Any device built for this purpose, would have to be very limited in its
effects and would only affect a small target like a building if it went off
inside it. The energy required to send an EM pulse or its equivalent would
make such a device far too large to transport.

I would take this article with a huge truckload of salt. Even a nuclear
event created EM pulse has a fairly limited range. It is possible to send
out a jamming signal which would impede radio etc, but this would have no
effect on fibre optics and little on shielded cables systems or buried
cables etc

Besides, possession of the technology required to build such a device would
surely mean you could build far better mechanisms, since, you would need
power cells smaller and orders of magnitude better than currently available,
together with new broadcasting technology. Not only that, you would need
some way of shielding your own systems from damage !!

Hi Ian: Don here and it was great to hear from you. Thanks for your
comments on the UPI "e-bomb" article.

I guess we sometimes need to be reminded that the phrase "military
intelligence" is one of the most notorious oxymorons of all.

By the way, isn't "Matra" one of those companies owned (at least in
part) by our old friend Saddam Hussein?

Subject: Search/ Name of the Game Relationship
dmanmetz@...

A couple of months back I posted a message (333) about Search from a 1981
book about television detectives. In the write up, it compared Search to the
1968-1970 TV series called "Name of the Game" To refresh your memory Name of
the Game had three rotating leads (Gene Barry, Tony Franciosa, Robert
Stack). The Franciosa episodes were produced Leslie Stevens, and Name of the
Game came on NBC also. With completely different characters and premise, I
guess we can look at Search as kinda of sequel to Name of the Game.
Recently, I stumbled on a site called "Jump the Shark". This site has
hundreds of TV shows and when they went bad (Jumping the shark, Get it?)
Fans actually give the imput for this site. You can also post your thoughts
for the television show. I checked and as usual there was not an entry for
Search. I checked Name of the Game, and there were five entries for that
show. Judging from the comments made by
from the imputs, people mixed Name of the Game up with Search. Some people
thought Hugh O'brian and Doug Mcclure starred in Name of the Game and in one
case, someone comments on how Franciosa played the same character on the "way
ahead of it's time Probe TV series". Don't let me ruin for you. Check out
the site and read comments for Name of the Game. The address is
http://jumptheshark.com/shrkatoz.htm. The site claims that it takes 3 to 5
days to post a vote for a show. What I have found out is that it takes about
a month. I posted a vote for Search last week, so look for it in about 2 or 3
weeks. Maybe we can genrate some talk and information on Search.

Trivia: During the 1972-1973 season Search went up against Cannon on CBS and
the Julie Andrews Hour on ABC. In January 1973, the Julie Andrews hour moved
to Saturday and Search had to go up against the legal drama called Owen
Marshall for the rest of the season. That series starred Arthur Hill and a
"pre 6 Million Dollar Man" Lee Majors. Today is also the first telecast of
my least favorite Search episode: "Let us Prey". Well, gotta go, hope you
enjoy the Jump the shark site.

Chris--

Thanks for the mail re: JUMP THE SHARK. I'd heard about it and took a quick
peek
once, and I believe the name of the site (which, from what I remember) centers
in
on the specific point when once-good TV Shows started to go bad. The site is
named for the HAPPY DAYS episode where Fonzie attempts a daring water-skiing
stunt where he actually ramp-jumps over a shark. Evidently this episode is
considered the "moment" when HAPPY DAYS started to go south (personally, I think
it was never as good after the First Season).

It's interesting that folks were confusing NAME OF THE GAME and SEARCH. Was it
the "rotating leads" concept, or the involvement of Franciosa, I wonder?

Anyway-- thanks for "preaching the gospel" and getting the name'a SEARCH out
there, once again!

It's amazing how Search just disappeared off the face of the Earth over the
years. I remember in College, somebody came into the room and started
looking at the different pictures I had on the wall. He started looking at
the Search pictures I had up, and after a few seconds his face brightened
and he said "I thought I had imagined this show!"

And this was in 1979 or 1980.

Howdy folks, Don again.  I can't promise an exact date, but soon you should
be able to see some new SEARCH filmclip scans.

I have almost finished scanning my collection of clips from "Live Men Tell
Tales," a Bianco episode we don't have on video.  I plan to send them to
Bryan for posting at http://probecontrol.com as soon as I can.

Included with these will be some clapboard shots, which Bryan posts in a
special production shot section.

To give everyone a small preview, below is a shot of the main heavy of this
episode, Mr. Stonestreet (Torin Thatcher), at his headquarters with two of
his armed henchmen.  (Stonestreet is on the right.)

Hello everyone and Happy New Year !

Just thought you may like to know that I have been in touch with
Mike Walston re his Scanner replica sets that Jim mentioned (Post 326)
but unfortunately he tells me that he will not be making any more of
these or the rather nice UFO SHADO badge sets.
Mike says that the raw materials he used are no longer available so
he is now busy making a model of a Borg cube which he hopes to offer
on Ebay in February.

