Did you happen to see Lee Majors in "According to Jim" a week or so ago?
He was setting up on his judge seat in a white suit playing god. He was
passing judgement on James Belushi for his mist deeds. lol

that covers two weeks at a time.

Years ago my parents had a summer placeon the Great Sacadanga Lake
which is about an hour NW of Albany in Fulton County. The pictures
were not only beautiful, but they reminded meso much of that area.

Redwolf, you are so right, we do live in a beautiful country. I haven't see
much
of it in person (but dream of doing so someday), so thank you Cyn Ann for
sharing those pictures.

I've always told friends and family that I'd rather see the US first before
other countries. I went to Spain when I was in the 10th grade. After that trip,
I decided I'd rather stay in the USA. LOL!
We were going to move to Albany, but someone else got the position on a
hardship. I was so excited to live in the state my mother spoke of so fondly,
and be nearer to my cousins etc.

The only other country I have been to is Canada, which when you live less then 20
miles from it, this takes in about a mile of river to cross, I hope the
Canadains on here will forgive me,but in many ways it's not much differant then
here.

I have been to Cornwall just across the bridge, Montreal, Gramby which is a
ways further then Quebec City, and in 96, drove the almost whole way of Ontario
with a friend who was moving to Michigan, 14 hours from Saranac Lake to Rockford
MI, and can you believe it we are still friends LOL.

I guess I do like to let people know what there is here, since some people
think the only place in New York is New York City or nothing is worth seeing
pass Albany...since I was in my perteens anyone I wrote I'd throw in some
information about here. We are steeped in history, and historical people.

The hotel were I go for Trek Meetings, also sold Time shares...
While waiting for the meeting to start I'd sit in the bar/dinning/ what have you
area the meetings are in the Kate Smith room, ( which did you know when she or
Irving Berlin sang God Bless America the money they were paid went to the Girl
Scouts, the Boy Scouts, and Girl Guides... check here

http://parlorsongs.com/bios/berlin/iberlin.php )

and if someone asked what there was to see I'd list all the things not only in
Lake Placid, but if they wanted to drive a two hour trip around the town; where
John Browns farm was, where to go for rock climbing, the best museums including
Fredrick Remingtons,If they enjoyed stepping back in time the neatest little
dinner that was not only done in pink with black and white tiled floor, but each
table had a mini jutebox, and pix of performers on the walls;on the ladies room
door was Marlin Monroe and the mens had Clark Gable.

I live 30 miles from a University where Kirk Daugles, Pete Duel, and Viggo
Morestine ( sorry for bad spelling) went to.

OK I will admit it I'm proud of my little part fo the world.

Blessing
Cyn Ann

Hi Folks,

I'm a Robert Conrad fan for decades and recently joined the yahoo group for him
last week. They informed me of a two hour radio show he does live every Thursday
at 3pm Pacific time on Cable Radio Network. They also re-broadcast it several
times after that during the weekend. Also, they post the link online at their
website for the last two shows so people can listen when they want. My cable TV
provider doesn't carry it, so I listen online live. They also have video web cam
of the studio so we can see Robert and others. They take calls with a 1-800
number. I called last Thursday night and spoke to him. I was the first caller.

If you go to http://www.crntalk.com/default.aspx

and then click on "Hosts" in the list on the left side,

and then scroll down to Robert Conrad under "R",

you'll see the live broadcast time and other times it's broadcast on the weekend
and what CRN channel all this occurs on.

Back at the homepage, if you click on "show archives" on the left side, see "The
Robert Conrad Show" listed, and then click on "This Week" under it, you'll see
the format he takes, and I'm the first caller around t=9 minutes or so.

Robert Conrad also has guests. He's had Jon Voight, Melissa Gilbert, Mike
Farrell, etc. I haven't been listening for long. I did listen to the two archive
shows that are available, which gets updated every week.

