A run down wooden house, enveloped in fog (naturally).
We hear the roar and then see Vlad the impala drive up.
The engine shuts off and we jump right to the boys rum-
maging in the trunk for weapons. Dean pulls out a taser
gun. "What do you got those amped up to", asks Sam, the
college boy. Although you wouldn't guess it from his grammar.
"A hundred thousand volts", Dean replies.
"Damn", days Sam. Dean continues, "yeah. I want this
rawhead extra freakin' crispy". He then reminds Sam,
"you only get one shot with these things, so make it count".
Inside, a door swings open and our boys enter doing that
cop stance, with gun in one hand rested on top of the other
hand holding a flashlight. Their hands dart around, search-
ing the room with the flashlight. They slowly descend a stair-
way. Dean reaches the bottom first and does a quick look into
the room and to the back of the stairwell. Dean steps onto
the basement floor and moves forward as Sam backs down the
stairs the rest of the way, looking under the stairs and be-
hind them. Suddenly they hear a noise. They both stop and turn
towards an old armoire, where the noise seems to be emanating
from. Sam and Dean carefully move towards the wardrobe, "on
three", Dean oh so sexily whispers. "One...two....three" and
Dean quickly opens the door and they aim their guns, only to
find two grubby little children huddled in each corner. Sam
quietly asks the little boy, "is it still here?" and the boy
nods yes. Dean grabs the boy's hand and tells him to grab his
sister's (I don't know why but something in the way Dean said
that just makes me go, "awww" every time. He's such a good big
brother.). They start to head back up the stairs with the
children when something grabs Sam's leg from under the stair
well. He falls and slides back down the stairs
as the children scream. "Sam!", Dean yells as he jumps back
down on the basement floor and swings around to try to get a
glimpse of the rawhead. He pulls out his taser and takes a shot
(they do a cool slow motion shot of this). He misses (but, since
they slowed it down, he looks really cool doing it. lol). Dean
then tells Sam to get the kids out of there. Sam tells him to
take his taser and tosses it to him before he hurries up the stairs
to get the kids to safety. Dean is doing his cop stance again,
searching the basement. You hear the rawhead rustling around,
drawing Dean's attention. "Come on!", Dean says, growing
impatient. He moves towards some stacks of crates, darting his
hands and eyes back and forth. Suddenly the rawhead appears and
punches Dean in the face. He stumbles back and hits the floor, his
taser falling from his hands. He lands in a pile of debris
surrounded by water. He sees the rawhead coming towards him and
desperately looks around for the taser, sees it and scrambles
towards it, putting himself right in the middle of the puddled
water. The rawhead charges at him and he fires. We see the
current run through the rawhead and as the camera pans down we see
that the rawhead has stepped into the same pool of water that Dean
is sitting in. The current travels down the rawhead, across the
water and then painfully travels through Dean's body. He
convulses, causing his hand to continue to grip the taser
and dispense the rest of the current into his body. Once the taser
is spent, the rawhead falls to the ground and Dean is left
unconscious on the floor. Sam rushes down the stairs and sees Dean
motionless. He calls out, "Dean!" as he rushes to his brother's
side. He frantically pulls him forward trying to get him to
respond and we cut to the opening title shot.
A hospital. A nurse tells Sam that there's no insurance on file.
We see two cops standing off to the side of the hallway, as Sam
whips out a credit card. The nurse takes the card, looks at the
name and then says, "thank you...Mr. Berkowitz" (heh. The "Son
of Sam"). Sam looks over at the two cops like, "what? I didn't
just give that lady a fraudulent credit card". lol . Very cute.
The cops tell Sam they can finish things up later, knowing he's
concerned for his brother. Sam says, "no, no. That's ok. We
were just taking a short cut through the neighborhood (what?
there was a whole neighborhood of decrepit houses? lol) . Our
windows were rolled down. We heard some screaming when we drove
past the house and we stopped. Ran in." The cop finishes, "and
you found the kids in the basement?'. Sam says, "yeah" and the
cop goes on to say, "well, thank god you did". Just then Sam sees
the doctor coming and excuses himself. Sam asks how Dean is and
the doctor says he's resting. He says that the electrocution trig-
gered a pretty massive heart attack and that Dean's heart was
damaged. "How damaged?", asks Sam. The doctor says they've done
all they can and that all they can do is make him as comfortable as
possible. He says that he gives Dean a couple of weeks, maybe a
month, to live. Sam's all confused at this, "no. no. There's got
to be something you can do". The doctor says they can't work
miracles. Sam clenches his jaw and rushes off to Dean's room.
Dean's watching tv, flipping through the channels. The camera pans
up his hospital bed and rests on Dean's face. He's a bit pale and
has the dark circles under his eyes. But soft, what light through
yon hospital bed speaks. It is the east and Dean is the
sun....ahem. Sorry. As Sam sadly enters the room, in kind of a
gravelly voice, Dean asks, "have you ever actually watched daytime
tv. It's terrible". heh. (a nod to his work on DOOL) Sam hangs
his head and softly says he talked to Dean's doctor. Dean acts as
if he didn't hear Sam and comments about that fabric softener teddy
bear and says that he's "going to hunt that little bitch down".
lol. Sam says, "Dean", pulling his attention away from the tv and
making him deal with the situation at hand. Dean says, "Yeah. Well,
it looks like you're gonna have to leave town without me".
