Good one Olivia!

Yea, lets just send the questions to the list.
Should we send the answers too or would everyone prefer to send those to me
personal email so that we can all take the challenge???

I have a tough one. This is one I don't know. Who were the four actresses who
portrayed Brett and Ashton as they were growing up (two each, when they were
very young at the begining and when they aged a few years during the time Orry
returned from the Mexican war)? What became of them?

Hi All.

I have an idea for a group project I thought might be fun. Let me know what you
all think.
At my N&S site I have a "Challenge" (quiz). The other day someone asked if I
would do a challenge 2 because she enjoyed it so much. If you all are
interested, I would love your help. We could do one together as a group. We

What do you all think? Interested?

thanks for the advice kathy.......

i'm reading a historical fiction (as i mentioned, a good way to get me to
actually remember details) book called SHILOH by Shelbey Foote that
recounts the two days of battle from the perspectives of different
soldiers. so i actually recognize the places you listed!
<self-satisfied grin>

speaking of learning actual history from north and south, i've been
working on a timeline for books I and II that includes lots of links to
historical docs, etc. some people might find it of interest -- it's on
my website.

Olivia, my daughter, Yvette is 16.... a sophomore in high school and on their
Scholar's Bowl....one of those academic type teams where you have teams from
different schools competing against one another, with different categories of
questions.

Well, Yvette really helps her team on all the Civil War questions.
Invariably, she always buzzes in before anyone on either team... and her
answer is always right.
Her Scholars Bowl sponsor.... a high school teacher....told her how amazed she
is at her quick & correct responses, and she asked how'd she get to know so
much.
Yvette told her she'd watched N&S so many times. She has the set and has seen
no less than 20 times, I'd say. It's funny how all the little historical
facts stick with her.... really, I think, in addition to all the reading they
do, N&S should be part of the curriculum.

Hi:
I visited Shiloh NMP a few years ago and was quite impressed with the
fact that it has not been encroached by commercialism. I think you'll be
pleasantly surprised. I went in early December, which turned out to be an
almost fall day. I practically had the whole park to myself and was quite
moved by some of the monuments and the battle sites. Follow the park tour map
and you'll visit such places as Pittsburgh Landing, the Hornets' Nest,
Confederate Burial Trench, Shiloh Church, Johnston's Death site, Peach Orchard
and Bloody Pond. Enjoy your trip.

i'm so excited because my friends and i are taking a roadtrip to Tennessee

has anyone ever been or have any advice about what's worth seeing there?

i've actually sort of turned into a civil war, and other, history buff
*because* of books/movies like north and south. historical fiction has
always seemed to me a much more accessible way to learn about
history...........especially since i tended to rebel against anything
anyone would try to get me to like at school!

i end up piecing together this imaginary world (a romanticized one of
course!) involving all the characters i've ever read about. so, even if
i'm reading straight history, i'll always end up adding in fictional
characters and being like, "oh, yeah, 1856, charles main was in
texas at that time." it helps me keep track of events, when i have a
personal story to connect them to.

anyway, welcome to all the new people. this list is really growing!

Hi Everyone,

I just found this list and decided to sub. I'm more a fan of the
mini-series than the books, but I haven't read them all yet either (just
portions). Perhaps one of these days I'll get a chance to actually read
John Jakes' trilogy uninterrupted.

While I can't say I'm a Civil War buff, I have always been interested in
it, and how it affected American families (the brother against brother
angle, etc.). I've enjoyed several of the great films on the subject
from GWTW to Shenandoah to The Undefeated and more, as well as episodic
tv show stories on the subject (the old tv western Laramie did several
nice episodes dealing with the aftermath of the Civil War which I found
fascinating).

Anywho, I'm also a Patrick Swayze fan, but I loved N&S years before I
ever became a fan (can't say I followed Patrick until late 1993, in
fact). I do have a web page, and several pages on it are devoted to
Patrick and his wife Lisa, and one of those is a North and South page.
I'm working on a second page as well which will have more behind the
scenes or actual location pictures and similiar things, but I'm not sure
when that addition to the site will be ready.

I'm looking forward to being a part of the list!

Olivia and other North and South fans...

Hi... I am very happy to have found this group. I found it today as I was
looking
at the N&S Miniseries Archives Guestbook (the P. Baldwin site).

My name is Lyn, and I am from Kansas. I have a son who just turned 18 and a
daughter who just turned 16.

I first saw North and South when it aired in 1985... my son was just a little
boy,
of course, but he watched every night, eagerly anticipating each show. Each
day, he
would ask, "Is Mr. Main on tonight?" (That was what he called the show.)

My daughter, Yvette, and I have seen, on video, N&S a number of times. She
loves it
at least as much as I do. I bought Book I and Book II for her when she
finished
watching all 12 episodes that we had rented and wanted to start all over again.

It was quite a thrill to see today that John Jakes left a message at P.
Baldwin's
site! I now intend to go check out his website!

:-) Lyn

Hi:
I've been to Savannah a few times. It's quite a beautiful city,
especially in the spring. I was down there when they were filming the movie
"Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," and got to see Kevin Spacey, John
Cusack and Clint Eastwood from afar. It was quite a surprise to us. I had
heard that they were shooting there, but thought they would have been done by
the time we got there...that was in May of '97. The Mercer House where the
main character lived was also the house used in the movie "Glory."
Fort Jackson in Savannah was built around 1812 and named after Andrew
Jackson. I specifically wanted to visit it, because the regiment I have
researched for several years, the 55th Massachusetts, was stationed there for
one month in early 1865.
I can see that I'm going to enjoy this group. It's certainly nice to talk
to others who have the same interest.

OT: re savannah, have you seen the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good
and Evil? it's set in savannah......i've never been there myself, but the
character of the city seems to be meant as a sort of big element in the
film.

Hi:
I've been a Civil War buff for years and have traveled extensively to see
many of the battlefields. I read the books first and was enthralled with
them. When I heard that there would be a mini-series, of course I was
ecstatic. After they aired, I reread the series to see how different they
were.
I'm heading down to Charleston next week to visit friends. I'm retiring
there in about 5 years. I'm so glad to see a list devoted to one of my
favorite trilogies. Thanks for starting it!

Hi --

I just created this list -- literally *yesterday* -- and noticed that a
few people had subscribed already. :-D

so, i thought i'd introduce myself. I'm Olivia. i'm sort of a history
buff and got into north and south the first time i saw it -- when it aired
in 1985. i was only nine then, but my dad -- a big civil war freak --
encouraged me to read the john jakes books and other historical fiction.

i guess i was kind of a silly-looking 4th grader lugging around these big
hard cover novels......the librarians at my local public library even made
me get a note from my parents to check the books out because of all the
adult content.

well, that's me and how i came to love this series.

i would love to hear from others.....