Robert said he'll have Lee Majors as a guest on the radio show "in a couple of
weeks". Sometimes, guests take calls from people who phone in. Since he said a
couple of weeks, sounds like it won't be this Thursday, but I'm listening every
week now anyway, and last week was my first week. Since it's on at 3pm Pacific,
that's 6pm here in the east in Massachusetts, and I'm home from work, and it's
dinner time.

So, FYI if you want to listen and hear and/or talk to Lee Majors.

Question for Mr. Briles: Would you like to be a guest on the Conrad show ? Would
be great to hear you.

Thanks and regards,

Desiree

Dear Desiree:

Thanks for your kind thought. It would be nice. I've never met Robert
Conrad, but saw him all the time since Big Valley was shot on the same lot
as "Wild West."

However, I don't think the producers of the radio show, or their audiences
for that matter, would have much interest in my being a participant.

Again my thanks. Home all is well with you and the rest of all the "Valley
Dwellers."

Regards:

Charles Briles

My 4th was quiet, missed the fireworks, but have a chance to catch some this

50 yrs ago we had V/P Richard Nixon. The Queen of England and Prime Minister of
Canada at the opening ceramonies. In 1969 I was one of many Girl Scouts and Boy
Scouts who helped at the 10th Anniv. where we had President Nixon and Prime
Minister Trudeaue, both gave very nice speaches, lol But I never got to see them

I was on First Aid tent duty and BOY let me tell you once thier heicopters

I saved a young girls life while I was getting more water her little sister
came to me( it was well advertized any one in a Scout uniform was there to help)
and said her sister was in "bad pain",I couldn't get her up so I got a gentleman
to help me get her to the tent. the nurse looked her over and made a call for a

We can all listen online...that's what I do. My cable TV provider does not carry
cable radio network. They don't carry any digital audio beyond the music
channels. Very common. Most folks on the Robert Conrad show who call in are
listening online. I provided all that info and directions on how to access in my
other post.

I'll be calling again this Thursday, and will mention Chuck. Robert Conrad will
no doubt give us an update on Lee Majors as well.

Dear Chuck,

Interesting that it was shot on the same lot. I beg to differ with you. I think
folks would be very interested in hearing you. They loved the Melissa Gilbert
interview and what went on with the Little House on the Prairie set. The
audience is made up of folks like me who really appreciate the classic TV shows
and veteran actors. This radio show is the Robert Conrad show, and people call
in and ask him questions, but when he has guests, people get really interested.
While we are listening there is a "paltalk chatroom" and live web cam as I
mentioned, and you should have seen the reaction in the chatroom when Robert
mentioned he's going to have on Lee Majors in a few weeks. He also mentioned
he'll have Tom Selleck.

So, don't sell yourself short, Chuck. YOU RATE !!!!! :-) :-) You certainly do
with us and you do with these other audiences as well. We're all the same kind
of fans, and everyone is very interested. Robert is amazed at the outpouring for
him. Heck, he probably figured people forgot about him since he's been off the
stage enjoying the 9 kids, 6 of whom are married at this point, and enjoying the
19 grandkids....so far 19.

It's a really easy going radio program. As I mentioned below, you can go online
and listen to some of a show to hear the format. I was the first caller, got
right on, and will call back this Thursday. There are lots of people who call.
They extended Robert's program to two hours due to the demand.

I'm also at Glenn Ford's website. As we know, Glenn passed away in August 2006.
It's a long story, but I know the family, and was invited to Glenn's home in
Beverly Hills about a year after he passed away. We had lunch and a visit for a
few hours. I got email from Glenn's son, Peter Ford yesterday who asked me to
give Robert a message, knows him, and I'll do that when I call this Thursday and
also forward the email to Robert and they can correspond. Robert has an email
address with the station and reads EVERYTHING !! He says if people write, they
deserve to have it read.

I tell ya what, Chuck, I'll mention you during my call and email you here on the
response.

Dwellers."

