HOLIDAY PROJECTS
As I was driving into the office, I was wondering how we might make
a difference to just a few folks this year. Here are three projects
I've come up with that I think we could have fun with, but I need
your help:
PENNY LANE: Pat Tallman (Lyta Alexander on Babylon 5) has labored on
behalf of Penny Lane for years. Her BE A SANTA program has grown
each year -- but so has the number of kids who need your help to
have a "merry" holiday season. See the paragraph below about Pat's
PENNY LANE project or go to <
http://www.thegalacticgateway.com> for
more information.
CHRISTMAS FOR THE KIDS: With the passing of Richard Biggs and Tim
Choate, the realization that our time on earth is not infinite and
it can be taken away very suddenly. The families of Richard and Tim
will feel their loss this year, especially during this holiday
season. There are memorial funds for the children of these fine
actors. Please take the time to send along a holiday donation.
Addresses are:
Children of Richard James Biggs II
Washington Mutual Bank
840 N. San Fernando Blvd
Burbank CA 91502.
The Tim Choate Memorial Fund
P.O. Box 861355
Los Angeles, CA 90086
LETTERS FROM HOME: I hope you have all read Stephen Austin's
(Pak'Ma'Ra Ambassador on Babylon 5) account of his trip to entertain
the troops in the Middle East
<
http://www.isnnews.net/zocalo/austin.shtml. He and his group have
brought a lot of laughter and enjoyment to people who are stationed
in the region.
Our readers must have friends and relatives stationed abroad as
well. How can we help them? How about putting together a list of
addresses that readers could write to? Letters from friends might be
just the ticket for these young men and women so far from home. If
you know of someone in the service that might enjoy getting letters
or e-mail, send along their address and a brief description of them -
- just so that we'll have something to start up a conversation with.
I will post the addresses here at the website -- and if you want to
tell me which ones have been selected, we can make sure that
everyone on the list starts to get some mail.
Send your addresses to
sgbruckner@... and I can get started with
a webpage.
DISCUSSION TOPICS
Ranger Gary suggested:
Spanning the last 20 years of Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV, which three TV
shows were most underrated/underappreciated and had the plug pulled
too soon (2 seasons or less)? Why did they deserve a longer life?
Alternatively, in your opinion which three shows during the same
period lasted way too long and never should have made it past their
1st season? Why should these 3 overrated TV shows should have
expired ASAP?
Send in your thoughts and comments to
sgbruckner@... and I will
post them on the Discussion Page for everyone to share and enjoy.
See what has come in so far. If you see an old topic you want to

PAT TALLMAN
For years, Pat Tallman has been involved with the Penny Lane
Organization. Patty is now getting ready for her BE A SANTA program.
Pat wants to again make sure that every child at the PENNY LANE
receives a Christmas gift. Please go to
<
http://www.thegalacticgateway.com> for more details.
Here's a note from one reader that did get involved with Penny Lane:
Hi, Sandra -
Thanks, as always, for the great job you do with ISN News. I just
wanted to second your note about Pat Tallman's Be A Santa program
for Penny Lane.
Two years ago I began participating in the program because of the
posting on your website. At the time I was scrambling for work
through all kinds of temporary jobs and didn't have much money. I
decided to check out the wish lists anyway. One of the children was
looking for art supplies. Like many artists, I have extra supplies
and was able to fill some of that child's wish. It made me feel good
that I could do something for someone else even at that point in my
life.
However, it wasn't until Penny Lane's Voices of Our Children event
in October that I really understood the scope of the work provided
by that organization. Through several circumstances I was asked to
draw caricatures at the event to raise money. It gave me to
opportunity to meet some of the Penny Lane children, who were also
volunteers, and hear letters about their experiences read by actors
(including Pat, Elliot Gould, Louis Gossett, Jr., etc.)
Penny Lane provides foster care, mentoring, support, life skills and
other training to children who are victims of abuse and violence.
The work they do is amazing.
I urge ISN News readers, even those who are cynical about the
holidays, to give one gift from the wish lists as soon as they are
posted. What may be a small thing for you can have a huge impact on
another person's life.
