JIm,

Mike Rupert here.

I've been lurking a little and been in and out without much time to say anything to the group.

One thing that I have been wondering about is whether or not you have found out if Keith Andes is alive. If he was, are you going to try to interview him.

Great!  I'm glad my lil' website mention in my TV GUIDE SEARCH cover item paid off with at least ONE new "interested party"!  I figured ol' Don Harden would'a found that eBay mention first-- but I guess he's busy at DragonCon!  ;)  (Inside joke, Kevin!) Glad you're on board!  Feel free to join in the eGroups discussion at any time!

I just hope things continue to grow so I can find more things related to the show. I Seem to remeber having some of the clips from Lincoln enterprises from years ago But have no idea what shape they may be in or if they are even still around But I'm going to look in the box I used to have them in.

I posted that question to alt.obituaries a few months ago when we were
first wondering if he was still alive, and despite many anecdotes about
him no one could come up with a death date, so I'm pretty sure he's out
there somewhere still alive.

I did some checking for Jim Alexander a few months ago as to whether Keith
Andes is still with us.  I did find an item saying that someone got an
autograph from him as late as October 2000.

I'm sure Jim will have more information for us on the interview projects he
is doing in whatever spare time he can scrounge up, but he is still not quite
finished with his follow up interviews with Ginny Golden.  After those are
completed, I'm sure Jim won't mind making inquiries of Mr. Andes, who
appeared as Dr. Barnett in the final Probe Control set episodes (also the
voice of "Birdman" and was Akuta in the classic Trek episode "The Apple").

We need to do a formal page for these, but I posted the theme pieces in mp3
format on the website. Click on each link below to get them, or paste them
into your browser, or paste them into your file download program (such as
Gozilla or Get Right.)

The pieces are off the Let Us Prey 16mm backup print, so the close theme is
clean (without Ed telling us who is on Johnny that night.)

Break is the piece of music that follows the network commercials at 10:30
(9:30 central) and let the local stations know it was their turn to run
commercials.

Return is the music that played after those local commercials aired and we
returned to the show.

Hi folks:  I've started a new folder in the "Files" section called (along
with the link):

SEARCH Easter Eggs

So far, I've included two audio WAV files, both from "Countdown to Panic."
Near the beginning of the episode, there is a hospital voiceover calling for
a "Dr. Burns."  (An inside reference to the writer of the episode, Judy
Burns?)

At first, I thought this might have been a funny coincidence.  But later in
the episode, just after Lockwood and Linden first meet and go into the
elevator, we hear another voiceover calling for a "Dr. Stevens."  (Another
inside reference to executive producer Leslie Stevens?)

Easter Eggs are those little hidden things put into movies and shows, etc. as
inside jokes by the production people (or others).  Sometimes we viewers
catch them, sometimes we don't

For example, Alfred Hitchcock would sometimes put himself into some of his
movies, such as the famous humorous shot of him attempting to catch a bus
over the director's credit in "North by Northwest."

Gene Roddenberry himself did the voiceover of the ship's galley officer in
"Charlie X" who reported to Kirk that the meatloafs had somehow turned into
turkeys.  Roddenberry said that was "his Hitchcock" for Star Trek.

There may be other SEARCH Easter Eggs we haven't found yet.  Gosh knows we
still have some six episodes we haven't found on video yet.  If anyone else
has found some SEARCH Easter Eggs, go ahead and add them to the folder.  Or,
if you're not sure it's a bona fide Easter Egg, mention it on the regular
Mailing List before posting.

Thanks.

Kevin,

Would that this were popular enough to be covered by other groups!

Other than off of original video I don't think I have even heard anyone
finding this on album or CD just yet despite the fact that Dominic Frontiere
is one of the premiere composers in entertainment.

Leslie Stevens must have really done something to make Warner Bro's angry at
him considering how deeply they seem to have buried this series.