Subject: [The Big Valley] Lee Majors coming as guest on radio, and question
for Mr. Briles

Hi Folks,

I'm a Robert Conrad fan for decades and recently joined the yahoo group for
him last week. They informed me of a two hour radio show he does live every
Thursday at 3pm Pacific time on Cable Radio Network. They also re-broadcast
it several times after that during the weekend. Also, they post the link
online at their website for the last two shows so people can listen when
they want. My cable TV provider doesn't carry it, so I listen online live.
They also have video web cam of the studio so we can see Robert and others.
They take calls with a 1-800 number. I called last Thursday night and spoke
to him. I was the first caller.

If you go to http://www.crntalk.com/default.aspx

and then click on "Hosts" in the list on the left side,

and then scroll down to Robert Conrad under "R",

you'll see the live broadcast time and other times it's broadcast on the
weekend and what CRN channel all this occurs on.

Back at the homepage, if you click on "show archives" on the left side, see
"The Robert Conrad Show" listed, and then click on "This Week" under it,
you'll see the format he takes, and I'm the first caller around t=9 minutes
or so.

Robert Conrad also has guests. He's had Jon Voight, Melissa Gilbert, Mike
Farrell, etc. I haven't been listening for long. I did listen to the two
archive shows that are available, which gets updated every week.

Robert said he'll have Lee Majors as a guest on the radio show "in a couple
of weeks". Sometimes, guests take calls from people who phone in. Since he
said a couple of weeks, sounds like it won't be this Thursday, but I'm
listening every week now anyway, and last week was my first week. Since it's
on at 3pm Pacific, that's 6pm here in the east in Massachusetts, and I'm
home from work, and it's dinner time.

So, FYI if you want to listen and hear and/or talk to Lee Majors.

Question for Mr. Briles: Would you like to be a guest on the Conrad show ?
Would be great to hear you.

Thanks and regards,

Desiree

Dear Girl Howdy:

The story is correct. I did do shows as you mentioned - it was too late to
return to Big Valley because they knew that I could be called to duty with only
a 24-hour notice - I never told that to the other shows I would later do. Had I
done that they would not have hired me. Why? Because there was no way I could
promise I'd be able to finish filming.

After the '95 heart attack, I'm now uninsurable for any work that would last
more than 3-days. That's another career stopper.

As the Drs. told me "Your career is over, sorry."

Perhaps Mr. Briles underestimates the interest. I was just looking at
speculation among Big Valley fans at imbd.com as to why Eugene left the show.
)
The answers given, right or wrong, were:
   1. The actor portraying Eugene, Charles Briles, had to do his army stint and
therefore had to leave the cast, iirc.
2.However, according to the IMDB, Charles Briles appeared on several tv shows
in 1966. 1967. 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1971. So I have my doubts about the Army
story. I think that they just let him go from the Big Valley because they had
too many cast members.
   3. He went off to college. His roommate was Richie Cunningham's brother
"Chuck" ;-)
Has anyone heard anything more about the making of a Big Valley movie?

Girl Howdy,

Please don't knock the American Health Care system which provides the finest
health care in the world. There are many people who "CHOOSE" to come to this
country for their health care problems to the best institutions on the globe,
like the Mayo Clinic where the King of Jordan came for his cancer treatements,
and to a hospital in New York City where opera singer Pavarotti came for his
cancer operation.

Anyone can walk into any hospital emergency ward in this country and be treated
without paying. This can be a financial burden on states, too, and is a big
topic of discussion these days. Here in Massachusetts, our former Gov. Mitt
Romney signed a law a few years ago that allows competition amongst the private
sector insurance companies and has everyone insured. President George W. Bush
pushed for and signed the Medicare Part D prescription drug plan which provides
prescription drugs for seniors at a much reduced rate. My parents save a great
deal of money on this plan.

There are other health care reforms that will be debated in Congress in the
coming months. It's a major issue.

I don't think you can "explain American healthcare" by only citing Mr. Briles'
issue. In the entertainment industry, actors are insured, and if they can't do
their work for some reason, either an accident, or illness, or being drafted,
etc, what is the television production supposed to do with the actor missing,
especially if it's a lead actor, what happens to the program and all those who
are employed as crew and set decorators and directors and staffers, etc. This
type of insurance is all part of the legal system and contract obligations
between actors and television productions and studios.