Incredulous, Sam says, "What are you talkin' about? I'm not going
to leave you here". Dean pays no attention and continues by saying
that Sam had better take care of that car or he'll haunt his ass.
Sam, who looks on the verge of tears, says he doesn't think that's
funny. Dean flashes a half hearted grin and says, "aw, come on.
It's a little funny". Sam fights to control his emotions and hangs
his head. He silently looks out he window. Dean then says, "look
Sammy. What can I say. It's a dangerous gig. I drew the short
straw. That's it. End of story". Sam argues, "don't talk like
that, all right? We still have options." With a tinge of
bitterness coming through, Dean replies, "What options? We have
burial or cremation". Sam shakes his head, not wanting to hear
it. Dean continues, "I know it's not easy....but I'm gonna die.
And there's nothing you can do to stop it". (awww.) Sam
determinedly says, "watch me". (aww)
The camera pans over some print outs of heart conditions
and treatments as we hear John's voice mail message. With
a shaky voice, we hear Sam say, "Hey dad, it's Sam....uuuh...
you probably won't even get this but, uh, it's Dean. He's
sick. The doctors say there's nothing they can do...". (Jared's
doing really well in this scene. His voice is filled with emotion
and the words catch in his throat as he's fighting back tears) He
goes on, "but, uh, they don't know the things we know, right? So
don't worry cuz I'm gonna do whatever it takes to get him better...
..all right. Just wanted you to know". He hangs up the phone
and kind of tosses/drops it on the bed, then just sits there kind
of nervously biting on his finger and thumb. There's a knock on the
door. Since no one knows he's there, he suspiciously walks to the
door and opens it. It's a very tired looking Dean, leaning against
the doorway. Sam gets this sweet "I'm so happy to see you" look
and then, remembering how sick Dean is, says, "What the hell are
you doing here?". Dean says he checked himself out, as he hobbles
through the doorway. "Are you crazy?", Sam worriedly asks. Dean
jokes, "Well, I'm not gonna die in a hospital where the nurses
aren't even hot". Sam tells him that his whole "I laugh in
the face of death" thing is crap. He can see right through
it. Dean's all, "yeah, whatever dude. "Have you even slept? You
look worse than me." Sam helps him over to a chair. Dean
seems really exhausted and in some pain. Sam says he's been
scouring the internet for the last three days. (so, what, Dean's
been alone in a hospital bed for three days? I wonder what he
was thinking about all that time. Oh, that's right. They like
to make Dean shallow and un-reflective so, even if they did show
him there, he'd just snark or flirt.) He says he called every
contact in their dad's journal and Dean asks, "what for?". Sam says
he was looking for way to help him. He says that Joshua, one of
their dad's friends, called him back and told him about
a "specialist" in Nebraska. Dean says, "you're not gonna let me die
in peace, are ya?". Sam smiles and says that he's not going to let
him die, period. "We're goin'", he concludes.
We hear the roar of Vlad the impala as it rolls down a gravel
road. We then see a parade of the infirmed trudging through
mud. Sam gets out of the car and rushes around to help Dean
out. Dean opens the door and looks around and notices a tent
with a sign for "Roy LeGrange -Faith Healer". He starts to
get out of the car and Sam reaches down to help Dean stand up
but Dean brushes him off and says, "I got it.". He's clearly
irritated. "Man, you're a lying bastard. I thought you said
we were going to see a doctor." Sam is taken aback a bit and
defends it by saying that he said "specialist". He says that
this guy is supposed to be the real deal. Dean says, "I can't
believe you brought me here to see some guy who heals people
out of a tent." He is not a happy camper. Just then a woman
with an umbrella passes by and offers, "Reverend LeGrange is
a great man". Dean snarks, "yeah, that's nice". They then
walk by a guy talking to a cop saying that he has a right to
protest and that LeGrange is a fraud, bilking all of these
people out of their hard earned money. The cop argues that
it's a place of worship and makes him leave. Dean sarcas-
tically surmises that he's not "part of the flock" and Sam
counters by saying that whenever there's something people can't
explain there's controversy and Dean says, "come on, Sam, a faith
healer?". Sam says maybe it's time to have a little faith. Dean
says that he has faith in reality and knowing what's really going
on. Sam asks how he can be such a skeptic with the things
they see every day and Dean says that's exactly it. They
seem them. They know they're real. Sam argues that if he
knows evil is out there how can he not think that good is too.
Dean says it's because he's seen what evil does to good people.
