Well, tonight was as usual a good episode. So my question for the group is -
If u were in Mackeys place and you arrested someone from the opposite sports
team would you keep them "hostage" until you saw fit? My answer - YES!! No
one messes with my Boston sports teams!!
I think Shane is really starting to lose it. Must be the Irish in him. [yeah
IRISH!!!} I sense Shane might be the one to let it slip about the cop
killing and Vic might have to take care of him. Good job to Det. Wyms, kicks
him right where it hurts most.
I had a feeling Officer Lowe was gay. Who do you think will out him and more
importantly, what do you think the squad will do??

I tried to contact FX to ask permission to use a publicity photo for
the home page of our group and to ask where I could get an uploadable
pic. Their response: stone silence--nada, zilch. I contacted another
group owner and she told me to be careful because Fox went after
several web sites for unauthorized use of pics--gee, I guess they
don't believe in the old saying "there's no such thing as bad
publicity"! Anyway, I tried to do it the right way and hit a stone
wall. Anyone have any ideas?

> 1. How did you find out about "The Shield?"
How could anyone miss the adds. FX pretty much flooded the air with the
commercials on all of the fox family chanels.

> 2. What made you decide to watch "The Shield?"
Vic, AKA Tony, made us tune in. We were faithfull watchers of the commish and
still remember the show where "tonyland" was coined. This looked like tonyland
on steroids.

> 3. How far do you think cops should be able to go to get the truth?
Generally, cops should only be able to go as far as the constitution allows.
However, the first episode brings the debate to a point. What if there was a 7
year old that would die if you didn't get the information. Just as bad, what if
a cop had arrested someone involved in the 9-11-01 events and KNOWN that the
arestee had information that could stop the twin towers and pentegon from

culpable no matter which choice he makes.

  4. How far do you think cable TV should be able to go in terms of language,
nudity, sexual content? Should it have different standards that broadcast
network TV?

This show reflects society in general accurately. As such, it is appropriate tv.
These are the people that cops deal with and someone that cops, if not careful
and well centered will become.

  5. What do you want to ask the guru sitting cross-legged at the top of the
highest mountain?

If you know so much what the hell are you doing here?

  6. What other cop or law-related shows do you like?
NYPD blue, 24, The District, X-files, Crossing Jorden.

  7. Do you have any experience with or in the criminal justice system?
I am a copper

  8. Most of us know Michael Chiklis as "The Commish" and he was even in the
comedy "Daddio". What do you think of Michael's portrayal of corrupt cop Vic
Mackey?

If he doesn't win awards for this people don't know good acting.

  9. Reading and knowing all about police brutality and police corruption and now
seeing "The Shield" what do you really think about the law enforcement agency?
Do you think cops think they are above the law?

Some cops believe that. It is up to the good cops to act when the see rogues.
The fact that this series started out with the title Rampart is appropriate.
That shows what happens when the good cops go for the blow jobs instead of
standing up for what is right.

  10. What in a nutshell is your view of the criminal justice system?
The Criminal Justice system is overloaded. It's not broken, and I say that after
having been sued and sitting in federal district court watching 9 people to
stupid to get out of jury duty decide if I was wrong, I wasn't. The big problem
is society. Sir Robert Peele, the founder of the Londen Metropolitan Police
Department said correctly that police, and as an extension the rest of the
system, are nothing but the peoples representatives. It is the people who must
step up to the plate and realize what happens when you leave it to the

Well in the spirit of adding momentum to the conversation . . . :)

> 1. How did you find out about "The Shield?"

Commercials. I don't remember watching FX so I'm not sure where the
commercials actually aired. Does anyone know on which channels the
commercials aired?

> 2. What made you decide to watch "The Shield?"

The commish as a serious bad ass? I just HAD to see them try to pull
that one off. And pull it off the did. Admireably so. THat dudes
outright scary now.

> 3. How far do you think cops should be able to go to get the truth?

I'm taking a pass on this one and reminding myself that its a
television show. I don't want to think of cops plungering a guy's
colon out in a station house bathroom or anything of the like.