In general, those of us out here in the masses are not denied work, because we
aren't doing that type of work that requires being insured. You're choosing the
acting profession as your standard to gripe about the American Health Care
system, and that's not correct.

When it comes to Mr. Briles' issues, that is one example of the nutty things
that can happen with bureaucracies. There are many.

I want to emphasize to you that every citizen has access to medicine here, too.
They are not thrown out or refused by a hospital ER. In this country we can
choose our own doctors. We aren't waiting for months trying to get life-saving
operations like they do in Canada and many European countries, of which Austria
where you live may be included. Also, you aren't getting this free. You are
paying through the nose for it through your taxes. I have a cousin who is now
living in Amsterdam working there for some years, and she is paying 52% in
taxes, and she's not some CEO of a company. She's a human resources worker
making an average salary. Also, the European economies are suffering
dramatically, because they are so burdened by the expense of a national
healthcare system. Europe's unemployment is high, because Government spending
for this kind of program is high. Social engineering and cradle-to-grave care
hasn't worked and never will. It was in the news recently that 1 out of 3 in
France under the age of 30 is unemployed. Here, if you need an operation, you
get it. You don't have to wait months and months or be refused, because of your
age.

My Dad was born in Germany and immigrated here in the 1950's. We have relatives
there, and some have been refused care with needed operations, because they are
in their 70's or 80. The won't provide them with the needed care, because they
figure they've lived their lives and will have to cope with ailments at this
point. That's not the system I want. Europe can keep it. In the United States,
life is valued. It's in our country's Constitution, "Life, Liberty, and the
Pursuit of Happiness", something we were just reminded of on Independence Day,
July 4th. In this country, if you are strong enough and healthy enough to handle
an operation, you will have it.

An example is my mother. She will be age 90 next March. In August 2006, at age
86, she underwent major surgery for diverticulitis. When you get older, sacks
can grow off your colon, and sometimes things get stuck in those sacks, and with
her that happened, and she had an abscess in one which is basically a lousy
infection. She needed major surgery, a sigmoid colectomy they called it, where
they go in and cut out that portion of the colon with the sacks and then put the
two other ends back together. In her case also, the abscess had perforated her
colon wall and stuck to one of her ovaries and was festering. So, in addition to
taking the piece of the colon they took the ovary and the falopian tube. We were
told afterwards, if she hadn't had this surgery, she surely would have died from
the infection, because it would have eventually gotten into her bloodstream and
spread to other organs, and she would not have survived it. Had my mother lived
in another country and was waiting for months and months for this operation, she
would not be alive today. Or, she would have been outright refused the surgery
because she was age 86 at that time, and in other countries she would have been
considered too old and they don't want to waste the health care on her even if
she is physically able to handle the operation.

I'll take the American Health care system over all.

I am infuriated anytime the United States is run down in any way, and it's
usually because people just don't know and understand. I've read some of the
Euopean media online, and when my cousin in Amsterdam visits here, she brings
back newspapers, and I know the European press does not like the United States
and what I read in those papers is fiction. So, Europeans don't have the facts
about this country and our systems.

When I've gone to Germany to visit relatives, I have also visited Luxemboug,
Denmark, Switzerland, Lichenstein, Austria, etc. In Austria, I did enjoy seeing
Innsbruck and the Olympic village from decades ago and I could still hear the
cow bells with Franz Klammer doing his downhill run. We enjoyed watching on
television. We also enjoyed Vienna and Salzburg and toured where The Sound of
Music was filmed.

Every country has it's plus and minus side. Everyone can improve. I'll take
American democracy any day, and that's my choice. This is a free enterprise,
market driven, capitalistic society, and I love it. If you work hard, you can
succeed. The only limitations are in your own mind. That's why so many from
around the world want to come here, especially those from eastern block
countries. I choose more individual freedom over government control. I choose
private sector choices over government intervention and national control. And, I
choose America's health care system over any other, and I'm grateful for it.

