Hi Peter: Thanks for joining the list and for your first post.
Thanks also for the information on Leslie Stevens. I was wondering
if you had any similar information on Gene L. Coon, which seasons or
episodes did he produce?
Thanks also for your list of "wanted" episodes. Hopefully someone
will be able to help you find those. On the other hand, it sounds

Another source for TNOTG episodes is David Miller, who is located in Allen, Texas. At last check, he has these eps:
SHINE ON JESSE GIL (11-1-68, Franciosa & Darren McGavin)
THE ORDEAL (11-22-68, Robert Stack)
THE WHITE BIRCH (11-29-68, Barry & Boris Karloff)
I have ordered from David in the past and he is reliable. However, his tapes are generally from older syndicated showings of 16mm versions of shows. Also, he may have gotten more episodes since the last list I got from him.
Anyone interested in ordering from David Miller, contact me (dghprobe3@...) by private email and I will send you his contact info. Although you could probably put "David Miller" and "Allen, TX" in a google search engine and the info may turn up.
(NOTE: A couple of list members already have a dub of the following episode:
SHINE ON JESSE GIL (11-1-68, Franciosa & Darren McGavin)
One reliable source for "Name of the Game" episodes on VHS is Ray Elliott. He has the following:
FEAR IN HIGH PLACES
INCOMPARABLE CONNIE WALKER (Ivan Dixon)
LA 2017 (Spielberg directed)
GOODBYE HARRY
THE GARDEN
THE WHITE BIRCH (Boris Karloff)
TAROT (William Shatner)
LAURIE MARIE
THE TRADITION
ALL THE OLD FAMILIAR FACES
THE SHOWDOWN
ISLAND OF GOLD & PRECIOUS STONES
At last check, Ray charged for regular VHS: $15 for 1 hour/ $20 for 2 hours.
Priority shipping costs: $3.20 per tape + $1 each add'l tape.
Foreign orders, please contact.
Since TNOTG was a 90 minute show, it would be economical to get his list either by mail or online and pick some 30 minute show to put at the end, since the cost will end up being the same. I recommend contacting him anyway because prices and shipping rates may have gone up since I last ordered from him. He is reliable and the quality is comparatively good. I ordered LA 2017 from him over a year ago and it was a good quality Mystery Channel dub.)

Greetings all, once again I am amazed at the resources
available on the internet. I remember watching both NOTG
and Search, and as a kid was fascinated by both. It has
been many, many years since I've seen either (though I
have the wav files of the themes).
It's too bad with 300+ channels on Comcast broadband that
I can watch the news from Japan, a show on squirrels, and
endless repeats of other crap but no repeats of the above
shows!
My inquiry: there were several mentions in the prior
message threads about episode tapes. What advice would
y'all have for getting one? I've searched ebay, but this
seems to be a dicey area, so any advice would be great.
Best always,
Michael
Hello people!!
Does anyone out there know where I can find the several dozen NOTG
episodes which no video collector seems to have? I have a collection
to complete!!!
Witness, Lola In Lipstick, The Revolutionary, The Suntan Mob, Lady
On The Rocks, The Emissary, The Prisoner Within, The Civilized Men,
High Card, The Sking Game, Echo Of A Nightmare, One Of The Girls In
Research, Battle At Gannon's Bridge, The Enemy Before Us, I Love You
Billy Baker- parts 1 & 2, Aquarius Descending, A Sister From Napoli,
The Man Who Killed A Ghost, Seek And Destroy, The Savage Eye, The
Broken Puzzle.
I have been enjoying NOTG episodes (54 in all, 22 to go)immensly
since (re?) discovering it about five years ago thru the tape
collector market. I used to watch it late nights in the mid to late
70's when I was preteen lad who wasn't supposed to stay up late.
There are many NOTG episodes archived at the Library of Congress'
Motion Picture and Television Reading Room. Good luck, though, on
trying to get an appointment to view any of them. I tried and was
told "you must be an archivist of this sort of material to qualify
for an appointment".
To answer the Leslie Stevens/Tony Franciosa inquiries, I think there
were seven episodes in the series (all in season one- 1968-69)
produced by Stevens, six of them featured Tony Franciosa:
Fear Of High Places
Collectors' Edition
Shine On Shine On Jesse Gil
The Black Answer (produced, written AND directed by Leslie Stevens)
The Incomparable Connie Walker (written & produced by Leslie Stevens)
Keep The Doctor Away
Pineapple Rose (season one) was a Gene Barry episode
Not having seen all the season one episodes, however, the above list
may NOT be complete..... Leslie Stevens (according to a TV Guide
article in '69) left the show after the first season. Hope this
clears up some questions people had.

