I've been watching the auditions on the DVDs lately, and one of the
most interesting parts is how the script changed from this stage to the
shows that ended up getting made -- specifically how many smoking
references got cut out. The gum in the pilot episode started out being
smokes, and Lindsay made clear to Millie that she had nothing more to
talk about unless Millie wanted to have a smoke. I actually kind of
like the semi-mysterious way the smoking thing was handled in the pilot
episode. But I suspect that this was a punch that got pulled for
commercial acceptability, like the one-sided, "Reefer Madness" approach
to marijuana (which apparently makes small children dislike you, among
other things). This is one area where "That 70's Show" was actually
gutsier than "Freaks and Geeks."
