dead next. Blogging is not new to Marvel. Quesada joins
other Marvel.com bloggers such as executive editor Tom Brevoort (Civil
War, New Avengers) and the X-bloggers Nick Lowe and Sean Ryan.

FUTURAMA
Three years after Fox canceled the show, Matt Groening's "Futurama"
will resume production for a 13-episode run on Comedy Central. The new
episodes will be added to the network's library of 72 "Futurama"
episodes previously licensed from 20th Century Fox Television. Voice
talent Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio will return for the
new episodes, which will debut in 2008. "There is a deep and
passionate fan base for this intelligent and very funny show that
matches perfectly with our audience and it is great that we can offer
them not just the existing library, but something they've never seen
as well," said David Bernath, senior VP, programming, Comedy Central.
"Futurama" marks the third Fox project revived by basic cable in
recent years. New episodes of "Greg the Bunny" are being ordered by
IFC, and Fox resurrected "Family Guy" after the series found success
on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

STAR TREK RUMORS
The Insider reports a rumor that Matt Damon is being eyed to play a
young Capt. James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' proposed 11th Star Trek
movie. Citing an anonymous source, the show reported that Abrams
(Mission: Impossible III) is so interested in Damon (The Bourne
Identity) that he's sought support from the original Kirk, William
Shatner. "Shatner gave his blessing," the source reportedly told the
show. "J.J. got his approval." Rumors are circulating that Abrams'
Trek movie will be a prequel to the original series, centering on Kirk
and Spock's early days at Starfleet. "J.J. wants Damon as Capt. Kirk,"
the source said. "He really loves the idea." For their part, Abrams
and his Trek producing partner Bryan Burk (who is also an executive
producer on Abram's hit ABC series Lost) have declined to comment on
speculation about the movie's storyline, saying only that any reports
about its narrative have been released prematurely.

BLADE - TV SERIES
BLADE, the TV series, is set to debut on June 28th with a two-hour
premiere on Spike TV. Eleven more one-hour episodes have been ordered,
and there's already talk of a second season. A contest to publicize
the show was recently won by Jason Bravener from WI. He managed to win
a night on the town in Vancouver and a visit to the set of the show.
Ten other lucky winners received Blade 1, 2, and 3 on DVD as well as
Blade Oakley sunglasses. The show's writer, Geoff Johns, recently said
that the show's story was "more grounded in the first film. Exploring
the mythology, how he got the tattoos, what he did before he was
Blade, as well as fleshing out what the Vampire Nation is. Blade is a
great character in the comics, but he's never sparked as much as he
did in the films. I love the character because he's a tortured
character that kicks ass. I like morally gray characters." "Everyone
knows that sustaining a series of movies is difficult to do," said
John Kroll from New Line. "As a television series, you can continue to
explore the characters and the world in a lot more depth. We felt that
this was the time to have the franchise make the transition, and
fortunately Spike TV was ready."

SERENITY SCREENING FOR CHARITY
Joss Whedon's SERENITY will be screened by fans in 46 theaters in six
countries June 22-30 to raise money for Equality Now, a gender-issues
charity.

COMIC BOOK HERO MOVIES
Independent producer for Marvel Comics, Avi Arad, told iF Magazine he
plans a "'do-over" of the HULK movie. "I loved the Hulk movie. It was
just a different approach, and it wasn't exactly the comic," Arad told
the magazine. "We want to be much closer to the comic. It's what we
would rather do." Although Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk film didn't perform as
expected, Arad said, "A lot of people are looking forward to the
comic-book version of the Hulk. That's the one we are making, and I
think it will be incredibly satisfying. It will be big and awesome and
a big ride."
THOR AND BLACK PANTHER
Arad also confirmed that a THOR movie is in the script-writing phase
and that The BLACK PANTHER film project is awaiting an OK from a
specific actor. Nick Fury and Ant Man are other projects Marvel wants
to bring to the big screen.
A TV series based on BLADE is debuting this summer, with 13 episodes
on Spike TV. Arad said he's excited about other cartoon shows: "We've
got a new Fantastic Four cartoon," Arad added, "We've got a new
Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon; it's going to be based on the comics.
We're going to do another Sony Spider-Man cartoon. We are probably
going to do an Iron Man cartoon after the movie."

PIRATES
In an interview with Newsweek, Johnny Depp said he's looking forward
to capping his teeth gold again and reprising the role of Captain Jack
Sparrow for future PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies. "He's a blast to
play. I'll be in a deep, dark depression saying goodbye to him. I'll
keep the costume and just prance around the house, entertain the kids.
Maybe PIRATES 4, 5 and 6. If they had a good script, why not? I mean,
at a certain point, the madness must stop, but for the moment, I can't
say that he's done." The second and third parts of PIRATES were filmed
back-to-back, and the first box office hit, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN:
THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL in 2003, earned five Academy Award
nominations, including Depp's first best-actor nomination for playing
Sparrow. The next installment, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S
CHEST, is scheduled for release on July 7, along with original cast
members Depp, Orlando Bloom, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley, as
well as Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards as the father of Depp's
character.

MARCO POLO
According to Reuters, Ex-LOST star Ian Somerhalder has signed on to
play the lead in RHI Entertainment's MARCO POLO mini-series. The
project follows the life of the 13th Century Venetian traveler and
chronicles his travel to Mongolia, where he was accepted as an envoy
into the court of Kublai Khan (Brian Dennehy) and spent 20 years on
perilous adventures. B.D. Wong also stars playing Polo's servant and
right-hand man.