Regards, Desiree

Just to be clear, the answers I posted were written by Big Valley viewers who
posted at imdp. Members of our group know the answer to the question, "Whatever
happened to Eugene?"
As for your insurance issue, I can only wish that you lived where I live. Every
citizen has coverage and access to one of the finest medical systems on the
planet. It is unimaginable here that one could be denied work for being
"uninsurable". I am sorry you've had to suffer this. When trying to explain
American healthcare, I have often shared the story you told us about
MetLifetrying to cut your coverage after you received $0.05 cents for the airing
of a 1967 rerun of Petticoat Junction (which was $0.02 cents, after federal and
state taxes). MetLife argued thatyou were not disabled if you could make that
kind of money. People think I make this stuff up because it is too absurd to be

Dear Girl Howdy:

The uninsurable refers to deals with the insurance required for film or
television programs. Recall the tragedy of John Ritter. Disney had spent of 80
million dollars to prepare for his new television series. During the middle of
the first season he died. Disney attempted to continue the show with James
Garner, but it never really went anywhere. Because the cast and program were
insured, Disney was able to recoup a large sum of money invested in getting the
program off the ground.

Some years ago Carey told me that his father (Richard Long) was really afraid
that he would not be insured for doing "Big Valley" because of his heart
condition. But the insurance company agreed to insure him and thus he was able
to do the show. My heart condition is far worse then Richards - so insurance
companies would not want to take that chance. Not that I'd ever be considered to
do a series or what's called a requiring role in one.

Otherwise my wife and I have a good personal insurance policy for ourselves.

   Mr. Briles,
Sorry to confuse two different issues. I associated the "you are uninsurable"
issues with the MetLife story you posted some months ago, which has stuck with
me. A relative of mine with MS, was afraid to apply for disability insurance
for the very reason that she hoped she would be able to one day use her hands

for $0.05 cents was unimaginable.

   This is for evverybody:

After reading all the E-Mails concerning weather Fox is going to release
additional seasons of BV or not brought a lot of things to mind - most
disturbing is all the frustration that occurs when people want to do the right
thing and are basically punished for it. A majority of the group had the
opportunity to video tape Encore Westerns and get an uncut, commercial free
version of all the episodes. And, if kept for personal use - well you've got all
there is to get. For those that were not able to get Encore via cable or other
means were left with trying to obtain the DVDs or the older versions as shown on
Hallmark which were cut to threads. As a mater of fact I went into a Hallmark
store and ask if they'd mind my going through there card rack and editing out
various words or parts of the art work. The look on sales clerks faces were
horrific along with the blurted out words "what, are you crazy?" No, I said, I'd
just like to return the favor of what
Hallmark has done to my work on their TV channel. What's fair for you should
be fair for me, right? They didn't get it. And that's the problem. The majority
of people just don't get it. And, no matter how hard one tries to explain it,
they still don't get it, or perhaps just don't want to get it.

How can the problem be solved - well, it's a conundrum. And the only solution
to a conundrum is conjecture - or just an educated guess. And my guess is that
Fox will probably never release any additional seasons of BV. They probably
won't even sell a franchise for another company to release it, even if they are
given a percentage of the profits.

As for commentary added to a DVD by those of us still around, well that I know
will never happen. Why, because of the cost of production and the fact that
residuals for programs like that must now be paid in perpetuity.

By the way, old film can not be reused - unless you want to make a lot of
guitar picks.

What you may have heard is the term "short-ends. " Standard 35MM motions
picture camera film magazines hold 1,000-feet of film. The 3rd assistant camera
crew keeps track of how much film is left after each scenes take. If the scene
to be shot is longer than the film in the camera they reload with a fresh
magazine. Some of the magazines at the end of the day only have perhaps 50 to a
100 feet of film left. When the mags are sent to the lab, the technicians
maintain the excess footage and it is sold as a "short-end." I know because when
shooting stock shots for TV's ODD COUPLE and another show long forgotten, we
used these short ends. Some people even bought them for use in their 35MM still
cameras for a very inexpensive amount.