Robert Stack dies at age 84
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
He seemed untouchable.
Robert Stack, one of Hollywood's original straight-shooting tough-guy
characters, was found by wife Rosemarie slumped over Wednesday in his Los
Angeles home, dead of heart failure. He was 84.
Stack's role in the TV crime series The Untouchables made him famous.
Although the actor had had radiation treatment for
prostate cancer last October, his wife told the Associated Press on Thursday,
"He was feeling so good." She added that it wasn't the tumor that had been
troubling him, "it was his heart."
And it was his portrayal of almost heartlessly stern characters through his
career that made him a hero to millions of fans, particularly with his
Emmy-winning portrayal as federal agent Eliot Ness in the influential
1959-1963 TV crime series The Untouchables.
Gritty and gutsy, it was one of the first realistic TV
shows, in which guns fired, blood flowed, women had loose morals in
speak-easies and characters were ethnic. TV Guide articles asked "Is The
Untouchables too violent?"; there was a wave of now common but then
unheard-of Sopranos and Godfather-type backlash, complaining that the
villains were Italian Mafiosos. Ness and his gang went after some of the
worst people in organized crime and paved the way for cop shows to come.
"Bob inhabited that role. It was flawless. He was
Eliot Ness, and we just followed his lead," says actor Paul Picerni, who
portrayed federal agent Lee Hobson on the show. "The violence was quite
controversial at the time. But at the height of that, I remember a priest
said to me that The Untouchables is like a passion play. The bad guys are
very bad, and the good guys are very good. It's a real lesson in life, unlike
today where the bad guys often win."
Good-guy Stack was born into a performing arts family in Los Angeles. His
great-great-grandfather opened one of the city's first theaters, and his
grandparents, uncle and mother were opera singers. But he didn't sing. For
him, it was the actor's life.
He made more than 40 movies, starting with 1939's First Love and including
1956's Written on the Wind, which earned him an Oscar nomination. Later, he
moved into comedy, finding a new audience with 1980s films Airplane! and
Caddyshack II. Renewing his TV popularity was his job hosting Unsolved
Mysteries.
When asked in a Los Angeles Times interview in 1996 about being in show
business, Stack replied, "It'stough. It's like being a member of a club, this
profession. And you're kind of invited in and you hope that yourinvitation
holds out for good."
Stack and his wife wed in 1956 and have two children, Elizabeth and Charles,
both of Los Angeles.

