Since I have changed jobs twice and moving day 3 times in the
last couple weeks, as you may guess things have been hectic. Andrew is
back from his vacation so maybe we could arrange something for the first
Thursday in September which is next week, or otherwise the second? How
is everyone for time then? I still offer my place and will clean things
up a bit this weekend (at least the living room and bathroom -- no
promises about the rest of the place as I'm in the midst of packing...
:) and Andrew was kind enough to offer loanership of his (larger)
television set for the occasion (I will be getting a larger set when I
move in November [date STILL tentative]).
BTW, one of these days, probably in the next year -- biggest obstacle
being the repair of my Betamax recorder -- I will be taking all of MY
Doctor Who collection and encoding them on VCDs, 2 episodes per CD (Not
sure how I can encode "The Five Doctors", since a VCD stores only 74
[or at most 80] minutes). That will be a might bit nicer (apart from the
hourly CD changes -- 5 for 'The War Games'; 7! for tToaTL) on my 21"
monitor with Bose speakers, as well as being a much more reliable media
than Video Tape -- if I can just convince the Finacee of the merits of
this exercise... :)
You should see what I've been doing to my CD collection. :)

	 Okay, so I propose 2 September 1999, at 7 p.m. at Jeffrey's Place.
Jeffrey's place (Yes, that's me!) is easy to get to from major roads:

	 From the Beltway (I495):

	 1. Take exit 9A or 9C in Virginia, I66 West.
	 2. At exit 52 (US 29), take a Left onto Route 29 North.
[Exit 52 is rather close to 53, so be careful --
		  it is after the bridge]
	 3. On 29, move under the over pass and make your way as quick as can
	  be to the far right lane;
	 4. At the first light, turn Right onto Machen Rd.
	 5. Drive past the Library, pass the shopping centre, until just before
	  the multiplex parking lot.
[If you pass the Multiplex parking lot or Route 28,
		  you've gone too far]
	 6. The first light you see on Machen is Centrewood Dr., turn right
	  here.
	 7. You are now passing my Apartment Complex. To enter, take the
first entrance on Centrewood Dr. It is your first right. Look
for the Silo with the big "Lakeside Apartments" sign. This is
	  Summer Tree Rd.
	 8. Go straight through the stop sign [ Stopping First! :) ]. My
building is the first on the right, #14300, across from the pool.
	 9. Park. :)
	 10. Up the stairs to floor 3, I'm in Apartment N, the first on your
right at the top of the stairs.

	 From I66:

	 1. Follow steps 2 - 10 above.

From The Dulles Toll Road and other points North:

	 1. Take the toll road to Route 28 South (not sure the exit number).
	 2. Drive about 5 miles south until you reach the intersection of
Route 28 and US 29 [This is past the on-ramp to I66].
	 3. Take a right onto US 29. This is the first light after the
	  intersection of I66.
	 4. From US 29, take a left at the first light. This is our old
	  friend, Centrewood Dr. again.
	 5. Follow Centrewood Dr. through 2 stop lights. The second light
	  is Machen Rd. from above.
	 6. Follow steps 7 - 10 above.

Anyway, Amy, Brad, Neil and Andrew, please send me a note
regarding your availability for 2 September as well as 9 September. I
will not make the day official until I hear from all of you, positive or
negative, so please respond hastily if at all possible. Take care and
see you all soon! I'll post the new date on the web page when firm.

		 Be Seeing You,

		 Jeffrey.