And, I've only seen one blooper from BV. I'm sure if they'd save more we would
have seen them by now. And to tell you how "tight" companies can be - I was
watching one of Dick Clark's shows hosted by Ed McMahon about the first breaks
people got who would later become stars. They showed an old "Ice Blue Secret"
commercial with Linda Gray playing the bride. Well, in that commercial I was the
groom. I should have received a small amount for using the commercial on a
rebroadcast. I wasn't and when I called Clark's company to ask if I could buy a
copy of the show for my self to have a copy of the commercial - I was turned
down. "We don't do that!" was the answer. So, no money made and no copy that I
was willing to pay for. After a while you run out of "cheeks" to turn in this
business.

In fact, because of my disability (V-Tach or A.K.A. Sudden Cardiac Death
Syndrom - only 20% of my heart works.) I will probably never be able to do film
work again. The reason: Insurance. Carey Long told me that his dad was really
worried that he might not have been able to play Jarrod because of his heart
condition which today would have made him uninsurable. I'm not legally allowed
to earn any money (except funds connected with movies and TV programs that have
already been made. That's called intellectual property and MetLife, who carries
my disability insurance can't touch that. But, believe me they have tried. Three
years ago I received a check for 5-cents. (A rerun of a Petticoat Junction
episode made in '67.) That was the gross amount. The Feds took 2-cents and the
state took 1-cent, my net profit was 2-cents and MetLife called me wanting to
know how I'd made that nickle - "because if I can earn money like that then I'm
not disabled." (Now remember
MetLife pays over 125- million a year to use "Snoopy" as their logo - but
they'll spend 40-minutes on a long distance phone call to pummel me into
admitting that I'd work for that nickle. I told them that if I were a
shareholder of MetLife somebody would be getting fired.) All disabilities moneys
will stop should I live to 65. What I'll do then is attempt to earn the year I
lost due to the military in order to qualify for my pension through the Screen
Actors Guild. So, that's the personal dilemma that I'm in. I did before and now
again offer the packets of signed photo's and such for a little extra money. (I
did the math, I earn about 50-cents an hour for every packet purchased - which
means I'm still in the "red.")

I made the decision to accept God's grace in letting me live after the heart
attack and go to work for him. And that's why I teach acting for the Churches in
my town and write and direct Christian plays for them. Soon, I will be giving
classes to our Youth Groups on how to make a Christ orientated film or motion
picture, from blank page to broadcast quality program, as a way to express
themselves and share their faith with others, especially among other youngsters.
It's a way of saying thank you to God for letting me meet my 5-grandchildren and
watching my Sons become real men.

Yes, long-winded, but I hope this has been of interest for all of you - and
let me say that your support has made a great difference in my life. May God
bless all of you - and please maintain your own ethics and morality. It's the
only way we'll survive.

   Sincerely,

   Charles Briles (Eugene Barkley)

   Hi Girl Howdy,

Well, when it comes to Star Trek, I have to say, that's more popular world
wide than The Big Valley. They also have regular conventions, because there are
so many "Trekkies". I was too young to watch it when it was on, but I was a big
fan watching re-broadcasts in the 70's. With that kind of an immense fan base,
the studio knew ahead of time it would sell. That's a low risk prediction for
them. They can put out the sets at high cost for enormous profit and know they
will sell. After each set is released individually for maximum profit, it's
common to see the whole series come out on DVD at a reduced price. As with
anything, buy more in quantity, and it's cheaper. Also, in this case, they knew
they already released each season separately, and thus there are many DVD sets
out there already. So, it's not as easy to keep selling. So, when they put the
whole series together, all three years, they have to take into consideration how
many buyers are still
available in the market. So, the price needs to come down. Also, like I said,
buy more in quantity and get it cheaper. We see that with everything these days.
I'm no expert on the industry. This is just common sense based on general
experience.

