KATH and Kim will be back, says creator and star Jane Turner, but she doesn't
know when or in what form.

Turner and Gina Riley, the creative forces behind the hit show, have taken a
break since the fourth series aired on the Seven Network in late 2007.

Riley has appeared onstage as Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago, while Turner has
recently returned from visiting Dadaab refugee camp on Kenya's northern border
with Somalia with Australia for UNHCR.

But Turner and Riley are now busy writing again for their much-loved characters.

"We've laid low for a couple of years. I've been trying to live down Kath. I
can't live her down so she's just come back," Turner told AAP.

We love doing them so we'll find a spot for them somewhere hopefully again."

Kath and Kim premiered on the ABC in 2002, with three more series following.

Turner said it was important for them to recharge the batteries before diving
back into the comedy writing.

"It was a big long haul doing Kath and Kim and I really wanted to have a big
break and do other things," she said.

"So we're busy writing, which is great. That's the part I love the most."

Since the final series aired co-star Magda Szubanski, who plays sports-obsessed
Sharon Strzelecki, is a shadow of her former self, having lost 36kg.

Turner joked they wouldn't accept a skinny Sharon.

"Oh no, we'll have to feed her up," Turner said.

"She'll be skinnier than us."

"We've been writing a few things and we've sort of got Kath and Kim stuff we're
going to do - not sure if it's going to be a series or some other form, a stage
musical, I don't know."

I had a quick look at the internet movie database and it lists a character named
Linda, the
actress is Diane Sellers. Maybe the Sharon character's name has been changed.
Nothing has
been written about the Sharon character in the US version so I don't know.

TELEVISION network NBC has rolled out a massive advertising and billboard blitz
for the
U.S. version of Kath and Kim but it appears Americans do not really care about
the foxy
morons.

In the latest blow to the sitcom before its October 9 debut in the U.S., a
survey of potential
American viewers has given the show a big thumbs down.

NBC hoped the ratings bonanza it scored with the exclusive U.S. rights to the
Beijing
Olympics would provide a launching pad for Kath and Kim and other shows on its
autumn
schedule, including Heroes, The Office and game show Deal or No Deal.

The network aired ads for Kath and Kim and the other series in breaks between
Michael
Phelps' dominant performance in the pool and Usain Bolt re-writing the sprint
record
books on the track.

New York-based research firm, Frank N Magid Associates, conducted a survey to
discover
the impact the ads had on potential viewers.

The survey found while 45 per cent of TV viewers of NBC's Olympic coverage could
recall
seeing Deal or No Deal ads, Heroes (44 per cent) and The Office (38 per cent),
only 31 per
cent said they remembered seeing ads for Kath and Kim.

The survey gets worse for the sitcom.

Of the 31 per cent who remembered seeing the Kath and Kim ads, just 13 per cent
said
they were likely to watch the show from October.

The other shows fared much better.

The survey showed 31 per cent said they were likely to watch Deal or No Deal and
Heroes
while 28 per cent said they were likely to switch on The Office.

The poor results follow another disappointing survey for Kath and Kim, released
in July by
another New York research firm, Horizon Media.

The analysis pointed to Kath and Kim being one of the flops of the U.S. autumn
schedule.

NBC executives have gone out of their way to give Kath and Kim, set in suburban
Florida
and starring American actresses Selma Blair and Molly Shannon, a chance to
survive the
cut-throat U.S. TV market, where shows are axed after just one or two episodes
if the
ratings are dismal.

The series was originally slated to air on Tuesday nights but NBC switched it to
its
Thursday night comedy block with The Office, 30 Rock and My Name is Earl.

NBC also ordered 13 Kath and Kim episodes up front, a risky and expensive
gamble.

The network is pumping millions of dollars into promoting the sitcom, which is
being
executive produced by the stars and creators of the original Australian series,
Jane Turner
and Gina Riley.

Across the U.S., billboards have been put up featuring Blair and Shannon in
character with
silly quotes, such as: "What's paparazzi? Duh, pizza topping!" and "Rodeo Drive?
I love
cowboys!".

In Los Angeles, buses carry large Kath and Kim ads, the monstrous West Hollywood
shopping mall, the Beverly Centre, features 30m tall billboards, while an
intersection on
iconic Sunset Blvd has three billboards on opposing corners.

