The Tenth Planet is #6 for VHS best sellers on Suncoast.com. I'd imagine
that's only for online sales and not the stores around the country.

In case anyone is interested, Peter Purves (Steven Taylor) is
one of the announcers on Crufts Dog Show 2001, shown on
Animal Planet channel today. It's repeated later tonight,
and knowing that channel, will probably be repeated yet
again during the month.

Hello

I know there aren't many posts to this list, but, as some this may
concern:

I've been accepted at University of East Anglia, Norwich, England,
for the 2001-02 academic year. I'll miss coming to the meetings. (I
know I only made one meeting this year but, the meetings tended to
coincide with my breaks from school ...)

See many of you at Convergence.

Big Finish, they are now available at the Rochester

Subject: UMN Directing Class Final Project

Hey Mike, can you forward this to the list?

Hey folks. I am looking for people who would be interested in participating
in my Directing Class final project. It will be a Dr Who spoof, patterned
after the Lenny Henry sketch, with a few elements from the Curse of Fatal
Death. I am asking you, the MNDWVS because I want people on it who A) Know
what Dr Who is and B) Like Dr Who and would have fun with this.

I have presented this to my instructor and she has given the green light.
She would however prefer that I not act in it and only direct/produce.
Therefore I have to recast the Doctor (ARRGH!). I get to be John
Nathan-Turner. Here is what I need for people:

(Remember that this is a comedy)

The Doctor: Any incarnation. You don't have to look exactly like a Doctor.
It be a big bonus if you fit in my Peter Davison costume, but not required.

2 Female companions: Rene' is one of them. She is planning on being Nyssa.
The other can be whatever companion she wants.

The Master: OK. I think it goes without saying that you must look the part,
or at least could look the part: either Del Gado or Ainley.

Cyber Dubya: Instead of Cyber Thatcher, it's Dubya. You MUST be able to do
the voice, and the screwing up of the English language. Dies by Cicada crew.
See Below.

2 cybermen: anyone willing to participate in running down corridors, wear
silver pants, and a tinfoil mask, unless that is you happen to have an
actual Cybersuit.

"Continuity Guy": He is my answer to the comic book guy from the Simpsons.
He appears regularly throughout the sketch complaining about....well,
continuity. Also dies by Cicada crew. See Below.

A local: remember the bum in Lenny Henry who says "Dr What?" Same thing.
Also dies by Cicada crew. See Below.

Cicada Crew: also stage crew with me. You move the Tardis cutout and
make-shift counsol and a few other props. For those of you who weren't at
Gallifrey: In the cabaret, there was a running gag where David Stone was
unanimously voted off the Island and a brit writer stood up and talked about
Cicadas. He was then mobbed by the other writers and carried outside. This
is what you do to the Local, Dubya, and CG (Continuity Guy). The latter two
are tricked into talking about Cicadas and are mobbed by you and carried off
stage. I need at least 5 people. The more the merrier.

The project is Saturday May 5 (the Saturday before Marscon) at the Rarig
Center on the UMN West Bank Campus. It's an all day event for me cuz I'm
forced to watch all the projects, but you don't have to. Once I get an exact
time on when we perform I'll let everyone know. This sketch will be no more
than 15 minutes.

Once I get volunteers, I'll give you the synopsis. If anyone would like to
play the 5th Doctor, I'll bring my costume and we'll see if you fit.

Subject: Last Months Countdown
TelesnapGuy@...
Send Email Send Email

Several people have asked for the list of episodes from last month's
countdown, so here they are. These are the Ten Most Influential Episodes of
Doctor Who - not the Ten Best or Ten Favorites. Some of these aren't even
liked by many fans, but all of them highlight a trend that would play a big
part in the series.

10) Ever since their introduction, the Time Lords had been a mysterious
force and almost omnipotent. However, with one episode this was all to
change. Suddenly and terribly the Time Lords became more "Human". They had
gone from magnificent Lords to doddering politicians.
The Deadly Assassin Part Two

9) The Doctor exiled to one place and in one time - surely this can't be.
While the fans of the series patiently waited the series did it's best to
break out of it's own self-imposed exile. Finally after three years the Time
Lord could wander all of Time and Space again. And, two special "friends"
came along to wish him and the series well.
The Three Doctors Episode Four

8) Not considered to be a classic among fans, this episode more than any
other televised highlights the "Cartmel Masterplan" - which would alter the
series in its final years and lay down a foundation for the future...
Silver Nemesis Part Three

7) For every hero there is THE villain. While the Daleks had been around for
years, The Master was the antithesis of the Doctor - a stroke of genius both
in creation and execution...
Terror of the Autons Episode One

6) Over the years Doctor Who had seen many producers come and go, but only
one would change the series more than any other. Whether for good or bad,
John Nathan-Turner left a mark on the series that can not be denied...
The Leisure Hive Part One

5) Although several other London-based stories had already come and gone,
this serial cemented a format that would follow the series through to the
end - the era of U.N.I.T. and the Brigadier had arrived...
The Invasion Episode Two

4) The end of the black and white era of Dr Who created new ideas and again
breathed new life into the series. For once, we knew where the Doctor was
from and saw a glimpse of his people - the Time Lords...
The War Games Episode Ten

3) Though they were not the immediate hit that popular legend has made them,
the Daleks first appearance generated a lot of word-of-mouth. Within a year
they would rival the good Doctor for popularity. One thing is certain, the
series wouldn't be here today if not for the villains from Skaro.
The Survivors

2) Considered standard practice today, the idea of "change" or "regeneration
" was a concept that changed not only Doctor Who, but it proved that a
popular series can be rejuvenated and go on, and on, and on...
The Tenth Planet Episode 4

1) The most influential episode is, of course, the most obvious. This one
started it all; it laid the groundwork for the whole series and still stands
up as a classic against the best television dramas...

I've seen both "Endgame" by Terrance Dicks and "King of Terror" by
CONvergence 2000 guest Keith Topping at some local bookstores.

I've also had reports of sightings of some of the recent videos at
Suncoasts, like "Planet of the Daleks" and "Curse of Fatal Death", but I
haven't seen them yet myself.

The new books seem to be showing up on schedule again -- I saw both
The Turing Test and Independence Day at one of the bookstores at the
Mall of America, and Dr Who Magazine #296 was available at Dreamhaven.

As you may be aware from sources like Doctor Who Alliance, several
books from earlier this year weren't distributed properly in the USA,
including the important turning-point novels Ancestor Cell and The
Burning, and according to reports won't be available here until
something like April 2001. However, you can import these books from
a source like amazon.co.uk and get them relatively quickly if you
must... (I know I did. :) )