Just then, yet another person chimes in on a conversation they
have nothing to do with. You hear a woman's voice saying, "maybe
god works in mysterious ways" and then she turns around and
reveals herself to be a pretty blonde. Which our resident
horndog immediately takes notice of and says, "maybe he does",
flashing that classic Dean grin (*sigh*). She smiles back and
Dean says that he thinks she may have just turned him around
on the subject. Sam smiles and shakes his head and she's all,
"yeah, I'm sure". He introduces himself and Sam, and she intro-
duces herself as Layla. She then asks him why he's there if
he's not a believer. Dean says that his brother apparently
believes enough for the both of them. Sam smiles. Layla's
mother comes over and tells her it's about to start, so they
head inside. Dean says, "I betcha she could work in some mys-
terious ways". Ah, that's our Dean. lol.
Inside the tent, Dean looks around and notices a security
camera and remarks, "yeah, peace love and trust all over".
Dean tries to take a seat in the back but Sam says they're
sitting up front. (now who's being bossy, Sammy? lol) Dean
doesn't want to but Sam grabs his arm and ushers him towards
the front. He asks if Dean is all right as he places both
hands on Dean's shoulders to help him along. Once again,
Dean shrugs him off and says, "dude, get off me". Sam spots
a seat suitable to him and says, "perfect" and Dean's all, "yeah,
perfect" as they take two seats behind Layla and her mother.
Sam tells Dean to take the aisle seat and tries to help Dean sit
down. lol. (Sam is being very sweetly attentive and Dean is having
none of it. It's very cute.) The reverend is taking the stage and,
from his cane and sunglasses, we see that he's blind. His wife is
helping him off with his coat. Sam takes a quick look around at the
fellow afflicted. The reverend starts speaking by saying that each
morning his wife Sue Ann reads him the news and that it never seems
good. The audience voices their agreement in typical tent revival
fashion. There's a shot of our poor weak Dean's beautiful
face as he squirms in his seat a little. Roy continues, "Some-
one committing some immoral unspeakable act". More nods and vocal
agreement from the church goers. Roy goes on, "but I say to you
that God is watching." The room is filled with "praise the Lord"
types of rumblings. "God rewards the good and punishes the
corrupt", as the camera close in on Roy's face. "It is the Lord
that does the healing here, friends. The Lord who guides me in
choosing who to heal by helping me to see into their hearts". In
the midst of the numerous, "amen"s being said by the crowd, Dean
leans over to Sam and can be heard saying, "yeah, right into their
wallets". Layla's face falls and the crowd falls silent. Roy
responds to this, "you think so, young man?". Dean, surprised that
he was heard, apologizes. Roy says, "oh, no. Don't be. Just watch
what you say around a blind man. We got real sharp ears.". The
crowd laughs, as Dean half smiles. Roy asks what his name is and
Dean nervously clears his throat and tells him. Roy then says
that he wants him to come up on stage. The crowd starts cheering.
Layla and her mother, however, do not. Layla's mother sits there
solemnly. Dean says, "nah, it's ok.". Sam frustratingly asks what
Dean is doing. Roy says that he came there to be healed, hadn't he,
and Dean says yes but that he should go ahead and pick somebody
else. The crowd is applauding as he's saying this, trying to
encourage him to go up and Sam, upon hearing Dean try to turn down
the offer, can't believe what Dean is saying. Roy says that he
didn't pick Dean. The Lord did. The audience continues clapping
and Sam encourages Dean to get up there and, finally, Dean
reluctantly takes the stage, as Sam happily looks on. Roy asks if
he's ready and Dean says, "look. No disrespect but, uh, I'm not
exactly a believer.". "You will be son", responds Roy. "You will
be." Dean unsurely looks around as Roy asks the crowd to pray with
him. He clasps his hands together and then raises them in the air.
Roy's breathing gets heavier as he carries his hand towards Dean and
touches his shoulder. Dean looks at him, not knowing what to
expect, as Roy moves his hand from his shoulder to his head.
Clearly feeling something, Dean starts to look as though he's going
to pass out, as Roy says, "all right now.". Dean swallows hard and
falls to his knees. Sam nervously looks on. Dean collapses and Sam
rushes the stage. He pulls on his jacket to see if he's all right
just as Dean gasps for air and awakens. Sam tells him to say
something as Dean looks around in confusion. His eyes lock on Roy
and a figure standing behind him. A pasty white creepy man in a
suit is there for a moment, looking down on Dean and then turns and
disappears.
Now in an examining room, Sam is ecstatic that Dean feels ok but
Dean is not exactly showing signs of relief at the prospect of no
longer dying. His mind still on what he saw back at the tent.
He solemnly tells Sam that he feels fine. The doctor enters and
says that, according to all of the tests, there is nothing wrong
with his heart and there are no signs that there ever was (and wham
bam thank you Sam, Dean is completely healed within the first 10
minutes of the show). She adds, "not that someone your age should
be having heart trouble, but, although it's strange, it does
happen.". Dean locks in on her statement, as Sam happily accepts
it, and asks what she means. She tells them that yesterday a young
guy like Dean, 27, athletic, died of a heart attack "out of
nowhere". This disturbs Dean. He thanks the doctor and she leaves
the room. Dean remarks at how odd that is and shoots a wary look at
Sam. Sam disregards it by saying that people's hearts give out all
the time and Dean counters, "no they don't.". Seeing as the doctor
just said that it's strange when it happens in one so young. Sam
doesn't want to look this one in the mouth and asks Dean why they
can't just be thankful and move on. Dean says he can't shake this
feeling and explains that when he was healed something felt "wrong"
and that he saw someone, a spirit, on stage. Sam says that if
there was something there, he should have seen it because he's been
seeing an awful lot of things lately. Dean says, "excuse me,
psychic wonder but you're just gonna need a little faith on this
one." Sam sighs. "Sam, I've been hunting long enough to trust a
feeling like this", concludes Dean, as he stares down Sam, who then
sees that he's not going to let this go. Reluctantly, Sam
says, "Yeah, all right. So, what do you want to do". Dean tells
him that he wants him to check out the heart attack guy while he
goes to visit the reverend.