I'd come across these sites quite a while back, but since I don't
have any of my old links, I had to track them down again. Suprisingly,
they're still operational.

SCI-FI TV SEARCH site
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Nebula/9742/shows/search.html

Network & Cable TV Guide SEARCH site
http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/9348/search.htm

They're both just quick overviews of the series. I put up links to
them on my old 'SEARCH Message Board':

http://www.insidetheweb.com/messageboard/mbs.cgi/mb315284

I'm equally shocked it's still there! Abandoned free sites tend to
disappear quickly on the net.

Wow. Glad I got my Scanner last year! On another note, I have a friend
who is going to be producing the SHADO badges for me at some point, I
got one from Mike but he balked at doing wholesale on them so I lined up
another supplier. Doubt they could do much with the scanner though.

Hey Guys!

Is it possible for someone who's not in our group to order Search episodes?
The reason why I'm asking is this: Jackie Patterson, an acquaintance of mine
from the Mannix and TV Westerns lists, is in touch with Jack Ging and
tracking down all of Mr. Ging's TV appearances for him--she's very
interested in acquiring a copy of "Countdown to Panic".
Please let me know if this is possible. Thank you!

Right, Don?

Of course-- we'd be EXCEPTIONALLY interested in Mr. Ging's recollections of

As I understand it PROBE stands for Programmed Retrieval Operations
and the B.E part is top secret. Can I suggest that the full title
could be Programmed Retrieval Operations Bio Enhanced; ie, the audio
and dental implants which would obviously be top secret.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this ?
Of course in reality Leslie Stevens probably never came up with a
full title but it`s nice to fill the gaps !

My thoughts:  EXCELLENT idea!

Frankly, I forgot what (was it Don Harden?) we came up with previously, that I liked so much-- but "bio-enhanced" really rings true!  The phrase also explains why the "B.E." phrase would be potentially TOP SECRET to non World Securities personnel!  It's only too bad that we will probably never know what it REALLY stands for...
------------------------------------
>... Of course in reality Leslie Stevens probably never came up with a full title but it`s nice to fill the gaps!
-------------------------------------
Y'know-- I hate to disagree, but I just can't believe that Stevens would've been at a loss.  I mean-- look at all of us here on the list.  At least two or three great suggestions have been made as to what "B.E." might have stood for.  And while I have a lot of admiration for all'a you, and while Our Man Stevens may not have been a perfect human being (what did Angel call him?  "Power-Mad", or some-such?)-- I can't believe that we can do "better" than him, and that he didn't have SOMETHING in mind.

Of course, if stumped, he always could've assigned the task to another writer or creative-type.

No.  I refuse to believe that there was never anything in mind for the "B.E.".  If a team of creative people can build a whole series areound such a great concept, then I have to believe that this task would have been child's-play for them.

Even a 14-year-old Jim Alexander dreamed up the rather poor
Space and

My guess as a 6-th grade kid was that the B.E. was "By Electronics. Sweet,

Hmm. There might be a little truth to the above, but then again, I'm
not a member of the Captain Action Mailing List

PS to Jim: I'll be mailing you an audio CD of your tape of "Live Men
Tell Tales" with NBC commercials very shortly, so look out for it.
Take care.

Open message to Jim Alexander and British members of this mailing list:

I found a web page where someone mentions that some of the newer United
Kingdom VCRs can play both PAL (European) and NTSC (American) formats.  Can
anyone confirm this?  Does anyone know if any such dual-format VCRs are
available in the U. S.?

This would greatly help alleviate conversion problems in sending tapes
overseas.

About an hour ago, I received some technical "help" from my ISP that
completely erased my Address Book, and ALL my saved mail (which was
QUITE extensive-- hundreds of letters and pictures!).

I'm pretty devastated.

Please send me all of your addresses, do that I can begin to regroup?

Thanks!

I have been listening to the theme from Search for the last 15
minutes that I d/l from Soundamerica.com. It really brings back some
memories. If anyone is interested there is a way to transfer video
tape to CD using the latest codec from RealVideo. I bought a group of
episodes (24 30min) shows on 1 CD. It transfered really well and it
might be an option if anyone is interested. Its alot easier to
transfer a couple CD's via mail then 2-3 tapes plus no wear!

Hi Don,

Yes I can confirm that most of the new VCR`s in the UK now play both
PAL and NTSC tapes as I found out when looking into a way of playing
or converting the Search tapes. I am not sure if these machines are
available in the US though, check with your local electrical stores.
I suppose it is because of consumer demand, I know people who buy
tapes when they are in the US or order via the internet simply
because they are cheaper than the UK (but then isn`t everything !, as
I understand it you pay about a $1 a gallon for fuel, our equivalent
is $9 a gallon !) it is the same with DVD players and discs, NTSC
versions are much cheaper than PAL but you need a multi-region player
or someone who knows how to de-code them.