Thanks for your links to the thene song and the rest

of the pilot movie and its not in good enough
condition to make even a cassette tape from. So many

Michael's comment brings to mind previous discussion on this list about "the
'Incubus' curse."  LA Times on 'Incubus'

By association, could this be one of the reasons for the strange current fate
of SEARCH?  Then again, "Incubus" was thought to have been completely lost
until a well-worn print was discovered in France.

If "Incubus" could be rediscovered, certainly the SEARCH series has a chance?

I really thought I was the only person who remember this show and am
I glad to find out I am wrong.

And now that I am on this mailing list, I am more convinced than ever
that there are many more Search fans around. Here's a thought - I
was at the SEARCH entry at IMDB and notice that
http://www.probecontrol.com is not listed in the Miscellaneous Site
category. May be if the site is added there might be more fans who
will realize that they are not alone.

Come to think of it, are there any plans to apply to add the site to

Anyway, thanks to all of you who have put in so much time and effort
to collect the info. I really enjoy reading all of it!

I have submitted the site to IMDB many times, and have not gotten them to
update.

Yahoo search uses Google, and we do get hits from Google.

Wow - I guess I must have been lucky with IMDB when I submitted a
site I co-run. But then it was ages ago.

As to Yahoo, you are right - thank goodness it is linked to Google!
But I also found that my site (on Man From U.N.C.L.E.) gets a lot of
independent hits from Yahoo too. The bad thing about Yahoo is that
it does takes a couple of months to submit and sometimes a couple of
tries.

Hi Connie: If you (or anyone else on the list) are interested, we
also have the audio of ENDS OF THE EARTH, which I taped on a reel-to-
reel recorder back in 1973 when NBC re-ran it! It will have to do
until we can find the video of it.

I transferred it to audio CD and the sound is surprisingly clear,
much better than you might think. John has a copy of the audio CD,
so you can check with him for a copy too. He and I also have on
audio CD the five other episodes we don't have on video, including:

MOONROCK
LIVE MEN TELL TALES
A HONEYMOON TO KILL
THE BULLET
ONE OF OUR PROBES IS MISSING

(There is also a second audio version of LIVE MEN from Jim, this one
includes the NBC commercials.)

Thanks,

Recently I've been making inquiries about SEARCH on another mailing list, a
Yahoo club called "Fantastic Television."

Fantastic Television Yahoo Club

I posted a link to our site so folks could see what we're doing.  There have
been some interesting SEARCH comments made in response to my initial post, so
I'll reprint them below.

One item of note is that SEARCH also aired in Costa Rica.  And the BBC
changed the name of the series to "Search Control" apparently because a
children's show in the UK was already named "Search."

=====================================
dghprobe3 8/15/01 2:08 am

Hi folks, Don here and thanks to everyone for an interesting and fun group.
Does anyone remember the SEARCH series which ran during the early 70's on
NBC-TV?  It starred Hugh O'Brian, Tony Franciosa and Doug McClure as private
investigators of the future. It was produced by Leslie Stevens (of "The Outer
Limits") and Robert H. Justman (of "Star Trek").

After it's first run during 1972-73, the show disappeared completely, except
for the 2 hour pilot movie about the missing gem collection, which airs
occasionally.  Does anyone else here remember the show or have tapes or
memorabilia of it? There is a website about the series at
http://www.probecontrol.com

=====================================
guynsd1955 (46/M/San Diego) 8/15/01 1:21 pm

Yes, I remember that series, and I loved it! I looked at the Web Site, and
instantly remembered it. I watched the series pilot, PROBE, and thought it
was so cool. If I remember correctly (I didn't Scour the site) the PROBE
pilot was made as a Movie of the Week, and later turned into a series. It was
a great series, and I was upset at its cancellation.
=====================================
moonbase_alphan (F/Moonbase Alpha) 8/15/01 1:22 pm

I remember it being shown over here in England on the BBC back in the 70's.
For some reason the Beeb decided to call it 'SEARCH CONTROL'.

