'SEEMED LIKE HOURS': Deer's victim covered with bruises, scratches
By SHELLEY LIVERNOIS
JOHNSON NEWSPAPERS
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2009
MOIRA - For a few terrifying minutes, a Moira man became prey for a disgruntled
buck.
An attack by a 10-point buck Friday sent Gerald A. Dabiew, 56, to the emergency
room, covered from head to toe with cuts and bruises. Mr. Dabiew - who doesn't
even hunt - was attacked for several minutes by the buck behind his house on
Best Road.
"It seemed like hours," Mr. Dabiew said.
He was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital, but still was
sore Monday, covered in bruises and scratches but with no broken bones.
His home is isolated and surrounded by woods, and Mr. Dabiew said he has seen
deer in the area, but none has come close to him. So on Friday, as he was
loading wood into a bucket behind his house, he didn't think twice as he spotted
the buck across the road, watching it as he finished his work.
"He stepped on the road, he looked at me, and the next thing I know, he was
coming right at me," he said. "He got me down on the ground, and it was then I
knew that he really wanted to kill me."
For several minutes, Mr. Dabiew fought the buck, which tried to flip him over
several times as he wrapped his legs around the animal's neck and held on to its
antlers.
The buck kept him pinned and pounded him into the ground, holding him there so
he couldn't move. When Mr. Dabiew tried to wrestle himself loose, the buck would
ram him again, he said.
"But I wasn't letting go of him," he said.
The buck injured Mr. Dabiew's hand and body with its antlers, although the
antlers didn't puncture his body, and kicked him on the jaw.
"I've got bruises from head to toe," he said. "He picked me up in the air and
pounded me into the ground."
During the ordeal, Mr. Dabiew, who was home alone, said he hollered for help
until his throat went dry as he continued to battle the animal. Without the
adrenaline pulsing through his veins, he said, he never would have lasted as
long as he did. Even then, by the end of the fight his arms had lost all their
strength.
The buck tried one last time to turn him over, but Mr. Dabiew, who describes
himself as "a good-sized guy," broke loose and managed eventually to kick the
animal, causing it to back off and run away.
"I don't know why he came around. All I was doing was throwing wood," he said.
"I'm not even a hunter."
Mr. Dabiew said the sound of the wood hitting his bucket could have sounded like
deer antlers being hit together, a strategy hunters often use to lure deer.
No matter what the cause, deer attacks are uncommon, but not unheard of.
"This is breeding season for whitetails, and they get pretty aggressive, usually
with other bucks," said wildlife biologist Ed Reed of the state Department of
Environmental Conservation Region 5 office. "They have been known to attack
people. If he sees something moving, he feels like it's somebody encroaching on
his territory."
In fact, people are more likely to be attacked by a deer than a bear, which more
people fear but which attack extremely rarely.
Mr. Reed said people should not be concerned for their safety in light of
Friday's attack against Mr. Dabiew. He said Mr. Dabiew's theory about why the
buck attacked could be correct, as the sound of wood hitting a bucket would have
simulated the "sound of bucks fighting."
Mr. Dabiew said he certainly didn't consider deer to be dangerous animals -
until Friday.
"It changed my way of thinking," he said. "I took an awful pounding; I know
that."

Another interesting fact in the fight to prevent contracting swine flu.... after reading this I will be using paper towels from now on.
Everyone in the cleaning industry has always been told that hand dryers in restrooms are not sanitary, they spread germs and bacteria around. I always thought that this just came from the paper companies because they are losing sales to the hand dryers.
A couple of years ago, I was working with a rep, and I noticed that after he washed his hands and saw that there were no paper towels only a hand dryer, he left the restroom with wet hands. I asked him about it. He said that hand dryers blow a lot of germs and bacteria around. He also told me to take a look under the hand dryer next time I was in a restroom. There is a filter underneath the hand dryer that is supposed to be cleaned on a weekly basis. I looked at one and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years.
It had layers and layers of caked on gunk (disgusting) . Since then I will not use hand dryers in restrooms. Now this is where the story gets really interesting. The schools and universities that have had the H1N1 (swine flue) outbreak this year are being told by the health department that they have to take out all of their hand dryers and replace them with towel dispensers because the hand dryers are spreading disease. Please pass this along so everyone knows not to use hand dryers.
Everyone do all you can to stay well, I knew I had a good reason to carry extra tissues with me Blessing Cyn Ann

Hi Rebecca,
I'm delighted you like my poem. It's from a long one I wrote a couple years ago. I use it as a sig line in remembrance of a few loved ones lost the last few years that left a huge hole in my heart.
I pray daily for the Brecks. He is one of the gentest, truest gentleman I've ever met. I pray they have peace.
aj
How long will I remember you?
till sunrise runs out of paint, day forgets to end,
dark's only for sweet reflection, till forever begins,
even after.
Deep in the deepest
part of my soul, deeper still than all flesh and bone.
Deep as light in space
the ray hardest to find, there, my love, there, I am.
I'm like one tiny insignificant star, where your wonder shines on.