I've already send an article to this effect, but it hasn't shown up yet so
here's the short form:

I'm proposing that our first meeting of the Northern Virginia Doctor Who
Viewing Society be next Thursday, 2 September, at 7p. As previously agreed,
we will be showing "Seeds of Doom", the Tom Baker story, and I am asking Brad
to be Tape-Provider for this one. If for any reason the 2nd is not accetable,
I am proposing the following Thursday, 9 September, as our backup. All dates
are tentitive until I hear back from the four of you (Andrew, Neil, Brad and
Amy). At that point we can fix the date; I will post it on our E-Groups
NoVaDWVS Calendar page as well as the NoVaDWVA home
(http://starship.python.net/crew/timehorse/NoVaDWVS/). RSVP ASAP, and don't
sweat the pressure, as I only want to finalize with a few days notice, but
even if we have to postpone until 16 September due to lack of response, I'm
okay with that -- though Brad is getting itchy (He'll be out of Tom Baker
video tapes by then)! :)

That's all for now. My home directions are in the other e-mail so I won't
repeat them. Take care all and I hope to hear from you soon!

BTW, my home phone is (703) 631-1341 if you need to contact me for anything.
Honestly I don't use that archaic device that much, but if you must... :)

		 Be Seeing You,

		 Jeffrey.

Hi all,

Just wondering if we are still working towards a first meeting date?

My wife is a teacher, and she's started school again, so that means I have a
little time to myself in the mornings to watch Doctor Who again! It feels
great! This week, I've watched "The Masque of Mandragora", which was good,
but the ending made no sense to me. Now I'm watching "The Hand of Fear",
which is terrific one episode into it. I'm wondering if I should go back and
pick up "The Seeds of Doom" or should I hold out until we get the club
together?

Hey All!

I was looking around on the Internet for the Peter Davison theme (My
favourite) and found these two files but alas I remember not where so I
can not give credit where credit is due. :( However, I did upload the
two MP3s to the vault at e-groups (just go to the e-groups link at the
end of this e-mail and click on the vault menu. They're in the
directory "Neat Music"). I would have put them on our main web site
but this was quicker so it's just as well. Anyway, I'll keep them up
for a few days if any of them want to have a listen.

BTW, if you don't know how to play MP3 files, for Windows 9x & NT, I
strongly recommend Winamp (www.winamp.com), and Andrew can probably
give you Unix advice. Also, the Windows Media Player 6.1 supports MP3
as well as the latest version of the Real Audio player.

Also, if y'all need a translation of Dr. Qui, Andrew and I can both
help you out with the French.

Take care all!

Be Seeing You,

Jeffrey.

I don't have any days that are bad (although Tuesdays seem to be pretty
busy), but I do have some specific dates. 8/9, 8/13-8/15, and 8/17 are all
taken. Otherwise, I'm open. :)

I'm glad you understood my question. Now that I read it again, I realize that
I goofed! I meant to ask if it means early Sunday morning/late Saturday night
or late Sunday night/early Monday morning. :} I think you are right though.

As for MPT, I guess I was thinking less about real ratings than I was about
how many people continue to watch it and thus support it. Let's hope people
continue to be dedicated even at those late hours! :)

I'm pretty sure they mean late Saturday since the day of
Sunday is strictly correct for such a time slot. However we shall see.

Well, technically they don't really care that much about
ratings, since the majority of Station funding through viewers like us
(OTOH, if they start generating most of their revenue from Corporate
Under-writing, then we're in trouble!!), what I'd assume influences them
most is not what the Neilsons are saying (who's reading the Neilson's now a
days anyway?), but how much revenue they can generate during those
pledge-a-thons of theirs. After all, they returned to Movie format and
added the Friday Night (Saturday Morning) broadcast due solely to massive
complaints from the viewership, despite the desires of "New Management" to
kill the program all together. Thus, MPT support for Doctor Who has been
consistently good. We are one of the best contributing regions of the
country for the show, and even if we don't attract new viewers, as longs as
the one's like us continue to contribute, Doctor Who's future is assured.
Of course, if the dedicated fans stop contributing, well, lets' just say
it's good at least Northern Virginia has this Viewing Society now, isn't it.

Do they mean 12:30 am as in early Sunday morning or late Saturday night, I
wonder?

And why do they keep putting it on later and later at night? When they do
that, I always get worried that the ratings will fall so low that they won't
keep it on the air. It certainly isn't attracting new viewers on that
schedule.

Also, I'm wondering if they will still be showing episodes twice (Friday and
Saturday) in the future?