While promoting her new action film, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Blair, who
plays Kim,
said it may take a while for American audiences to get the feel of the show.
"The tone will
take a little to get used to," she said.

Selma Blair has revealed that she accepted a role in new US comedy Kath And Kim
because she was tired of filming on location.

The actress said she grew weary of being away from home after spending six
months shooting movie Hellboy II in Budapest.

She told Los Angeles Confidential magazine: "My life seemed really fragmented. I
wanted to stay in one place longer. So I thought it might be nice to go and do a
TV show."

The series, based on the Australian sitcom of the same name, focuses on the
dysfunctional relationship between Kim (Blair) and mum Kath (Molly Shannon).

NBC recently ordered seven additional episodes, extending the show's first
season to 13 half-hours.

THE world has had its first peek at America's Kath & Kim, and except for a
muffin top, bad
fashion and cheap jewellery, the foxy ladies look nothing like the Australian
originals.

NBC, the US TV network with the rights to the American version of the Australian
sitcom,
has begun airing commercials in the US to promote the new show.

Kath has lost the neat blonde perm famously worn by Jane Turner.

The actor who plays her, former Saturday Night Live comedian Molly Shannon,
instead
sports a short, shaggy auburn hairdo with thick blonde highlights.

Kim, played by Selma Blair, is as self-centred as her Fountain Lakes
counterpart. Kim also
squeezes into clothes three sizes too small, just like Kim as played by Gina
Riley.

America's Kim, instead of feasting on fistfuls of Tiny Teddies, maintains her
pudgy
waistline with nachos.

"This is Kim," the NBC promo announces. It shows Blair, squeezed into an
undersized pink
crop top, tight green shorts and, with muffin top showing, standing with
suitcases in the
foyer of her mother's suburban Florida home.

"Mum!" Blair yells.

An alarmed Shannon rushes around a corner wearing a green jumpsuit with a black
vinyl
belt.

"I'm getting a divorce," Blair screams. "It's over."

Shannon is mortified by the news that her daughter is moving back home.

The promo ends with the show's motto: "Kath and Kim — apparently you CAN go home
again."

The American Kath & Kim starts in the US on October 9.

THEY might be fictional characters, but Bridget Jones and Kath and Kim are being
blamed for the death of chardonnay.

Once the fashionable tipple of politicians and society doyennes, wine industry
observers say "cardonnay" is now more likely to be associated with Australia's
favourite suburban housewives and the Brit singleton famed for her enormous
knickers.

Leading UK wine writer Oz Clarke blames the decline in British chardonnay sales
(with 7.5 million fewer buys in the past 12 months compared to the previous
year) on the chardonnay-swilling Jones.

"Everyone appreciated it - until Bridget Jones," Mr Clarke said.

"She goes out on the pull, fails, goes back to her miserable bedsit, sits down,
pours herself an enormous glass of chardonnay, sits with mascara running down
her cheeks saying, 'Dear diary, I've failed again, I've poured an enormous glass
of chardonnay and I'm going to put my head in the oven.' Great marketing aid."

Glenn James, Foster's Group White Winemaker, said association with daggy
characters like Bridget and Kath Day-Knight has not helped the wine's profile.

"I hear the expression 'anything but chardonnay' often because the variety is
out of fashion," Mr James said. "Crisp dry white wine is in vogue right now, but
chardonnay is still our most significant white grape."

He believes the tide has turned on chardonnay because it was the most prevalent
style consumed in Australia. "Chardonnay became so dominant it became boring,"
Mr James said.

Foster's chardonnay sales were down 4.7 per cent in the year April, 2007 to
April, 2008 while sauvignon blanc sales increased 45.7 per cent.

Mr James believes sauvignon blanc will stay popular and varieties like pinot
gris, alberino and vermintino will gain momentum.

Professor of wine marketing at the University of South Australia Larry Lockshin
said chardonnay is not "a cool new thing".

"It's not growing, so companies put a lot of emphasis on what's growing," he
said. "Companies jump on the fad bandwagon because growth is good."

Australia's favourite white wine variety is now sauvignon blanc, and New
Zealand's Oyster Bay sauvignon blanc was the top-selling white by value last
year.