(Kathie Browne appeared with her husband Darren McGavin in "The Name of the Game" episode "Shine On, Shine On, Jesse Gil.")
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Kathie Browne McGavin (wife of Darren McGavin). Kathie died of natural causes in Los Angeles, California, April 8, 2003, after a very brief illness.
Memorial Service: The memorial service and funeral will be held Saturday, April 19, 2003 at 12:30 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, located at 6300 Forest Park Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068, in the Old North Church. For directions please call (800) 204-3131. The public is invited to pay their last respects to Kathie, provided that the McGavin family and close friends are allowed to mourn Kathie's passing in private.
A woman of extraordinary talent, Kathie's quiet beauty, professional dignity and vivaciousness for life earned her an impressive career in films and television in the 1960's. We think Kathie would like it said, however, that her greatest achievements and certainly her most profound happiness came as Mrs. Darren McGavin. After marrying Darren in 1969, Kathie slowly abandoned her own career, devoting her time to promoting Darren's. She was responsible for a great deal of behind-the-scenes work on KOLCHAK, THE NIGHT STALKER, and produced "Zero to Sixty," a film written by and starring Darren McGavin. (She appeared in the KOLCHAK episode "The Sentry" as Lt. Irene Lamont.)
In later years, in company with their cat Peaches (who adopted the McGavin's while they were on location in Georgia, where Darren was filming a Disney movie), they traveled extensively, spending many happy months at a time on their riverboat in France.
Kathie's last filmed appearance was as a guest, speaking about her experiences (portraying Deela) on the STAR TREK episode, "Wink of an Eye," for the upcoming release of "Deep Space 9" on DVD.
As you read this, please join us for a moment of silence to Kathie's memory. She was a brave, loving woman who shall be greatly missed.
(Anthony Caruso guest starred in "The Name of the Game" episode "An Agent for the Plaintiff" (# 1.26), aired 21 March 1969.)
Ventura County Star, CA - BRENTWOOD Actor Anthony Caruso dies at 86 from illness
Anthony Caruso, a versatile stage and screen actor who had a knack for playing gangsters and Western desperados with flair and grit, died Friday in his Los Angeles County home after a long illness.
Caruso, 86, of Brentwood, portrayed bad guys in movies, on stage and on television in a career that spanned five decades. Caruso, a daunting presence in the saddle, was a regular on TV Westerns of the 1960s, supplying the villainy in such mainstays as "Gunsmoke," "Bonanza," "Wild Wild West," and "Have Gun Will Travel." He also appeared in episodes of "Get Smart" and "Star Trek" (in the episode "A Piece of the Action" as Bela Oxmyx). He also appeared in episodes of "The Virginian" and "It Takes a Thief."
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former actress Tonia Valente. He is also survived by his son, Tonio Caruso of Brentwood.

Hi Marta: It can be somewhat time consuming--and there is no hurry--
but if you have a video capture card, that would make things easier.
Since I only have about 8 or 10 episodes on tape, we could split up
and each do half. Let me know which episodes you copy the credits
off of, and I'll do the rest of them. We could forward our info to
Des Martin so he could update his list (he already has credits for
the "Fame is..." pilot movie) and maybe he could provide a link to
this mailing list in thanks.

Hi Marta: I've tried doing searches for TNOTG credits as well, and
can only find the sketchiest of details.
Des Martin has an episode guide for TNOTG at:

His listing is sketchy as well, but he does mention Gene L. Coon as
one of the producers of the Tony Franciosa episodes, apparently for
the first season. As we know, Leslie Stevens produced-wrote-directed
Franciosa episodes as well. Looking closer at Des Martin's listing,
certain episodes get a full treatment as if someone copied down the
credits info from a tape dub, such as this example:

Above links to a 1990 post from the comp.dcom.telecom newsgroup, and I reprint the post below. Apparently Tony Franciosa did one of those 900 number info-mercials on hair thinning prevention. I don't remember seeing this or hearing about it. Evidently it was run late at night, as do current info-mercials. Has anyone out there run across a tape of this?
For some weeks now, there has been a spot on late night TV that features Tony Franciosa hawking a "free" booklet on non-surgical thinning hair prevention methods. He says, "the booklet is free, and the phone call is free", and an 800 number is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
A number of us have been speculating concerning the purpose of the pitch. We figured that the booklet was an advertisement for some fly-by-night hair scam. Tonight we got the answer. The spot has been changed slightly. The pitch for the booklet is the same minus any mention of "free". And then a (you guessed it) 900 number shows up. Tony says that you can now solve your hair loss problems with a phone call. And that call now costs you $3.00.

