Message From the Founder

Greetings from the Deep South of New Zealand. My name is David
French and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Kiwi
Fans Group. As the opening blurb at the top of the page states,
this is a home for all Kiwi Fans of the BBC TV series 'Doctor Who',
regardless of whether or not they were born or are still living in
New Zealand.

The reason I started this Group is owing to the fact that I noticed
that very few New Zealand fans were appearing on the numerous Doctor
Who Message Boards on the Internet. Unfortunately, this still seems
to be the case which is very disappointing as I firmly believe that
the voices of New Zealand Fans should be heard around the Internet,
and with this site they now can.

I suppose I'd better give out some personal details about myself.
I'm 27, have completed a BA (Bachelor of Arts) Degree in English at
the University of Otago and have partially completed the MIS
programme (Master of Library and Information Services) at Victoria
University. Currently I work as a Junior Law Clerk at my family's
Law Firm in Invercargill. My earliest memory of 'Doctor Who' is
watching the 1985 re-run of 'Spearhead From Space' Episode 4
and 'Doctor Who and the Silurians' Episode 1. I continued to watch
the series on an irregular basis, but it wasn't until I began
reading the Target Novels in the 1990's that my interest in 'Doctor
Who' increased. I own approx. 50 Target Novels, approx. 30 Videos,
approx. 20 DVDs, over 150 back issues of DWM (earliest I have is DWM
187), numerous factual books and I'm also a recent subscriber to TSV
(My first being TSV 61). In addition to all that, I also have my own
personal Doctor Who Web Site entitled 'The High Council' (there's a
link to it in the 'Links' section of this site).

There are two important features of this site which I feel I should
point out. The first is the Group Picture. The Group Picture is
changed during the weekend (usually Friday), and will either be a
picture, Target Book cover or the cover of an old issue of Doctor
Who Magazine. When re-runs or new episodes of 'Doctor Who' return
to TV, then the Group Picture will coincide with whatever story is
being screened. The second feature is the Chat Room. Previously we
have had our own Chat Room as part of the Group features.
Unfortunately, Yahoo! have now disabled all their Java-based Chat
Rooms including our one. Fortunately we now have a new Chat Room
with Sigma Chat and there is a link to the new Chat Room at the top
of the page. The Chat Room is open to all members and indeed we
have a weekly chat session every Friday night from around 8pm (NZT)
onwards. The Chat nights have proven to be successful and popular
amongst the members who use it. Topics of discussion have ranged
from the latest merchandise (videos/DVDs/books/CDs) to previously
attempting the Final Test from the latest issue of Doctor Who
Magazine. Occasionally, there are special Party Chat Sessions, but
members are given notice via email when such an event is on.

That's pretty much it from me. I hope you enjoy being a member and
use the Message Board on a regular basis. If you're uncertain as to
what to say, I consider the best approach being an introductory
message similar to this one.
