A brand new RPG for the brilliant-but-cancelled Judd Apatow/Paul Feig
series "Freaks & Geeks" is about to start and needs YOUR participation!

The setting is September of 1981. The summer has gone by and Lindsay and
Kim are home from their tour with the Grateful Dead. All-new
misadventures and hijinks will ensue as the students enter a brand new
year of high school.

We desperately need the following characters before we can start:

Nick Andopolis
Sam Weir
Bill Haverchuck
Cindy Sanders
Amy Andrews
Millie Kentner

But there are a LOT more open characters. Made-up characters will also be
accepted. The character limit is 5 per player.

If anyone's interested you can join up at:
http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/mckinleyrpg
or just contact me directly.

Hey fellow F&G fans!

I just created a new RPG based on everyone's favorite show and I'm
desperately seeking tons of characters!

For those of you who aren't familiar, play-by-email RPGs are kind of
like round-robin storytelling, only each participant is responsible
for a specific character(s) actions. It's super fun and a great way
to create all new misadventures and plotlines.

This RPG will take place 2 weeks after the series finale, after
Lindsay and Kim come home from the Grateful Dead tour. Beyond that,
the plot can twist and turn any way we like to - it's up to you what
you want to do with your character(s)!

To sign up as a player, visit the group homepage at:
http://www.yahoogroups.com/freaks_and_geeks_rpg

or just email me! :)

The current Cast List is as follows:

THE FREAKS:
Lindsay Weir . .. … OPEN
Daniel Desario . .. … OPEN
Nick Andopolis . .. … OPEN
Kim Kelly . .. … taken by Abbey (but may be persuaded to give her
up, let me know if you want her)
Ken Miller . .. … taken by Abbey
Sara (Nick's disco girlfriend) . .. … taken by Abbey
Amy Andrews (Ken's girlfriend) . .. … OPEN

THE GEEKS:
Sam Weir . .. … taken by Abbey (but may be persuaded to give him up,
let me know if you want him)
Neal Schweiber . .. … OPEN
Bill Haverchuck . .. … OPEN
Millie Kentner . .. … OPEN
Gordon Crisp . .. … OPEN

THE OTHER GUYS:
Cindy Sanders (Sam's ex-girlfriend) . .. … OPEN
Alan White (the geeks' arch-nemesis) . .. … OPEN
Vicki Appleby (Cindy's friend) . .. … OPEN
Todd Schellinger (Cindy's love interest) . .. … OPEN
Eli (the mentally challenged boy) . .. … OPEN

THE ADULTS:
Jean Weir . .. … OPEN
Harold Weir . .. … taken by Abbey
Dr. Vic Schweiber (Neal's Dad) . .. … OPEN
Mr. Andopolis (Nick's Dad) . .. … OPEN
Gloria Haverchuck (Bill's Mom) . .. … OPEN
Jeff Rosso (guidance counselor) . .. … OPEN
Coach Ben Fredricks . .. … OPEN

If you want to take multiple chars, I recommend taking 1 from each
of the above groups. Made-up chars will be allowed, but must pass
moderator inspection first, and you MUST have at least 1 canon char
also. Please forward all made-up char bios and avatar pics to
screwydamexo@... for approval before posting.

Game will start once Lindsay, Daniel, Nick, Neal, and Bill are
taken. Looking forward to playing! :)

Thanks so much guys!

~ Abbey :)

I also hope that everyone (anyone?) got a chance to read this interview
of Linda C. done by The Onion.

http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/linda_cardellini

The Onion has always had a soft spot for "Freaks & Geeks," and it
definitely shows through in this interview. The fellow talking to
Linda obviously paid attention and asks some interesting questions.

Also, some excellent "comments" from the peanut gallery, many of whom
are, obviously, closet F&G groupies.

I thought Sara was a great character, particularly in
the last episode. She was so in love with Nick, and he
was so not over Lindsay. You could just feel the
heartbreak coming.

I'd say there's as much a chance of this happening as there is of
finding the "lost" 10" episodes.

Did Lindsay go to an Ivy League college?
Are Lindsay and Kim still friends?
Is Mr Russo still the guidance counsellor?
Did Ken inherit his dad's company or did he sell it and go to
Hawaii?
Did Nick graduate high school?
Is Daniel pumping gas for a living?
And Sam, Neil , Bill and Harris...where are they now? Did they
become cool?
Is Allan still a dickhead?
Did Milly become a slapper? (well...she was snogging Tommy
so the potential was there)
Was High school the pinnacle of Cindy Sanders life?
I think it would be geat to see a one off special to see what
became of them all.

I don't mean to sound like Cindy, but one of the sad
things about "Freaks and Geeks" being cancelled after
only one season is that Linda Cardellini never got to
sing for us. If anyone hasn't seen her cosmically sexy
rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" in a
deleted scene from the first live-action "Scooby Doo"
movie, follow this link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5lcsKOEIgs

If it doesn't work, just go to You Tube, search on
Linda Cardellini and go to about the fourth page. This
entry is entitled, 'VERA (sic) SINGS "CAN'T TAKE MY
EYES OFF YOU"'. There's a much lower quality version
of the same scene also posted on You Tube, but accept
no substitutes. Watch the good one.

I wish you luck in the RPG. If I had the time I'd do it. At first I
thought it was RPG you play around a table. That would be cool too.
Buy the box set so you can watch them whenever you want to.

