THE ZOCALO TODAY ¨C April 9, 2005

BABYLON 5 NEWS:

UPCOMING BABYLON 5 NOVELS:
Mongoose Publishing is proud to announce an agreement with Warner
Brothers to produce an all new range of novels and graphic novels
for Babylon 5. They promise some exciting tales lined up, delving
into never-before- explored areas of the Babylon 5 universe and
expanding the storyline beyond the TV series. Releases will begin
appearing in Q4 2005. As soon as more information is available, we
will post it. Thanks Ranger Joe for the report.

RANGER SIGHTING
Ranger Judy has passed along the following report:
Kimberly Hawthrone, formerly Theo in Jeremiah, presently as (1)
Barbara Owens in "Murder at the Presidio" (2005) in post production,
(2) Yolanda Watkins on "The L-Word", (3)"The Chronicles of Riddick"
(2004), (4)"Lucky 7" (2003)

STAR WARS FAN FILM COMPETITION
John Hudgens, creator of the Babylon 5 Music Videos, is a wonderful
film maker. His creation has again made it into the finals of the
2005 Official Star Wars FanFilm Awards. SITH APPRENTICE, written by
John, Lowell Cunningham and Denny Humbard, is now online at
http://www.atomfilms.com/af/content/sith_apprentice.

Here is more on the project from John (Fenn):
It's a parody of Donald Trump's reality show THE APPRENTICE, but set
in the Star Wars universe. Emperor Palpatine needs a new apprentice
to further his goals of galactic domination, and has turned to
reality television to fill the post. The final contestants are Count
Dooku, Jar Jar Binks, Darth Maul, and Darth Vader... which one will
be the new SITH APPRENTICE?

The film stars Robert Alley as The Emperor, Bob Bean as Darth Vader,
Kristen Caron as Darth Maul, and Patrick McCray as Count Dooku. Also
appearing are many of our usual gang of misfits, including Brandon
Alley, Brian Boling, Heather Harris, Denny Humbard, John & Sarah
Mailen, Jeff McClure, Tom Ott, and Ziggy McMillan. We also recieved
help from Trey Stokes and his Pink Five crew, so Pink Five herself
(Amy Earhart) makes a brief cameo!

What I'm asking all of you to do is VOTE! Watch the film, and then
vote for us (and tell all your friends to do the same!), as they're
polling the internet viewers to give an Audience Award for favorite
film... we want to win! But vote quickly, as the on-line voting ends
Monday night, April 4th, and the winners will be announced at the
Star Wars Celebration III convention in Indianapolis April 22nd...
So please, watch, vote for (the direct link for voting is
http://www.atomfilms.com/bin/vote/index.jsp), maybe write a positive
review of, and hopefully enjoy SITH APPRENTICE... we all had a blast
making it...

COMIC BOOKS COMING

J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI'S DREAM POLICE
Date: 3/27/2005 9:58:19 PM
Babylon 5 Moderated Newsgroup
I'd mentioned a while back that I would remind folks when the stores
would begin taking orders for Dream Police...so this is it.
Dream Police will appear as a one-shot on June 22nd, but Marvel has
a tendency to print to orders, so if you don't order it up front, it
may not be available. Apparently interest is high, so I have a
sneaking suspicion this one may disappear fast.

Basically, the premise of Dream Police -- which has been in the
works for a long time now, and finally seeing print -- is that we
all enter the dreamscape when we fall asleep, and the denizens of
said dreamscape all play their roles...but when someone doesn't do
their job, or a crime against dreamers is committed, the Dream
Police come in.

The thing is...the Dream Police are plain clothes detectives and
beat cops who walk, talk and behave like characters out of the
Maltese Falcon, or Dragnet, or Adam 12, that very literal, staccato,
clipped back-and-forth style of dialogue.

So what you've got is a very funny, weird, surreal book that puts
these very noir characters up against the dreamscape...and I'm just
pleased as punch with the result.

Hence, this recommendation. There's no long arc to sign onto, just
the one issue, but it's just a hoot and a half to read. It's fromm
Marvel under the Icon imprint, and I commend it highly to all B5
folks.

