As some of you know, I have a Dark Shadows/Strange Paradise cross-over
role-playing game and we still have a ton of roles left to fill so if you're
interested, please let me know!

To give you a little background, the game takes place six months prior to
Strange Paradise and after the original series of Dark Shadows ended. We still
have the following characters left (and possibly others that I just forgot to
add):

Adam - creation built by Barnabas and Julia using Dr. Lang's notes
Jennifer (last name unknown) - part of Irene's coven, something happened to her
Joe the Bartender - works at the French Leaf Cafe
Philip Desmond (I) - Jean Paul's brother
Philip Desmond (II) - Jean Paul's cousin
Dan Forrest - employee of Jean Paul
Annie Harrigan - Victim of Jean Paul, had an association with Laslo
Joe Haskell - resides at Windcliff
Chris Jennings - suffers from the werewolf curse
Amy Jennings - Chris' kid sister
Willie Loomis - works for Barnabas Collins
Tony Peterson - Collinsport lawyer, was a boyfriend of Carolyn's
Mrs. Janet Pruitt - part of Irene's coven
Mr. Pruitt - part of Irene's coven
Quito - mute servant, a gentle zombie
Raxl - main servant of Jean Paul, knows voodoo
Sabrina Stuart - former fiance of Chris
Sebastian Shaw - astrologer who showed an interest in Maggie,
Sheriff (last name unknown) - investigates Annie's murder
Sinclair - employee of the Desmond Lumber Mill
Crystal Snowden - Victim of Jean Paul under the Mark of Death
Tim Stanton - local artist at the Port French Leave
Ned Stuart - Sabrina's brother
Ada Thaxton - Jean Paul's cousin, married to Laslo
Laslo Thaxton - 2nd husband of Ada
Waldo Travers - local author, part of Irene's coven

You could say the year starts up in 1971 so we just pretend that Strange
Paradise actual coincided with that. I'm really trying to get more people
interested in Strange Paradise and writing about it is just another way for us
to keep the show alive.

Hey, Steve! You could easily be correct about this being another performer named
Pat Moffat. I was unaware of the other actress working under the same name, but
it wouldn't be the first time it's happened (even within the STRANGE PARADISE
cast). I just assumed it was the same person, as I know "our" Pat Moffat went
on to do a lot of voice-over work in later years (even providing the voice of a
computer on the infamous SF series THE STARLOST). It's hard to nail our Ms.
Moffat down, as she even changes the spelling of her name from time to time. In
SP, she is billed as Pat MOFFATT, but in many other places drops the final T and
is just Pat MOFFAT. Makes researching her that much more difficult. Anyway,
I'm glad you enjoyed the link. -Curt

"our" Pat Moffat, though? I had heard, somewhere or other, that there was
another Pat Moffat, a completely different individual from the person who played
on SP, who had been a Canadian actress. "Our" Pat lived in Toronto, not
Winnipeg as stated here, and continued to have a very active career (and may
even still be working, in fact) whereas this Pat is described as "a former
actress."

Ron,
I am so sorry for your loss of your dear Bella, you were a wonderful dad
to her and took the best care and you loved her very much. You both were
lucky to have each other.
I hope Daisy will be ok now with the loss of her best friend and sister.

My sweet little Bella crossed the Rainbow Bridge at 9:30pm.

When I got home, Bella was fine, but when we went out for our walk I
noticed her butt was dripping blood. I got her to Angell and they
felt it was cancer. Bella had lost weight...in December she was 34lbs
and last night she was 30lbs. As much as I hated it, I felt sending
her to the bridge was the best I could do. We said our goodbyes and
she kept smacking me in the mouth with her paw. She also did her old
routine for eating a cookie...she kept throwing it at me and I would
throw it back to her several times before she ate it. She laid her
head on my knee and drifted off. She will come home in 6 weeks.
Daisy refused to eat and I wonder how she will do being left alone
from now on and never to see her sister, again. I had my friends
downstairs take a last picture of us together. --

Thanks, Chris. Daisy seems fine right now, tho when we walk she now stays right
by my feet. She's not as affectionate as Bella, but I'm told in time she will
be. The people downstairs say she is quite when I'm at work so she doesn't mind
being alone.

