I watched Earth last night (I really like that DVR) and have had enough.
The science part of the science fiction is poor, the ship can't get a
full charge of power from flying thru a star? They can't get enough
power to run the stargate? For good science fiction the science has
to be good. The Star Gate concept works because it's something so far
beyond our technology I have to say "why not?". That the ship could
not get enough energy from a trip though a star? That's a LOT of
energy to fly through and not harvest enough, should I repeat "A LOT"?
We left science behind at that point and jumped full time on the
cheating wives -bad guy taking the others identity 'soap opera'
format. I can't even pretend it's SF any more other than it's on a
spaceship. Of course we could have a character 'wake up' 4 seasons
from now and find out it was a bad dream or someone's autistic kid's
fantasy or any other classical TV ploy you care to use.
Too bad, the concept had promise but the SciFi network (the one that
brought us all big time wrestling) has changed it's name and put
daytime dramas (soap operas?) on a spaceship and hung the "Star
Gate" label on it. I think the network decision makers spent too much
time watching "Lost" and "Heros".
Good bye SGU, and good luck with the really different take on
cheating wife scenario. I think I'll let the DVR record "Good Eats"
on the Food Channel during that time slot.