Thanks for the update, Neil!

I remember CPT (Connecticut Public Television) used to run
Blakes 7, though I never got into it. I'd rather be watching the original
'Tomorrow People', but that's another story completely. :) It's okay as a
series though and MPT has been running it for about a month or so, thus my
conclusion on re-evaluation. It runs just before Doctor Who on Saturdays,
as I remember, but I'll have to check my guide when I get home.

Thanks Brad! As it is, I tend to agree about the more planning
issue. Let's just wait and I should be able to hold it at my place in a few
weeks as I suggested. Does anyone have any problems getting to Centreville?
As mentioned, my place should accommodate 5 people no problem, though we'll
have to put up with a 12" screen -- though anyone who has seen my screen
swears it's the cleanest picture they've ever seen on a television (probably
because it's not actually a television, but a Commodore 64 Computer monitor
:) Does anyone have days they know they *can't* attend? Again, to remind
everyone (and to inform Neil), we have currently scheduled 'Seeds of Doom',
the Baker story involving the 'Killer Plants' :) as out pilot story, so to
speak.

Anyway, I'd best be going, so y'all take care now and I hope to hear
from y'all soon!

Hey Gang,

I would also like some clarification from MPT. I'm a member too, and the web
site schedule and the printed schedule don't match up. It also sounds like
they might be showing some Blakes 7 episodes soon. Anybody watch that? I've
never seen it, but I've always heard that it's popular among DW fans.

As for planning a meeting, I'm ok with either waiting a couple of more weeks
or having it out at my place. Whatever you all are up to. It might be just
as well if we plan it a bit in advance so we can make sure everyone can make
it to the first meeting. Then we'll have a better idea what to expect and we
can plan later meetings a little easier.

Thanks, it does appear now that I overreacted. It wasnt due so much to the

Saturday schedule as to the Friday schedule online, which didnt show
Doctor
Who listed (Newsnight for two hours instead). I was just having flashbacks
of
last year, when I was so happy to discover Doctor Who on MPT after moving
here from South Carolina, looking forward to Baker after not having seen
it many
years, and then they started over with episode 1! Eventually I came to
appreciate
it anyway though and like some of the original Doctors, especially
Hartnell, and
now I have the first 10 (surviving) seasons.

BTW, here's what MPT said in reply:

"Thank you for your email. The Tom Baker episodes of "Doctor Who" will
start
to air on Friday August 27th at midnight. The rest of the series will
air starting
the following Sunday September 5th at 12:30 am and continue on that day
and
time. Thank you for being a viewer of MPT."

Thanks again, sorry about the false alarm,

Hi Neil and welcome to our little but slowly growing club! Wow,
you sweep in on the heals of worry but calm be we for I believe I can
clarify. Andrew and I at least are members of MPT (we expect to hear
from the DNC any day now...) and I checked the guide a few days ago but
forgot to mention it: On Saturday, 28 August, at Midnight (i.e. Late
Friday Night), MPT has listed: Dr. Who: T. Baker: Robot 87737 (In case
you need the VCR+ code). I believe the area of confusion actually stems
from the Saturday schedule, where Doctor Who is not scheduled. For
Saturday 28 Aug Evening / Sunday 29 Aug Morning, they have scheduled a
complete Mr. Bean marathon ("The Full Bean", followed by episodes 1 - 13),
starting at 11pm until they go off-air that morning. I'm not sure if
this means the Saturday broadcast is cancelled, but given the Mr. Bean
marathon, my guess would be the loss is only temporary. The good news
is, the T. Baker stories WILL be starting on MPT at the end of the
month. :)

Don't forget "Buffy", plus Joe Bob Briggs's "Monstervision", and
that's about it. (And why does an introduction for *me* contain a

Hmmm... I'm not sure I have a favorite, but if I did it would
probably be a Tom Baker story, perhaps from the Gothic phase
("Pyramids of Mars", "Talons of Weng-Chiang", etc. -- TB's first two
season), or maybe "Nightmares of Eden".