Someone on eBay is selling a color photo of Tony Franciosa from "Name of the Game." The pic is only 7" x 9", a little smaller than the 8 x 10s that are out there. They include a small scan of it, which I swiped and posted to our Photos section for historical purposes.
To avoid a bidding war among list members, maybe a deal can be worked out where someone else can take a shot at the next photo that comes up, etc. It will mean less money for the sellers, but what the hey? :-)
Hi: Wow, you've covered a lot of territory in your post. I only have a few episodes on video from different sources, so I can't really speak to all of your points.
Yes, I've noticed the crossovers in some episodes I have. "Fear of High Places" is a Franciosa episode, but Barry appears here and there throughout, as he is in "The Incomparable Connie Walker."
The only Stack episode I have is "The Glory Shouter," one of the later episodes and I don't recall Barry being in that one, although he could have. I'd have to recheck the tape. And I think there were episodes where Barry did not appear, but his Glenn Howard character was referred to by name.
Enjoyed reading your comments about TNOTG's opening credits. If the purpose was to catch people's attention, they succeeded! In one Franciosa interview, he gave high praise for Dave Grusin's music theme and pointed out how other shows of the time tried to copy it.
I've noticed that Dominic Frontiere did some background music in certain TNOTG episodes, and that Frontiere also did the theme and background music for the subsequent SEARCH series. Leslie Stevens was also a producer and writer for both TNOTG and SEARCH.
However, I don't know who was responsible for the artwork and how it was edited together. And I've noticed the similarities of the artwork to other Universal shows. The Act One titles and credits were generally Universal standard, very much like "Columbo," "McCloud" and others.
If anyone has the answer to your other questions, I hope they will post something. Thanks.

Greetings once again!
I agree with your reply on the TF situation during season three...
more info would be helpful......onward to the present subjects....
during the first group of episodes from season one,the plan was to
have the three stars crossover into each others episodes to provide
continuity....gene barry did the most, appearing in half of the tony
franciosa episodes and some of the robert stack episodes.....I only
know of one franciosa crossover....and that was the first barry lead
episode,'the taker'...did robert stack do any? why did the crossover
plan end?
as for star billing and title graphics.....that's what got me to try
the show!!SEARCH took a more basic approach, but it was creative.....
but NOTG was planned to be big!! the creative team behind this did a
very innovative job in what I thought was one of the more shorter op-
enings for a series....40 seconds or less, I think....questions.....
do you know the artist responsible for the images used here?? the same
style seems evident in the title graphics for IRONSIDE as well as the
first 17 episodes of IT TAKES A THIEF.......
was any thought given to overall look of the titles? I remember seeing
the robert stack opening first, and upon seeing the tony franciosa im-
age at the third position the impression I get is'this guy is the cool
one'!!
the jazzy, pulsating first season dave grusin theme.....was there a
method to the tricks that seemed to occur during the merging of star
name into image, like using keyboard notes at the exact moment the TF
image would move to the screen and separate??
the billing did rotate to match the lead of the week, but I did take
note of NOTG main title having the same color as the background for
the gene barry image....it's movement and separation was the same as
tony franciosa's name....the letter style seemed to be too...was this
done to acknowlege barry being head of publishing empire and to indi-
cate that franciosa was the pilot star/lead investigative reporter??
I also noticed that his image separates in multiple directions like
the NOTG main title....it only merges for a second or so...the robert
stack graphic moved fast enough....do you know why that technique was
used making his name and image more of a merger??
was the NOTG first season theme ever released in any format as part of
any musical collection by dave grusin??
what made this theme one of if not the most original of all series???
(if you don't know,I'll tell you in another post.............)
thanks for listening!!
Hi and welcome to the group: Thanks for your question as to why Tony Franciosa left or was fired from The Name of the Game. The answer depends on which article or interview you read.
The PEOPLE magazine interview of Franciosa of March 18, 1996 says in part:
"...in 1970, at the peak of his TV fame, NBC executives complained he had been causing 'wear and tear' on the set and fired him from Name of the Game."
An August 9, 1975 Atlanta Journal interview quotes Franciosa on Name of the Game:
"After that series ended there were long periods of time during which I could not get much work. And I suppose it was because of the 'bad guy' reputation I got at Universal. I was hurt by the treatment I received there. The main problem I faced was that at Universal you didn't know who to talk to about your troubles. Universal is like a giant factory -- it's the richest studio in town and has enormous power. We had our disagreements though."
So it depends on which article you read. And it would help if we could find more articles about Franciosa on why he left the series. If anyone on the list has articles about "The Name of the Game" or any of the cast or crew, please post them to the list or add them to our Files section. Thanks.
(If the article links above don't work, just go to the "nameofthegame" home page, click on the "Files" section link, then open the "franciosa" folder and the articles will be there.)
greetings!
was he fired during season three or did he just leave because
he was too much of a perfectionist? I read an article in US
magazine that he left his role of jeff dillon.....of course
this was about 20 years ago.... thanks for listening.
The Mystery Channel maintains a "Name of the Game" page, however currently "no airdates scheduled." They also maintain a page for the pilot movie, "Fame is the Name of the Game," again "no airdates scheduled."
Sounds like they still have access to the pilot and episodes, but are not showing them now for whatever reason.
Their Anthony Franciosa index (they also have a "Search" page):

