Hi, Brian, and welcome to the club!!
The "urban legend" is that the original opening credits (Marty's
funeral) were lost en route to or from the U.S. when they were sent
for altering the name of the show (it aired as "My Partner the Ghost"
here), so when the series was re-aired in England in the mid-70s they
needed to come up with new opening credits because the originals were
somewhere in America. I don't really accept that theory because of
the fact that the episodes were intact, so why weren't the opening
credits? My personal opinion is that the "powers that be" maybe
thought having the scene in the cemetery at the opening might turn
some people off. I do remember reading that there was considerable
controversy over people thinking parts of the show made light of
death.
Welcome aboard, hope to hear from you often!
Best,
Karen