WHAT¡¯S NEW IN SCIENCE FICTION:

MR. AND MRS. SMITH:
In an interview with USA Today, director Doug Liman said that the
husband-vs.-wife spy thriller MR. AND MRS. SMITH features a scene to
die for. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play married spies who don't
know they've been contracted to kill each other. It's "about the
challenges of maintaining a marriage," Liman said. As for the big
scene, Liman said, people should watch for a fight involving
automatic weapons. It's one "people will talk about for years to
come," he promised. MR. AND MRS. SMITH opens June 10.

ELEKTRA:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ELEKTRA sold about 1 million
combined DVD and VHS units Tuesday, its first day in release on home
video.

MGM:
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. (MGM) announced that a consortium comprised
of Sony Corporation of America, Providence Equity Partners, Texas
Pacific Group, Comcast Corporation and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners
completed its acquisition of the Company. This transaction
establishes MGM as one of the world's largest privately held,
independent motion picture, television and home video companies. Dan
Taylor, President of MGM said, "Today we begin a new, exciting
chapter in the life of MGM. With our strong financial and strategic
partners, we look forward to building on MGM's exceptional legacy
and capitalizing on emerging technologies and markets to provide
consumers worldwide more opportunities to enjoy the world's largest
modern library of films and television programming. We look forward
to a very bright future for MGM." MGM will continue to develop new
original television programs and is currently completing production
on the ninth season of Stargate SG-1 and the second season of
Stargate Atlantis, which will both premiere this summer. Sony
Pictures Television will assume production management for certain
MGM television content.

THRESHOLD:
David Goyer, co-creator of CBS' SF television pilot THRESHOLD, said
in a recent interview that the show's premise involves a new kind of
alien invasion. "It's an interesting one-liner. It has to do with an
alien invasion, but you never see the aliens. It's a very novel
approach to an alien invasion story, because they're invading us
through our DNA. They're bio-forming us. They're altering us." Goyer
said, while promoting the DVD release of his BLADE: THE TRINITY,
that the idea of the series is based on an obscure scientific
fact. "Something like 80 to 90 percent of our DNA is junk DNA," he
said. "We don't know what it does. And the aliens have figured out a
way to activate it and are slowly, literally, changing our
chromosomes. They're basically, over the course of generations,
turning us into them. Along with that they've got genetic racial
memories, things like that, that they're starting to implant in us."
Goyer will direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer on
the series, alongside Brannon Braga (Star Trek: Enterprise) and
David Heyman (the Harry Potter films). Goyer said he has been
involved in every aspect of the series so far, from writing to
casting to editing. "I did all of that," he said. "I ended up doing
a draft of it with Brannon. I was the one that set it up at the
network, and then we brought Brannon in, and he and I wrote it, and
he and I cast it, along with David Heyman. We did the whole thing."
Although CBS has not officially made a commitment to the series,
Goyer is optimistic that the show will be on the network in the
fall. "We'll know for sure in about five weeks," he said.

GARFIELD:
20th Century Fox has given the go ahead for a sequel to last year's
minor family hit GARFIELD and they've just hired director Tim Hill.
Hill's directing credits include Disney's Max Keebel's BIG MOVE and
the Jim Henson classic MUPPETS IN SPACE as well as being a writer on
the SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE. Garfield 2 is currently scheduled
to open July 28, 2006.

THE GOOD GERMAN:
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that THE GOOD GERMAN, a romantic
thriller set during WWII, has gotten the interest of George Clooney
and Cate Blanchett. If the talks work out, Clooney will play an
American journalist sent to cover the Allied summit meeting that
will decide the future of Germany after WWII. Instead, he uses it as
an opportunity to look for a lost love, and he gets caught up in a
murder mystery. Clooney is co-producing the film with his Section
Eight partner Steven Soderbergh, who will also direct the film
written by Paul Attanasio based on Joseph Kanon's 2001 book. It
would be the fifth time Clooney and Soderbergh collaborated on a
film. Blanchett comes off her recent Academy Award win for "The
Aviator."