It remnded me of 'The Time Tunnel' with the boys back at the lab watching
what the heroes were up to on a big screen. Wasn't Burgess (The Penguin)
Meredith the guy in charge of the lab? (I must go and look at that web-site
that you mention, Don - thanks for the link).

=====================================
guynsd1955 (46/M/San Diego) 8/15/01 1:41 pm

Yes, Burgess Merideth was the guy in control of the main control room. He
directed the activities of the spys. The had speakers in their ears, mics in
their teeth, and a pendant/ring that was a camera.

=====================================
Calscholar (28/M/UC Berkeley)
8/15/01 5:51 pm
Oh, yes I remember SEARCH, in fact, I still have the single series periemer
movie that aired on American television.  I recorded some years back in the
late [19]80s when it aired as a regular movie on my local independent
channel.  I still have the video recording of the movie.  I could tell that
the movie was intended to be a preview of a up-coming television series the
why everything was formated and expecting. I was disappointed to learn that
was the only sample of the programme.  It was great idea and still could be
used to-day, but with all the hi-tech gadgets of to-day eg. PDAs, eye-glasses
with camera.
=====================================
shemp472000 (M/CHICAGO) 8/15/01 7:53 pm

If you don't blink, you'll spot Jacklyn Smith as an airline stewardess in
that TV_Movie pilot for SEARCH. Before she was an angel. SEARCH was a
rotating series that aired every 3 weeks with two other shows ("Madigan" and
"Cool Million") airing the other 2 weeks. This rotating schedual was popular
for a while because it allowed producers more time to spend on each episode.
However I think it hurt the rating because audiences couldn't follow the
series every week. SEARCH was one of my favorites although I didn't believe
the technology existed that they used.
=====================================
edshifres (45/M/Hollywood, CA) 8/15/01 9:27 pm

I remember SEARCH (1972) very well. I saw every episode. Hugh O'Brian,
Burgess Meredith, Angel Tompkins, Byron Chung, Albert Popwell. I listed
thossome of that series regular actors just from memory.
=====================================
dghprobe3 8/15/01 9:51 pm

Hi folks: Jaclyn Smith did indeed appear on the SEARCH pilot, as shemp472000
mentioned. Another Charlie's Angel, Cheryl Ladd, also appeared in some of the
episodes, but she was known then as Cheryl Stoppelmoor. Dabney Coleman (of
"Slap Maxwell") also had an early role on a SEARCH episode.

SEARCH was a rotating series, but it rotated within itself. Hugh O'Brian
would star one week, then Tony Franciosa the next week, then Doug McClure the
next, then back to O'Brian again. It was similar to "The Name of the Game,"
which rotated different stars in the same series. SEARCH was not part of the
NBC Mystery Movie, although any confusion is understandable since 1972 was
(gosh!) some 29 years ago...
=====================================
BETO01DIABLO 8/18/01 7:04 pm

I do remember it too...I remember I used to dislike the Tony Franciosa´s
episodes. I was in School when this show was transmited here in Costa Rica.

=====================================
edshifres (45/M/Hollywood, CA) 8/18/01 9:21 pm

I think that the Hugh O'Brian episodes were the better ones and he was
featured more than Franciosa or McClure. McClure episodes were the fewest, I
believe.

=====================================
redwall435 8/19/01 4:56 pm

CHERLY LADD WAS ALSO ONE OF THE SINGING VOICES ON THE THEME AND ADDITIONAL
MUSIC ON JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS!
=====================================
dghprobe3 9/6/01 3:14 am

Reply to BETO01DIABLO: Do you recall roughly when you saw SEARCH air in Costa
Rica? We are trying to find episodes of the SEARCH series on video. We have
found some from Japan, Australia and New Zealand, but we haven't found all
the episodes yet...

Inquiries to sci-fi fans in Costa Rica might help us flush out a few more
episodes. It might help to know generally when it ran there.
=====================================
meglos_lives (M/Zolfa-Thura) 9/6/01 6:11 am

'Search' did air in England in the 70's but the BBC changed its name to
'Search Control' over here because of a homegrown childrens TV show which was
also called 'Search'.