Sure, adding bonus extras would make a person want to buy the DVD sets even if
they already had the series. They would buy it for the extras if they are really
good fans and want the behind the scenes commentary, etc, some interviews,
documentary on the show, and other additions like bloopers, although I've never
seen bloopers as an extra on a DVD set. Those have been available for a bunch of
shows on a separate DVD. I remember Mr. Briles mentioning in email once that
some actors don't like bloopers shown. When you think of it, it makes sense.
It's basically an actor making a mistake. How many people want to publicly
broadcast clips of themselves making mistakes in their profession, albeit
innocent and funny to the viewer. Also, you have to get the actors to agree to
do interviews for extras. Not all actors do. I know I have some DVD's for
classic TV shows, and some actors do the commentary on episodes and interviews
and documentaries, but some cast
members do not. Who knows why. Could be scheduling conflicts, or lack of
interest on the part of the actor.

   Desiree

Dear Desiree,I've been reading customer comments about the BV DVDs on the web.
Onetalked about the pricing on Season 1 vs. Season 2/Volume 1 and how allthree
seasons of the original Star Trek series today are now sellingtogether for less
than one single season originally cost. (You canget all three seasons of Star
Trek for $178, while one season used tocost $100.)Another wished Fox would
package all four BV seasons together and addsome extras -- interviews with the
actors today, bloopers, and the"Portrait: Barbara Stanwyck" interview that was
allegedly filmed on theset of the Big Valley. I would buy this. I would pay more
for this. How many people in this group would? Wouldn't those extras make
itattractive to people who would otherwise be content to watch thereruns on TV?

Girl Howdy,

My response in the forum was based on your comments made in the forum. I replied
there because your comments were made there. We both have our own experiences,
some good, and some bad. Mine are good with the US system, and what I hear from
relatives abroad is bad. I'm glad Mr. Briles chimed in to let you know the
details on his issue and that he has a good personal policy. I'm glad you are
receiving info. From your post in the forum, it didn't sound so. I'm well aware
of different systems in Europe. I have friends and family spread out over there.
My cousin in Amsterdam has great health care, but she's paying for it through
the nose with 52% of her paycheck confiscated in taxes. The bottom line is that
the American economy is the biggest engine on this planet. Europe's economies
can't compete. Also, they are over burdened by social spending, high taxes, and
high unemployment. We all have our choices, and I thank God, I'm here.

Best to you, good luck,

Desiree

Desiree,

My opinion of the US health
care system is based on the fact that I am an American citizen, born, raised and
to this day tax paying. I grew up in the US,
where my father was a doctor/director of a county hospital/dean of a university
school of medicine. My views are solidly built on my family's personal
experience.
I have a young step-mother-in-law who was physically devastated by MS after
losing her employer-provided insurance when
the company went out of business. No one will cover her
"pre-existing condition" now. Too young to qualify for Medicare, the battle for
disability coverage went on for years because an
American doctor argued at her review that MS is not a disability. My
father-in-law, who served in the US military, has veteran's insurance, the
benefits of which have been considerably whittled down in the last decade. When
he needed a pacemaker, his doctor said, "He'll die without it, so finally we can
justify spending some money on him." He has had to live with severe pain from
non-life-threatening injuries that they won't justify spending money on.
Uninsured medical costs for the two of them have wiped out their savings and
retirement, adding humiliating financial distress to poor health. My family has
suffered the reality of the failures and limitations of US health care, as have
nearly 50 million Americans who do not have health insurance and cannot afford
care, their numbers increasing daily in this economic crisis. There are
Americans who choose to go abroad for quality, affordable medical treatment
because they cannot get it at
home, my family among them. I've met
them in hospitals and doctors' offices here and in other countries.

