TA about those episodes. He was phenomenal in
them and was completely deserving of the emmy he won.
I think there may be a pretty good chance he'll be
back, because they always leave it open for him to
return.
certainly did think that he was going to admit
to doing it!!! Btw, the John Laroquette episodes are
my all time favorite. He's a great actor, it was a
great role and I hope they bring him back again.
was surprised to see him because the only thing
I've ever seen him on is "Who's the Boss?" It's kind
of hard to picture him in a dramatic role. but, even
though I didn't see it, I heard that he was really good
in the recent cable remake of 12 angry men.

I really enjoyed last night's show, even though I
was looking forward to some more Bobby and Lindsay
stuff. But I could understand how it wouldn't fit in
with what went on. Also, I like the idea of the show
being gradual with it and not shoving it into our faces
all at once.

The trial was really intense. I
couldn't believe the levels that Ellenor and Eugene
stooped to. Or were they stooping? That's the thing about
this show--there are so many grays and not very many
black and whites. Even though I would *not* want to
have been in the brother's position, I could see that
Eugene's questioning of him was fairly plausible. I mean,
stranger things have happened than a brother killing his
sister for the inheritance money! And I have to admit
that I kind of laughed when Eugene got whacked on the
head. Not because it was funny or anything (and the
actor did a great job of pretending he was in
excrutiating pain), but because it was just so unexpected.

Also (yeah, I know I'm rambling), was anyone else
completely shocked by what they thought Fogleman was going
to say when the trial was over and the evidence was
closed? I thought he was going to admit to the whole
thing (kind of like what john larroquette's character
did at his first trial)!
thought last night's episode was very good
also. I thought the verdict would be 'guilty'. I was
shocked when Eugene was hit w/the cane. And I think he
did act in character by not having a confrontation.
Ellenor, my 2nd fav character, is a bit like a loose
cannon! She does say what's on her mind, does as she
pleases and sometimes, gets away with it. I think this
will cause continuing friction b/t her and Helen but
don't know how it will effect Helen's relationship
w/Bobby and the others. Im sure Helen and Lindsey will
have a big yelling match about the same. Was
dissappointed that nothing was said or done about Lindsey and
Bobby's relationship b/t those two. Guess that will be
addressed later. And besides, Lindsey was too busy throwing
stuff at Ellenor! Too much like a soap to address it
every episode?
was shocked and horrified to see Tony Danza in
the previews for next week's episode. Has he appeared
in the show in this role before? I'm guessing
probably not. Based on his past body of work, I don't know
if I can take Tony Danza seriously in a dramatic
performance. I'm sure they're just trying to draw new people
in with a recognizable face, but I think they should
have found someone else for the part.
onight's episode was very good. I thought
Ellenor and Eugene created a lot of doubt in a strong
presentation, but in the end, I really expected their client to
be found guilty. It was a real shame that Ellenor
decided to put her firm's credibility on the line with
the DA's office to get her client off the hook, and
it will be interesting to see if this comes back to
haunt them. I know Lindsay said she would go to work on
Helen, but I haven't seen enough episodes to quite
understand the dynamics between Helen and the rest of the
firm, so I guess the resulting effects of this case
will remain to be seen.

The argument and near
fight in the office was pretty intense. I'm beginning
to think Ellenor lets her emotions get ahold of her
too easily, and she seems prone to flying off the
handle and saying things without fully considering the
consequences. Is this an accurate assessment?

That was
out of control when the victim's dad hit Eugene in
the face with his cane. I would have liked to have
seen a confrontation about it, but maybe that would
have been out of character for Eugene. Anyway, he did
feel guilty about accusing the brother with the hard
"Plan B" angle, so maybe that's why he didn't push the
issue.

I think I'm finally figuring out the character
names, so I should be able to follow the stuff you guys
are saying here a little better now.
ugene will always be first in my heart! But you gotta love Ellenor.....she's
awesome too. Plus I love the actress too. Was soooo thrilled she won the Emmy.
Let's put Ellenor a very close 2nd!
answered most of the questions.......here
goes:

1. Favorite Character: Tie b/t Eugene &
Ellenor

2. Shocking Verdict: Lindsey's Law Prof

3.
Dont know...

4. Humorous

5. Eugene
definitely!!!

6. b

7. Yes, I think they can explore that
w/o turning it into a soap.

8. Even to I
didn't answer C...my two cents worth, Helen just flat
out bugs me...don't watch ally, so no desire for that
relationship either. Just like the chemistry b/t Bobby and
Lindsey.
ey new members!