Thanks again, Sandra.
Happy Halloween!

WHAT'S NEW IN SCI-FI THIS WEEK:
FIREFLY/SERENITY: I know a lot of FIREFLY fans can't wait to hear
more about Joss Whedon's efforts to bring SERENITY to the big
screen. Whedon has found adapting his Fox TV series for the big
screen. In a interview from the set at Universal Studios in Los
Angeles, Whedon said, "It's incredibly hard, you know, building a
story that doesn't repeat or contradict what we've already done,
that satisfies the fans, and yet is really made for people who have
never seen the show. [It's] incredibly tricky. There's pitfalls
everywhere." SERENITY, set 500 years in the future, picks up the
story of the Firefly-class transport ship Serenity. While Fox
cancelled it before it completed a season, fans enthusiastically
embraced the show and its subsequent DVD release persuaded Universal
Pictures to green-light a movie adaptation. "It's the hardest story
I've ever had to structure," Whedon said. But, he added, "once I get
writing these people, it's the easiest thing in the world, because I
know them so well. The other thing is, a TV show is built around
slow development of character. A movie ... is built around momentum.
They're very different things. So ... you have to let some things
drop, and you have to speed some things up, and you have to sort of
know which ones are which." SERENITY marks Whedon's feature-film
directorial debut. Whedon has been critical in the past about how
his movie scripts for such films as Alien: Resurrection and the
original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie have been realized. "After
Alien: Resurrection I said the next person who ruins one of my
scripts is going to be me," he said, with tongue in cheek. "And I
think I'm doing a fine job. Actually, I think that the director on
occasion could use a little more imagination and the writer could
have shut up occasionally. We fight, but we're still getting along
better than I usually do." SERENITY is set to open April 22, 2005.
STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE: UPN reported that the first of three STAR
TREK: ENTERPRISE episodes featuring guest star Brent Spiner ranked
first in ratings among men 18-49 in its premiere Oct. 29. The
episode, "Borderland," drew a 1.7 rating among men 18-49 and also
improved ratings for UPN in the Friday 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot among
total viewers, with an audience of 3.2 million. The second of the
three-episode arc, "Cold Station 12," aired last night and will be
repeated over the weekend. In it, Spiner's character, the criminal
scientist Arik Soong, is reunited with his genetically engineered
creations called Augments, who break into a medical outpost where
Soong once worked to steal the embryos of hundreds more potential
Augments. The third episode, "The Augments," airs Nov. 12.
THE INVISIBLE: Screenwriter/director David Goyer's (BLADE: TRINITY)
next project will be the remake of the Swedish supernatural thriller
THE INVISIBLE for DreamWorks and Spyglass Entertainment. Variety
describes the movie as about two teenagers that are invisible to all
those around themselves, one for psychological reasons and the other
because his death has really left him as an unseen ghost. The
Swedish film centered on an older teen named Niklas who is beaten
into unconsciousness by a bully. When he awakes and heads off to
school, he soon discovers that no one can see him -- because he's
dead and a ghost. The story then follows the spirit of Niklas as he
observes what happens to his killer and whether his body will be
discovered.
AT THE MOVIES THIS WEEKEND: Opening this week are a couple of films
to take note of. THE INCREDIBLES is a great animated tale from
Pixar. These folks really know how to tell a story that is good for
both children and adults. Starring: (Voices) Craig T. Nelson, Holly
Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Lee, Dominique Louis, Teddy Newton
and Jean Sincere. For reviews, go to

PLAGUE: Variety reports that Clive Barker has teamed with Armada
Pictures to produce the SF horror thriller PLAGUE. Hal Masonberg and
Teal Minton wrote the script, which is to be directed by Masonberg.
Preproduction for the film is set for February. PLAGUE is set in the
future, when a mysterious apocalypse has left the world's children
comatose and unresponsive. Barker, Jorge Saralegui and Tim O'Hair
are producing.
