Subject: Miami Vice Convention Developments
ej502002
Send Email Send Email

As discussed previously, the 20th Anniversary Miami Vice Convention was moved from Sept. 16-19 to Sept 29-Oct. 3 at the request of local civic officials to enable the cities to provide financial support for the Convention should Universal decide to become involved to help make the celebration a major event in the Miami region.

My contact in the Miami Beach Office of Film and Print has informed me that Universal finally got back to him and confirmed that they are very interested in our plans and would very much like to include our Convention in their plans for a major promotion of Miami Vice.  However, Universal is looking at dates much later than our time frame.  The local governments are willing to work with Universal on its schedule, and although they understood that we might not be able to, or want to, change the date of our gathering, they asked if we could consider either moving the Convention several months down the road to 2005 or alternatively possibly holding our gathering as planned in the fall and have a larger, more public event at the later date.

After consulting with the people who have paid the registration fee, and other participants we decided to go ahead with our get-together with the originally planned events but on the revised dates, September 29 - Oct 3.  However, I will continue to work with the city officials to obtain support and help from them as well as from Universal for these and other events.  Additionally, as Universal seems to be very much interested in making a Miami Vice Convention part of their plans down the road, I will continue investigating the idea of working with Universal and civic officials on a major celebration at that time in addition to our Convention in the fall.  I will keep you updated on any developments.

If you have any comments or suggestions, especially with regard to whether there is support for participating in a later event as well as our fall Convention please send them to me at mvconvention@... .  I am also planning to put together a 'wish list' of things we would like Universal or the local government to do for us.  If you have any ideas please send them to me as well.

Further details of these developments are available on the Convention website http://www.members.shaw.ca/mvconv04/

Universal's Action and Suspense Series -- Newly Available To Own on DVD --
Dominate Decades

Universal's strength in the television action genre is once again flexed with the recent first-time-ever DVD release of A-TEAM, and the upcoming DVD releases of KNIGHT RIDER and MAGNUM P.I. The trend continues when MIAMI VICE, the television show that captured a decade and defined popular culture, will be released on DVD. Executive produced by director Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider, Ali) and Dick Wolf (Law & Order franchise), the multiple Emmy®- winning action-packed police drama, MIAMI VICE, set trends in fashion, music and filmmaking. Starring Don Johnson (Sonny Crockett) and Philip Michael Thomas (Rico Tubbs), MIAMI VICE is set under the pulse and rhythm of the glamorous resort city of Miami and is juxtaposed against the seedy haunts of the drug underworld. Led by a notable line-up of season one guest stars including Bruce Willis, Jimmy Smits ("NYPD Blue"), Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) and John Turturro (O Brother Where Art Thou?), MIAMI VICE: SEASON ONE, will be a must-own for any DVD fan.

Get ready for the first season of LAS VEGAS on DVD -- the fast-paced, sexy drama that follows the elite Las Vegas surveillance team charged with maintaining the security of one of "Sin City's" largest resorts and casinos. The slick, stylish NBC hit LAS VEGAS, was the highest rated drama among 18-49 year olds of the 2003-2004 season. Big Ed Deline (James Caan) is the head of the surveillance team for the Montecito Resort & Casino, as well as the newly appointed President of Operations. His right-hand man is Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel). They deal with card-counting cheaters, costly streaks of random luck and rival casinos stealing their big-money players. If the job-related pressures weren't enough, Big Ed recently found Danny in bed with his only daughter, Delinda (Molly Sims). The first season of LAS VEGAS also includes an impressive line-up of guest stars: Paris Hilton, Alec Baldwin, Dennis Hopper, Sugar Ray, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sean Astin, Wayne Newton, Little Richard, and Penn & Teller.

Go to http://www.miami-vice.org There is quite a bit about the
Daytona replicas in the FAQ section.
Here is a snippet --

Crockett's Daytona Spyder was actually a look-alike replica,
built using a 1980 Corvette chassis with Ferrari-designed
body panels and real Ferrari hardware inside. According to
Popular Mechanics, the original replica was "spotted on a
lot in Newport Beach by the show's producer."

Corvette engine, frame and drivetrain ... McBurnie coachworks conversion. You could tell the difference from a distance by looking for the front vent windows ... corvettes didn't have them.

belmquist

By Marla Matzer Rose

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - It certainly wasn't a single
driving force behind their recent megamerger, but NBC and Vivendi
Universal are beginning to reap the benefits of synergy by releasing
NBC-aired TV titles on DVD through Universal's home video arm.

First-season sets of "The Apprentice" and "American Dreams" will
join releases of such vault series as "Miami Vice" and "Columbo" in
coming weeks as Universal Home Entertainment raids the NBC schedule
and its own vault for nuggets.

"DVD is really taking the forefront of thought on the film side, and
you're beginning to see that on the TV production side," said Ken
Graffeo, executive vp marketing at Universal Home Entertainment. "It
allows you to offer new material to fans, to let them time-shift and
to let them watch these shows commercial-free, which they love."

Universal has been in the booming TV-to-DVD space in a smaller way
before, releasing such hit box sets as "Law & Order" and "Battlestar
Galactica." But Graffeo said this is the company's first major push
into the field.

"I think we'll have three or four of these releases per month going
forward," he said.

The merger doesn't mean that Universal will have first dibs on all
NBC-aired shows. The producing studio is unlikely to give up video
rights to hits like "Friends," produced and distributed by Warner
Bros., and Graffeo said many of NBC's older shows already have been
licensed out.

But it does allow the companies to capitalize on shows it has a hand
in producing, including "The Apprentice," which it produces with
reality guru Mark Burnett. Graffeo added that cross-promotion with a
network can really help sales, as it did recently when Universal
promoted its release of the first season of "Monk" along with the
show's new season debut on the USA Network.