PERFUME:
According to Reuters, DreamWorks has picked up North American rights
to PERFUME, the period serial-killer drama based on Patrick
Sueskind's international best-seller "Perfume: The Story of a
Murderer," which Tom Tykwer is to direct. Ben Whishaw stars as Jean-
Baptiste Grenouille, a Frenchman born with no sense of smell who
develops a near super-human olfactory sense. Using his talent to
create unrivaled perfumes, he turns to murder while searching for
the ultimate scent. Alan Rickman stars as perfume merchant Antoine
Richis, who's daughter becomes one of Grenouille's targets. Shooting
begins July at Bavaria Studios in Munich and on location in Spain
and France. The 1985 novel stands as the most successful German
novel since 1929's "All Quiet on the Western Front."

MIAMI VICE:
The Hollywood Reporter reports that that Dion Beebe will serve as
the director of photography on the big-screen version of MIAMI VICE.
Beebe previously teamed with Vice director Michael Mann on
COLLATERAL, for which Beebe and Paul Cameron received the top
cinematography prize at the British Academy Film Awards. Beebe is
reportedly "testing the Panavision Genesis, the Thomson Viper and
the Sony HDCAM for shooting Vice night sequences. Asked whether he
is considering using a combination of digital cameras again, Beebe
said: 'I don't think so. We'd like to keep it to just one digital
camera this time.'" THR also says William Goldenberg (Domino) and
Paul Rubell (The Island) will be the editors of Miami Vice, with
Victor Kempster (Any Given Sunday) onboard as production designer.
Miami Vice begins filming soon for a summer '06 release.

DOCTOR WHO APOLOGY:
The BBC issued an unusual apology to Christopher Eccleston for
mischaracterizing his reasons for departing the BBC's DOCTOR WHO
series. The BBC said that it failed to consult Eccleston before
confirming the actor's departure and that it erroneously attributed
statements to the actor that he was leaving because he feared being
typecast and found the show's schedule grueling. In fact, the BBC
reported, the network broke an agreement with Eccleston not to
reveal that he had planned to film just one season of the hit show
all along. "The BBC regrets not speaking to Christopher before it
responded to the press questions on Wednesday 30 March," the BBC's
head of drama and commissioning, Jane Tranter, said in a
statement. "The BBC further regrets that it falsely attributed a
statement to Christopher and apologizes to him." A second season of
the new DOCTOR WHO has already been ordered. The BBC confirmed that
it is in talks with actor David Tennant as a possible replacement
for Eccleston.

LOST:
While ABC has ordered up a second season of LOST, it will come to
the airwaves without David Fury, a key writer and co-executive
producer. Fury is quitting the show immediately to work on two other
series, THE INSIDE and 24, and maybe develop a show on his own. Fury
said, "I'm very proud of Lost and my contribution to the show, but
for numerous personal reasons, I feel like it's time for me to move
on to other things." He added, "I spent seven years of my career in
one place [working on Buffy and its spinoff series, Angel], and it's
a lot of fun to work in different worlds. LOST was a lot of fun, and
I have a great deal of gratitude for [series co-creators] J.J.
[Abrams] and Damon [Lindelof]. I know the show will continue to be
great, and I look forward to viewing it." Fury will reunite with his
former Whedonverse colleagues at THE INSIDE, a Fox drama co-created
by Tim Minear (Angel, Wonderfalls) and Howard Gordon (Angel,
24). "I'll be starting this Monday [April 11]," Fury said. "I'm very
excited about it. Tim and I have been anxious to work on something
together, and this was a nice opportunity. I had wanted at the very
least to write a script for him, but there was a lot of backstage
goings on with Tim and Howard, and they made it happen for Fox to
bring me over. I'll be a full-time co-executive producer for the
remaining six episodes left in [The Inside's] 13-episode order.
Then, as soon as I'm done with that, I'll be going over to 24. I've
been playing in the genre world for so long now, it will be
interesting to go over there."

TRANSFORMERS: Variety reports that Michael Bay will direct THE
TRANSFORMERS for DreamWorks and Paramount, with Steven Spielberg
executive producing. The news confirmed rumors about the movie,
which is scheduled for a Thanksgiving 2006 release. Shooting will
begin in the fall. Spielberg reportedly came up with a new take,
which he imparted to writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci; the
original script was by John Rogers. Kurtzman and Orci built on the
idea and pitched it to Bay, whom they worked with on DreamWorks'
upcoming SF action film THE ISLAND. Kurtzman and Orci are expected
to turn in a script within a month, at which point DreamWorks is
hoping to lock in Bay. THE TRANSFORMERS is based on the toy line,
which spawned a comic series, TV show and animated feature in the
1980s.