Ron,
You are welcome. My Sierra has abandonment issues as I am her third home
so when i leave she howls. When I go out of town I have to have someone
stay with her. She has 5 cats but she has to stay out when I am not home. I
can't have her in as she loves cat poop and the vet that spayed her nicked
her bladder so sometimes she pees in her sleep! I can't get another dog as
Sierra has ball issues and would get into a fight with another dog over a
ball. However she shares her balls with the cats!
Take care and keep giving Daisy a lot of love!

I'm so sorry to hear about Bella. It's always hard to lose a pet. I know when my
beagle, Dreyfus died, my two cur pups were so sad to lose their mentor, they
wouldn't go out into the back yard unless I dragged them. It took about a month
and a half for them to become somewhat "normal."

They're fine now,but animals do mourn. Daisy will probably be clingy for a
while. Beagles are definitely pack animals and will want to be with you more.

As hard as it was, it was best that Bella didn't have to suffer.

It also took a couple of months for my sister's beagle to come to grips that her
"sister" had died. Even though my sister also has a cur dog for company.

Thanks, Cat. Daisy was a rescue...her owner died and his wife was n a nursing
home. The daughter left the dog at her parents' house chained to a 4 foot
chain. She lived under the porch in mud and her own filth. Whenever the
daughter came by she would give Daisy water and food. She barked 24/7 for help.
A neighbor gave her a towel to sleep on and her cat's food and water. Her
friend told us about her and we fought with them to release the dog to us. Poor
Daisy had over 90 bladder stones removed. When I got her she barked when left
alone, but in time she calmed down. Her and Bella didn't get along for the
first 2 years, but the last year they had a truce. So in a way Daisy is ok
alone. Plus now she gets all the attention.

Hi, Strangers! The weekend is here again, so it's time to dig deep into the
archive to bring you another Featured Link. No picture again this time, but
check this one out for a glimpse at one of Trudy Young's earlier projects:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=2jFgAAAAIBAJ&sjid=u28NAAAAIBAJ&pg=7171,9822\
24&dq=trudy-young&hl=en

The article "Young Boy and Houseboat ..." comes from Page 14 of the 9/8/67 issue
of THE SASKATOON STAR PHOENIX. It's interesting to see that at the tender age of
17, Trudy was already well-known enough in Canada to be cast as herself in a
weekly television series. Also of interest, a fellow supporting cast member in
this production was Lynn Gorman, wife of frequent STRANGE PARADISE director
George Gorman. I hope everyone enjoys this latest little tidbit. -Curt

Very cool! Trudy Young played herself in a regular TV series way back in 1967.
One wonders whether she had a career as a recording artist or pop singer at this
point. Didn't she play a singer in an early 1970s Canadian feature film?
Grasping at the tatters that are all that are left of my episodic memory these
days...

Also interesting to see that Belinda Montgomery (a native of Winnipeg, btw,
according to IMDB) appeared in this. Belinda later became a familiar face in
the 1970s on such telefilms as "The Devil's Daughter" starring Shelley Winters
and Jonathan Frid on ABC-TV Movie of the Week.

This shot is courtesy of the October 26, 1985 edition of THE SASKATOON PHOENIX,
and shows us Colin Fox and Maury Chaykin acting together a decade and a half
before their better-known collaboration on the detective drama NERO WOLFE.
Their 1985 pairing seems to be as antagonists, in a CBC production titled
CANADA'S SWEETHEART. I wonder how many times these two excellent Canadian
performers have worked together over the years. -Curt

Interesting It reminds me of the number of times actors from SP wound up
working together both before and after that series--a well known example that
comes to mind is Colin Fox's appearance in the Jack Creley film The Reincarnate,
in which Trudy Young also had a significant role.