At the LeGrange home, Sue Ann pours Dean some tea as he says
that he's just trying to make sense of what happened. "A miracle
is what happened", says Sue Ann. "Miracles come so often around
Roy.". Dean nods in acknowledgment and then asks when they
started. Roy says he woke up one morning stone blind. The doctors
figured out he had cancer and told him he had maybe a month (I
guess that's the standard timeline). He said they prayed for a
miracle. He said that he was weak but he told Sue Ann to keep right
on praying. He went into a coma and the doctors didn't think he'd
wake up, but he did and the cancer was gone. He adds that if it
wasn't for his eyes, no one would ever know he had it. "And
suddenly you could heal people", Dean says. Roy says he discovered
it afterwards and that God has blessed him in many ways. Sue Ann
chimes in by saying that his flock just swelled overnight and that
this is just the beginning. Dean asks if he can ask one last
question. Roy says he can, of course. Dean asks why him, out of all
the sick people. Why did he choose him. Roy says, "well, like I
said before, the Lord guides me. I looked into your heart and you
just...stood out from all the rest.". Dean asks what he saw in his
heart and Roy replies, "A young man with an important purpose. A
job to do.....and it isn't finished.". Close on Dean's sweet
troubled face.
Sam, talking with someone about the heart attack guy. The guy
is saying that HAG seemed healthy. He swam every day and didn't
smoke, which made the heart attack seem bizarre. Sam reiterates
something the guy must have told him off screen and says, "you
said he was running? Before he collapsed?". The guy says that
he was and that he was freakin' out, saying something was after
him but nothing was there. Sam thanks him for the info and
notices that a clock at the top of the stairs has stopped. He
comments to the guy that the clock is busted and the guy says
that it just froze there and they haven't been able to get it
going again. Sam asks if it's the same time that HAG died and
the guy asks how Sam knew. (cuz he's the psychic wonder geek
boy demon hunter, that's why!)
Dean exits Roy's house and encounters Layla and her mother
on the front stairs. They exchange hellos and she asks how
he's feeling. He says he feels "cured", he guesses, and asks
what she's doing there. She says that her mom wanted to talk
to the reverend. Sue Ann, who followed Dean out, overhears this
and then says that Roy is resting and won't be seeing anyone
else right now. This upsets Layla's mother and she begs Sue Ann,
"please. This is our sixth time. He's got to see us." Sue Ann
tells her that Roy is well aware of Layla's situation and that he
wants to help just as soon as the Lord allows. She tells her to
have faith and then goes back into the house. Layla's mom turns
her frustration to Dean and asks him what he's even still doing
there. Saying that he got what he wanted. Layla tells her to
stop but her mom says it's too much. They've been to every ser-
vice and she wishes Roy would stop choosing strangers over her.
"Strangers that don't even believe", she adds as she looks at Dean
again. Dean asks Layla what's wrong and she uncomfortably tries to
shrug it off by saying that she "has this thing". Her mother jumps
in and says it's a brain tumor. It's inoperable. She starts to say
that she has 6 months to live but Layla places her hand on her
shoulder and her voice trails off. Dean says he's sorry and Layla
says it's ok. Her mom disagrees and says it isn't ok, and, once
again turns to Dean and asks him why he deserves to live more than
her daughter. (ok, bitch, I feel for your situation and all but
leave my lover alone!) Layla sighs shakily and leaves, leaving my
poor Dean feeling even guiltier than he already did. He looks back
at the house, knowing something is not right there.
Back at the motel, Dean enters looking a bit upset. Sam, sitting
at his computer, looks sheepishly at him as Dean asks what he
found out. The first words out of his mouth are, "I'm sorry".
Dean, knowing that's not a good sign, asks what he's sorry about.
Sam tells Dean that HAG died at 4:17 and Dean immediately puts
together that that's the exact time that he was healed. Sam says
that he put together a list of everyone Roy has healed over the
past year and cross checked them with local obits. Every time
someone was healed someone else died of the same symptom that Roy
was healing at the time. Dean sits down as he looks at the obits.
As the boys exposit, we cut to a shot of a girl running along a
trail in the woods. She's listening to music with headphones on
and senses something. She stops and calls out, "hello". We cut
back to the boys continuing to discuss that when someone's healed
of cancer someone else dies of cancer and Dean sits back in his
chair and says, "so, Marshall Hall died to save me?". Sam says
that the guy probably would have died anyway, and that someone
else would have been healed but this doesn't ease Dean's mind.