Tom Glenwright, sommelier at Sydney's Gazebo Wine Garden, said sauvignon blanc
was very popular, but patrons also enjoyed riesling, pinot gris, verdelho, and
gewurztraminer varieties.

STYLIST Patricia Field, who is responsible for the outfits on Sex and the City,
is turning her hand to the US version of Kath and Kim.

Confidential believes Field has signed to be the stylist on the soon-to-be
produced series.

Field was last week in Australia, before flying out for the New York premiere of
Sex and the City.

Kath and Kim sources said Field was hand-picked by producers to create the right
look for the American series.

She is known to produce looks that combine old and new clothes, including buying
from op shops.

Kath and Kim will air at 9.30pm on Thursday nights on NBC. It will follow
high-ratings comedy shows, My Name Is Earl and The Office.

American TV network NBC is so confident the US version
of Kath and Kim will be a hit with US audiences it
ordered six episodes of the show today.

It is common practice for a TV network to shoot just a
pilot episode for a new show to test its likely
success.

Often the pilot is not turned into a series and the
project is dropped.

NBC, however, will skip the pilot and shoot the six
episodes.

The US version of Kath and Kim, based on the popular
Australian sitcom, will star well-known American
actresses Molly Shannon and Selma Blair.

The series is expected to begin shooting six weeks
after the screenwriters' strike is resolved.

"This hilarious new series exemplifies how we are
changing the pilot process by ordering shows that we
believe in and green-lighting them straight to
series," NBC Entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman
said.

"We are confident that this proven international hit
will effortlessly translate to American audiences and
we couldn't be more excited that Molly and Selma will
be playing the leads."

Silverman has had huge success turning foreign TV
shows into US hits.

He bought the rights to the Colombian version of Ugly
Betty and the British series The Office and made
successful US versions out of both.

The US Kath and Kim, just like the Australian series,
will follow the dysfunctional relationship between
mother Kath and her daughter Kim.

Shannon, best known for her days as a star of Saturday
Night Live, will play Kath and Blair, who has starred
in romantic comedies A Guy Thing and The Sweetest
Thing, will become Kim.

The Australian stars of the sitcom, Gina Riley and
Jane Turner, will be executive producers of the US
series.

The three month screenwriters' strike is expected to
be resolved within the next week.

search, NBC has zeroed in on Selma Blair to star
opposite Molly Shannon in the high-profile comedy
pilot "Kath and Kim."

Based on the hit Australian series "Kath & Kim," the
NBC comedy focuses on the dysfunctional relationship
between Kath (Shannon) and her daughter Kim (Blair).

Casting the title characters has been considered
crucial to the success of the show. When the project
was first picked up to pilot by NBC in January 2007,
it was pushed to summer because of difficulties
casting the leads.

Following her breakthrough roles on the WB Network
comedy series "Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane" and in the
feature "Cruel Intentions," Blair went on to co-star
in such movies as "The Sweetest Thing" and "Legally
Blonde."

She next reprises her role as Liz Sherman in "Hellboy
II: The Golden Army," and will appear opposite Antonio

HE'S played Australia's favourite doddery uncle, a
dangerously inept Dundee-style outback adventurer and
a purveyor of fine sausages on top-rating Kath and
Kim.

Now, for his latest challenge, comic Glenn Robbins is
having a crack at hosting his own quiz show.

Robbins has left Channel Ten for the Seven Network to
make a new, irreverent - and possibly irrelevant -
quiz/chat show, called Out of the Question.

The talented comedian will be joined by three
celebrity guests each week to explore world events -
and whatever else comes up - from a unique
perspective.

"I've worked on so many shows with my mates, I thought
it was about time I threw down my own picnic rug for
them to come and play on," said Robbins, a foundation
member of Ten's The Panel.

Robbins, a much-loved mirth-maker whose pedigree
stretches back to The Comedy Company - the home of his
Uncle Arthur - describes Out of the Question as a quiz
show that's "a little loose around the edges".

Developed and co-produced by Robbins and Jigsaw
Entertainment, the show involves him taking his guests
down a line of topical questions that will be
"revealing, humorous and informative".

"Hopefully, I'll get more than just the answers out of
them," he said.

