I went to punk shows in the mid 80s. The club wasnt
too unauthentic. Some of the kids in the cafeteria
have trendy 1999 haircuts - look at looks and books

"Noshing & Moshing" is certainly a gem episode (note Franco's
heart-melting aesthetics), however, it's one of the rare times I find
flaw with the show's set direction and costumes. As one who grew up in
an underground music scene (raised by real 80's punk parents), to me
The Armpit club's patrons, with the exception of Jenna and a few
others, are way too '90's alt-rock'-looking than authentic 1980's
punkers would be. Case in point: the piercing girl, whose likeness you
can find today in any cheesy head shop.

Did anyone else make this observation? It's just startling because the
majority of the series is so dead-on when it comes to authenticity.

I'll cut the creators some slack, though, because I doubt that any of
the former geeks took part in Michigan's burgeoning punk scene a la
1980...

Apparently, status as a F&G nut goes hand in hand with that of a
public radio junkie (myself)...and that bedroom scene really does
translate well as audio drama.

Enjoy!

In the episode where Daniel turns "punk" we hear him listening to the
Black Flag song "Rise Above." In one of the episodes of Declared we
hear a song by someone that uses the opening guitar part from "Rise
Above" in the song. It's not a punk song by the guitar part is very
recognizable. In F & G Daniel is seen several times wearing a Black
Flag shirt but the band name is taken off. It's a army green shirt
with a yellow square on it and the drawing is of two cheerleaders
fighting. This was the cover art for Black Flag's "Jealous Again" 12".

Judd Apatow, now experiencing a well-earned commercial boost in his
success thanks to '40 Year Old Virgin' & 'Knocked Up,' recently said
in an interview :

"everything that we're doing now is almost like we're continuing to
do Freaks and Geeks"

in regards to his production company and all of the projects that have
followed since the F&G demise, which he calls

"devastating. I don't know if I was emotionally equipped to deal with
it."

Good words to hear and to know that the show seems ever-present in his
work, and, in yet another way, will continue to live on.

Here's another one that slipped my mind the other day:

All three of the improv players in the anti-drinking skits show up at
Lindsay's keg party, and what they do there tells us a lot about
them. Harris tries to drink beer through a funnel and makes clear
that his involvement in the skits was just about resume buffing.
Cindy shows up with a friend from Boca Raton who can't wait to get at
the beer but explains sweetly to Sam that it's OK because she's the
designated driver. (But think about that for a second: Presumably,
Cindy, like Sam, is a high school freshman -- she's in his science
class. How could she be a designated driver unless, like Daniel,
she's been left back a couple of times.) Millie is the only one who
believes this stuff, with her grim determination to have more fun
than anyone else without benefit of alcohol.

Does anyone know the name of the song used as the instrumental tune during
the porn, or, who performs it? It's a wonderful little piece.

All apologies if this topic has been covered before, I am writing from my
Inbox, not the Group page.

Thanks,
Jen

I'd want to hang out with Neil - okay - date Neil. Why? Because if you
study him throughout the show, he's basically the only one who knows what
women want. He's so smooth! He has the best sense of humor, he's smart, he
has nice features, he's got a heart, he's mature for his age, the whole nine
yards. Yup, I'd hang with Neil and hopefully he'd make me his girlfriend
along the way.

One of the things I love about "Freaks and Geeks" is the attention to
detail by the writers and the nice, subtle touches that result. For
example:

Bill, who thinks of the idea of getting a keg of non-alcoholic beer for
Lindsay's keg party, is the only person to get drunk at the party.

Lindsay's feelings for Neal's older brother, Barry, seem to parallel
Neal's feelings for her. The difference is that, unlike Neal, she's
finally gotten old enough -- and, let's face it, attractive enough --
to be noticed.

When Sam's moment of truth as a pitcher comes, the batter is Cindy's
boyfriend, Todd Schellinger. (Incidentally, I was impressed by Martin
Starr's acting in this scene. He was able to do Bill's geek gait even
while running after Todd's blooper.)

There must be lots that I've missed. Please share.

My reaction to Lindsay is a lot like Neal's. I love her from afar. But
I guess the one I'd really most like to hang out with is Sam. He just
seems easy and unpretentious. The only place you'd have to watch it is
if there was a Steve Martin movie you didn't totally love.
(Incidentally, one episode I have a hard time with is the one where
Cindy goes from good to bad. I have a hard time believing that Sam
could not know her pretty darn well -- including what type of movies
she likes -- after all those two-hour phone conversations.) Neal might
not be quite as easy to get along with as Sam. But he shows real class
at times, when he shuts down Lindsay's keg party for her and when he
welcomes Eli to the lunch table immediately after losing Maureen to the
cheerleaders.

Thanks for the welcome, Chris! I don't know if you
folks have done this before, but it occurs to me that
it would be fun for people to make lists of their 10
favorite lines (or exchanges between characters). Even
though I haven't seen all the shows yet, I think it
would be a challenge to keep it to 10.

Best,
Alex

I don't watch much TV, and I just discovered "Freaks and Geeks"
within the last month or so thanks to Joan Holiday, one of the
coolest DJs in the Hartford-Springfield area. She mentioned on the
air that a bunch of episodes had appeared on YouTube. I checked it
out and quickly got hooked. When I ran out of shows and clips to
watch there, I bought the DVD set.

I haven't even watched all the episodes yet. But I'm in love with
Lindsay, even though, if she was real and I was the right age, I'd
have about as much chance with her as Neal does! I grew up
worshipping certain hippy chicks -- one in particular -- and Lindsay
brings back some potent feelings.

The great thing about the show is how it manages to touch real
emotions. The pilot is just a great TV show, especially the scene
that the creators believe may have been responsible for the show's
cancellation, where the special ed kid (sorry, I haven't got his name
yet) gets upset about Lindsay saying he's retarded, falls off the
bleachers and breaks his arm. The scene where Lindsay tells Sam about
the life-changing experience of seeing her grandmother die and the
final dance scene also are wonderful. I love the way "Sail Away" goes
from slow to fast just as Sam gets ready to dance with Cindy, that
always-sweet, always-kind cheerleader who always seems to break his
heart.

My second-favorite show is "Girlfriends and Boyfriends," wherein
everyone in sight warns Lindsay about the horrendous dangers of sex,
and she ends up finding that Nick is capable of something none of
them has mentioned, romance.

Last night, I was watching the show about the fake IDs and the new
girl from Florida, and I noticed that long look Cindy sends after Sam
when he brushes by her in the corridor with only a passing hello.

Greetings, fellow Freaks fan!

I'm not so sure about downloading the episodes, but did you know that
they're all for sale in two high-quality box sets?

The standard edition on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Freaks-Geeks-Complete/dp/B0001EQHXO/sr=8-
1/qid=1164821339/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-7492873-5257242?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

The yearbook edition on FreaksandGeeks.com:
http://www.freaksandgeeks.com/dvd/index.html

Both wonderful, of course.

Happy hunting - or buying, if you feel so moved. :)

You can probably find the full series on ebay for cheap-I paid about $60 for a new copy.