> 4. How far do you think cable TV should be able to go in terms of
language,
> nudity, sexual content? Should it have different standards that
broadcast
> network TV?

I don't have any evidence to back this up but I'm not sure there are
any real 'laws' about content on tv. I was under the impression that
it was advertisers willingness to be associated w/ a programme that
all but determined how far it could go.

> 6. What other cop or law-related shows do you like?

I liked Brookln South (a Bochco production) for the whole ten minutes
it was on. It was constantly preempted for crap like 'the septuplets
first birthday party!' (remember them? Neither does anyone else
anymore.) ANd they wondered why it didn't catch people up in the
story. It was something like 4 weeks between new episodes at one
stretch.

It also seemed that Mackey was having some pangs of conscience; the
look of pain on his face while bench pressing was more than just
struggling with the weights. Was that supposed to be symbolic do you
think? ... was what he did becoming a weight on his conscience?
Mackey looked pretty cold-blooded when he pulled the trigger, like he
had it all planned out. So why the conscience pangs later? And Jan
is right about Aceveda's ambivalance ... he hates Mackey, yet calls
on him to interrogate the pervert doctor because the results are more
important. Many shades of gray and not many (if any) absolutes.
Seems to be the in-thing in tv these days ... no more good guys, bad
guys ... now they want we, the viewers, to decide for ourselves.
Reminds me of the betting line in sports gambling. The house always
wins because the point spread is based on how many on each side are
betting.

Good episode tonight. I am really strongly disliking Capt. Aceveda. You
think he would be happy to have a cop like Mackey being on his side. he may
be a little brutal, but it's ok because he gets the bad guys.
Really impressed with Michael Chiklis on The Shield.

Looking forward to tonight's episode. There are quite a few shows that I
look forward to and this is one of them. I did try those MSG boards at FX,
it froze every single time.
Will post episode recap after it airs.

Hey there group!  My partner chemikalman and I have come up with a few icebreaker questions.  Feel free to answer all, some or none.  We would just like to hear everyone's honest opinion.

1. How did you find out about "The Shield?"

2. What made you decide to watch "The Shield?"

3. How far do you think cops should be able to go to get the truth?

4. How far do you think cable TV should be able to go in terms of language, nudity, sexual content?  Should it have different standards that broadcast network TV?

5. What do you want to ask the guru sitting cross-legged at the top of the highest mountain?

6. What other cop or law-related shows do you like?

7. Do you have any experience with or in the criminal justice system?

8. Most of us know Michael Chiklis as "The Commish" and he was even in the comedy "Daddio".  What do you think of Michael's portrayal of corrupt cop Vic Mackey?

9. Reading and knowing all about police brutality and police corruption and now seeing "The Shield"  what do you really think about the law enforcement agency?  Do you think cops think they are above the law?

10. What in a nutshell is your view of the criminal justice system?

Enjoy answering!

Thought I would start things off in the group by discussing what's
going on with censorship and TV these days. Are cable stations
subject to different rules than broadcast TV, like NBC, etc.? I'm
not talking about pay channels like HBO. I guess the reason I'm
asking is that I was pretty shocked at what was allowed in the
first ep of "The Shield." I've heard Dennis Franz say "prick" and
"asshole" on NYPD Blue, but I've never heard anything like "blow
job", such as we heard on Shield (not to mention the hilarious
scene where the vic's sister had her head against the cop's
privates while she sobbed and the uniforms were restraining
their laughter). Blue was a ground-breaker of sorts and it looks
like Shield is digging down deeper than anthing I've seen on TV
so far.

I also would like to welcome our first member, jtcujo (i.e., other
than the owner, yours truly, and the moderator of this list,
irishkittyvixen). Irishkittyvixen, or vix for short, is working on some
icebreaker questions for new members. They probably won't be
ready until after yahoo finishes its "maintenance." You don't have
to respond to all the questions or any of them, jt--it's up to you.
Anyway, we're hopeful as more eps of the show are aired our
membership will increase. Vix, didn't you say the premiere of
Shield was the most-watched premier of all time?
