I thought DT was doing 4 specials before he handed over the reins but does that
include a Christmas 2009 special that they aren't counting as his last one?

Me too. But since they aren't I've been seeking out overseas. If anyone is

Throughout the whole story, I got the impression that almost the entire cast
seemed to have difficulty in delivering their lines naturally, with characters
such as Bambera over-emphasising almost
every word. I also get the impression that this story is somewhat like 'The
Curse of Fenric' - both have too many plot elements going on at once, both have
extras as soldiers who take their time in deciding whether they're dead or not
and both feature a monster who just stands around doing nothing for two whole
episodes. That's not to say that it's all bad - the scene where the Doctor
wakes up Ancelyn and Bambera using the chip bag made me smile - but amongst all
the yelling and screaming onscreen, I found myself yelling and screaming
offscreen in utter frustration. But then, what would I know; I like The Keys of
Marinus and can't wait for it to be released on DVD.
This is what my last post should have looked like if I had done the HTML
correctly. I don't know if it will work this time but still...
I'm going to practice what I preach with this place...
It was just after Christmas 2004 that I was flicking through some old DWMs and
read the letters that were critical of Dave Owen's review of the VHS release of
"Battlefield". One of the letter writers suggested that DWM readers in 2005
should write to the current editor and state their opinion on "Battlefield".
So, on New Year's Day 2005 I watched "Battlefield" and then sent off a letter.
Only the first part of my letter ended up being printed, so here for the first
time is the full letter (the unpublished bits will hopefully appear in bold
type)...
>>Back in DWM 264, you printed some letters that were in response to Dave Owen's
less than flattering review of 'Battlefield'. One correspondent, Trevor Ruppe,
suggested that all DWM readers of 2005 who came across his letter "...write to
your current editor of DWM and
vote on 'Battlefield' - masterpiece or utter mess?" Well, I watched my VHS copy
of 'Battlefield' on New Year's Day 2005 and I can honestly say that
'Battlefield' is an utter mess. [b]Throughout the whole story, I got the
impression that almost the entire cast seemed to have difficulty in delivering
their lines naturally, with characters such as Bambera over-emphasising almost

And guess what...I still feel that way about "Battlefield". I've yet to see the
extended version so maybe I'll change my mind when I see it. Probably not but
still...
If you are like me and like seeing what the new doctor looks like, he
and Billy are in the Sunday theatre on TV One on Sunday 18th. I
thought it was quite good that the new doctor and an old companion are
together although the interview was obviously given before he was
chosen as the new doctor.
Who appears with current DW in christmas special?
BTW looking at this week's book coverI see where they got the idea for
the teletubbies lol

Hi David,
I have been using IRC for years and love it. There is already a lovely
Dr Who community on IRC chat, so if anyone wants to pop in and chat
there or in one of the splinter rooms they'd be most welcome.
Connect to: IRCHighway - Random Server
and join the room: #drwho-central or create a new one.

Well as the title suggests we're going to bring back our Friday night
chats. But first of all...we need a Chat Room. I think one or two
people have suggested IRC Chat; I'm a dunce on IRC so if someone could
send me an email explaining the ins and outs of it and how easy it is
to use that would be very useful.
The plan is to start them in second week of January (maybe) and try and
have them every Friday after (unless there's something else on).
If you have any ideas about what we can discuss at chat sessions, let
me know.