Hi: Thanks for those questions and welcome to the group. Yes, TNOTG
was a weekly series with rotating stars. Whereas the NBC Mystery
Movies had rotating series with different characters and different
formats, all "Game" episodes had a similar format, along with similar
background characters (such as Peggy Maxwell, played by Susan St.
James).
On your second question, the article/synopsis of LA 2017 from the
Spielberg site is very condensed and somewhat irreverent, but it is
basically correct as far as the aired episode goes.
What is missing are a few key details. I watched the opening few
minutes of the episode again and took notes:
When we first see Glen Howard's large 1970's model car, they dubbed
in sounds, as though the car was in need of a tune up. The sound
faded and the car sounded more normal afterward.
As the car first approaches us, we hear a radio news report about an
oil channel leak, then there is a report of a third straight smog
alert for L.A., with air pollution levels reaching a new record.
They add that the temperature will reach 70 degrees this day.
Howard then turns off the radio, and opens an air vent--or it is the
a/c? They don't make this point clear. The car's windows are closed.
Then Howard begins narrating into a tape recorder, a message for the
President about the coming ecological challenge. As he speaks, he
becomes progressively more sleepy. Within a minute or so, he passes
out and the car runs off the road. Lucky for Howard that the car ran
into a ditch. Then we see a close up of fumes coming from the car's
exhaust pipe.
Going by what was presented, we can't really be sure whether Howard
was also sleepy on top of the smog alerts and everything else.
Anyway, this is the setup, sketchy as it is, which gets Howard asleep
so that the rest of the episode is a sci-fi dream of possible future
ecological catastrophe.
Some parts of the episode work better than others. Filmed as it was
during 1971, the overall look of the episode is dated, even though
the setting is the future. The eerie nature of the storyline still
comes through and the irony is that this could still be our future if
we mess up badly or have an American Chernobyl, etc.
Myself, I find it strange that Spielberg, of all people, would
present a story in which the USA has been transformed into virtually
a fascist-like state, run by giant corporations. He's done a similar
thing with "Minority Report." Then again, maybe he is warning
against it by presenting some of the dangers.
At any rate, "LA 2017" is probably the strangest and most interesting
and atypical episode of "The Name of the Game."
Two questions about the below posting:
1)Wasn't Name of the Game a weekly show? Rather then being a
rotating series, as was Colombo, McMillian & Wife and McCloud were,
wasn't Game a weekly show that had rotating stars?
2)The way they worded "Howard opens the air vent to his automobile,
letting a healthy dose of L.A. smog and auto exhaust into his car ..."
just sounds wrong. My first reaction to that sentence was that they
were saying that the air in general was so bad that it made Howard
pass out. Wasn't it in fact the case that he was driving with the
windows closed (probably with the A/C on) and the exaust system
developed a fault and started pumping carbon monoxide exaust into the
passenger compartment...making him pass out?