PROOF POSITIVE: Amanda Topping is finding that squeezing in hosting
SCIFI's new alternative reality series PROOF POSITIVE: EVIDENCE OF
THE PARANORMAL and her duties is Major Samantha Carter on STARGATE
SG-1 is a challenge. She has taken her normal time off from STARGATE
and traveled to LA and Chicago to shoot the series. Tapping said in
a recent interview, "So it was pretty crazy squeezing it in while
shooting Stargate, but it's a very cool show." PROOF POSITIVE uses
case histories, scientific developments and experts to examine the
blurry line between science fiction and science fact. "Conceptually,
I love it," Tapping said. "I love the idea that we actually put
things to the test, that there are actually forensic tests that you
can do to determine the veracity of paranormal phenomena. I'm a huge
believer in the paranormal, so some of the stories really freaked me
out. Some of the stories, even though they [may be] proven
inconclusive or proven proof negative, you can still go, 'Wait a
second. I don't know about that. Just because that test didn't work
doesn't mean ... .' So I think it makes for some great debate. Proof
Positive airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
STAR WARS: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH: Yesterday Access
Hollywood premiered the trailer for the final STAR WARS film,
EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH. The trailer will begin playing in
movie theaters on Friday and be available online for the general
public the week after. The Star Wars Fan website was among the first
to post screen captures from AH showing our very first look at Sith
Lord Darth Sidious in lightsaber combat. You will also get a quick
look at Anakin Skywalker locking 'sabers with Count Dooku
(Christopher Lee) while Chancellor Palpatine looks on from his seat.
Members of STAR WARS.com's Hyperspace premium service and America On-
Line can now download the new trailer for EPISODE III - REVENGE OF
THE SITH. The trailer will be open to the public next week.
ELEKTRA: With ELEKTRA's premiere of January 14 drawing near, 20th
Century Fox has launched the official website for Elektra, starring
Jennifer Garner. The site includes a Flash intro, the synopsis,
wallpaper, international release dates, and two featurettes. The two
clips feature director Rob Bowman talking about the film from the
editing room as well as new footage.

SCIFI CHANNEL: Thomas P. Vitale, senior vice president,
acquisitions, scheduling and program planning, has been promoted to
the position of senior vice president, programming and original
movies for the SCI FI Channel. The announcement was made by Dave
Howe, general manager of SCI FI, to whom Vitale reports.
FIRST SNOW: Variety reports that Guy Pearce (Memento) will star in
El Camino Pictures' FIRST SNOW, about a man who falls into a
psychological tailspin when a psychic predicts his death. Mark
Fergus will direct, from a script he wrote with Hawk Ostby. El
Camino and Syndicate principal Bob Yari will produce, with Tom
Lassally, Robyn Meisinger and Sean Furst and Bryan Furst.
MERMAIDS SINGING: According to Variety, Jessica Lange, Neve Campbell
and Evan Rachel Wood now are attached to star in Robin Swicord's
adaptation of THE MERMAIDS SINGING, a romantic tale set on an
enchanted Irish isle. New Films International has signed on to co-
produce and license the movie worldwide. Based on Lisa Carey's
novel, the story deals with three generations of women struggling
with first loves and wrenching decisions that change their lives.
STARGATE ATLANTIS: With production having ended on season one of
ATLANTIS, Joe Flanigan (Maj. John Sheppard) says that the once-lost
city of Atlantis will begin to reveal its secrets during the second
half of the season and on into the future. "On the overall level,
what I want to see happen, and what will happen, is that the city of
Atlantis is really remarkable. It's essentially what Manhattan would
be if it were abandoned. If you can imagine the size of Manhattan
and have it be just completely empty, it would take forever to
explore that place." In a recent interview, Flanigan said, "What
we'll find out is that Atlantis actually serves a higher purpose,
but it will take a long time for us to figure out what that is. And
we'll slowly see the city come to life and start living up to its
potential, and then there will be an ultimate cosmic purpose to the
city of Atlantis. And that's a pretty interesting angle to explore.
Of course, it's going to take a few seasons." Stargate Atlantis airs
Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT; the second half of season one will
debut in January 2005.