PROXIMITY EFFECT:
According to Variety, Universal Pictures has acquired screen rights
to the Top Cow comic series PROXIMITY EFFECT. Stephen Sommers and
Bob Ducsay will produce via the Sommers Co.; Jason Rothenberg
(Surrogate) will write the script. The comic centers on a woman who
exhibits extraordinary powers, but only when she is within a certain
distance of a particular guy. Sommers (Van Helsing) does not plan to
direct, but Proximity becomes one of several properties he and
Ducsay have set up since forming their company at the studio.
PROXMITY EFECT will be executive produced by the comic's creator,
Roger Mincheff.

THE SPIRIT:
SMALLVILLE producer and comic-book writer Jeph Loeb has been tapped
to write a big-screen version of THE SPIRIT, based on the comic hero
created in 1940 by Will Eisner. Variety reported that Odd Lot
Entertainment and Batfilm Productions will develop the project. THE
SPIRIT centers on a masked detective who is believed dead and uses
that to his advantage to fight the criminals of Central City from
his base at Wildwood Cemetery.

SUPERMAN RETURNS:
The news of Hugh Laurie's departure from SUPERMAN RETURNS yesterday
was sad -- he would have made a terrific Perry White. However, today
word comes from Variety that Frank Langella will replace Laurie in
this key role. Langella joins a cast that includes Brandon Routh as
the Man of Steel, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and Kate Bosworth as
Lois Lane. Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris penned the script.

RACE WITH THE DEVIL:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Chris Moore will make
his directorial debut on RACE WITH THE DEVIL, a remake of a 1975
horror thriller in which a Satanic cult targets two couples on a
skiing trip.

JAMES BOND:
For many people, there will only be one James Bond -- Sean Connery.
Indeed, he has agreed to reprise his role as James Bond for
Electronic Arts' upcoming video game version of "From Russia With
Love." Connery will record dialogue for the game, and his likeness
will appear as it did in MGM's 1963 hit movie. He will be joined by
other likenesses from the original cast of the film as the game will
bring to life such characters as the original Q (Desmond Llewelyn),
Donald "Red" Grant (Robert Shaw), Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya), Tatiana
Romanova (Daniela Bianchi), Kerim Bay (Pedro Armendariz) and Miss
Moneypenny (Lois Maxwell). In addition, EA will work with Hollywood
talent to round out the game. Connery said in a recent
interview, "As an artist, I see this as another way to explore the
creative process. Video games are an extremely popular form of
entertainment today, and I am looking forward to seeing how it all
fits together." The game is slated for release in the fall on
PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, meaning it will come out before
MGM and Danjaq Prods.' feature film remake of "Casino Royale," which
is scheduled for completion next year.

PILOT NEWS:
Over at The Hollywood Reporter, information has been posted about
new pilots. Among the information listed is word that Greg Germann
has signed on to star in the Sci Fi Channel pilot "Eureka."

JULES VERNE FILM FESTIVAL:
The Jules Verne Festival will be held in Paris, France from April 6-
11. Guests scheduled to attend at the Festival include SMALLVILLE
creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, actors Erica Durance (Lois)
and Allison Mack (Chloe), and two members from the band Remy Zero.
There will also be exclusive footage of Tom Welling and Kristin
Kreuk to be seen at the event. April 7 will be their "Smallville
Night Special," and newly French dubbed versions of the
episodes "Crusade" and "Run" will be seen. "Transference" will be a
special subtitled version so people can notice the different nuances
of Tom Welling and John Glover's performances.

RISE:
According to cinescape, Charlies Angels star Lucy Liu is rumoured to
be headlining RISE, a new supernatural thriller from Sam Raimi's
Ghost House Pictures. The movie, which centers on a young female
reporter who wakes up in a morgue to discover that she is no longer
among the living and vows revenge against those responsible for
putting her there - has been on the drawing board for a couple of
years now.