Hey guys, my name's Abbey and I'm a relatively new fan of the show -
recently rented the entire series from Netflix and went through it
like lightning, totally fell in love! I can't believe the show didn't
make it (but then again, I can, since TV sucks). What I really fell in

Anyway, I'm kind of a chronic roleplayer/fanfic guru, so immediately

I just saw the movie "Lost and Delirious," which I
liked a lot for some of the same reasons I like
"Freaks and Geeks." It was a sympathetic look at
teenage passions, and the main characters were pretty
girls! (as are three of F&G's main characters, if you
include Cindy as a main character.) But one thing I
didn't like about "Lost and Delirious" is that it
ended with the central character committing suicide.
That's a cheap trick. It's an easy way to leave the
audience feeling moved. I also worry that such movie
scenes may encourage teenagers going through their own
painful dramas to kill themselves, particularly in
that the suicide in "Lost and Delirious" is a very
public grand gesture.

When I was in eighth grade, my English class was
assigned to write short stories, which were shared
with the class. In an exceptional number of them, the
main character ended up dead. That's how eighth
graders express deep feeling.

But we have a right to expect better from professional
writers, and we got it from the writers of "Freaks and
Geeks." They were able to find drama in the kinds of
events that really do create drama in the lives of
ordinary people -- starting to doubt your beliefs,
smashing up the family car, finding out that you're
not as good a drummer as you hoped you were, dressing
foolishly to try to impress someone, then coming to
regret it bitterly. To me, one of the most dramatic
scenes in the series is when Sam's parents are
pressing him to tell them who egged him, and he looks
at Lindsay and says something like, "Some dirtbags."
It's perfect. He doesn't turn her in, but he's
brutally frank about what he thinks of her.

I realize that some of this has to do with the
realities of making a TV show. You can't kill off
major characters most of the time, and you have to
deal with the network's ideas of what their audience
will accept. But this is another example of how those
practical pressures can help to produce quality
writing.

Get this music lovers! In the first episode when Nick
makes fun of disco: oooha, oooha - that is from the
song he dances to in the last episode: Groove Train by
Heatwave. Did they plan it that way? Probably not but
it ties things up nicely! I now own every single song

One thing I really like about Nick is that he mostly
doesn't do musical snobbery. I say "mostly" because he
does comment that "disco sucks" in the pilot episode.
But when Millie starts singing "Jesus is Just All
Right" at the keg party, he's the one who joins in.
When Mr. Rosso takes out his guitar and sings an Alice
Cooper song during a counseling session, most of the
other freaks come out rolling their eyes and talking
about how awful it was, but Nick is smiling and
talking about how great it was. Later on, he dances to
jazz with Lindsay's parents.

That's why I think it's believeable that he follows
his new girlfriend into disco in the final episode.
But more importantly, his openness about music is a
key part of why I find Nick such a likeable character,
even though he's a kind of goofy guy who smokes too
much pot and gets way too intense about his
relationships with girls.

I hope this post makes it. My last one seems to have
disappeared into electronic lala land.

A neat thing about "Freaks and Geeks" is that the writers seemed more
interested in conveying emotion than in writing clever dialog. When a
boy, evidently on a dare, asks Lindsay, "If I gave you a joint, would
you have sex with me?" there's no witty rejoinder or nerdy
articulateness. She simply replies, "What?" A quick shot of her facial
expression tells us all we need to know. She takes it on the chin, and
so do we.

Similarly, when Lindsay's parents surround her on the basement couch
and tell her how her father lost his virginity with a Korean
prostitute, she says, "Please stop!" Again, Linda Cardellini's
expressive face tells us what we need to know without a lot of wasted
words.

Some of this may be a function of the medium. TV writers operate under
strict time constraints and have to get their messages across
economically. But at times those constraints can contribute to good
dramatic writing.

Good insights. The gum thing...you never see anyone
smoke on the smoking patio in the pilot.

I've been watching the auditions on the DVDs lately, and one of the
most interesting parts is how the script changed from this stage to the
shows that ended up getting made -- specifically how many smoking
references got cut out. The gum in the pilot episode started out being
smokes, and Lindsay made clear to Millie that she had nothing more to
talk about unless Millie wanted to have a smoke. I actually kind of
like the semi-mysterious way the smoking thing was handled in the pilot
episode. But I suspect that this was a punch that got pulled for
commercial acceptability, like the one-sided, "Reefer Madness" approach
to marijuana (which apparently makes small children dislike you, among
other things). This is one area where "That 70's Show" was actually
gutsier than "Freaks and Geeks."

yea, it's impossible to find, I don't think it's in the script books, just the
special dvd and
possibly the old offical website. I reaaallly want to read it! But it isn't
archived anywhere
online. (at least that I've been able to find). I managed to find to an longer
version of the
pilot episode script, but not "The Bus". This is becoming some what of an
obsession of
mine.

Shes reading an original punk zine in the store. You
can tell- its all yellowed. Plus...the black flag
record. And daniel wearing a black flag shirt in a few
episodes. These two thing tell me someone knew
something about that era.

Hey all,
I just recently discovered this amazing show, and therefore, missed out on the
kick ass
yearbook edition that is so impossible to find now. I've been looking for the
transcript of the
unshot episode "The Bus" everywhere online, and I can't seem to find it. I kind
of feel like I'm
missing out on an episode:-( sooo, I was wondering if any of you guys had it
copied down
anywhere and would be willing to send it to me? Or perhaps an overview of what
happened in
it? Or if its already posted some where, where that is? That would be awesome:-)

  Thanks

Daniel's interest Jenna, the punk girl from the convenience store,
could pass for 80's punk as well as its throwback today. She's a
different actress (Shawnee Free Jones) from Nick's ex Heidi (Samantha
Shelton).

The ear-piercing chick (Bianca Kajilch), however, is the one who I
think brings the credibility level to a screaming halt. She looks like
she just walked off the set of one of those magical
witchy/vampirey/'alt-scene' WB shows.

But again, I'm not aware of the scene cred held by F&G producers in
their prime, so I understand and can forgive the fauluts in the attempt.