TRANSFORMERS: John Rogers (CATWOMAN) is writing TRANSFORMERS, the
DreamWorks/Paramount live-action project based on the popular Hasbro
toys. Variety reports that Steven Spielberg is executive producing
the film that is slated for a Summer 2006 release and will likely be
a franchise property. Tom DeSanto, who executive produced the two X-
Men films, wrote the story that Rogers will adapt.

STARGATE: Amanda Tapping, Col. Samantha Carter on STARGATE SG-1, is
pregnant with her first child. Should the series go into season
nine, Tapping does not want to see her pregnancy written into her
character arc. In a recent interview, she said, "I don't think that
would work for Carter at all. It would so change her if she were a
mom. I just don't think that she would be back with the Stargate
program." Tapping has been married to Alan Kovacs for 10 years and
is due in March. STARGATE SG-1 will kick off the second half of its
eighth season in January 2005.
THE CITY OF EMBER: Variety reports that Playtone partners Tom Hanks
and Gary Goetzman have bought Jeanne DuPrau's young adult SF best-
seller THE CITY OF EMBER to adapt into a movie. The partners are in
talks with Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson to
adapt it and Gil Kenan (Monster House) to make his live- action
directorial debut. Walden Media is coming aboard as co-producer and
financier. The story is set in a future when Earth's citizens have
moved underground to escape the planet's toxic atmosphere and deals
with two teens: one who longs to be a messenger to venture above
ground, and another who dreams of working underground to repair a
generator whose failure will doom the city's power supply.
CONSTANTINE: It appears that the new Keanu Reeves movie,
CONSTANTINE, has received an R rating in the U.S. Rumors have it
that some scenes are being reshot, raising speculation as to whether
the movie makers are taking advantage of the R rating to go back
and 'spice-up' certain scenes or are being forced to tone-down
scenes in order to make it a PG-13 flick.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Columbia Pictures' THE GRUDGE held on to top
spot at the movies this weekend, dropping a little less than 43%
from its gross last weekend. After two weekends the horror remake
has earned $71.2 million dollars, practically guaranteeing a sequel.
Universal's biopic RAY opened solidly at the second spot, netting
$20 M and change while Lions Gate's SAW came in third with $17 M.
RAY will take another couple of weeks to earn all of its money back
but SAW is already in the black; the film reportedly cost only $1 M
to make, proving once again that bigger doesn't always mean better.
SHARK TALE is now in fourth spot (total $147 M), TEAM AMERICA is
down to eighth ($27 M total) and THE FORGOTTEN is down to thirteenth
overall ($64 M gross.) Here are the estimated box office receipts of
the top twelve films from October 29 through to October 31:

ANGEL: According to the Hollywood Reporter, ANGEL's David Boreanaz
is looking to return to series television. He is set to star in a
drama project for ABC based on the life of undercover hit man Jack
Ballantine. The show, from Warner Bros. Television and studio-based
Tannenbaum Co., has received a script commitment from the network.
Feature writer Patrick Smith Kelly ("Don't Say a Word") is penning
the script, which would star Boreanaz as an undercover cop in the
world of murder for hire. Kelly is also executive producing with
Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum. Boreanaz, who received three
Saturn Awards for playing the title role on "Angel," recently
completed the indie films "Mr. Fix It" and "The Hard Easy." He is
filming another indie, "These Girls," written and directed by John
Hazlett.
SPYGIRL: The Hollywood Reporter indicates that LEGALLY BLONDE
director Robert Luketic is attached to film and executive produce a
gumshoe drama in development at the WB Network based on Amy Gray's
memoir "Spygirl: True Adventures From My Life as a Private Eye." The
untitled project centers on a twentysomething Ivy League graduate
who quits her publishing job to join a small Manhattan P.I. agency
and pursue her childhood dream of being a private investigator.
Working with a gang of misfit colleagues, she discovers uncanny
parallels between her investigations and her tumultuous love life.
The network has committed to a pilot, which will be written by
Dawson's Creek alumna Maggie Friedman.
