Warren Zevon shares January 24th as a birthday with Vic Reeves.
I don't know how well-known this is outside of the U.S., but last
August Warren was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Initially
given 2 months to live by his doctors, it seemed highly unlikely he
would live to see Thanksgiving, let alone his 56th birthday. As I
write this (Jan. 18), it appears he WILL get to celebrate what will
most likely be his last birthday.
Warren, by the way, wrote one of the greatest "ghost story" songs in
the history of rock and roll: "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner"
from 1978's "Excitable Boy" album. The plot of that song would've
made an interesting "Randall and Hopkirk" episode (in fact, you can
see a little hint of the song in "Murder Ain't What It Used to Be!"
from the original series...Bugsy was searching "for the man who'd
done him in" and he DID have a Thompson gun!).
By the way, Jools Holland (who will be at Vic's wedding according to
newspaper reports) was also born on January 24.
Happy birthday to the January gang!!