We cut away to Roy healing an elderly man in a wheelchair, wearing
an oxygen tube. We cut back to Dean telling Sam that he never
should have brought him there. Sam says that he was just trying to
save his life but Dean, clearly upset, raises his voice and
says, "but Sam, some guy is dead now because of me.".
Sam sadly says, "I didn't know" and Dean backs off a little and
falls silent. Cut back to Roy asking the crowd to pray with him
as we hear Sam voicing his wonder at how Roy is doing it. How is
he trading a life for a life. Jump back to the motel. Dean says
that Roy's not doing it. He says that something else is doing it
for him. We then are back in the woods, seeing the girl getting
increasingly out of breath. She looks around and turns to see
creepy stage guy as we hear Dean's voice saying that he didn't want
to believe it but deep down he knew who the guy on stage was. Sam
asks what Dean's talking about and Dean says that there's only one
thing that can give and take life like that. "We're dealing with
a reaper.". Blue Oyster Cult's song, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"
swells as we see the girl trying to outrun the reaper. The camera
jumps back and forth from her to the healing. The girl runs into
the reaper, who puts his hand on her head as Roy puts his hand on
the person he's healing. The girl's eyes go gray as the life is
being drained from her and she gasps for air. She falls to the
ground and then the reaper is on stage with Roy, with it's hand
on the other side of the elderly man's head. Transferring the
life he just drained from the girl. The elderly man gets up from
his wheelchair, kneels on the stage and then removes his oxygen
tube and happily takes a deep breath.
The motel. Sam is asking Dean if he really thinks it's
"the" grim reaper. Dean corrects him and says he's not
"the" reaper. He's "a" reaper. (And here we go with them
spoon feeding us the explanation of the theory. Do we really
need to hear all of this? I don't think we do, personally.)
Dean goes on, "there's reaper lore in pretty much every culture
on earth. They go by a hundred different names and it's possible
that there's more than one of them.". Sam scoffs, "you said you
saw a dude in a suit.". Dean snarks back, "what, you think he
should have been workin' the whole black robe thing?". This
doesn't seem to convince Sam so Dean continues, "look, you said
it yourself. The clock stopped, right?". He holds up a picture
and says, "Reapers stop time. And you can only see 'em when
they're coming at you, which is why I could see it and you
couldn't.". To this Sam says, "maybe". (Bite me, Sam. jeez.)
Dean says that there's nothing else it could be and that the
question is how Roy is controlling the damn thing. Something
clicks with Sam. He remembers the cross he saw in the tent.
He reaches for some tarot cards and says he knew he'd seen it
before. He comes to the right card and shows it to Dean. More
snooze inducing exposition, about the history of tarot. It dates
back to the early Christian era when some priests were still
using magic and a few of them veered into the dark stuff...
necromancy...how to push death away...how to cause it. So,
Dean concludes that Roy is using black magic to bind the reaper.
Sam says that if he is he's riding a whirlwind and that it's
like putting a dog leash on a great white. Dean gets up and
poses by the sink (ok, he puts a coffee cup in the sink and
then leans against it) and says that they need to stop Roy.
Sam asks how and Dean says, "you know how.". Sam says, "Wait a
minute. What the hell are you talkin' about, Dean. We can't
kill Roy.". Dean responds by saying that Roy is deciding who
lives and who dies, which is a monster in his book. Sam firmly
says, "No. We're not going to kill a human being, Dean", with a
look like he can't believe he even has to spell that out to Dean.
He finishes by saying that if they do that they're no better than
he is. Dean gives in and says, "Ok, we can't kill Roy. We can't
kill death. Any bright ideas college boy?". (cuz, those are
clearly the only options. lol. Oh Dean. I'll cut him some
slack here because I really think he's being driven by guilt.
He feels that someone else died in his place and also just
learned that he may have taken Layla's place. So, that's two
people he feels responsible for) Sam says that if Roy is using
some black spell on the reaper then they have to figure out what
it is and how to break it.
Vlad the impala roars into view as they pull up to the tent. Sam
is off to see if he can find a spell book and Dean is off to try
to stall Roy while Sam looks. They run into the protester they
saw earlier and he hands them a flier and says that Roy LeGrange
is a fraud and Dean says, "amen, brother" while Sam tells him to
keep up the good work. Sue Ann and another man help Roy down the
stairs of their house and we see Sam on the porch as they leave.
