Emma I can't remember much about the programme (it was a series on BBC in the 60s) except that I remember absolutely loving it. I thought it was the most magical thing I ever came across and for many years would ask people of about my age if they ever remember the singing ringing tree. Very few people do, but there was a radio programme not so long ago on Radio 4 about people's memories of it. After that I did a search of the internet and here I am. For my own part now in my late 40s I am addicted to computer games and believe that the tale would make a marvellous game. If only I knew how to program games!!
Good luck with your thesis.

I was so pleased to find a site devoted to the SRT. I only saw the
film when it was recommended to me by my film lecturer, and I have
to admit I was charmed from the first. My reason for writing this is
not entirely to add to the praise, because I have made the SRT the
focus of my M.A thesis.I am very interested in how everyone came to
see the film, and the effect it had on them, whether as a child or
adult. For those of you who are interested, my thesis looks at the
difficult period of history in which SRT was made, the theories that
psychologists, philosophers and any other cultural commentators
bandy about fairy tales, and the history of fairy tales in Europe.
Quite a wide scope, but the facts that keep coming up about SRT and
fairy tale films make it all worth while.I appreciate that you are
all busy people, but any tips or comments you want to pass on will
be greatly welcome.
All the best, Emma Dyson.
P.S There is a fascinating account of the first screenings of SRT
and the theories behind fairy tales in general in Cinema and the
Realms of Enchantment, a BFI Working Paper published by the BFI in
1993.