Hi Barbara
I think everybody left this group mostly due to the rogue spam mails
and/or busy lifestyles that kiwis all live. Or to quote someone that
once replied to a mail of yours or mine a while back "...if you wanted a
major discussion board you should join one of the overseas ones..." (ok
I ad-libbed a bit)
But sad to say in this day in age Barbara that in regard to the new
series the 'downloaded it, already watched it' is probably the truth for
most (me included). Although in Prime's defence I must say they got it
quite quickly, as the series only just finished on July 8 in the UK.
So as not to spoil it for you I will be vague in my comments, just to
say that overall I still love it. I feel the writers have done well with
ALL the New Doctor Who, which has gone from strength to strength with
each series. They have managed to keep the series "Doctor Who", while
bringing it into the 21st century... Except for having Catherine Tate as
a companion...Oh how I wish Kylie had been the new companion, and
Catherine had been sent dissipated all over the universe.
I have to disagree about The Doctor appearing to be funnier, in a nod to
Donna (Catherine) as: 1 I never found Catherine Tate funny, and 2 I feel
that this is just the characterization that David brings to the Doctor
(also in many episodes he shows a very unfunny and serious side to the
doctor), the jester style like say Patrick Troughton or Tom Baker.
As I've said before, the stories are just like a series of the old Who,
some funny, some scary, mostly intelligent, some flops but all
very"Whoesque". If I have one gripe about the fourth series, it is the
way that things keep coming back, like characters, monsters, you know
sometimes you think, was it just easier to bring some old foe's back
instead of making up new ones.
Torchwood, well that's a whole different mailing group isn't it? ;-)
Torchwood is great too. It's like a soft core porn Doctor Who/ X Files
and 70's British cop show all in one (although most of the soft core
porn is gay), and they've had some great writers on it with some great
stories, some more horror and some more sci-fi but all pretty racy too.
Good characters and some nice twists. Without the back story of Doctor
Who I reckon this programme would of stood up strong (and does) on it's
own. I thought they did have a story for where each person came from in
the second series, and also they had a bit about earlier Torchwood
groups in it too, or am I a bit ahead of myself again.
But maybe I am biased, as I also like the Sarah Jane Adventures, they
are aimed at the tweeny crowd (I think) but still good stories to watch,
and I am guessing we didn't get them over here yet, which will be a
shame as Doctor Who moves towards it's finally for this series and many
people will be scratching their heads at some bits.

Wow everyone is on holiday. Haven't had access to a computer for
a
month so I expected to see some posts about the new series but
nothing.
So what do you think of it? Good , bad or have you all
downloaded it
last year and haven't bothered watching it on tv?
A friend thought DW had been bummed down to Donna's level rather
than
dazzling her with techno babble. He also seems to be funnier
maybe as
a nod to Catherine Tate.
What about Torchwood? For those like me who waited for the tv
appearance did it live up to your expectations? Or did you want
some
explainations about the formation of that group?

There once was a Coal Hill school teacher,
whose hair was her prominent feature.
Her bouffant coiffure,
would rarely demur,
when faced by a malevolent creature.
Huge appologies all round!
Even with the warning I thought I had a way to "white out" spoiler so no one
would inadvertantly read it but the Kiwi fans forwarding system removed it.
If you haven't seen Voyage of the Damned please wipe the post unread.
Again, profuse appologies.
Sorry

The man who invented the Dalek
Also wrote the story of Yartek.
He had no eye-stalk,
But instead a camp walk,
And a silly-looking rubbery neck.
If you're a regular reader of Doctor Who Magazine you might recall
former columnist "The Watcher" had a limerick competition where he
enticed readers to submit Doctor Who themed limericks. To try and
entice members to use the message board a bit more, I thought it might
be fun if we did something similar. Pretty much all you need to do is
submit one limerick (or more) as a post to the message board. There
are two minor restrictions: 1) it must be about an aspect of Doctor
Who; 2) it can be about any aspect of Doctor Who that you like.
The above is my first entry but I plan to come up with some more later
on. Your entries must be posted by 31 January, 2008 (cut-off time will
be midnight). Good luck!

You are correct. The fan lines say that she is written to return for a
story in the fourth series. As also is Rose Tyler!!!
I was under the impression that Freema was going to be in
both "Torchwood" and Series Four of "DW". Is this no longer the case?