There are 2 official VHS tapes - Brother's Keeper (the pilot episode) and Prodigal Son (the 2-part season 2 opener).  Prodigal Son is easy to find on Amazon.com but Brother's Keeper - or Miami Vice the movie as it is also called - is a bit harder to find especially if you want a new one.  But you can usually find a used one on eBay or Amazon.com if you keep looking and sometimes there's even a new unopened one.

There is also the Columbia House series - 5 or 6 tapes with 2 episodes each.  Some of the episodes have the music switched though, but other than that they are complete without any missing scenes.  I'm not sure, but you might be able to get them directly from Columbia House.  Other than that there are no other official VHS tapes of Miami Vice though a number of people sell illegal copies taped off the television.  From what I've heard most of them are a rip-off - poor quality and expensive, and unless they are taped from the original showing, they are missing the scenes that the syndicated channel chopped.  With the DVDs coming out soon it would seem a waste of money to me to buy home-made VHS tapes.

If you are coming to the Convention and are interested in attending the Phil Collins concert we can get a block of up to 60 tickets together.  Cost is $70 per seat for tickets in the upper level.

These seats would cost $65 plus service charge through Ticketmaster.  The extra $5 is the service charge we have to pay to Office Depot Center.  Ticketmaster's service charge is $9 so we actually get them slightly cheaper than going through Ticketmaster.

Please let me know if your interested so I can let the center know how many tickets we will need.  I am not sure at this point how to make payment - I will let you know when I find out.  Also, my contact at the ODC is also checking into whether we might be able to get into a meet and greet with Phil - no promises, but keep your fingers crossed.  mvconvention@...

I have been working this week with Peter Kuys, Chairman AAO Music INC.  discussing some exciting new events for the Convention which is why I haven't sent out a planning update.  Through AAO Music, Jan Hammer is releasing a special 20th Anniversary Edition of The Best of Miami Vice with one new song and re-vamped versions of the Miami Vice Theme and Crockett's Theme - Elliott said the new versions are fabulous.  I just received this email from Peter:

------------------------------------------
I'm pleased to tell you that JAN HAMMER is confirmed for an appearance at Spec's Music
store in Miami on Friday afternoon ( exact timing to follow ) Spec's is inviting the convention members to meet & greet with him there ( as discussed this could be the last stop on your famous sites visits ) - he will be launching his 20th anniversary CD that afternoon at Spec's.
YOU CAN GO PUBLIC WITH THIS AND THE ART CAMPAIGN I FORWARDED YOU FROM
NOW

Peter is working on some other plans involving Jan and the Convention that have not yet been confirmed - I'll let you know when I can provide more news.

I'm still reeling!

Only one new song? But there are still so many unreleased! I guess one more is better than nothing…

Which song/cue/episode is it?

How about a convention only exclusive CD with more unreleased songs?

I would not care (and I don’t think most others would) if many of the tracks were short, even under a minute.

I know it is a lot of work to take the short cues and create more complete tracks from them.

We still don’t have the slow theme used in the pilot on CD!

Thanks for the news!

- Matt

Only one new song? But there are still so many unreleased! I guess one more is better than nothing…

Which song/cue/episode is it?

How about a convention only exclusive CD with more unreleased songs?

I would not care (and I don’t think most others would) if many of the tracks were short, even under a minute.

I know it is a lot of work to take the short cues and create more complete tracks from them.

We still don’t have the slow theme used in the pilot on CD!

Thanks for the news!

I asked Peter Kuys about the new track - this is his reply:

The newly released song is: South Beach and Jan says about it:
"This is a track that I wrote during the Miami Vice period. Originally I was going to record it for my album "Escape from Television", or possibly use it as a theme in one of the Miami Vice Episodes, but for one reason or another in never happened. I finally recorded it especially for this album as a bonus track"

Peter also said that  the main themes (Miami Vice and Crocket's Theme) are completely updated 04 issues and GREAT.

And you can't beat the price - $9.99 - Jan's manager, Elliott Sears, told me that the CD will be an exclusive to Spec's. I am told that Spec's will be providing support for the Convention including printing posters of the logo and posting it in their stores.
As for those other great songs.....

When I was speaking with Elliott he mentioned that Jan had received requests to release about 30 pieces from the show - many of these are short snippets written for certain scenes, often as filler for, or to introduce one of the songs.

According to Elliott, to just release the snippets is not something Jan would like to do as he is a song composer and does not want to release bits of music that are not complete.  If he were to release the pieces, he would create a song based around the piece and to do that would mean having something that was long enough to have a theme that he would want to work with.  Out of the 30 or so requests, about 20 would fit into that category.

Elliot also mentioned that it would not be a useful exercise from a practical point of view.  To find these snippets would mean going through all the episodes on the master recording which would be a time consuming effort.  Then there would be the cost of putting them together and producing the CD.  As Universal owns the rights to all the original pieces of music, they are the ones who would benefit financially as Jan would only see a very small royalty with Universal taking the lion's share of any profit.  The only way that Jan would see a financial benefit is if the song was changed substantially from the master, in which case it would not be considered Universal's property.  So the likelihood of ever seeing a CD with those small bits of music that so brilliantly define many of the scenes is pretty much nil.  But the idea of creating songs from some of the pieces may happen one day.

Thanks EJ!

The release of a previously unheard track from the MV period is definitely exciting.

I hope after the successful release of the MV Season I DVD will inspire Jan to do a project based on those previously unreleased MV cues.

Now since I cannot make the convention, anybody willing to buy me a couple of copies of the exclusive CD? J