My opinion of foreign
medical care comes from living in seven
different countries for 1-5 years at a stretch and using the local health care
systems regularly. Some were much worse than the US, some were much better.
Europe is a continent, not a country. To assume that something which might be
reality in Serbia must also be true in Spain is like assuming that Peru is just
like Canada because they are both on the same continent. There are huge
differences between neighboring, German-speaking Austria and Germany. Contrary
to what you've heard, Austrians do not have to wait for months for life-saving
procedures (or routine for that matter). I've had non-emergency knee operations
here and waited less than a week for each. Austrians have the option of private
insurance in addition to public and they have complete freedom of choice in
their medical providers. In fact, the only country where I have not had that
freedom is the US with HMOs that allowed me to choose only from their list of
approved providers, not the doctors I wanted. Finally, public
funding of health care is not synonymous with authoritarianism or socialism --
Europe has numerous market-oriented democracies with more political parties to
choose from
than we do in the US. Americans use public funding to pay for many essential
services like police and fire departments, public schools and libraries. The
difference is that Austrians consider high quality health care one of the
essential services that should be accessible to all citizens. It isn't cheap,
unless compared to the $2.4 trillion the US spent on health care in 2008 without
providing health insurance to all citizens.
I follow and participate in the US health care debate. Right here on my desk, I
have a stack of reform proposals, opinions, and articles from Max Baucus and the
Senate Finance Committee, the Senate HELP Committee, the House Tri-Committee,
HR676, Bernie Sanders, the AMA, the American Chamber of Commerce, the Heritage
Foundation, Physicians for a National Health Program and an article about the
lessons to be learned from the Massachusetts reform that you mentioned. I
discuss these with friends and family in Europe and at home because I want to
know what works, what doesn't and why, so I can make informed choices about
reform legislation. While I apologize for confusing the "you are uninsurable"
issue with the disability insurance, MetLife going after Mr. Briles for $0.05
cents is just one of many examples I can cite of the questionable priorities of
the insurance industry. Being critical of it does not make me any less of an
American than you.
Nor does being able to appreciate something that another country or culture
does better than mine. Nor does believing we should and can learn from our
mistakes, learn from others, and strive to be better.
And since this has NOTHING to do with The Big Valley, I invite you to respond to
me directly at my e-mail (kahweah@...), if you care to.
Sincerely,Girl Howdy

Dear Chuck,

I spoke to Robert Conrad again on his radio program this evening. Also, Shirley
Jones was the live guest today. Looks like Lee Majors comes up next week. A few
weeks ago they had Dawn Wells "Mary Ann - Gilligan's Island". Prior to that,
Billy Mumy from Lost in Space. So, it's not just limited to Academy Award
winners like Shirley, etc !

Robert Conrad has an audience of 5.5 million people.

They are happy to have you. If you desire to be a guest, just call (818)
352-7152 and ask to speak to Michael Horn. Mike founded CRN, has acting
background himself, and is the co-host with Robert for his program that airs
live on Thursdays at 3pm Pacific time.

We'd be thrilled to hear you.

Regards, Desiree

Dear Desiree:

Thanks for your kind thought. It would be nice. I've never met Robert
Conrad, but saw him all the time since Big Valley was shot on the same lot
as "Wild West."

However, I don't think the producers of the radio show, or their audiences
for that matter, would have much interest in my being a participant.

Again my thanks. Home all is well with you and the rest of all the "Valley
Dwellers."

Regards:

Charles Briles

for Mr. Briles

Desiree

Well, I can't resist 'chiming in'...
Regarding the American economy being the biggest... yes, that is true.
Regarding Europe's economies being unable to compete with the US...
I disagree. Our current health care system is expensive, inefficient and a
significant operating cost of US business that makes it almost impossible to
compete with business in countries that do have universal healthcare. To
compound the problem, the health insurance industry derives its profits from a
business model that rewards denial of services rather than providing health care
services. Remember the uproar over GM and the large portion of their business
expense that goes towards healthcare? Although convenient to blame the unions
and workers making a respectable middle class income, the bottom line is that
our health care system is strangling US business.