Whenever you have time,
go to message #2 on the board. There are some
questions about different aspects of the show-- Of course,
they don't really cover everything, but it's a start,
I guess. Answer as few or as many as you like!
hanks for the welcome! Im online pretty often,
so hope to get you know you better and to have some
fun discussing the show. BTW, Im cannot wait until
Sunday! I missed it last week. Can't wait to see where
the 'kiss' leads........
ust posted some show-related links on the links
page. Check them out--they're pretty good. If you have
any more to add, please feel free to do so. If
they're not related to the show, that's okay, but make
sure you indicate that.
on't the way the picture and message are set up make it look like Dylan
McDermott is welcoming you to the club? That wasn't done on purpose but it is
kind of funny. Maybe I'm just easily amused.
don't really have too many cases to choose
from. The few episodes I've seen have focused on the
murder/self-defense case where Lindsay's professor was convicted.
There was also one where a kid was with another kid who
stole a bike, and I think it was supposed to be that
woman's first real case or something. There's the one
with the S&M porno tapes and the head in the bag with
Ellenor's internet friend. The only other one I remember is
the one with the Iranian woman. Anyway, those are
what I have to choose from because those are the only
ones I can think of right now.

I'd say the one
with the head in the bag would be the most
controversial. I think the judge is a pervert because he seemed
like he wanted to watch the video tapes for his own
reasons (if you know what I mean), not just to see
whether they could be admitted as evidence. The fact that
one of the lawyers had a prior relationship (I'm not
sure of the extent of it) with the suspect is an
unusual twist. I guess I'd say that this is the most
interesting case so far. It's hard to decide whether the guy
is guilty or not.

As for the matter of the
professor shooting the stalker, I think they had to find
him guilty. One shot, or maybe even two, might have
been defensible, but five shots was excessive
considering that the guy wasn't directly threatening their
lives at that specific time. I think the incident
crossed the line and became more than self defense,
despite the testimony that the quivering trigger finger
could have made the gun go off repeatedly. I didn't buy
it.

With regard to the case of the Iranian woman, I could
see how the jury reached its decision, but in the
end, I think the judge was right to throw out their
verdict. I like how they brought out the ethical dilemma
for the lawyer with the way he had to separate his
personal feelings for her from the job he had to do for
his cousin.

I'm probably forgetting some other
cases from those few shows, but those were the main
ideas I came away from them with.
er speech was cool because she was just so not
jaded at all. She expressed her admiration for the
other nominees and said that she wanted everyone to
sign the autograph book she brought. Then (if I
remember correctly), she thanked all the people you would
expect her to thank (family, people on the show), and at
the end she said that the award was "for all the fat
girls." She was very sweet, funny, and genuinely excited
that she won.

The most controversial case? I
don't know. There's always serious ethical dilemmas
involved, and I can't think of one that really stands out
(but I'm also kinda tired, so that may be part of
it.). One of my favorite cases was from last season--a
young woman was found dead, her body mutilated. A
serial killer on the loose was known to kill women of
this description in this way. However, there were
variations on the method used on this woman, so it was
thought that the serial killer didn't do it. Instead,
they arrested a doctor who worked at the morgue and
had done autopsies on the bodies of the women the SK
had killed (meaning he knew how the serial killer did
his work). The doctor happened to be the young
woman's married lover. And if I'm not mistaken, she was
also the family's babysitter. Anyway, Donnell and the
firm took on the case, and even though the guy didn't
do it (I was convinced he didn't), there was a lot
of evidence against him, kind of like what's
happening now with the guy accused of decapitating that
girl. Throughout the trial, the doctor's wife seemed
very supportive (as far as I remember)of him. Even
though his lawyers tried everything they could to get
him acquitted, he was found guilty of the murder. And
right after they read the verdict, they showed his wife
sitting behind him, and she had this very chilling,
sinister smile on her face. Nothing as far as I know has
developed since then, but just from that smile (and it was
creepy) it was pretty obvious that she had either done it
or had it done in order to set her husband up as
revenge for having an affair.

