FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LONG-AWAITED AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF FUGITIVE STAR BARRY MORSE RELEASED
"Pulling Faces, Making Noises: A Life on Stage, Screen & Radio"
(Portland, Oregon, July 2004)— Actor and director Barry Morse, with Robert
E. Wood and Anthony Wynn, announce the release of the long-awaited
autobiography of the performer, entitled PULLING FACES, MAKING NOISES: A
LIFE ON STAGE, SCREEN & RADIO. Published by iUniverse, Inc., the book is
available through major booksellers in North America and the United
Kingdom, and online via the worldwide web.
PULLING FACES, MAKING NOISES runs 424 pages in length with 50 photographs
(most never before publicly available). The Foreword is by Academy
Award-winning actor Martin Landau, his co-star in the classic science
fiction television series Space: 1999. Martin says, "Barry's life is a
virtual history of the twentieth century…and deserves to be read by
everyone on the planet, theatre-folk and civilian alike." David Greene,
long-time American and Canadian Producer/Director also gives praise:
"Barry Morse is one of the most brilliant actors in the world, possessing
a superhuman range of characterizations." In a career spanning more than
seven decades, Barry Morse has played more than 3,000 roles on radio,
television, stage and in film; along the way encountering such people as:
George Bernard Shaw, Katharine Hepburn, Noël Coward, Alfred Hitchcock,
Peter Cushing, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, and many more. He stands as
the only five-time winner of Canada's Best Television Actor award, is a
former Artistic Director of the famed Shaw Festival of Canada, and even
served as Professor of Drama at Yale University!
Born in London, England to a cockney family, Barry was just 15 years old
upon winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art—the
youngest student ever to enter that institution. He appeared on the
earliest live television broadcasts of the BBC in 1937 and made his West
End London stage debut in School for Slavery and Crisis In Heaven directed
by John Gielgud. His movie career began opposite British comedian Will
Hay in The Goose Steps Out. Barry is probably best known for his
television roles as ‘Lt. Philip Gerard’ in The Fugitive with David Janssen
and in Space: 1999 as ‘Prof. Victor Bergman’ with Barbara Bain and Martin
Landau and is the first star from either series to release a memoir. Other
notable television appearances include the miniseries The Winds of War and
War and Remembrance with Robert Mitchum; The Martian Chronicles with Rock
Hudson; and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story. On Broadway, he
starred in the title role of Hadrian VII as well as directing the
groundbreaking Staircase starring Eli Wallach and Milo O’Shea. For the
past two decades Barry—between film and television performances—has toured
in his hit one-man stage show Merely Players throughout the U.S., Canada
and England. The show is a tour de force which examines the lives of a
series of actors and others from Elizabethan times to present day.
Barry Morse has been joined by two co-writers: Robert E. Wood is author of
the book Space: 1999—The Future Is Fantastic! and Anthony Wynn’s play,
Bernard and Bosie: A Most Unlikely Friendship, premiered in the US earlier
this year. Together, Robert and Anthony have previously co-written Merely
Players: The Scripts, based on the one-man show starring Barry Morse.
PULLING FACES, MAKING NOISES: A LIFE ON STAGE, SCREEN & RADIO tells the
extraordinary life story of Barry Morse in his own words and unmistakable
voice. He is an entertainer who has led a career more diverse and vast
than almost any other in history; Barry is one of the most versatile pros
the performing trade has ever known. More than just a memoir, PULLING
FACES, MAKING NOISES is a testament to a theatrical era which will not
come again, and of an outstanding actor and human being whose favorite
role, or challenge, has always been the next one.
Available in both soft and hard cover editions, PULLING FACES, MAKING
NOISES is available through major online outlets, including Barnes and
Noble booksellers (www.BarnesandNoble.com), Amazon (www.Amazon.com), and

mortar stores. The trade paperback edition is ISBN 0-595-32169-0 and is

One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps
someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.