Robbins revealed that, sadly, Seven had rejected his
offer of using Uncle Arthur in the new line-up. Nor
should you expect to see Russell Coight, of All Aussie
Adventures fame.

TO be Kath and Kim or not to be?

That's the 18-month answer to a question Gina Riley
and Jane Turner have yet to give Channel 7 after
producing the most successful local comedy series in
Australian history.

The suburbanite super-heroines made an astonishing
transition from the ABC to commercial TV this year and
smashed all ratings predictions.

But they are not certain if the ladies of Fountain
Lake will ever return to TV, take a rest - or even go
on a live national stage tour.

They were key to Channel 7 locking in its first yearly
ratings win since the 1970s and the network is
desperate to keep the momentum going.

The fourth, eight-part Kath & Kim series was the
top-rating regular show of any kind in 2007 with an
average 2.12 million viewers per week.

Following repeats of the 2002 first ABC series then
scored a record 1.44 million viewers per week for
Seven, further super-glueing them into the Australian
mindset.

Instead of further cashing in on their success, the
pair - who created, wrote produced and performed all
the series - told Seven they're on holiday until at
least March.

That means it would be impossible to deliver a new
series next year.

Is the Kath and Kim show right to call it a day? Vote
in our poll.

Rick McKenna, series executive producer and husband of
Turner, said both parties were more than happy with
their relationship. But it just may not involve the
two famous characters.

"Gina and Jane never lock into a series until they
have a good idea of what they want to do and even then
they will still pause and reflect," he said yesterday.

"A project is never subject to a deal for them - it is
about Gina and Jane feeling it is good enough and that
they have a strong idea for a project and that may be
something other than Kath and Kim.

"Kath and Kim have not been ruled out from another
project, but whether that is a live stage show or a
new series has not been decided.

"They may well be rested."

The situation means it is almost impossible for Turner
and Riley to deliver a K&K series in 2008 as it is an
18-month creative process and they have only completed
the DVD sale process for the last series.

Both were exhausted after completing filming for this
year's series - but can afford a break after selling
rights to the series to the US.

McKenna said other Turner/Riley projects were possible
after June.

"They may not disappear off screen as Seven still has
rights to repeat episodes from the ABC series. That is
in their hands," McKenna said.

The series started last week on LivingTV and LivingTV+1.

I didn't think it'd be on this channel because it has been on BBC 2
(series 1-3).

I saw it when I was flipping through channels last night! It was the
2nd episode of series 4 called 'Fame'.

I'm gutted I missed the first episode. I'm sorry I didn't report this
sooner so we all knew it was on in advance.

I guess BBC 2 will show this series ext year but I'll keep an eye out
for it and try and let everyone know in advance.

It caught me off-guard because this series only finished in Australia
  recently and I didn't expect it to air this year.

DON'T look at them, look at moieeee. Kath and Kim had
a ratings win on Sunday night with a Channel Seven
package of Kath and Kim highlights pulling a
nationwide average audience of almost 1.5million.

But the foxy morons were no match for the Prime
Minister and the man who wants his job, with a
combined 2.4 million viewers watching their debate on
the ABC or Channel Nine.

60 Minutes's worm-monitored broadcast on Nine had an
average audience of 1.4 million. Combined with 900,000
ABC viewers, it meant 43 per cent of free-to-air
viewers were watching the debate, which was also
broadcast on Sky News.

But when it came to prime-time audience share, Channel
Seven was first with 27.2 per cent to Nine's 26.9 per
cent.

Seven's win was helped by its new game show National
Bingo Night, the most-watched program of the night
with an average audience of 1.56 million, followed by
Kath and Kim.

Up against the debate and Kath and Kim, Australian
Idol averaged 1.35 million, an increase of more than
700,000 on the previous Sunday night episode.

Even though retired from cricket and without a mobile
phone, Shane Warne's guest spot on last night's series
final of Kath and Kim was a huge hit - one of the
year's top rating shows.

Over his career the world class bowler became noted as
much for the thumb he used to send text messages as
the skill of his spin fingers.

But he was happy to send himself up as a Shane Warne
impersonator in the company of Australia's favourite
TV comedy pairing played by Jane Turner and Gina Riley
on the Seven Network.