(Below is from the Spielberg site on "LA 2017," an episode of "Name of the Game" featuring Gene Barry which has a sci-fi twist.)
Many cite CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND as Steven Spielberg's first foray into creating science-fiction as a professional filmmaker, however L.A. 2017, a feature-length television episode from the series THE NAME OF THE GAME predates CLOSE ENCOUNTERS by a good six years.
THE NAME OF THE GAME was one of Universal Studios early 1970's stable shows that aired in what was known as a "four-in-one" cycle--where it would rotate with other shows on a monthly basis. THE NAME OF THE GAME, an oddly structured series that ran for three seasons, starred Gene Barry, Robert Stack (1941's General Stillwell), and Tony Franciosa. Barry portrayed media magnate Glenn Howard, owner of Howard Publications, while Stack played an editor and Franciosa played a writer that worked for Howard Publications. Each time the show aired, one of the three stars would be featured in a story about their characters and their work for Howard Publications.
In L.A. 2017, Glenn Howard is on the way back from a top-secret meeting held by a group of top scientists and industrialists discussing the very serious threats the environment (abused by polution) holds for mankind. Howard, a friend of the President of the United States (who happened to be purposefully left in the dark about the meeting), drives along a rural highway outside of L.A. after the meeting, speaking into a tape recording he is making for the President about the meeting. As he drives, Howard opens the air vent to his automobile, letting a healthy dose of L.A. smog and auto exhaust into his car and lungs, which causes him to pass out at the wheel.
Time passes and Howard is now slumped over the wheel at the roadside, where his crashed auto has been found by a squad of men wearing odd uniforms and gas masks. Howard is awoken and transported across a suddenly foreign looking terrain--a desolate wasteland--to an underground facility. As he is revived, Howard finds himself in a new world, forty-six years in the future!
L.A. is now a small underground outpost where survivors of the ecological catastrophe Howard and the industrialists were discussing in 1971 has come true. After being grilled by the police state (run by psychiatrists!), Howard is indoctrinated into the new society by Dane (Barry Sullivan), the leader of the L.A. branch of the U.S., which is now run by big-business.
As Howard learns more about what has become of society, it becomes apparent that Dane and his cohorts are running things as a big-brother dictatorship (in an oppressive future society not unlike 1984, THX-1138, BRAZIL (both films share 'well-meaning' terrorist bombings), or Spielberg's own MINORITY REPORT), where personal freedoms, life, and love are no longer a benefit of freewill...
Spielberg, 24 years old at the time of filming, shot the film in twelve days for $375,000 on Universal soundstages, and on location in Calabasas and at the Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant. The limited budget shows, but Spielberg was able to make the most of a claustrophobic, talky piece through interesting camerawork and lighting schemes, and a strong cast of veteran actors.
The film was reviewed well, as Variety television reviewer Jack Hellman called L.A. 2017 "a dramatic thunderbolt on ecology." Perhaps in hindsight, this assessment of the success of the narrative is a bit overstated, as the message of the film, when one considers the "it was all a dream" dénouement of the piece seems extreme and heavy-handed. Regardless, Spielberg has said that L.A. 2017 "opened a lot of doors for me", and that, plus the chance to see the director at such an early stage in his career working in a long-form, high concept sci-fi mode is worth hunting the extremely rare film down. L.A. 2017 is very dated, but when compared to A.I. or MINORITY REPORT over 30 years later, a lot about the growth of an artist can be gleaned.