He climbs in through a window and takes something out of his
pocket. (I didn't know what it was at first but then they show a
door which sounds like it's being unlocked with a key, but, since he
surely couldn't have a key, it must be a lock pick thingy.) He
enters what looks to be a library/den and looks around. He starts
looking at the books on the book shelf and notices the dust on
the shelf. ( just because Roy can't see, doesn't mean you can
slack off on the house work Sue Ann) Sam notices the section
in front of one book is free from dust (and just so we catch
that, they have Sam run his finger along the shelf, look at his
finger so we see the dust on his finger and then for good measure
they have him rub his finger and thumb together. If it looks like
dust and feels like dust, well, then, it must be DUST! Then, he
runs his finger along the dust free spot and they have him do the
same thing. Only, you know, this time no dust. lmao. Ok,
writers! WE GET IT). The book is an encyclopedia of Christian
History for students and clergy. Sam pulls it out and quickly flips
through the pages to see if anything is stuck in between the pages
that might be a spell or something. He sees nothing and then
notices a smaller book tucked behind where that book was and pulls
it out. Bingo. He opens it up, to a page that's marked. It has a
picture of a reaper on it. He flips through the book some more and
sees a picture of the cross he saw in the tent, along with some
newspaper clippings. One is about an openly gay teacher and another
is about the girl we saw running in the woods. The last one he
opens is about the man that's been protesting the services.
Back in the tent, Dean's cell phone rings. Sam tells him what
he's found . He says that Roy is choosing victims he sees as
immoral and he tells Dean who he thinks the next victim is.
Sam says he'll find the protester but that Dean can't let Roy
heal anyone. Naturally, Roy calls out for Layla, to come to
the stage and Dean is all, "aw, man". Sam searches the parking
lot as Dean tries to stop Layla. He tells her she can't go
up there. She asks why not because they've waited for months.
Dean says she can't let Roy heal her but Layla doesn't understand,
since Roy healed him. He tells her if she lets him heal her some-
thing bad is going to happen and that he can't explain. He asks
her to just believe him. Sue Ann is motioning for Layla to come
with her and Dean says, "Please". She looks to Sue Ann and then
to her mother and tells Dean she's sorry and goes up on stage.
Leaving Dean with a frustrated "what am I going to do now" look
about him. Sam hears a cry for help out in the parking lot and
we see the reaper's target frantically running. Roy starts to
do his thing. Sam runs to the guy screaming for help and looks
around for the reaper but he can't see him. He asks the guy
where he is and he says he's right there in front of them. He
grabs the guy and they both run. Roy is about to lay his hand
upon Layla and we hear Dean yell, "fire. The tent's on fire.
Everybody get out of here". Roy stops and people start to
scatter. Layla's mother begs Roy not to stop. Dean stands
there with a pained look on his face. Roy tells everyone to
leave in an orderly fashion as he is helped from the stage.
Dean calls Sam and tells him that he stopped Roy. Sam tells
Dean that he thinks it's ok. He and the protester guy have
stopped running. PG is looking around and, while at first
seeming that he's free and clear, he turns to see the reaper
standing right in front of him. Sam frantically tells Dean it
didn't work as he sees that the reaper is still coming for PG.
PG is forced to his knees by the reaper as his eyes go gray.
Sam yells into the phone that the reaper's still coming, as PG
is now completely down on the ground. Sam tells Dean that Roy
must not be the one controlling it. As Dean is wondering who
the hell is, he turns to see Sue Ann standing by the piano with
her back turned. He tells Sam it's Sue Ann and rushes across the
tent. He grabs her arm and turns her around to reveal that she's
clutching a necklace that has the same cross symbol on it. As she
quits her spell and starts to release her grip on the necklace the
reaper releases his hand from PG and walks away. Sue Ann stuffs
the necklace under her shirt and yells for help. PG gasps for air
and Sam helps him up. PG says "thank God". heh (yeah, maybe a sex
god. Dean saved your ass, dude) Two cops escort Dean out of
the tent as Sue Ann plays the innocent, yet forgiving preacher's
wife, victim and tells Dean she just doesn't understand, after
everything they've done for him and after Roy healed him. Dean
shoots her a "man, you are so full of shit, lady" look as she goes
on to say how disappointed they are in him. Dean just stares her
down and she says they can let him go because they're not going
to press any charges. (I'm not quite sure what charges there would
be to press here. He didn't do anything to her. Well, I suppose
they could charge him for yelling "fire" in a crowded tent. )
She adds that the Lord will deal with him as he sees fit. (Since
she thinks she's God, and can decide who dies, I guess that means
that she'll deal with him) The cops tell him that if they catch
him around there again they'll put the fear of God in him. Dean
snarkily says he understands, "Yes sir. Fear of god. Got it."
And they give him a little shove. He turns to see Layla, who
wants to know why. She says it could have been her only chance.
Dean says he's not a healer. Layla again says that Roy healed
him and Dean says he knows it doesn't seem fair and that he wishes
he could explain, but that Roy is not the answer. He says he's
sorry and Layla disappointedly says goodbye. He turns to watch her
go as she turns back around to say that she wishes him luck. Dean
responds in kind and sadly watches her go. He says to himself,
"you deserve it a lot more than me". (Awww. My poor guilt ridden
sex god.) He heads back to Vlad the impala and overhears Roy
telling Layla's mom that he'll heal Layla in a private session.