Regardless of his high-profile indiscretions, 2.3
million viewers tuned in at 7.30pm for their final
dose of Kath and Kim series four.

It was by far the most watched program last night with
the viewer flow on giving Seven's My Name Is Earl an
average of 1.57 million viewers.

Despite John Howard finally naming a date for the next
federal election yesterday, commercial news broadcasts
performed below average.

Usually Sunday's news bulletins are among the week's
biggest raters, both Seven and Nine's bulletins only
managed to attract about 1.3 million viewers.

Kath and Kim and My Name Is Earl tipped the balance in
Seven's favour for a two percentage point primetime
win ahead of Nine, which got good value from its
Sunday movie that averaged 1.2 million viewers.

Seven's numbers could have been more impressive were
it not for Perth's marathon Telethon pushing Kath and
Kim back to 9pm.

Nine's new game show The Singing Bee didn't attract
many back to its hive on its second outing, with the
show's audience dropping to just over one million
viewers, not an attractive figure at 6.30pm.

From next week, Seven will be running its own family
fun game show in the same timeslot with National Bingo
Night hosted by Tim Campbell.

THE creators of Kath and Kim have not yet thought
about the next series after higher-than-expected
ratings for the show's arrival on Channel 7.

Instead Jane Turner, Gina Riley and executive producer
Rick McKenna will turn their attention to America,
where television giant NBC will produce a pilot later
in the year with the three as co-producers.

This year Kath and Kim has averaged 2,087,000
nationally and 705,000 in Melbourne.

Weekly consistent average figures such as those have
not been seen on a Sunday night since The Block in
2003.

"We couldn't be happier," McKenna said.

"When I read the scripts I always felt they were the
funniest, the most confident that Gina and Jane had
written.

"It's fantastic to see it all come into fruition."

They are not thinking of another series yet -- Riley
and Turner write the show, act it, help produce it,
and do the website and the PR.

"It's exhausting," McKenna said.

"Sometimes the girls, during the third day of a
gruelling publicity tour, say 'Never, never again'."

They and McKenna have co-producing roles for the US
pilot, in which Molly Shannon has been cast as Kath.

They will head to the US later in the year and are in
constant touch with the NBC network.

NBC CEO Ben Silverman, the man behind the worldwide
launches of Ugly Betty and The Biggest Loser, is a
huge supporter of the format.

McKenna said: "Ben Silverman is an amazing person and
he surrounds himself with great people, so we think
it's going to go really well."

Tomorrow night Shane Warne will be the last big-name
cameo, and the girls say they had a riot working with
him.

"He came on to the set and it was like a mutual
admiration," McKenna said.

"We couldn't believe we had Shane Warne on set, and he
couldn't believe he was on the set of Kath and Kim."

U.S. television premiere on Sundance Channel in 2008.
The announcement was made by Laura Michalchyshyn,
Executive Vice President and GM, Programming and
Creative Affairs, Sundance Channel. Sundance Channel
previously aired the first three seasons of “Kath and
Kim.”

“Sundance Channel viewers are huge fans of ‘Kath and
Kim’,” commented Michalchyshyn. “So we are very
excited to present the U.S premiere of the early work
from some of Australia’s finest comedians Jane Turner,
Gina Riley and Magda Szubanski”

The deal was negotiated by Sundance Channel Senior
Vice President, Acquisitions, Program Planning and
Scheduling Christian Vesper on behalf of Sundance
Channel and Victoria Baldock of Verve Entertainment
International on behalf of “Big Girl’s Blouse”.

This sketch series from Australian comedians Turner,
Riley and Szubanski introduced audiences to the
characters Kath, Kim and Sharon of the beloved
Australian comedy “Kath and Kim”. The series features
sketches mimicking the television industry and other
aspects of Australian life. In addition to the
hilarious antics of Kath and Kim, “Big Girl’s Blouse”
features ultimate sleaze Neville Crawley, the
Entrepreneurs Wives on the Run, Lynn & Carmel – the
desperate housewives, Jilly & Prue – classy ladies who
lunch, and the vivacious Margaret Bland’s School of
Dance. “Big Girl’s Blouse” stars and is written and
produced by Turner, Riley and Szubanski.

The series is made up of 8 thirty-minute episodes and
originally aired on Australia’s 7 Network in 1994.