>Do you read DW novels? Occasionally, Missing Adventures only

Change that to "practically never". The NAs almost always fill me
with a desire to fling them across the room due to their sheer
badness; the MAs are sometimes decent, sometimes poor, but never
really great. There are too many good books by skilled
authors to make it worth bothering with pale derivatives. (For
example, I just read Ramsey Campbell's "Nazareth Hill"; low-key, calm,
and utterly terrifying...)

Well, maybe I overreacted. I checked back into it after MPT showed
Doctor Who again last night, which wasnt on the schedule. I realized
the schedule showed the 'Boatshow' for two hours, which I'm assuming is
unlikely. Similarly, the Friday 27th schedule shows 'Newsnight' for two
hours, also unlikely. I'd still like clarification, but it doesnt look
quite so bad anymore...

Hello all, good to hear of a club starting, but I just stumbled onto
some potentially very bad news. MPT updates its schedule a week or so
ahead of time, if you know where to go you can see it. At any rate,
they've got episodes straight up through Aug 20, with the last Pertwee
episode, Planet Of The Spiders. However they've got absolutely no
Doctor Who at all for the following weekend, when Baker should start. I
sure as heck hope they're not thinking of starting from the beginning
again, I've been waiting a whole year since they finished Pertwee and
went to Hartnell this time last year.

Here's the address for the August schedule: http://www.mpt.org/cgi-bin/
listings/month-August

I've already sent an e-mail to MPT about this. I hope it's just a
weekend off they're picking it back up in September.

Hi All!

Well, as you may have noticed, Andrew has not sent out his
introductions. This is not because he is shy, but simply because after
months and months of hard work, he is visiting home for the week in my
beloved Montréal (that is where I met Andrew at McGill University, BTW). I
was going to ask him to bring back some genuine authentic smoked meat, but
as he already did that for me last time, I didn't want to impose. Anyway,
since he did tell me he was planning to send out his intro before he left,
I'm sure he won't mind if I fill out his form a bit. Thinking about it, I
will add a few fields to mine as well which I just thought of.

Okay, so that takes care of the introductions! Now, how about planning our

Thus, if we want to get together sooner, I would suggest a volunteer.
Otherwise, hopefully in August I can have the place cleaned up and find the
time to get things in order. I sincerely apologize for this and am willing
to host the next 2 meetings if a volunteer comes forth. :)

BTW, as Brad suggested, it would be nice if we can all bring food to the
hosts house, so I should ask, do any of us have dietary restrictions. I am
allergic to citrus, though small quantities don't much affect me, and
otherwise I'm pretty much open-minded. Same with Andrew as long as it's
stacked with Black Olives :) [Andrew HATES Black Olives]. I also found that
Andrew does NOT like Sour Cream and Garlic potato crisps. Go figure. :)
Does everyone like Pizza, as that might be a good "snack" in case we don't
have a chance to eat before meetings. Again, what do y'all think? Anyway,
I'll stop talking now, I promise! :) Take care!

			 Be Seeing You,

			 Jeffrey.

Pets are ok by me! I should warn you all that I have a 100-lb weimaraner and
a cat, so if you don't like big dogs with loud barks (even very friendly
ones), perhaps my place wouldn't be a good one.

Couch space is not a big deal either -- give me some floor space, and I'll
bring some pillows to sit on.

The meeting length sounds good to me, but don't worry about me driving home
late. I can manage. If we want chips or popcorn or drinks or anything,
perhaps we should rely on the people who are NOT hosting at each meeting to
come up with that stuff. What do you think?

I prefer episodic format too, but since most of my copies are recorded off of
MPT or other places, then most of them end up being in movie format. I think
my Seeds of Doom copy is from the CBS/FOX release though, so it may be in
episodic.

Jeffrey, what kind of job are you shopping for? I'll keep my eyes open since
I'm kinda-sorta job shopping too.