Back at the motel room the boys discuss the situation. Sam
says, "So Roy really believes", as Dean is frustratedly (is
that a word? It is in Lola's world) pacing. He stops and looks
out the window and says he doesn't think Roy has any idea of what
his wife is doing. Sam shows Dean the book he found and tells him
that it was ancient (although, the book itself doesn't
look "ancient" so maybe he just means that it's been copied from
ancient text) and that it was written by a priest that went dark
side. He says that it contains a binding spell for trapping a
reaper. He says that you have to build a black altar with seriously
dark stuff like bones and human blood. Sam shakes his said and
ponders how a preacher's wife could cross a line like that, using
black magic and resorting to murder. (Uh, Sam, I'd think that it
wouldn't be quite so hard for you to understand. Maybe not with
going so far as to black magic and all that but, at least with the
first step anyway, since you yourself were pretty desperate to find
a way to save Dean) Which is what Dean relates her crossover to.
Her desperation to save Roy. He states that she was using the spell
to keep the reaper away from Roy. Sam shakes his head and
says, "Cheating death. Literally." Dean wonders why she's still
using it if Roy is alive and Sam concludes that she's using the
reaper to kill people she thinks are immoral. Dean sighs and
says, "god save us from half the people who think they're doing
god's work". (amen, brother) Sam says they need to break the
binding spell. (ya think, college boy?) Dean conveys that Sue Ann
had a Coptic cross like the one in the book and says that when she
dropped it the reaper backed off. Sam asks if he thinks they need
to find the cross or destroy the altar. Dean says maybe both but
whatever they do they need to do it soon because Roy is healing
Layla that night.
That oh so familiar roar of Vlad the impala as they zoom into
the view. Dean shuts off the engine as Sam mentions that Layla's
car is already there. Dean quietly say, "yeah". Sam senses the
inner turmoil that Dean is feeling and says, "Dean..." but Dean
cuts him off saying that if Roy had picked Layla instead of him
she'd be healed right now.". "Dean, don't", Sam interjects.
Dean goes on, "..and if she's not healed tonight she's gonna die
in a couple of months". Sam replies, "what's happening to her is
horrible but what are you gonna do? Let someone else die to save
her?" Sam concludes by saying, "you said it yourself, Dean. You
can't play god." (oh, Sammy. You're so morally upstanding. Except
if it were someone you cared about and then you, too, would be
seriously contemplating it, considering how desperate you were
to save Dean. Not to mention how hard you tried to shrug off any
of Dean's reservations about what he experienced on stage. You just
wanted to keep the blinders on once you got what you wanted. So get
off your high horse). Dean silently gets out of the car, followed by
Sam. They walk around the back of the tent as you can hear Roy's
voice inside. They peek inside and see a crowd gathered around Roy
but don't see Sue Ann. Sam says she must be at the house. Dean
tells Sam to go find her and he'll catch up, as he moves out in the
open. Sam starts to ask what he's doing as Dean makes for the front
of the house. The two cops from earlier are coming down the front
steps and Dean yells to them asking if they're going to put that
fear of God into him. (Does that really work? Are cops really so
stupid that they don't know when someone is blatantly drawing them
away from someplace? Well, these ones sure are.) They take off
running after Dean as Sam then goes up the stairs and tries to find
a way in. He walks around the wrap around porch but sees no lights
and no sign of Sue Ann. Dean runs around an RV trying to find some
way to lose the cops. He approaches the front of the RV as we see
the cops approaching the area. Sam is still on the porch trying to
figure out where Sue Ann might be. He looks down over the porch
railing and sees some cellar doors with a light emanating from
underneath. The cops are shining their flashlights all around the
RV but don't see any sign of Dean. Sam rushes to the cellar doors
and opens them. Dean, on the other side of the RV, stands up and a
dog in the front seat starts barking like crazy, drawing the cops'
attention. Being the wonder cops they are, they just look under the
RV and look inside the cab but don't go around to the other side to
take a look around there. One cop calls the dog a "psycho mutt" and
they laugh it off and leave. The camera pans up to reveal that Dean
is on top of the RV. (which he didn't really even have to do since
they didn't bother really searching around much after the dog went
berserk. With these guys he probably could have just stood on the
other side and then as they made their way around the back, he could
have stepped to the front and then when they made it around he could
have stepped on the other side and gone in a circle. lol. )
Sam makes his way down the stairs to the cellar and quietly
looks around. He sees the altar and heads for it. He looks
everything over and stops on a picture of Dean, taken from the
security camera, with an "x" through it. As he picks it up (why?
to see if it's a good picture? lol. It's Dean....and it has an X
through it. If you don't know what that means then you need to go
back to college, boy! Ok, I know they do that to make sure the
dimwitted audience catches that it's Dean but, man, I hate that),
Sue Ann appears and says to Sam that she gave his brother life and
she can take it away. Sam angrily tips over the altar and then
charges towards where Sue Ann was but that bitch is faster than
lightning because she's already up the stairs and closes the doors
on him. She shoves some type of tool, maybe an axe, through the
door handles so that Sam can't open them. Sam tries to get them
open and Sue Ann says, "Sam, can't you see? The Lord chose me to
reward the just and punish the wicked.....and your brother is
wicked, and he deserves to die just as Layla deserves to live. It's
God's will.". Sam rushes back down the stairs to find another way
out. Sue Ann bids Sam, "goodbye". He finds a small window and
forces it open with a board, which reveals that the frame of the
window is divided into two small parts by a board. (So, I assume he
knocks that center board out, or knocks out the whole frame, cuz
there's no way in hell Sammy boy could fit through the small
openings. ) Roy starts doing his thing. (good thing he was
dilly dallying around before healing her) Dean makes his way
towards the tent and suddenly the lights lining the lot start
bursting. Dean looks behind him and sees them all, one by one,
going out. Roy readies to put his hand upon Layla once again. Dean
turns around again to see the reaper standing in front of him. He
walks towards Dean, who kind of steps back a little but does not
run. Commercial. Grrr....