Pickling salt is the best for this salinesolution for nostrils. You can mix the salt with warm water and place in a small spray bottle and spray it into the nostrils. Just be sure you do this over the sink as it is very messy. A recipe I have calls for one tablespoon of non-iodized salt for two cups of warm water and half a tablespoon of olive oil. This is actually a good rinse of you are prone to winter sinus trouble and dry nose sores. The salineis good to clear sinuses and the oil help keep mucus membranes in the nose moist. This was given to me by an ears, eyes and throat specialist a few years ago and I've used ever since.

Good advise!
PREVENTATIVES FOR H1N1 Flu ~The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions.
~Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
~While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
~1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications) .
~2. "Hands-off-the- face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
~ 3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal
cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
~ 4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
~5. *Boost your
natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
~6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

I have been reading more online about this and I agree with your assessment here Carrie. Dinentia is different from Alzheimers in a lot of ways. Peter can still read and he knows people. He has not lost memories from decades ago but just his short term memory like maybe what he had for breakfast that morning. i am continuing to pray for Peter and Diane. Anita

So sorry for your loss. Yes there is a difference. In my opinion....alzh. makes a person go off in space. Where as dementia..they seem almost normal but get "klutsy...short term memory loss....maybe inner ear- like disterbances where they will fall etc.... then it progresses to losing thoughts and things. And sometimes emotional outbursts etc.
I'll send more info in a bit. But yes...people want to label you as an Alzheimers victim just because of memory loss.....not so.

Tell me Carrie, my oldest sister insist our mom had Alzheimer, when I say no she says "It's all the same thing." But I asked moms doctor at least three times and she said it was a form of Dementia I also talked to other people in the medical field and they also said it was a form of Dememtia.... I think some people just want to group it in one name instead of thinking it could be diffeant forms. Like everyone gets Cancer, use to be a time no one mentioned what kind of Cancer you just got Cancer.
It's not easy to talk about, but maybe if more did some people would not be sooo *Don't mention it* like if you don't talk about it it dose not exsit...it becomes the elephant in the cornor..I don't mean to take over Peters site for it, but talkto family, friends whoever esp those who when they find out someone has it (in any form) comes out with *I can't think of them being that way* when I got this from people I looked them in the eye and said "You think I want to, I'm her caregiver." This is something that is not going a way so the more we as a people know about it the better it should be...it will not be the Elephant, but something better understood.
As some of you know I lost mom in Jan....After 5 yrs of caregiving , I'm trying to get back into some kind of life again.
This is just my 2 cents....

Thanks. This is a crazy disease..if you will. Some people confuse it with alzhiemers. Soooo the good news is....they don't usually forget peoples faces etc. I think it is more frustrating for them. Being in the medical field for the past 13 years before the film and entertainment industry, I think there are "some" medications available to help aleviate some symptoms. Lets hope that Peter is doing better than most.
Once again..my prayers..and thanks Anita

To the Peter Breck Fan Club
Hello to all of you. I am afraid that I have some sad news to share with you. My husband is suffering from frontal dementia and it has become quite severe. I have kept it quiet for a long time now because I felt that is what he would want. However I feel the time has come when I have to let it be known and quite honestly, he will not know. It actually started quite a few years ago but it was just little things and it has grown gradually worse over the years. The past 3 years is when it has really started to affect him and this year has been the worst.
He is at home and I plan on keeping him here as long as possible. Amazingly he still looks darned good. He is happy because he does not know that anything is wrong. There is no pain. It is sad to me to have to watch that very sharp mind disintegrate.
I know that he would want me to thank all of you for your wonderful caring support of him during his
career. You simply cannot imagine how much it has meant to him. I am also very grateful to all of you. I will be staying in touch with Linda and she will share any news with you.
Do any of you watch a western or war show and when the winner of the fight moves
on,ever wonder *Do they take the extra weapons with them*
The other night I was watching a fight between the posse and some outlaws when
so many were killed the outlaws decided it was time to hightail it for higher
ground... One of the posse said they were running low on ammo, but they didn't
take the dead outlaws guns or ammo....How come??? IS there some unwritten code
that says you can't use the other sides ammo?
I don't think it has to do with only having just so much to win,not when there
have been times I have heard/seen a six gun being fired more then six times.
Just wondering
Blessing
Cyn Ann
