A whole site devoted to my old favourite. With my kids away this
weekend I have had chance to 'surf', never thinking that anyone else
remembered this fab series. Thanks for all info included and I am
aiming to purchase my own copy as soon as I get off this PC.

There is information about Belle & Sebastien, Joe, and Bleep and
Booster at the Little Gems site which is
http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/tombstone/890/main-page.htm
They also have information about The Singing, Ringing Tree (with many
great pics) and may have something on The Tinder Box soon.

Hi All.

I have just joined this group.

I discovered the TSRT website about a year ago.

Like most people, the sheer magic of this film is my most abiding memory,
along with the fear of the dwarf!

I would love to hear more info about the Tales From Europe films.
Particularly the Tinder Box.

Any websites about Sebastian and Belle?

Does anyone remember the kids cartoon called Joe?

What about Bleep and Booster from Blue Peter, any pictures or websites?

There is a wonderful new Singing Ringing Tree website at
http://www.fortunecity.com/lavender/tombstone/890/srtree/srtree-
index.htm

It has the story and many pictures, and is part of a bigger website
devoted to children's television.

I was disappointed in last nights programme. They spent too much time
on the opinions of the commentators and not enough time on the
programmes themselves. I would have liked to see an outline of the
story and showing the most memorable/scariest bits, like when the
dwarf flooded the rocky chasm.

Instead they showed that silly parody from The Fast Show which isn't
even funny. Arabella Weir really irritates me. I remember her on
another TV nostalgia show where she made fun of all dubbed European
shows from the 60s, saying that they were all unwatchable rubbish.

They could have shown Jane Horrock's parody of Muffin the
Mule. "Hello children everywhere, except for poor children who
haven't got a television yet". Now that WAS funny.

Andrew.

Check out UK Channel Four today from 2030 BST

The Top 100 Childrens' TV of All Time has got to include The Singing
Ringing Tree - placing in the Top 10 at least. May have to be shown
well after the 9pm watershed and carry viewer discretion warning for
the over 35's, but hey, what's a few disturbed night's sleep for a
bit of nostalgia!?

TSRT was really magical and spooky at the same time. Can't remember
episodes - always thought there was only one episode which the BBC
seemed to screen at six-weekly intervals.

I have only found one 30-something who recalls watching TSRT and most
people are convinced I imagined the whole story (some imagination!).

I also remember Paulus The Wooden Gnome, Children of The Stones, Time
Barrier; Mr Trimble (pet Goldfish called Glug); Robinson Crusoe
(never caught the premiere); The Double Deckers; Belle and Sebastian;
Why Don't You . . . Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Do
Something Less Boring Instead . . . The Flashing Blade and plenty
more ! And to think those were the days when TV closed at 11am for
the testcard, returning for a whole 15 minutes at lunchtime for Watch
with Mother! So much variety packed into 90 minutes !

Anyway, see what you make of tonight's sighting of TSRT

Hi!

Am interested in finding copies of the Russian 'City of Craftsmen' shown in

Thanks.

I have just bought a copy of The Singing Ringing Tree from MovieMail
in England. It cost £12.99 and the postage was only £1. I was able to
use a UK postal order (I don't have a credit card or a cheque book).
I was very pleased with the service.

As far as I can tell this is the original BBC version, or as near as
we are going to get. I thought that the BBC version was dubbed, but
now it seems that I was wrong. It is narrated by Antony Bilbow who
explains what each character is saying, and the German dialogue can
be heard in the background. Now I understand what it means when it is
said that the programme was written by Peggy Miller. She must have
written the narration.

When I went to the British Film Institute in London to see the film
it had English subtitles but a narration was available over
headphones. The woman who was narrating had a very beautiful voice
and sounded very familiar, as if I had heard her on TV when I was a
child.

The actress who played Penny was also in The Sound of Music. I don't
remember The Double Deckers at all. I expect Jane Seymour was very
young in that. Did she have hair that she could sit on in those days?
(I don't mean pubic hair, I mean long head hair down to her bum)

I remember my girlfriend in that era. She had long hair all the way
down her back - and none on her head. Seriously, though, she was a
red-head. She didn't have any hair but her head was red.

I was going to suggest 'The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe' and
also 'Lost in Space'. I used to fancy Penny from 'Lost in Space'. I
can't remember Julia from 'The White Horses' but I remember the girl
in 'Follyfoot Farm'.

Do you remember Jan Francis in 'The Long Chase'. She had long hair
and I really liked her.

VOTE FOR THE SINGING RINGING TREE ON CHANNEL 4

Channel 4 are going to do a TV programme about the 100 favourite
kid's TV programmes. They want people to vote for their favourites on
the channel4 website. There are 100 programmes to choose from and you
must select 10. I voted for SRT of course and here is my complete
list, not in order of preference.

15 Captain Pugwash
28 Dr Who
34 Tales from the Riverbank
39 How
55 Mr Benn
59 Noggin the Nog
60 Pinky and Perky
79 The Singing Ringing Tree
89 Tomorrow People
95 White Horses

This is the URL of the page
http://www.channel4.com/greatest/kidstv/index.html

The results of your vote will be screened in 100 Greatest Kids' TV
Shows towards the end of the summer. You may have seen an advert for
this on channel4. I'm going to record it because it will say
something about The Singing Ringing Tree.

Andrew.

Is this the book by Selina Hastings? I have read the book and the
story seems to differ considerably from the original German film. And
yet I think the author wrote that she followed the story of the BBC
version quite closely. Which made me think that the BBC version was
heavily edited from the German original, especially when the BBC
version was 'written' by Peggy Miller. The book only has about 12
pages of text and 12 of illustrations.

Which actress would you choose for the role of the
princess if there was to be a remake of The Singing
Ringing Tree? My choice would be Eva Haberman who is a
German actress recently seen on TV in the sci-fi
series Lexx.

I have included a picture of her as an attachment.

The music that occurs in the film 'The Singing Ringing Tree' is very
beautiful and evocative. Someone who has a copy of the video or DVD,
who knows a little about music and has the right equipment should be
able to produce a small MIDI file that all of us would be able to
enjoy and I would be able to put on my website, perhaps to play while
people read the text.

Imagine you were on a bus. Someone's mobile starts to ring. You
think "Hold on a minute, I recognize that tune. It's the tune to 'The
Singing, Ringing Tree'!". It could happen. I don't know anything
about mobiles, I haven't got one, but I'm sure that someone could
create the tune.

I finally bought my copy from Amazon.com. I got it on DVD and it's magic. The Colours are fantastic. Strange seeing it in colour for the first time. My friend brought it over from the States for me saved on the postage it worked around £17. Well worth it though. Thanks for the info.

I am still not sure if the BBC dubbed and narrated version of The
Singing Ringing Tree is now available. The BBC version, which many
say has been lost, was narrated by Antony Bilbow and 'written' and
presented by Peggy Miller. If anyone can check this by looking on the
cover of a video or DVD that they buy please let us know.