Cut back to Roy still readying to heal Layla. Then to Sue Ann
standing outside of the tent chanting her spell while holding the
Coptic cross. The reaper places his hand upon Dean's head. He
grimaces in pain as Roy (finally) places his hand upon Layla's
head. Sue Ann continues chanting as Layla and Dean simultaneously
are forced to their knees. Dean's eyes go gray as he groans in
pain and gasps. Sam reaches Sue Ann and grabs the cross from her
hands and throws it on the ground, breaking it. The reaper
instantly releases his grip from Dean and looks around, sensing
that the spell has been broken. Roy removes his hand from Layla
and says he doesn't understand. Layla says that she doesn't feel
any different. Sue Ann kneels down by the broken cross, which
is oozing out blood, and cries out to Sam, "what have you done?!"
Sam says, "he's not your God". Confused, Layla looks up at Roy,
who, equally as confused, begins calling for Sue Ann. Sue Ann
looks up to see the reaper off in the distance and becomes very
frightened. The reaper meanwhile, has a creepy "it's about
time you, my dear, fear the reaper" kind of smile on his face.
Sue Ann turns to run but the reaper is suddenly right there
blocking her path. He puts his hand on her and drains the life
from her as Sam stands and watches. (which is kinda creepy, Sam.
Not that I don't think she deserved it but I sure wouldn't have
stood around watching it.) She goes all gray eyed and gray faced
and they add a nice little puff of air at the end of the reaper's
death touch (I guess showing us the last breath of life being
taken by the reaper? They may have done it on the other victim,
the girl in the woods, but this was the first time I noticed it,
if they did. I can't really remember if we saw her entire death
scene, or if they cut away to the guy being healed first, and
I'm too damned lazy to go back and watch that part again. I've
been watching this damned thing all day trying to do this recap.
lol. Anyway...) I think it was a nice touch, and really could have
been ended there but they let her fall to the ground and then
convulse a little before gasping for air and falling still. Sam
finally looks away in disgust (after he's just stood there and
watched the ENTIRE death take place. lol). He and Dean meet back
at Vlad the impala, with Dean seemingly a little weak as he reaches
the car (hey, it's not every day you nearly have the life sucked out
of you). Sam asks if he's ok and an exhausted Dean says, "Hell of a
week". (amen, brother). Sam says, "yeah" and that they should get
goin'". I don't think he has to tell Dean twice.
Back in the motel, the boys are readying to leave. Sam is
gathering up his things and putting them in his bag as Dean sits
quietly on the end of his bed. "What is it?", asks Sam. Dean
says it's nothing. Sam asks again, more firmly, "what is it?".
Dean asks if they did the right thing. To which Sam says, "of
course we did.". Dean softly says that it doesn't feel like it.
Just then there's a knock on the door. Sam says he'll get it
and opens the door to Layla. Dean is surprised to see her and
asks how she knew they were there. She says that Sam called
her and told her that he wanted to say goodbye. Sam says he's
going to grab a soda and leaves them alone in the room. Layla
asks where they're going and Dean says they don't know yet and
that they're work takes them all over. Layla tells him that she
went back to see Roy. Dean nods and asks her what happened.
She shakes her head and says, "nothing", as she sits on the bed.
She goes begins to relay what happened, as Dean sits down beside
her. She tells him that nothing happened when Roy touched her
forehead. Dean compassionately says he's sorry it didn't work.
She then tells him that Sue Ann has died from a stroke. Dean
says that he heard and adds that Roy is a good man and doesn't
deserve what's happened. Dean says to Layla that it must be
rough to believe in something so much and to have it disappoint
you like that. She smiles at him and asks if he wants to hear
something weird. She says that she's ok and that if you're going
to have faith you can't just have it when the miracles happen.
You have to have it when they don't. Dean half smiles at her and
asks her what she'll do now. She just smiles and shrugs and says
that god works in mysterious ways. She gently puts her hand to
his head (everyone wants to touch the pretty in this episode! Only
I'd be doing a lot more than that if I was sitting on a bed next to
him.) and says goodbye. He stands up and does his cute little
throat cleary thing and, with some tears seemingly welled in his
eyes, says that he's not much of a prayin' type but he's gonna
pray for her. She says, "well, there's a miracle right there",
and then exits. The closing shot is of Dean's sad face. (Awwwww.
Poor baby. He had so much going on in this episode and never got
one moment to enjoy the fact that he wasn't going to die.)