Thanks, Curt!

Hi Rachel! I have the old VHS which I got via Amazon years ago. I just checked
and there are 3 or 4 copies ranging in price from seven bucks to fifteen bucks.

It might be available on one of those sites where people share movies but I'm
not a member of those--if you are, or know someone who is, maybe you can find
it. Unfortunately now there is another movie called "The Reincarnate" from 2007
which has no connection to SP--so you have to be careful.

I wish a restored edition would be released on DVD. Even though it is
definitely a low-budget B movie, of a kind typical in the early to mid Seventies
with the supernatural themes and liberal use of occult lore, it's probably the
only movie ever made to star Jack Creley. And that, and the Toronto locations,
makes it kind of cool to watch. If you're a Colin Fox fan, he is only in two
scenes, I think, and they are brief scenes. He looks just as he did in his
Strange Paradise days, however, so it is very cool when he does show up.

Best,

Steve

Thanks Curt for the interesting article.

To SP rules, there is an IMDB page for Robert Goodier. He appeared in several
films throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s. The last entry is for
1985. The best known film in which he played was The Apprenticeship of Dudley
Kravitz in 1974. He also appeared with Jon Granik (I think they both had minor
roles--have yet to see this film) in the 1971 controversial, low-budget prison
drama, Fortune and Men's Eyes, based on a play that had been produced in LA with
Sal Mineo and Don Johnson (back in 1969, before Johnson became famous).

Just my personal thoughts--I was very surprised many years ago when IMDB became
available and I looked up Robert Goodier on it. The surprise came from finding
him to have been a successfully employed actor in many films and television
dramas. I felt his performance on SP was sub-par, barely at the level of
community theatre. Perhaps he did better in a situation where he was allowed
multiple rehearsals and more time and space to create a character. Clearly, he
was not at his best on SP.

Hi SP Rules,

I agree. I also read the memoir of Paisley and was very sorry to hear that we
lost her. Bryan's words captured what a vivacious, warm, caring, and very
elegant lady she was. It made me regret all the more that they didn't bring her
back in another role in the subsequent storylines of the series.

Hi Rachel, I guess I missed the post for a zine. I wonder if this
developed into the book that Bryan is working on.

Hmm....but I think this was someone else and not Bryan...unless I'm mistaken
and that was Bryan's old email or something.

In my search for other shows/films with the cast of Strange Paradise, I came
across very brief info on Hatch Mill and would like to see it. Has anyone ever
seen it and if so, is it worth it? So far I haven't been able to find any pics,
vid clips, or anything. :(

Hi, gang! The member who originally posted that announcement about a potential
'zine, Gothick42, is still quite an active poster here on the message board, and
began his research into STRANGE PARADISE even before Bryan. Normally, I'd wait
for him to respond himself, but I believe he's actually on vacation at the
moment, and out of the country. Anyway, while he would be the first to tell you
that his research back in the day never reached the depth or breadth of what
Bryan has done in preparation for his book, I think Gothick42 holds the
distinction of being the first fan to do any serious research on the series
(traveling to Canada to speak with several people involved with the show's
production). For that reason, I tend to call him the father of STRANGE PARADISE
scholarship (much to his embarrassment, I'm sure). Unfortunately, his proposed
'zine never saw publication, but he has still kept up with the material he
gathered, and has offered to let me post pieces of it on Maljardin.com sometime
in the near future. Keep an eye out for the announcement here, as I'll be most
excited to let everyone know when the material goes up.

Speaking of 'zines, I believe there is another mention (somewhere in the depths
of this message board) about one that WAS published. If memory serves, it
wasn't an actual SP 'zine, but an issue of a West Coast DARK SHADOWS fanzine
which devoted an issue to STRANGE PARADISE. If anyone every unearths a copy of
that one, I'd be MOST interested to see it. -Curt