These two photos were posted on a Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea mailing
list (I like all the genre shows.)

I am assuming they are real (sorry...that's the journalist in me).

If they get published, I think they will become some of the most famous
photos of the 21st century.

I think it's going to be a long time before I can bear to look at the
skyline again, as I go about town.

Did anyone on this list manage to tape this show when it aired back in March
2001?  If anyone can send me a dub of this show (which I believe has been
cancelled), please contact me or this list.  I find it quite interesting.
Thanks, Don H.

X-FILES PRODUCER DID TV PILOT SHOW
IN WHICH AIRCRAFT HIT WORLD TRADE CENTER

<snip>

PLOT:
The two Byers head for the airport to try to find the explosives in the
aircraft. Both board the plane, but cannot find explosives, using hydrocarbon
"sniffer" devices. They realize that the airplane will be remote controlled,
just like Bert's car was. Talking by phone to the Gunmen's office, Byers asks
Langly and Frohike to hack into the aircraft controls. They do and discover
that the plane is programmed to crash into the World Trade Center. Bert
enters the cockpit and tries to warn the aircrew, but they don't believe him.
Making a lunge, he deactivates the autopilot and the crew realizes that they
are not in control. They have 22 minutes before they hit the building.

Are we all going to get together in a chat room on tomorrow night and
talk about this? That would be fun, at least for a short while.

What chat room, where and when? Thursday from 1pm to 11pm? Don't normally do
the chat rooms but would love to in this case --- this has been such an
unrelenting week, I crave to talk about something that does not involve
airplanes and terrorists or my job.

On the Yahoo groups page for Probe, there is a chat function on the left
hand side. We could agree to a time and then all sign in. I'm open for
anything after 5:30pm CDT. You have to use IE with the chat function,
however.

There are lots of different ways to chat. AOL's Instant Messenger
has a chat function, so does ICQ. IRC is good also...just have to
know which server you are on.

Haven't used Yahoo's Chat though...whatever works for everyone...do
it. Just keep us informed via this mailing list where everybody
lands.

I hope to be there. Even though my DSL worked for a full 12 hours
after the disaster, it is now down as a part of major Northeast
inturruptions due to the attack. A friend in NC is giving me access
to his unlimited $12.95/month dialup service until I can get back, so
we shall see. (He is very happy with them, so here is a free plug for
them www.surfbest.com )

Let us know what time you will land on the chat. We should all give
at least a handshake at 10PM EDT for when the stinger first rang out
across the airwaves 29 years ago.

Let us know where to meet and when. I have AOL Instant Messenger, or
we could try the "Chat" feature on this mailing list. (There is a
link to "Chat" on the left side of our Yahoo list home page.)
Someone may need to volunteer to be an overall moderator while the
rest of us enter and leave the chat at different times.

We could let tonight be a "dry run" sort of thing and decide if this
something we should try to do once a month, or on a weekend day, etc.

If everyone wants to meet in the Yahoo group chatroom (link below) at
9:45pm EDT/8:45pm CDT/7:45pm MT/6:45 PT, I'm game. We can talk till the
hour chimes, and then give a toast to the anniversary of Search.
Remember, you should use Internet Explorer for Yahoo chat.

Terrorists tried to fly a plane via remote control into the World Trade Center on an episode of The Lone Gunman too.  Should we investigate FOX network?  Seriously, terrorists are not terribly imaginative people - it should not surprise us that they just did what other persons had already thought of before.

Hi Mike: I was just wondering if anyone else would pick up on the
irony. Sounds like something Chris ("X-Files") Carter would come up
with. By the way, someone contacted me and will be sending me a dub
of that pilot episode of "The Lone Gunmen" (that title alone suggests
conspiracy theories, so I place the blame on Carter to begin with).
It should be interesting. :-)

In the meantime, our thoughts and prayers should go out to the
victims and families of the events of what some are now calling "Rude
Tuesday."
