Leslie Stevens was born February 3, 1924 and was the son of US Navy Admiral
Stevens. For a short period of time, Stevens assisted Orson Wellesı Mercury
Theatre during a 1939 Tour. In the 1950ıs, he first worked as a dramatist
for theatre (³The Lovers² aka ³The War Lord²), TV (³Playhouse 90²), and
cinema (Gore Vidalıs adapation for ³The Left-Handed Gun²).
In 1960, he directed his first feature film (³Private Property²): an
American New Wave manifesto, with producer Stanley Colbert, actor Warren
Oates and his second wife Kate Manx, cinematographer Ted McCord and his
young assistant named Conrad Hall. After the release of his first opus, he
founded his own company ³Daystar Productions² and teamed up with composer
Dominic Frontiere.
In 1961, he produced his first film from one of his play: ³The
Marriage-Go-Round² whose music score was Dominic Frontiereıs first
commission for the company and stared Stevensı close friend James Mason. In
1962, for United Artists, Stevens produced his first TV series entitled
³Stoney Burke²: a contemporary western starring three performers from the
Actorıs Studio (Jack Lord - Warren Oates - Bruce Dern) and Robert Dowdell;
besides this was also Conrad Hallıs first official onscreen credits as a
director of photography. Then Stevens returned to cinema and directed a
historical film in color entitled ³Heroıs Island², with and co-produced by
James Mason.
In 1963, Stevens had a deal with ABC and fashioned the first ³modernist²
science-fiction anthology entitled ³The Outer Limits² and hired a new man to
produce it: Alfred Hitchcockıs screenwriter Joseph Stefano. Stevens left his
own show after the first season due to a clash with the network and, in
1965, directed his last film for Daystar Productions: ³Incubus², a
demonology film spoken in Esperanto, starring William Shatner and his third
wife Allyson Ames. The film was never released in the USA and Daystar went
bankrupt.
In 1968, Stevens worked for Universal and produced the press-oriented series
³The Name of the Game² whose concept consists of exchanging the three leads.
In 1972, he returned to his technological utopia and launched his last
ambitious project for Warner Bros.: the spy series ³Search² with the same
change of leads. In the late 1970ıs, Stevens collaborated in some sci-fi
series: ³The Invisible Man² (with David McCallum) and its sequel ³Gemini
Man², the space Operas ³Battlestar Galactica² and ³Buck Rogers².
Notes:
It is said that both producers Gene Roddenberry (³Star Trek²) and Quinn
Martin (³The Invaders²) were fans of Daystar Productions. Roddenberry hung
around the sets during the shooting of season 1. Quinn Martin watched both
Stevensı series. Even, producer Irwin Allen watched ³Stoney Burke² to select
Robert Dowdell to play the character of Chip Morton for ³Voyage to the
Bottom of the Sea².
Conclusion:
We need a ³Stoney Burke² DVD release real fast. To paraphrase Allan Maxwell
(Cliff Robertson): ³Itıs more than interesting, itıs important!² Besides,
³The Rat Patrol² is now on DVD and features large portions from ³Stoney
Burke² scores. The choice, of course, is up to you my friends. Good night,
and, good luck!