Sorry that was so
long. Anyway, out of the time you've been watching,
what are the cases you think are the best or most
controversial?
watch WAY too much TV. It's not so bad during
the summer because I've got a lot of other stuff to
do. After the baseball season is over, though, and
the new TV season fires up, I'm at home a lot. That's
not so bad because at least I'm not blowing a lot of
money if I'm just at home. Anyway, over the years, I've
watched various shows, and I want to know what is
happening in each of them, so I have to watch a lot of TV
to keep up on all of the storylines.
My favorite
shows are "The Simpsons," "X-Files," "Melrose Place,"
"NYPD Blue," "King of the Hill," "Dawson's Creek,"
"Beverly Hills 90210," "Party Of Five," "Millenium," and
"Dallas" (the reruns are on everyday on TNN). I also watch
a lot of sports, as well as "WCW Monday Nitro" and
"WWF RAW Is WAR," which run at the same time on
Mondays. I usually have to fire up the VCR because several
shows run simultaneously (like the wrestling shows),
and it's not as time consuming to watch a taped show
since I can skip the commercials. I don't always watch
all of these shows, but I try to stay somewhat
current on what's going on for each of them.

As
for why I started to watch "The Practice," I think I
mentioned before that I don't really have anything that I
regularly watch during the Sunday night 10pm - 11pm time
slot. I flipped to it a few weeks ago, and it seemed to
be interesting. It is very well written and well
acted, so I decided to watch it again, and I think that
I will add it to my regular TV rotation. I have to
admit that I also think Lindsay is very attractive, so
that's another good reason to watch it.

I don't
really like to watch awards shows, so I did not watch
the Emmys. What was Camryn Mannheim's speech about,
or what made it stand out from the other
speeches?

What is the most controversial case or subject that
they've taken on in the show? Did you agree or disagree
with the way it was portrayed? How was the matter
resolved?
irst of all, it's not pathetic. It took me
forever to figure out what was going on. Same with ER. It
took me forever to learn all the character's
names!

Eleanor is the heavyset woman at the firm. I like how
she's always backtalking the judges (there was one
episode last season where she was thrown into jail for
being in contempt. Of course, everything she said was
right on the money. The judge was a complete jerk), and
how she seems to really care about her clients. Not
that the other lawyers don't care about their clients
(well, none of them do all the time), but I notice it
more in her. Also, Camryn Mannheim, the actress who
plays her, is just excellent. Did you see the Emmys
this year? She won for best supporting actress in a
drama, and she had the best acceptance speech of the
whole show.

Eugene is the black lawyer with the
dry sense of humor. Would like to know more about his
son and ex wife. Actually, I'd like to know more
about all the characters.

This is the only
lawyer drama I've ever gotten into. As far as other
dramas go, I like ER, but I don't watch it as regularly
as I used to. I love Cupid, a new show on ABC on
Saturday nights, but that's kind of in between drama and
comedy. I've watched The Practice from the beginning, but
I haven't seen every episode, and I don't tape it.
Maybe I'll start taping it though; there's always
something that I miss! It's by far the most serious show I
watch. Also like things like Third Rock from the Sun,
Daria, Pinky and The Brain, Sifl and Olly, Simpsons,
South Park--shows that for the most part are not
serious at all!

What about you? What other stuff
do you watch? Why did you start watching The
Practice?
ince I don't know much about the show, I'm
hoping you can clarify some of the things from your
message so I'll know what you're referring
to.

Which character is Eleanor? Why is she your favorite
main character?

You said you wanted to know
more about Eugene. Which character is he? (I know it's
pathetic, but I'm sure I'll pick this stuff up soon
enough.)

Is this your favorite show, or just your favorite
lawyer drama? If it's your favorite, why? What other
shows do you watch? Have you watched "The Practice"
from the beginning?
don't really know. I'm sure that even after
watching this show for just a few weeks, you've noticed
that this show has so much going on that it's kind of
hard to find just one or two things to talk about.
Discussion could go a couple of ways, I guess. First
way--everyone just comments on the show or analyzes as they see
fit. Second way--someone (not necessarily me) picks a
topic or topics of discussion and we talk about that. I
can see using a combination of the two. Because even
if we start out with designated topics, there is a
good chance they'll just lead into discussion about
whatever.