Thanks Brad and DiStrelen for the offers of locals, and I think
what we'll do while we're still small is try to rotate between each of
our abodes until the size of our little group becomes too ungainly. Of
course Brad's place is a bit far for everyone else, so perhaps we'll only
rotate you in pretty rarely. :) Both Andrew and I are planning on
moving soon, so in the near future we may both have more hospitable
abodes too. I'm still willing to have the first meeting at my place,
though obviously the Television is small, as I mentioned. I also know
that Andrew doesn't have much couch space, but if he'll excuse me for
speaking for him, Andrew also has a very cute [ but evil ;) ] cat named
Duncan, so neither of us would be bothered by feline company. :) I
haven't any pets since my brother's Conure, Oscars, Costumuses, Mollies
and Skink moved away. :)
As for story, I okay with Seeds. It's been a while for me, but I
do so love Antarctica. :) T. Baker's not my favourite Doctor, but as
Brad mentioned, it's been a while since he's been on around here --
though I believe MPT will be starting with 'Robot' in a month. Anyway,
if Andrew's in accord with 'Seeds of Doom', then that shall be our
inaugural story! Excellent! :)
One suggestion: I think we should keep meetings not much longer
than 3 hours, as they will probably occur on weeknights (Thursdays?) and
certainly Brad has a long way to drive home too. At 6 parts, Seeds comes
in at about 2h15, leaving 45 minutes to discuss: more than enough. If we
ever schedule 'The War Games', it's probably best either split between 2
meetings or for a weekend marathon. As for the three Pertwee 7-Parters,
2h40 IS quite long, so we shall have to think about that -- issue for
future meetings. :)
BTW, unlike Andrew, I tend to prefer the original Episodic
format, though as my Betamax is still incapacitated, I'll watch whatever
format I can. :) Take care guys and I'll write more soon. [ In the
middle of Job-Shopping, so I tend to be very busy these days. ]

		 Be Seeing You,

		 Jeffrey.

Given that there are only 4 of us so far, my roommate seems to think that our
living room is big enough, if you don't mind cats. We're just off Rte. 7 and
Pimmit Drive, near Tysons Corner. Wherever we end up holding it, please
include detailed directions for the "navigationally impaired" :)
As for the "what," "Seeds of Doom" is one of my favorites too, and I have a
protape of it, if you want me to bring it.
I'm looking forward to it!

I also have (I think) all the pro-tapes of the stories, as well as "More than
30 Years in the TARDIS" and "The Tom Baker Years". I would be more than
willing to bring some of them along, if you're interested.

Yes, my offer is still good. I've got a copy of all the existing stories plus
many of the telesnap reconstructions, so our options are wide open. My copies
are of varying quality, but almost all of them are very watchable. Most are
in "movie" format like they show on MPT, so I hope that's ok.

Just so you know, many of my votes will be for Tom Baker episodes, not just
because he's my favorite, but also because I haven't seen all of his stories
yet! :} So let's see... How about "The Seeds of Doom"?

Jeffrey, Centreville sounds fine by me, but if the group ever wants to make a
special trip out to the country, my house in Haymarket is open. Perhaps we
could arrange for someone to bring a bigger tv to your place? If not, we'll
manage, but it might be something to consider.

I'm glad that this group is coming together! I think it will be fun even if
there are only four of us. We can always start small and once people hear
about how much fun we're having, we'll start to gather more people.

Welcome!

I've updated the charter to point back to this mailing list, if there is no
objection. Welcome y'all to the club! I have been busy I'm afraid so I've not
had time to think much about the venue issue, though the more I contemplate,
the better it seems to just hold it at my place the first time and move on from
there. Since there is only 4 of us, this should not be a problem (still
waiting for one more person to join though). Anyway, if I work on the venue,
what would y'all prefer our inaugural story to be? Most recent MPT is easiest,
but if your offer is still good Brad, then we should have the full gambit of
variety! [No suggesting "Power of the Daleks"! :) ] Take care y'all and hope
to hear from you soon!

         Be Seeing You,

         Jeffrey.