Unfortunately haven't seen the TV guide, but was devastated to see
Catherine is the New Companion, not a big fan of her comedy show.
Shame about Freema not wanting to come back, though I see she will make
some appearances in the second series of Torchwood.
Must also say that after Kylie's performance, would of liked to have
seen her as the new companion (and probably also because I have always
fancied her ;-))
Have seen the teasers online for the next series of Dr Who, and yes
Barbara, looks like Catherine is not there for her brains (also not her
looks)

__,_._,I was going to ask if the tv guide had once again put in
an old
interview (like the one with the actress who played the spider
queen -
can't remember names today) when it had the interview with
Catherine
Tate saying she was the doctor's companion but another group I
belong
to has a picture of the two of them outside the tardis. does
that
mean there will be more techobubble because she is so stupid and
concerning why Liz Shaw was changed she should fit in perfectly.

The only children's songs that I can thing of off-hand that Jon
rercorded are "Worzel's song" and "I know an old lady", the latter
being available on one of Don Linden's CDs.
A quick look around finds that JP did a voice over type song "Who is the
Doctor" which was on some BBC album.
http://www.amazon.ca/Who-Dr-Amazing-Musical-Adventures/dp/B00004YVJ6
and a worzel gummidge album "Worzel Gummidge Sings" talks mostly about
the title track "Worzel's Song" which JP took to 33 on the British
charts but for the life of me I can't find a track listing for the
album...so may have the song you are on about on it.
Also there is mention of a song called 'The Noodle Doodle Man' which JP
did for Heinz Noodle doodles as a promotion disc.

I was wondering if anyone knows if JP make a childrens record? I
don't know the date and I have now forgotten the name of the
song I
heard yesterday morning but I think he did "The Runaway Train".

I noticed that there were two new messages, 1 was mine, so I thought
someone else in the group had commented on last night show BUT NO it
was spam. I only saw bits of last night's episode as I taped it to
watch later so today I have no comments to make but maybe later in the
week
Barbara
Well after last week's moan about being able to eliminate the Daleks
once and for all do you think DW does? Haven't there been pigs before
somewhere in Chris Eccelston's lot maybe?
It probably wasn't on this group but I remember reading that people
would like to see a story based in The States so what do you think?
Interesting time period and it could be feasible large amount of
homeless men disappear and they blame it on aliens. Would people have
been concerned or not worried because they were tramps.
Anyway the story - I quite like that machine that let DW work out
where the creature came from. His brain must be remarkable to be able
to hold that kind of knowledge and remember it. I guess special
effects have evolved since 1963 but couldn't he have had some faint
memory of seeing that octopus thing before and if the Emperor is
creating mutants/hybrids where does Davros fit into Dalek history now?
I like the part where Martha pulled over that dancer trying to get
across the stage to see Laslo
Roll on next week
Barbara
Sorry I forgot the real name of the episode.
Was there a blooper or just me when the face of Boe was dying? One
moment he was lying down and then he was leaning upright. Nobody
appeared to move him.
And the great secret - was that setting up the possibility of an
offspring or a survivor, The Master perhaps?
Can't the Doctor travel back in time or into the future to when there
are still Timelords when he gets really lonely or do you think that
the knowledge he has of their demise make it harder
I liked the wee kittens although it would have been interesting to see
a baby like their father, humanoid with a cat face. I'm glad he was
made up because as soon as he opened his mouth he was recognisable.
Geez this group seems to be in hibernation mode
Barbara
Interesting. I like the way every now and then you get a hint of
other stories like DW meeting Queen Elizabeth and wondering in which
incarnation it was. Interesting that there seems to be more comedy
creeping in whereas the comedian played it straight.
Have there been any alien visitors stories where they don't want to
colonise Earth? Duh last weeks but half of the aliens did
Slightly OT has the actor who played Shakespeare been in anything
else? My recption was too fuzzy to see his name properly. I did
think Ewan MacGregor would have fitted the part but he might be too
famous now although he was in Emma