Also, since there's a chatroom here, we
might want to think about scheduling chats every once
in a while.

I've been going around to
relevant message boards and places like that, trying to
recruit members. Hope some more people show up soon! Then
it will be easier to decide things like discussion
format and chat times. If you know anyone online who
likes the show send them this way. By the way, glad
you're here!
'm wondering if there is any set format you want
to use for discussing the show after each episode.
Will it just be a general discussion set up by the
club founder asking questions for the rest of us (or
just me for now) to reply to, or are there certain
things we should make note of to discuss? For example,
when my friends and I discuss Melrose Place (which we
watch as a comedy), we make note of the line of the
night (funniest one-liner or monologue), funniest
situation of the night, horrible acting performances, and
outfit of the night (we also watch that show for the
women that are on it). I guess I'm asking if there is
anything specific I should talk about when giving my
analysis of upcoming episodes. Any comments?
'm not going to be able to answer the questions
about the show very well because I just started
watching it about three weeks ago. I didn't really have
any other shows to watch in that time slot, so I
started watching it because I had heard good things about
it. To be honest, I don't really know many of the
characters' names, so if someone could post a brief
commentary about who they are, that would be
cool.
Anyway, here it goes:
1. Favorite character: Male -
the bald African-American lawyer / Female -
Lindsay
2. Shocking verdicts: I haven't watched long enough
to comment.
3. Defense should have lost or won: I
haven't watched long enough to comment.
4. Head in the
bag: I thought it was funny. TV shouldn't be scared to
be graphic when it needs to be.
5. I would like
to see the show explore the personal life of the new
receptionist more in depth. She's quirky, and it'd probably be
interesting and entertaining.
6. Lindsay and Bobby should:
c. forget the whole thing. It'd be better if they
had a Mulder and Scully (X-Files) type relationship
based on mutual respect.
7. (skipped based on the
answer to 6)
8. If "Ally" is Ally McBeal (I think I
remember seeing that the two shows intermixed one Monday
night last season), then definitely her. As far as why
I answered "c" to #6, I think a relationship
between Bobby and Lindsay would create unnecessary
tension in the office. I watch enough soap-opera type
shows (Melrose Place, Dallas), and I watch them because
they're more like comedies. I don't want this show to be
funny.
believe Eleanor's name is spelled, well, like
that. Not like how I have it in the previous
message.

So, The Practice is being pre empted to show "David
and Lisa." While this movie looks just lovely, I
don't know if it's a good idea to preempt your most
popular show that just happened to win a Best drama emmy
in order to show a movie.Maybe Oprah scared them. Or
something.
ere are my replies to my own
questions:

1. favorite main character--Ellenor. favorite
recurring character--the insane city councilman, as played
by the brilliant John Larroquette.
2. I was
pretty shocked when Larroquette's character managed to
not get convicted two times. I was also surprised
when the judge overturned the jury's decision in the
Iranian woman's case. I wasn't aware that the judge could
do that. Maybe only in civil cases.
3. have to
get back to you on this one...
4. disgusting that
it was there, funny when they found it.
5. I'd
like to know more about Eugene.
6. While I realize
that b or c are probably more likely to happen, I'd
like to see them go for a. It could lead to all kinds
of interesting stories.
7. I think that this show
has enough going for it that it will never become a
complete soap opera.
k, here are a few questions to help get
discussion going. Answer 1, a few, or all of them as you
wish.

1. Who's your favorite character on the show?
2.
Which verdicts shocked you the most?
3. When did
you think the defense definitely should have lost
when they won? Or won when they lost?
4. Did you
find the head in the bag completely disgusting or
rather humorous?
5. fill in the blank. I would like
to see the show explore the personal life of _______
more in depth.
6. Do you think Lindsay and Bobby
should...
a. have a relationship b. revert to their
clandestine office affair c. forget the whole thing.
7. If
you answered a or b, do you think they can accomplish
either of these without turning the show into a soap
opera?
8. If you answered c, why? (just kidding). Would you
rather see Bobby with Helen or with Ally? Or with no
one?

OK, I think that's enough for now.
